Hi everyone. I'm Helen. I am here to try to get better quality of sleep. I do get at least 8 hours of sleep each night but I toss and turn a lot and have at least 2-3 bathroom breaks...probably due to bp and fluid medications. I take them early in the morning but they seem to work all night also. Also on a bladder retraining program advised by my doctor. Looking forward to enjoying this challenge with uninterrupted and restful slumber.

Hello everyone! I'm Veronica. I joined this team for a better quality of sleep and with a goal of ultimately feeling more alert and energized throughout the day! I know my body well enough to know that I seriously need my sleep. I need AT LEAST 8 hours, 9 is better. Even one hour less has a big effect on my energy levels and mood. So I'm here to get myself on a better/more regular sleeping pattern that allows me to get the length and quality of sleep that I need!

I don't necessarily have sleep problems. I just have problems making myself go to bed on time and staying alert at work the next day. I need to make myself get into a routine.

Hello, My name is Carollee
I have trouble falling asleep and staying that way.
I get up at 5am for work, but I have a sedentary job.
Even when I work out I am not able to sleep, exercise keeps me cranked up at night

Hi

The 19th will be my 6 mo SparkVersary. I've made great progress and now it is time to tackle another health issue.
I am joining this challenge with my husband (not a SP member). He has chronic insomnia and sleep apnea. I have fibromyalgia and am peri-menopausal. So neither one of us sleep well and we accidentally wake each other several times a night. Plus we both take bp meds which cause us to need to get up in the night to use the bathroom.

Hi! I joined this group because I remember how good I felt when I went to bed at a decent hour and I want to feel like that again. I stay up too late....seems like that is the only "me" time I get but then I am exhausted and cranky all day. Spark people has made such a difference in my eating habits, I thought I would move on to another "problem" area I have. =)

Hi Everyone! My name is Lisa and I joined this challenge because I miss sleep. When I was younger I could sleep for 10 hours, nothing would wake me. Now that I'm in my 40's a full night sleep eludes me. I'll wake up after 4 or 5 hours and can't fall asleep again. I'm tired and irritated at work so I drink coffee to stay awake but then I'm wired and still irritated. I want to stop being irritated because I'm no longer a fun person to be around. My goal for this challenge is at least 7 hours sleep a night.

Hi, my name is Heather. I'm 20 years old. I work part time, am a full time student, and have friends who love to hang out with me. While this is awesome, and I love my life and friends, it makes my sleeping pattern rather erratic. I never know how much sleep I'm going to get on a given night or what time I'll even get home and in bed.

I'm taking this challenge to help myself break this cycle and learn how to get the right amount of sleep despite my schedule. :)

Hi! I'm Carole. I have had insomnia for years. My main problem is getting to sleep - I think I am tired but when I get in bed my mind starts buzzing. Then I get restless so I get up and go and read. A good night for me is 5hrs. It would be wonderful if I could have a full 8hrs and feel energetic when I wake up!

I am so excited to find this challenge. I have not had a good nights sleep for awhile. I seem to get 5 hours and then I wake up and my mind is active and can't go back to sleep. As a result I am tired by late morning with not enough energy me through the day.

Update.. after week one.. last night I actually got 6 hours sleep without interupation thats the god news..the bad news is.. I went to the dr this last week and my blood pressure was high.. and so..another challenge

I'm joining this challenge because I always stay up too late and wake up too late. Usually during the school year I have a pretty normal sleep pattern. However, Im starting my freshmen year in January so i had an extra long summer break and so yeah, I stayed up way longer than I should have. I want to get my normal sleep pattern back now instead of rushing back into when its time for school

Hello Everyone, My name is Pam and the reason that I am here in the Challenge is that I can not stay asleep during the night. I have tried sty up later so I can sleep all night and not wake up several time in the night. The earlier I go to bed the more I wake up and sometime I am up for an hour or two before falling back to sleep. My goal is to have one good night sleep that I do not wake up at all during the night. emoticon emoticon

Hello,

I signed up for this challenge months ago and never even started. I am in my final semester for my Civil Engineering degree and because it is a group project I have been having to work around other people's schedules (which includes late nights). I too have the problem of not being able to shut my mind off and sleep. I also hit snooze for about an hour before waking up and rush around in the morning to get my daughter to school before going to school or work myself.

I have made one very important step towards sleeping better that I think will really help: I quite caffeine. This is nearly impossible for even me to believe; I have been an avid coffee drinker since I was a kid.

I have 30 more days of school and am now caffeine free, perhaps I'll be able to get better sleep within this next four weeks.

Hi Sleepy heads LOL

My major issue is getting to bed. I feel like I'm gonna miss something if I go to bed too early. My self-management (I can't say time management because I can't manage time; I can only manage me.) skills aren't that great and I seem to be chasing my own tail much of the time.

I haven't worked out yet today (and it's almost 11:30 in the evening). I'm off from work tomorrow so I can stay up. But my body wakes up early as if I'm going to work. Most days I start at 6:30. Sometimes I start at 8:30. The two-hour difference really does make a difference.

When I get home from work, I usually fall asleep for at least an hour. I read somewhere today that naps shouldn't be more than 20 minutes long. When I do wake up I want to stay up. Either I do that or lay in bed until the middle of the night, then get up and stay for at least an hour.

My sleeping patterns are really bad, and I'm going to do my best to let you all help me.

Hi I'm new to this challenge and new to sparkpeople. My goal is to go to bed at 10 every night. I'm having difficulties waking up in the morning. I have two girls that have to be up by 6:30 to catch the bus by 7:20 and we rush every morning. I'm currently recovering from a tonsillectomy two weeks ago. I've been sleeping alot the last two weeks. This has been a problem for years and I just haven't found anything to help. Its like my mind is always racing at night. I'll be in bed by 10 but not falling asleep til 12 or so, even if I fall asleep by 10-10:30 I still find myself hitting my snooze button 20 times and rushing my kids in the morning.

Good evening! I'm starting to refocus on my health, and I've realized the biggest issue I tend to have is that it all becomes so overwhelming - the exercise, controlling food, preparing healthy food, full time job and three kids and don't forget I"m supposed to have some "me time" in there, and I just find myself feeling so worn out about it all. By the time I have supper finished I'm almost dizzy tired - I realized I really need better control of my sleep or I'll never have the ENERGY to do the rest.

So I feel a little guilty not getting up earlier to work out, or staying up later to prep healthy meals for tomorrow, but I've decided getting my sleep in order really needs to be the priority for me right now - the rest will come in time.

My name is Debbie. As I have read many times that not getting enough sleep can effect weight loss, I want to try to increase the number of hours of sleep I get. I usually sleep for about 5 and a half to 6 hours per night.

You know, I only joined this team as a sort of "Well, it's something to join" attitude - I just re-joined SparkPeople yesterday - but I took that quiz and made a goal, and now I'm pretty excited about it. Imagine getting enough sleep -- heaven!

What your doc said sounds backwards. Most anti-depressants don't act like stimulants, so they shouldn't keep you up at night. I've been dealing with a low grade depression for decades. While antidepressants are not magic pills that make me feel wonderful all the time, they at least keep me functional for day-to-day living.

You might look up sleep hygiene and take some of the steps that are recommended. You'll probably find lots of suggestions like "follow a consistent nighttime routine," "don't exercise in the evenings," and "turn off all electronics an hour before bedtime." It certainly won't hurt and you don't have to have a doctor's permission to do the activities.

Also, your doctor is not your God. In fact, you are paying him/her. If your doctor thinks the anti-depressant is zapping your energy, he/she should be trying something else. If your doc doesn't listen to your concerns, you might think about switching to a different doc, or one who specializes in depression.

Good luck,
Bobbie

Hi my name is Jenn, I'm 24 years old, I think I have insomnia but my doctor doesn't think so. I'm on an anti-deppresent and she blames that. So I'm tryings to get more energy on my own.

Hi my name is Marie. I would like to sleep through the night. I tend to wake up several times and then it takes 5-10 minutes to get back to sleep. I would love to have one full night of uninterrupted sleep. I think using the sleep diary may help me figure out why I wake up so often--I hope!

Hi, I'm Bobbie and this is my first challenge. I'm trying to get this posted before 10:00 pm my time so I can get to bed at a decent hour tonight. I tend to lose time browsing the computer and haven't gotten a decent night's sleep in forever. My boys get me up fairly consistently whether I've had 2 or 8 hours of sleep.

I have a CPAP machine, but I'm even sabotaging myself by telling myself, "what's the use?"

Anyhow, I know my sleep is critical to my program and so, I'm joining this challenge.

Hi, my name is Carolyn. I just finished the stress busters challenge and that helped with the sleep also, but I don't ever get more than 4 to 6 hours and not all together. Hoping that by using the techniques learned on this challenge I can improve my overall health by getting quality sleep.

Hi, my name is Artems & I live in Greece. I'm fairly new to sparkpeople, but new to this team. I have a problem getting to sleep, (who doesn't?) but believe if I just get in the swing of doing it a few times, can create the habit and then hopefully it'll become automatic. Hopefully my new exercise program will also help-make me more tired and ready for bed, but look forward to any tips besides warm milk :)

Hello Team,
My name is Shannah. I have struggled with insomnia for as long as I can remember. I have tried several over the counter and prescription medications over the years. I currently take Ambien and have been taking it for probably the last 2 years or so. I have found that if I don't take it, I just simply don't sleep. I mean at all. Unfortunately I have dealt with many of the side effects of Ambien including calling and texting people in the middle of the night as well as eating and not remembering any of it the next day. I am concerned that I may do something dangerous-liking driving. And despite how long I sleep, I never feel like I have had enough rest. My ultimate goal is to try to get off the Ambien completely. I believe this challenge will help me achieve this goal

I have had more sleep issues since I have moved and usually can stay up until 1 or 2 am before I get tired. I get up usually around 6 am to start getting my kids ready for school and do it all over again. I'm going to start trying to lie down by 9pm so I can be asleep by 9:30pm; or so that's the plan anyhow. Good luck to all of you!

Hey everyone! My name is Summer and I live in San Diego. I joined this challenge because I am more tired lately. Even though I'm sleeping the same amount, and have always been a good sleeper, I feel more fatigued. Could be the workouts, could be stress (I'm a teacher) but one of my goals is to make sure my body is getting the rest it needs! I've been sick twice this school year already and I think it's fatigue and stress related. Anyway, not sure what gives, but that's why I'm doing this! To find out!

Hi everyone,
I've joined this team because Every since I was diagnosed with depression at the age of 17 I have a hard time sleeping. Either falling or asleep or falling back asleep after I've woken up in the middle of the night. Now that I'm trying to lose the weight and stressing about a lot of other things in life I find it difficult to sleep at night. Hoping to get onto a better sleep schedule and knowing others out there struggle like me, gives me hope we can all support one another,

Hey all!

I decided to join this team because as a college student, I know I don't give my body enough rest. I've started blogging the sleep journal and so far so good. On my first day I went to bed earlier and got up 2 hours before I usually do! I think it's really a mind set thing for me.

Cheers!

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea earlier in the year and last month attended a sleep clinic where I was provided with a continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP). The results were immediate, I had the best nights sleep for ages . Within a week I was full of energy ready to start losing some weight. I made a fortunate decision in joining SP and have not looked back since. I have lost 16 pounds in eight weeks !

Having read OKANE13's post I can concur with everything said in the article. I have suffered with depression on and off for 16 years and found my mood improved within a week. I have had many false dawns when it came to overcoming depression, but I feel this is the most positive step I have taken in all those years.

If anybody out there thinks they may suffer from Sleep Apnea please consider giving it a go, the machine is very quiet and you soon get used to the mask. Feel quite proud now to be a Hosehead.

Regards, Richard

Hey! My name is marie and i have very sporadic sleep patterns. My dad and big brother have sleep apnea but when i got checked about 3 years ago i didn't. in fact the guy doing the test when i asked how bad it looked said i slept fine. i even only moved 3 times in my sleep during the 6 hours or so. so now i'm left wondering if theres something else screwing with my sleep or if its just my cruddy mattress :(

Hi, I'm Shanta. I'm 39 and I don't think I get enough sleep. Mostly because I get up at 4:15am and don't return home from work until after 5pm. Then of course there is the cooking and preparing fro the next day before being able to go to bed. I try to get to bed each day by 9pm. Lately, I have been having problems sleeping thru the night...I usually end up watching the clock.

Hi, I'm Kelly. I'm 28 and I sleep TOO MUCH. It's not even my weight that makes me consider this a problem. I just miss out on so much and am consistently late for things because I've fallen asleep. I am often fatigued and I think it may just be too much sleeping and not enough moving! (I'm a full-time student with a job that's not incredibly active either).

My name is Laura, and I have learned that getting enough sleep is crucial to weight loss. I have trouble going to sleep on my own and have a hard time relaxing before bed... I want to be able to go to sleep without the aid of sedatives!

Goal #1- Get below 200 lbs (achieved 6/26/2011)

Goal #2- Reach the weight I was when I met my husband, 175 lbs (achieved 9/7/2011)

Hello everyone! My name is Kristen and I have been having issues with sleep for a few years now. I just don't seem to be able to get myself on a schedule at all. I just started college at the beginning of September and I am hoping the schedule from that will force me to get on a proper sleeping schedule!

I look forward to meeting my fellow team mates!

Hello everyone. My name is Emily, and Im a stressed out person. In trying to live a healthier life sleep is very important, and I need it! I have excessive anger issues, no job and too many house pets to love right now. Our girly cat just gave birth. I would love to learn how to sleep again, especially in peace.

Hi all, my name is Deb. I recently had several surgeries and some major stressors in my life. I want to be able to handle life and get some decent sleep. I've started by staying away from caffeinated beverages - I think this can prevent good sleep. I've also taken up meditation to calm my thoughts, and of course eating better. I am noticing that my sleep patterns are improving, but I want to wake up and feel fully rested - that's my goal.
