emoticon Hi Everyone, So glad I found this team. I found it by accident reading a fellow sparks post on another team and felt curious about the No S Diet. When I read the link I thought, "This looks like something I can live with - simple and easy to understand. No big food expenses involved. And since I can have 'treats' on the normal S days I won't be setting myself up for food cravings." So, I am joining the team and look forward to getting to know you all better. Along with the food component, I am also committing to the exercise to complement the eating. I have a lot of weight to lose, so for me it will be one day at a time. I will be rooting for the rest of you.

I just started the No S Diet yesterday. I loved the write-up and it all made sense...obviously extremely simple. Love the originators attitude. Right now, I am just trying to maintain my weight and health. My goal with the No S Diet is to avoid obsessing about dieting and food.....to reduce all the mental chatter and decision-making. The biggest challenge was no snack in the evening. I made it !!
I did chew sugarless gum though.

Yesterday =day 1 and I made it through the day according to the plan ! Felt great, had lots of energy, enjoyed my full plate of food when eating, got lots done, didn't obsess about food/weight loss.

Hi, thanks for the welcome on my Sparkpage Oolala53!

No S seems like a sustainable way to maintain a healthy weight, I have a friend who follows it. I'm about 10lbs from target, and thinking that if I can establish good habits for the last few pounds it will make maintenance easier.

There are lots of temptations during the day at my workplace - both in the canteen and around the office :(

Hello, I heard of this team from other teams I am on and got the book. For the past couple of weeks I have been trying out "no snacks" and that went well so tomorrow I plan to go all in on the No S Diet!

Welcome! How did you lose the 50 lbs.? It is so typical to lose and then gain, especially with plans that emphasize similar eating amounts every day. Try not to be disgusted with yourself. You have a LOT of company! No S is great therapy after that.

I know of Fung's work. I read a chapter of his book, The Obesity Code. I'm partly impressed and partly annoyed by it. It may be ONE way to deal with obesity and a very effective way to deal with diabetes, but I've seen people cure their diabetes with completely opposite plans! Low fat and total vegan! And NO long-living cultures in the world now live low carb. But I will say that I think disease is an appropriate reason to "go on a diet" such as his. I'm pretty sure I won't develop diabetes, but I think I'd try his protocol, if I did.

No S I see really as more of a lifestyle. For those with disease, the diet needs to become the lifestyle, but No S matches real lifestyles out there.

IF does have some real benefits. There are claims that users don't overdo it on up days, but I wonder how big the samples are. I know one of the researchers said she couldn't get the mice to gain or even maintain weight when they were fasted every day, but she didn't say she used mice that might have had a propensity for obesity, as some humans have. Or ones that already had a habit of eating the equivalent of a half a gallon of ice cream at a sitting.

As Reinhard says, fast between meals first! That may be enough. Give it several months at least! Stick around for the tough times, if you have any. Then see what needs to be adjusted.

Hi.
I also just joined. I am really struggling with using food to entertain myself. I've regained half of the 50 lbs I lost and am feeling super-bummed about it. I hope to come back to Spark for friendship and motivation.

Is anyone on What's App? It is an instant messaging service, like texting with photo and other attachments possible, that operates through wi-fi instead of sms. It might help to message support to another sparker when I am dying for a snack!

I just bought Dr. Jason Fung's new book, The Obesity Code. (Canadian doctor, who treats diabetes and obesity. He's from Toronto, near where I live) He advocates fasting of some sort 5:2 or 16:8, or even just avoiding snacking between meals. I think I am going to start with this.

Please share there, if you would, how you got inspired to adopt such rules. (I know OA USED to recommend just that. Then they got very prescriptive about flour and sugar. But I'm pretty sure their compliance rate is very poor.)

Hi everyone,
I've only recently come across the No S diet, but I have to say so much of it rings true for me. I've had the sense for a long time now that when I eat, I never really eat "meals". Or if I do, I never truly enjoy them because I've been snacking too much prior to them.
My digestion has never been a problem, but now at 39, I have been noticing that I've often got some kind of stomach upset going on.
I'm definitely curious about this way of eating. It seems logical, and as a serial snacker, I think it might solve a lot of problems for me.
I do have a question though. Are snacks ever allowed? I exercise 5-6 days a week and fairly intensely (I really like it :) I find that if I don't eat a little something before a workout I can get shaky and light-headed. I mean, this could be because I don't eat a big enough breakfast. But would eating a small snack defeat the whole purpose of No S?
At any rate, I'm going to give it a try this coming week and see how it goes.
I have NEVER not snacked, so this should be interesting!

emoticon I just read this book and checked out the website and I had been working on healthy eating but do have trouble with sweets. Recently I had given up dairy and have been eating a mostly paleo/gluten free diet and I think this lifestyle is just what I need to complete my new way of eating. Limiting sweets , even paleo sweets I believe will help me with my weight loss and not snacking or adding my healthy snacks to my meals instead of by themselves I believe will help me to not eat as much at meals.

Pleased to meet you, Diane. It's very likely No S is going to help stop the habits that have led to slow increase in weight in their tracks. Almost no one's weight goes up without their eating having gone up, too. The weight may not come off fast, but the meal pattern sets up the perfect foundation for eventually decreasing the total amount of food we eat. I don't want to ruin the surprise of some of the delights of No S. You have to live it to find out!

Sanity is a word I use in regard to eating all the time. There is nothing sane about eating all the time, especially cruddy quality food, though just plain less of that is also a boon. Slim cultures and long-lived cultures don't do it. They don't think of themselves as being deprived. They think eating all the time deprives you of the real pleasure of hunger and satiety!

Don't get discouraged! You don't HAVE to fail, but people can fail over and over but still be laying the groundwork for eventual success. It's a very reasonable way to apportion ourselves food in this food-rich environment, so it's worth some frustration. And MILLIONS more people have lived this lifestyle than all the diet study participants combined.

My name is Sue, I'm 55, binge eater of decades and decades. I have stretches of "doing well" and then fall down the rabbit hole rather quickly, like I did just yesterday.

Aloha - I'm DJ ... I've been seeing posts on the website referencing the No S Diet ...decided to check it out. It definitely appeals to me and may be just what I need to 'tweak' what I'm currently doing. I've requested a library copy of the book which I'll probably receive by Thursday.

I'm eating fairly healthy now but fall back from time to time and tend to regain the same 10-15 lbs. over and over the past 6-8 months. However, even when on plan and eating healthy I find myself snacking or eating late at night (and it's not because I'm hungry!) which I would like to stop

Excited to be starting this ... can't wait to receive the book ... and I like this team's goals. The 8 hours sleep will probably be the hardest thing for me to do. I've had sleep problems for years ... I don't remember when I last got 8 hours! I've been working on this as well ... the last few weeks I've sporadically managed to get 6 hours.

Anyway, we'll see how all this goes ... I like incorporating 'simple' into my life ... we have simplified and downsized our way of living ... makes sense to do same to my way of dieting!

I left a message on your page.

There are so many benefits to having longer gaps between eating events! For one thing, it's so much easier not to have to worry about having the perfect snack available.

Sweets were my major issue, too. It took awhile, but I just kept up my weekdays (called N days) and eventually, I did what I needed to to tame S days. I doubt any other plan could have made me act any faster.

No S's real value can't be felt completely in the first few weeks or even months, like traditional diets can. Hang in there!

emoticon Hi, I am new to this lifestyle and spark. I had read the book a while back but never really got serious about trying it because I was afraid of failure. Now I think I am ready because I have tried every diet out there and nothing has worked. I have real trouble sticking to anything because the thought that a situation or holiday will come along and ruin all my progress scares me. That is why I believe this "lifestyle" is the way to go. Never have to worry about food restrictions or calories , Points, Carbs etc. again. Love it . I know that sweets will be the hardest for me but Knowing that I can have them on the weekends helps.

Hate to tell you that struggling with S days can go on a lot longer than you want. The saving grace is that there isn't much else that will work better without a real change of heart or lucking out on food habits that atypically do the trick. You could spend a lot of time looking for the Holy Grail, and still end up back here. I've seen it happen SO many times on nosdiet.com.

I lasted because I knew that going wild one or two days a week was still better than the way I was living before. Five days of sanity a week was a huge improvement, even with failures at them, too. I'll comment more on S-day worries, if someone wants to start a thread on it.

Another thing that kept me going was just knowing that this plan mimics what other slim/long-lived cultures do. I wasn't following the outcome of just a few people. Sure some studies follow quite a few people, but they can't compete with what so many people have done for hundreds of years. Imagine yourself aligning with them! If you had been born there, you'd have the body you'd get there. It's unlikely our bodies are at their natural weights on SAD, so something has to give! No S is a great start, in any case.

How exciting to see you here! I find this plan SO sensible and easy. I've probably been a member for a year and I enjoy my meals so much more because I am actually HUNGRY when I eat. I must admit that I m still struggling with S Days, but I believe that is par for the coarse. Be sure to listen to the podcasts on the No-S Diet website ---- I found them very helpful an need to start listening to them again. Great "seeing" you here!

Hi, My I'm Cheri and I have been on and off No S for a while. My biggest issue is sweets. Snacks would probably be my second biggest. Luckily I usually don't have any problem with seconds. I like this "diet" because it is more sustainable than any other "diet" but I do have issues with emotional eating which has made it hard to not snack and as far as sweets go we try not to keep them in the house except for usually holidays and when we go out to eat sometimes I might have something sweet. I believe my problem is I can never sit down and enjoy a meal because I have two little ones. Ages 2 and 5. Luckily most days I only have the two year old because my 5 year old just started full days of pre-k. So its not so overwhelming. I did learn though that bananas help with my sweet cravings some. I was really proud the other day when I was confronted with a table full of cookies and chose a banana instead. Baby steps I guess. Anyways I look forward to the encouragement I will get being a part of this team.

Librarian, welcome to the team and best wishes for your Lenten discipline. My choice was to abstain from meat the entire time (not just Fridays); I prefer the vegetarian plus fish lifestyle anyway. This is my second week; focus for the week is keeping my meals within the 7 3/8 inch boundaries of my favorite plates and getting my exercise in, whether on the floor or seated. Will be an Urban Ranger on wheels once the weather warms up.

I decided to not eat between meals during Lent, and discovered the No S Diet when checking to see if hard candy counted as a snack (lol!). It does, of course. In any event, the No S Diet certainly seems sustainable, and I have five days in (I didn't snack or eat sweets either "S" day this week - I will wait for Easter to do that.

I gave up all added sugar last year, and did not lose an ounce. I am curious to see how I do on this "live it" plan.

Feeling rather overwhelmed by all of the info on the message boards; ordered a very reasonably priced copy of the book last night (neither of the library systems that I use had it). Having a Super Bowl party for two tomorrow night after we get back from the funeral home visitation for an ex-co-worker of mine who died in his sleep at 43. Will eat dinner b/f we go rather than come home ravenous then have a low-sugar Sweet on the S-day. My 390 lb husband is the perfect poster child for what constant snacking will do to a person.

Came across No S somewhere yesterday; believe that it could be the ideal solution to so many of my food and eating related problems. Have just started looking at the boards; a lot of detail to examine behind the simple front premise. Will have to do that 14 min of exercise mostly seated or on the floor; the point is to get it done however.
Have been obsessed w/ sweets ever since childhood; amazed at how much of my food pantry and recipe collection is devoted to them (mostly using no-cal/artificial sweeteners d/t hypoglycemia since my early 20s that flipped over into T2 diabetes w/ weight gain and aging). So, those need to be the first to go; I have some SF Jello already made up in the fridge that I may have after dinner on Sunday. Seconds are not a problem except at buffets; easy fix there. Intelligent food choices should eliminate the need for snacks for blood sugar stability but that will take some experimentation.
Glad to see that this is an active group; will be back often.

Everything you need to read is all on the front page of the NoS website - if you get more curious, the podcasts are great (in my opinion) - then the forums are a great place to post how you're doing and get support and feedback.

Pile your plates as high as you want to at the beginning - the fear of not having enough will go in it's own time (faster than you think actually!). I went from being a three meals and three snacks a day person, to a three meals a day person who can now go 5-6hrs between meals quite comfortably. I started around July last year and haven't looked back - I love it! I hope you do too.

I started today, yes on Sunday. But I wanted to practice for tomorrow at my very hectic work. I noticed the following. My breakfast and lunch were both very large, or I'm just not so hungry today. There is an element of fear that the meals are too small. I guess I will learn over time what is normal. Does anyone recognize this?

Hi, I'm new!

I'm starting the No S plan on Monday. I'm thinking snacking will be my hardest challenge, but I'm confident I can do this! I've really been wanting just a simple plan that doesn't involve complicated food lists or counting calories - both of those seem to make me either obsess about everything or throw in the towel!

We are always so happy to get a new team member! It was strange to not snack at first, but I realized because I was so used to snacking that I really didn't know what being hungry felt like any more! Now I am truly hungry before a meal and enjoy my food SO MUCH MORE!!! I hope you adjust and enjoy the ease and freedom this method provides.

During my first couple of weeks, I allowed myself one snack a day (down from my usual three) - and after the first week, I found I didn't need my one snack. You might like to try having one snack instead of two for the first month - and see how that works for you. You might be surprised!
