Hi, I have diabetes, asthma, high cholesterol, and I need to loose 70 LBS. I was in a head on collision on March 2nd, with a 19 yr. old who was texting and lost control. It broke my left hip, Right Knee cap in 2 places, and right foot had to be screwed back together. I am trying to get back to walking, Dr. approved for me to get on crutches last Tuesday with left leg since hip has almost fused back together, but when I tried to stand up on it nothing ( complete muscle atrophy) I decided right then I was going to get healthy and walk again. He approved for me to swim, so I found a physical Therapy center that has a pool and started last Thursday. My goal is to loose the weight and be in a marathon with my sister by next spring.

God Bless You on your Journey!

Hello from Maryland!

When looking for information on motivation to help with making lifestyle changes, I came upon the Spark website. I had been a member before, but didn't stick with it, which has been an ongoing problem for me. I decided over the past week after much thought over the past few months that it is time for me to take action in this area of my life. I will be completing my PhD in June and decided that if I can achieve that, I can get a grip on myself in relation to health and wellness issues in my life. So here goes ...

I have Type 2 diabetes and use insulin as well as oral medications. I just want to get healthier, maybe reduce these medications, feel better about myself, and relieve my family from worrying about me. I am excited to find out more about this weight loss challenge.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Gail

Howdy from Houston, TX.

I joined the group here to get back into my sparkly mindset. I joined back a long time ago and went from 252 to 186. I got off most of my meds and everything was great until I had a bicycle accident and jacked up my knee - which required surgery - problem worse than expected so recovery took longer - and after that it was a roll of getting back to work... and having to reprove myself to the boss... then it was just excuses. I left that job - got another one quickly (blessed) and its a whoooole lotta sitting. So the pants were getting too tight.. and I started feeling bad again. So the group here came at the right time.

This last week - I ate much better, packing lunches and snacks - worked out 4 days this week - and did NOT eat the office junk that was of course - in abundance!
I took inventory of my workout clothes (I dont remember them being so snug either) had to grab a few new shirts (cuz naturally when I lost the weight before - I purged my fat clothes) Never imaged I would be looking at them again... but thats fine.

My doctor changed me to a long running insulin shot (i cried when that happened) and she told me it was only "for a while to let my pancreas rest" - yeah. Bull! Its time to go back to the doctor... and Im sure whether I stay with HER, or go back to my other one (if he's still there) but I liked him better I think. But its about that time for the blood work. Im not looking forward to it.

But I know what I have to do. I know sparkpeople works. I've surrounded myself with motivational supportive things (including putting my hubby on notice again) LOL

Oh yeah... Im 47yo - mom of two grown kids and four cats (who were kittens in the backyard who's momma died one day... and Im a big sucker and took them in and bottle fed them all. So I guess now they are my children.. haha.

Yup - thats about it!
Lets keep motivating each other!

Hello, Tammy, welcome to the team, wow, I'd give anything for a 5.8 A1C, but then I've been Type 1 diabetic since 1975, so I'm happy with my 6.2 right now. It's come down a lot since I started this program after being out of control (because of my Dad's passing). I love your goals, and I know you'll be able to succeed, just reading what you wrote, you understand it a lot and will get there, afterall, how can you not with all of US behind you! :)

The water consumption helps a lot to keep you not feeling as hungry, at least it did me, and I was always eating snacks..but no more, it takes all I have to eat what I'm supposed to. :D

Have a great day!

hi I am is Tammy, I am new to this team and challenge I have pre diabetes I will find out this Friday what my A1C is. A little nervous because last time I went it was 5.8 that is when I found out I was pre diabetic. Hoping my A1C does not go up. It is hereditary in my family. My goals are to get this under control and to get some excess weight off of my body. And to follow a workout plan and eat more veggies and fruit. And increase my water consumption. Also to gain some motivation along the way.

You're welcome, Cristen :)

Hi, Monica, I've found that even surgery can't be used as an excuse because I found some great "seated" exercise tapes, that you can adjust to your abilities. This is the best place to lose, the nutrition area does everything for you, as I mentioned, there are a variety of exercise videos here which are really good for seated exercises. Don't look up "chair" exercises because you get some that involve using chairs to exercise, not just seated. But anyway, if you try to do something similar to biking, which uses as much exertion, soon you'll be doing as well as if you were riding the bike, then when you have time, you can start. If you're like me, a non-exerciser who hated exercising, you'll soon feel the need to exercise and actually enjoy it. Anyway, we're here for you, right beside/behind you if you need help. Drink that 8 glasses of water a day, you'll soon not be able to get through a day without it. But most of all, keep your head high, and KNOW inside, that you can do this, and you will. I have faith in you!!

Hi! My name is Monica and finally decided that I better do something about this weight gain, in earnest, and not just talk about it! My husband and I recently retired and are living in an active retirement community with lots of fun things to do - but so much of the events are centered around 'food'. And it doesn't help that I am on the Social Committee and assist in planning these events and are expected to attend, set up, etc. I have had two knee replacement surgeries and am really doing good but I think I use it as a 'crutch' to not exercise as I should. My surgeon encourages me to especially ride the bike, but I seem to always be 'too busy' and not make time for it. I have a goal to be healthy and have better movement by September because we are taking one of our bucket-list trips to Australia and I feel I need to be able to move better. I have lots of weight to lose but don't expect to lose it all by September - but would love to have 50 lbs. or close to that gone. Help!

Hi, Judy, nice to meet someone who teaches kids like my nephew, Camden, always so kindhearted and patient..something I wish I had sometimes. Hey, a pound a year, that's not bad, you have all my support and everyone else here I'm sure! I wish you the best, and if you have questions, feel free to ask!

Hello, Alexis, welcome, now that's a new one for me, normally I hear of people who love to eat..what about small meals of food, throughout the day. Have a little bit for breakfast (that's always important); a little for lunch, and the same for dinner. If you want a "snack" in between, go for it, just something like toast, or a veggie, or something, maybe a boiled egg. It's important, even in Type 2 Diabetes, to keep your A1C and blood sugars under control, it's not the here an now that could hurt you, it's later on in life. You're in great company, anything you get stuck, ask, there are always people here to help you out. I don't know if my answer was any help or not, but I hope it was.

Hello, Kelly, welcome back, as you probably know, you get the best support here. It's tough adding on those extra pounds and then realizing you need to lose them. I found that drinking the 8 glasses of water a day REALLY helps curb my appetite something that was so out of control. Now I feel "full" when I eat, and still need my snack. *L* Imagine that! Good luck to you!

Greetings, Cristen good to have you a part of the team. There are a lot of Type 2 Diabetics here, (I'm Type 1 since 1975). One of the best ways to both get your blood sugars under control and lose weight is a program like this. The nutrition area of SP pretty much tells you what you have to eat, in regards to nutrition, and you go from there. I love it. Good luck!

Unfortunately my funk came with some baggage and now I want to get back on track and working toward a more healthy lifestyle. One without all the prescriptions and sickness. :) Hope to have a great 28 days and learn some new tips and tricks from this group!

Greetings,

My name is Alexis. I've recently been told that my A1C levels are high and that I am at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. I am also dealing with a uterine fibroid right now (last time that happened, I gained something like 80 pounds in one year!).

My main challenge is that I hate eating, especially alone (and I live alone). I don't really eat that much, but my problem is that I wait until I feel I am starving before I eat. Any tips for people who hate eating are welcome.

I'm not much of a joiner, either, but I'm trying something new.

I recently turned 42. I'd like to lose 50 pounds, ultimately.

Hi Everyone! My name is Judy and I'm a retired Special Education teacher. Almost 2 years away from the classroom, I'm still putting together my new lifestyle. Unfortunately, it's all too easy to be sedentary! I just turned 60 and have a good 60 pounds to lose!

Hello, Shellie, welcome, I'm going to suggest something that may help you not "feel so lost" because it helped me. Click on the "Spark Points" (near your wheel you spin in the upper left of your start page) and it'll take you to a place where all the ways you can get spark points are listed. there is a symbol (I believe it's something like an "i", but not sure) on the left near the start of what the item is, click on that and it'll tell you how to get those points, if you don't know. Every day, if you do this, you'll discover so much on this site, it's a wonderful place. I didn't even know those things were there until I started doing that and it's helped me get around so much better on here. I love it. Remember you can come to us anytime to, even in my PM if you want to ask something or just talk. I'm here for anyone and everyone, afterall we're all in the same boat and we'll all reach our goal, and that means you too! Best of luck!

Hi, Queen808, this is one of the best places to connect with those like you. I have Type 1 Diabetes (since 1975 when I turned 18), trust me you're not the only Type 2, there are LOTS of them on this board, you're in "like company". If you want to chat, if you want help, just ask, even if you want to message me, that's fine, I'll help all I can. I wish you the best!

Hi, Nicolei48, welcome, this is a great way to find the discipline you need, I've found. It's so helpful in the Nutrition area that it counts out your calories, etc, I love it. I'd always had trouble with that before, but not anymore..everything on here is education to me. Remember, we're here for you, keep up the incentive and you'll get to your goal. Good luck!

Failencia, welcome to you too, you never mentioned, do you have Type 1? yes to exercise and eat healthier are fabulous goals, and you'll reach them, on here especially. Find a goal, search for it everytime you go to eat, exercise, and keep it in your sight, and you'll reach that goal. I wish you the best luck ever on this journey we take together!

Hello, DeannaYou have a great incentive to lose, you're newborn! To have that as a goal is fabulous, you can keep him/her in sight and look at the baby and KNOW this is my incentive. You'll get there, SP is the BEST. And that's an excellent idea to not put a number to your goal, then you don't have to worry about that, and if you fall down, get up again and keep moving forward, you'll get there. Oh replace soda with water and you'll feel fuller too throughout the day. I never drank a glass of water AT ALL, unless that's all there was, but now I drink 8 glasses a day, and boy does it help fill me up..and to say that is a mouthfull. I wish you the best, and we're here for you if you need us. Oh, try starting a spark page, you can blog on there, put all sorts of stuff in it, it's wonderful! Have a great day, and good luck!

Hi, my name is Deanna. I recently had a baby and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during the pregnancy (insulin controlled). Ideally, my body would've returned back to normal, but my A1C continues to be elevated so I have been instructed to take this seriously and also lose some weight. I am new to Spark and using this as my first goal to keep me connected and accountable. I definitely want to lose some weight, but am not pinning myself to a goal number for the 8 weeks so the "perfectionist" in me will have no reason to give up at the end. Instead, I am focusing on lifestyle changes and for this eight weeks, they are: stop drinking soda and limit sugar substitutes, exercise 150 minutes or more per week, and to stay within my allotted calorie range. I would love a few buddies, so feel free to contact me:).

Excellent choice, MJohnson888, for me this was the perfect place..I had no discipline, no exercise, nothing healthy, but now I like exercising and I just started in February. Me..the person who'd rather sit and watch tv and eat my snacks, liking exercise, wow. Isn't it strange how Doctors seem to "miss" telling you something that important? Just amazing, but what a great weight loss, 42 pounds is nothing to laugh about, you're doing great and being here will help you tremendously. Good luck to you.

Hi, Lauralu105, welcome, you're at the same level many of us are, I' working towards 100 pounds too, I've got Type 1 Diabetes, so I'm not really up on Type 2, but I know my uncle and aunt have/had it and the discipline is nearly the same, I'm sure you will since your goal seems to be to avoid getting type 2 diabetes. Keep that in your mind everytime you eat a meal, exercise, just keep saying..this is keeping Type 2 away, and never lose focus of that. We're all here for both you and MJohnson888, so anything you need...just ask! Best of luck to you!

I'm new to Spark site & I have a long road to go to lose weight... a 100 lbs to lose. I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes a few months ago. I haven't been able to lose any weight & keep it off. I've been a yo-yo dieter all of my life. I found this site & I also hope it will help me lose weight & help me avoid getting type 2 diabetes, too.

Hello. It took me 3 months of visiting Sparkpeople to see what was going on before joining a group. I was diagnosed as being insulin resistant (prediabetes) as of February 22; due to too over indulging with beer and food. The doctor explained that losing weight was the only solution to avoid type 2 diabetes. That day I was given a recap of my file and it stated that during a hospital stay last April, there was a diagnosis of congestive heart failure. I was never informed of this. Stopped smoking immediately. So there are my challenges: no beer, no cigarettes and to lose weight. From December 18, I've lost 42# but have at least 90 to go, ergo, I'm signing up.

Hi, Angela, welcome...use the fact that you're here with others like you, as part of your motivation, we lean on one another and get through nearly everything together. Also, find something that you would love to do, or something similar, that benefits YOU, and focus on that. Then if you need to find another motivator, use someone you love, something you'd always wanted to do..set your goal, and keep it in view every day you're going down this line of getting your goal. I wish you the best of luck!

Greetings, Blane, I'm guessing Type 2, because Type 1, there is no avoiding, unfortunately. The best time to start is now, whenever that "now" time may be. This is a great program, the food portion of it, does nearly everything for you, in regards to finding what you eat and the facts about what you eat, I'm really loving that! Remember, we're always here if you need us, just ask. Good luck!

Hi, Grammy7070, and welcome to the board. You're doing wonderfully on your A1c fantastic. That's a huge start, and like I said to Blane, the nutrition area is fantastic, I have no problems at all following it, and if not for that, I'd still be eating a ton more! Even with what I eat now, because there are 2 snacks, and drinking the water, I feel full all the time, that's great. Glad to have you here with us. :) We're here for you too, never forget!

Hello, Rskynaston; you're in the same boat as a lot of people on the board here, both with being diagnosed with prediabetes, and type 2, so don't be afraid to ask questions, we're here for one another. Best of luck to you.

Greetings Adeejazz, welcome to you too. There are exercises here, of all sorts, from very easy to very hard if you want to use those too. The combination will really get you going and this coming from someone who HATED exercising!! I wish you the best!

Hi, Ctfemme, glad to have you here, you're in a great group of people, all here to help one another. There are a ton of ideas on here, do your spark points list and you'll discover a lot of things you never knew were here, it's well worth it. We're behind you all the way!

I am 49 and I was just diagnosed with prediabetes this week. I need to improve my health by losing weight and having a healthier diet. My doctor is suggesting a drastic diet change (broiled fish, vegetables, egg whites only), but I'm hoping for some ideas on healthier diets that's not so drastic.

I'm 62 years old and was diagnosed with T2 diabetes several years ago. I have managed to keep my HgbA1c between 6.3 -6.7. I really wasn't given much info, except watch my diet . I have since switched doctor and want to stay proactive. I've joined Spark people to help me lose weight, and to get motivated. I have learned so much from all the great articles and info on Spark people. I'm always looking for any new advice, recipes and motivation. I am also here for all of you. Thanks for this great site..

Hi, mary, welcome, use that nutrition area, it does help, and that's coming from someone who never could stop eating. I now follow that diet and seem to be fuller than I was before! Best of luck to you!

Hello, CokeyPokey, welcome to you too. The only advice I can give is that which I took myself...follow the nutrition area, do you workouts, even if it's for 3 days a week (you can build up), never put yourself down for any reason, always be proud of yourself, and know, even when there's stumbling blocks, there's ways around them. Drink 8 glasses of water, I rarely drank 1, and now that I've gotten started, I miss drinking it so much, and it does help you stay away from eating as much, because the water fills you up. I'm Type 1 Diabetic since 1975 so I'm not an expert on Type 2, but I do know that if you stay on cue and follow your diet, lose weight, etc, you may not end up on further meds for it. Best of luck and remember to lean on others here, we're here to help one another.

Hi I recently joined this Sparkteam. I am 58. Currently I am prediabetic. I take 1000 mg a day of metformin. My goal is to lose weight, exercise and get off metformin. I am looking for support, guidance and any words of wisdom people might offer. Thank you. I feel bad about taking metformin...mostly because I feel I am being lazy by not taking my health more seriously.

That's exactly right, Linda, having Type 2 you may be able to get off the meds if you're able to decrease your weight and get your blood sugars under control, I've seen that happen before. I wish you the best in achieving this goal, I'm sure you can do it.

*Puts on my cheerleading outfit...well..if I had one... gets out the ponpoms, and smiles BIG* yep, we're here to cheer you on, NewSarah2013, GIVE ME A M (waits) give me a O (waits) give me a T (waits) give me an I (waits) give me a V (waits)..oh heck, this is taking too long, what's that spell...nevermind, motiv...but it's short for MOTIVATION!! We're here for you and for each other, so if you need anyone to chat with, talk to, just hit us in private message, at least that goes for me, and we'll help in any way we can. We're all trying to reach that goal and we'll get there, one step at a time. We may stumble or fall, but we get right back up and try again until we get there! I wish you the best!!

Hi, Darlene, the nutrition area here helps me tremendously with keeping my blood sugars under control, with having to put in my blood sugars and what I eat then it figures everything out for me, what I need to stay between in order to lose, it's so easy. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, I lost my Dad in Feb 2012 and my aunt in Mar 2012 (then 14 others throughout last year), so I kind of know what you mean. But remember this..I'm not going to say you have to do this for your son, in his memory, you have to do this for YOU! You need to live so you can tell others about him, otherwise how will they know, right? just like with my Dad and the others I've lost. We move forward knowing that we will reach our goals, and we WILL be proud of ourselves for doing so. If you need to talk, I'm here, just pm me and i'll listen, even if you just want to rant and rave, I'll just be there, silently, if that's all you want...I can take it, I've been through it myself, the pain, the anger, etc. But please know, we're all here for you and for each other. I wish you the best with making the doctors appointment, that's so important for those of us with Diabetes! Take care of YOURSELF FIRST, always remember that!

Thanks for your encouragement. You are so right about importance of getting our levels under control. My friend was diabetic, but her death was attributed to other health issues. But still, I have heard from others that getting my weight down and learning healthy eating and lifestyle habits can get me off my meds as though I did not even have DBM 2.

Hi, Renee, welcome, this is one of the best places I've ever found. After having a problem with my insulin pump, I've been able to get my diabetes back under control and my weight has started coming down again. I'm so glad I found SP, I've been Type 1 Diabetic since 1975 and I love this place. Welcome to the "club", ask anything, they're (and we're) glad to help.

Hi, Tishmoore38, I was having high readings in the morning and this is usually due to what's called the "Dawn Effect or phenomenon", in other words, your body's natural changes which happen while you sleep when it has little or no need for insulin that happens between midnight and 3am, any insulin taken during that time causes your blood sugar to drop, then between 3 am and 8am your body starts putting out the stored glucose to prepare for the day plus releasing hormones your body naturally has. All of this happens when your nighttime insulin is wearing off, SO with all that happening, your blood sugar is rising and thus you have a higher blood sugar when you wake up in the morning. I hope that all makes sense. If not, just do a search on the dawn phenomenon, and you'll find out more about it. Many diabetics have problems with that happening, I had a huge adjustment to my insulin intake, even on the pump, when I first got it. I hope that helps!

CapitalB1, my sister in law lost a close friend to an insulin reaction, so I know what you're going through, in a way, it's so important to get your blood sugars under control, not only because you can die from insulin reactions, but because of the long term affects of high blood sugars. I'm so glad to hear you've set goals and are working towards them...remember, we're here to help you out, I wish you the best!

After dinking around with my diabetes for 3 years, I have decided to get serious about my weight management and exercise. I lost a dear friend on Friday; she was only 50. That was a bit of a wake-up call. So my goals long term are to lose 82 pounds. But more than that, I want to be healthy aand fit.

Hi all. My diabetes has taken a turn and I feel like it is a bit out of control. SO I'm getting it together. It can be so frustrating...Does anyone else have unusually high readings in the morning?

Hello, I'm Renee. I posted to the wrong place but hopefully I have found the right one this time! The DR's are thinking I am pre diabetic but can't come to a full conclusion yet. I have many other issues going on so it's hard to match up the symptoms. So many overlap. Anyway, I'm glad to be here and hoping through all your knowledge I can improve my health.

Hi, Loratta...I don't think you can move from Type 1 to Type 2...Type 1 is what I have, Juvenile onset, it's normally where the pancreas barely, if even works. Type 2 normally starts when you're older and things change in your body. I'm not sure if it's possible to move from one to another, as I've only had Type 1 since 1975 and know no other kind. :)

Anyway, It is possible to have Type 2 and need to take insulin injections, that is very possible, sometimes with Type 1 you can start out with pills, and then have to move to shots or a pump (which is what I'm using and LOVE) but I really don't think you move from Type 1 to Type 2, I've never heard of that.

Anyway, I'm glad you're here, we'll help you as much as we can, if you have questions, please ask, we're here to support one another any and every way we can. Have a GREAT DAY!
