HELLO''
I AM TRYING TO LOSE ABOUT FIFTY POUNDS IN FOUR MONTHS. I WENT TO MY DOCTOR AND SHE SAID MY A1c is elevated. I am not on medication and trying to avoid taking anything. I have cut the sweets from diet and really am looking at my carbs that I eat.

I thought I would take this challenge and get active
Can't wait to meet everyone!

Welcome to the team all you new members! I have just completed the challenge and it really helped me. I have limited mobility, so used the video's for seated exercises, found some awesome stretch exercises, and read/still reading the articles. My fears were replaced with knowledge, which makes a huge difference ,as we can control this with diet and exercise. Wish all you new people, to this challenge, the very best and am glad you found this forum, it is super.

Hi! I found out just a little over a month ago I have Type 2 Diabetes. When I went to the dr. I kind of expected to be told that but it was still a big shock when he told me. It has not been to hard but it hasn't been easy changing my eating either.

Hello, I am starting this challenge again because I need a plan and accountability. It really helped last time and as the weather gets colder I find myself wanting more comfort foods. I am not on medicine and I want to keep it that way. I love to walk on trails and feel the sunshine on my face. I appreciate all support and encouragement and am willing to give the same. Good luck to everyone.

Hi Team. I am pre-diabetic with elevated blood sugar. My doctor asked that I lose about 25 pounds over the next 3-6 months. I saw the 8-week challenge it seemed like a perfect fit as I need to incorporate strength training with my cardio. Tough time starting my weight loss challenge at the beginning of the holidays, but I know with your support I will be successful.

Thanks Coach Nicole for being such a positive role model!

Good luck everyone as we take control of the rest of our lives!

Good Morning:

I am hoping that I have finally heard the wake up call. Type-2 for about a decade. Now on 3 oral meds and facing the needle. I am scared! I downloaded the Challenge to my Kindle and I am ready to dig in. We can do this!

My most recent A1C is 8.1.
My fasting blood sugar reading this morning is 207... emoticon UGH

Hi!!! I have been here before and had great success. Then I decided to try it again. Well, I didn't finish the next two times as I was working a lot....approximately 80 hours a week, A lot has changed in my life. First, I used to weigh 304 lbs. I don't reflect it here as it was too embarrassing to admit. I am down to 205 (I was down to 202.5 but gained a couple back - explanation in a bit). Second, I am now on insulin by choice. The pills were tearing my stomach up and hid a serious situation that really got out of hand. More on this later as well. Third, I am not working nearly as much due to medical reasons.

In September, I ended up in the hospital and loved the Lantis so much I decided this was the route for me. My stomach was delighted! All the others caused me much discomfort. As I mentioned this hid a more serious problem, I had a small umbilical hernia that went totally amuck. Let's just say I came out of the hospital with less parts. If you have one of those little suckers, get it taken care of...lol. I am still recuperating as this is week seven. There is an upside, while they were repairing and removing, they noticed my poor gallbladder and removed it as well. It was so infected it actually put an abscess on my poor next door liver. All is well now I believe. After four weeks of picc cath and strong anti b's we are hoping that abscess is a thing of the past. The good thing is removing my gallbladder ended a lot of stomach problems I have had since I was a small child. Who would have thought I might have been born with a nasty gall bladder!!! That explains the little weight gain as I have enjoyed ;eating for the first time in years. No Mylanta, no Tums, no other pills!!!

So I am back to get back on track. I need the support. Exercise has been hard with the incision and I will be talking to the doctor about what to expect and limitations today. My aim is to continue losing weight through the holidays. Well, start back to losing weight. I would like to be 199 by the beginning of the year.

Enough about me. I am looking forward to meeting lots of people, getting support and giving support. I definitely have time on my hands!!!

The Lord doesn't expect us to work harder than we are able. He doesn't (nor should we) compare our efforts to those of others. Our Heavenly Father asks only that we do the best we can - that we work according to to our full capacity, however great or however small that may be.

Hello friends, I am returning to spark people. I am 57 with type 2 insulin supported diabetes.i am impressed with the members of this challenge. Kudos to those of you that are taking action before a diabetic diagnosis. We all have struggles that thwart our daily progress. Knowing others share and support those struggles is so powerful. Thanks in advance for your support. May your day be filled with love.

Hi. My name is Darlene. I have not been officially diagnosed with any form of Diabetes. However, My recent bloodwork results show that a diagnosis is not far off. My fasting glucuse was 98 (the high end of the normal range) and my Hemoglobin A1c was 6.2 (consistent with prediabetes) Last year my glucose was 83 and the A1c was 5.7, so this year's numbers were a bit of a shock. emoticon emoticon

My maternal grandmother was an insuliin-dependent Type 2 Diabetic, with an undiagnosed heart condition and she passed away two years ago from complications of both. I'd rather not wait until getting diagnosed to make any changes and would like to do this 8-week challenge as a way of halting this progression. emoticon

Hi Everyone! My name is Cat and I've been a Type 2, LADA (that's a Type 1.5),and now a Type 1 diabetic (all) since 1996. I absolutely hate this disease and my behavior has shown that. For years, I ate and drank what I wanted and I really didn't care. I ignored the problem. But I think deep down I knew it wasn't going to go away, that it was getting worse. A 5 stay in the hospital with DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis) really opened my eyes. This isn't a game anymore. This is serious. I've been slowly changing habits and I taught myself how to cook and bake and enjoy food. Well, I think I've enjoyed a little too much of that food. I gained a significant amount of weight and want to drop it. It will be a challenge because I'm on a ton of medications including a very concentrated insulin (Humulin R [U500]). I've joined SP a little over a year ago but have only used it here and there. That will change today. Oh and I'm at the same weight I was at when I joined last year. Weird but good. I like cooking, baking, writing, and reading. The Two Fat Ladies are my cooking idols. (Some people don't think that's a good idea but they are!!!) Enjoy the day and thank you for listening.

Hello from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada!

I'm a type one diabetic since November 1999. My daughter was also diagnosed with type one in May 2013.

I joined this challenge because I want to finish 2013 on a good side :)
Tomorrow, Sunday November 17 will be my official day one! I'm also open to having buddies during this challenge to keep each other accountable!

Well I can say one thing for me I never give up so here I am back again to attempt to meet the 8 week challenge..I am praying this time I complete it and drop pounds, inches and really learn to control my eating habits, much of it from stress. I went to the dr. today and he never gives up on me. I am dealing with this more now then ever before. I am now taking more meds for the diabetes and the neuropathy is terrible in my hands and feet. I did not realize how bad it really was in my hands till the weather turned cold...cold is not a friend to me right now, but the dr. put me on a medicine that is suppose to help it so I pray it does. I am looking forward to the challenge more this time then any other. I am 64 and planning to retire the end of 2014. I want to retire from my job which is midnight police dispatcher, and go home and stay on my farm, where I live with my husband, his mother lives with us and I am her caregiver, she is 89 and my husband is also disabled. I have a family member stay with them while I work midnights. I have an hour drive each way and have done this now for the past 19 years.(The drive not taking care of my husband and his mom that long but for over 7 years we have cared for her.) . It is time to go home and just take care of me and my family. This 8 week challenge I pray is the jump start I need. I pray I succeed this time. Good luck to all of you also.
I just know with all the great SP tools we can do this..

My husband has type 2 diabetes and I am pre-diabetic, but if I don't get "on the ball" I'll be diabetic very soon. My husband does not need insulin, yet and we'd like to avoid that need.

It looks like you all are in week 2 of the 8 week challenge, is it still okay to join now?

For love and long-life. God will give me strength

My name is Shelba. I have a pet poodle named Jakie. I have type 2 diabetes controlled by diet. So it is important that I eat right. That's where Spark People will come in handy. It helps me track and keep up with my goals. As far as myself I taught school, worked for AT&T, and AFLAC. I have 3 children and 5 grandchildren

I live in a small beach town outside of Jacksonville, i've missed a lot in my life because my weight.. That ends today.

Hi there...I'm new Here too. MAGGIESTG story is almost identical to mine. Only I've succumbed to the candy and have been binging. Was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and did OK for couple of months, but have lost control and slipped back into unhealthy eating habits and have stopped exercising. I see my doctor next month and am afraid my A1C will b even higher. Hope to find some inspiration in this team.

Hi, new here today. The lure of Halloween candy is a strong force! I've been trying to cut down on the pounds but just am not having any success. My ultimate goal is to get down to 146 lbs but for now I'm focussing on the first 20. Hopefully this 8-week challenge will help me! The hardest part for me these days is moving....arthritis in my hips and back make walking excruciating but I know I have to do it. Any suggestions to moving and not feeling pain?

Hi Everyone,

I am 69 years old and have been borderline diabetic for the past two doctor's visits. I have decided to do something about it, and I hope to get some tips and motivation from this group. I started walking, although it is a bit painful. And I have committed to eating more grains, beans, veggies, and fruit. I thought I was doing all the right things (silly me) but I realized that exercise was the missing component. I'm looking forward to learning from all of you.

Hi everyone! I'm Chris, and I'm relatively new to diabetes. I don't have an official diagnosis, but my A1C was a 10. I've not been issued medication yet as I am working closely with my Dr. to get it under control naturally. I've gone from 250 morning/210ish postprandial to 150-160 morning/110-120 postprandial in 4 weeks. still a bit to go and the change has to be permanent, but I feel confident I can keep it up. I recently wrote a blog about my new experience:

Let me know what you think. It's been a real eye opener for me.

Hi everyone, it is a pleasure to be here with you now.

I too struggle with eating too much fat and sugar and depression along with it.
I joined this challenge because my body is starting to show signs of damage and I want to limit it but old habits die hard!!!
Perhaps by joining others and feeling less isolated in the struggle and journey I can find some freedom and friendship!

Hi,
My name is Casey and I am joining the Diabetes Weight Loss Challenge. I was diagnosed 13 years ago, and have yet to get on top of this disease. I am on so many medications, and have so many other health problems now as a result it is disheartening. I HAVE to do this!! I can't live....like this anymore. I am also afraid that my grown children will develop this disease and I won't have taught them it can be managed with the right diet and exercise.

Hi! My name is Lisa. I am a professional roller coaster dieter. I get motivated and start off great, but then when something negative happens, I fall apart. I am currently fighting with my depression. It has been winning up to this point and I am slowly fighting back. I have so much going on right now and no one to really talk to about it. I have tried to get advice, but so far, have gotten no answers. So, this is a new attempt for me. I am 47, type 2 non insulin diabetic. I have a lot of trouble with taking the time to figure out what to eat and write everything down. I chose this challenge because it is an 8 week challenge and my son (whom I haven't seen in 6 years) is coming up for Christmas and that is in 8 weeks. I have a lot to look forward to in my life and want to get healthy to enjoy it.

i cant remember if i introduced myself of not. so many pages. so much to read and do.i get a little overwhelmed, but will try to figure this out. i'm diabetc--non-insulin. number have shot up recently as has my blood pressure. at age 62, admitted to hospital for first time this week because excessively high b/p. so another wake up call although i have been working on diabetes and blood sugar this year. need support as i so often just feel overwhelmed and want to sit down and bawl like a baby. any word to those just wanting to get sugar undercontrol before becoming diabetic---good for you!! prevention must be easier than the latter.

onward to figuring out sparks website!!

Hi I am new to Sparkpeople. Working on diet control for diabetes. Sugars are not yet high enough to justify medication so I am trying to keep it that way.

Hello, new to spark but not new to Diabetes. I like to hear success stories and inspirational motives by others. For example: I do not like the word "control" when it comes to Diabetes I like to use words that have a more positive feeling or directive. Currently I am using guidance from my Diabetes Nutritionist. I know that I often need a tune up in my habits. (My new words). Plus there are always advancements in this area that I need to learn. I will go to the Nutritionist about once a year for guidance and improvements in my treatment. I also realize that she can help me most when I provide good data in terms of time of glucose measurements and the amount of carbohydrate I have eaten, how much exercise I do, plus timing of taking my medications. All of this data helps the Diabetic Nutritionist / RN help me. I have found some simple things that make my treatment more successful and manageable. emoticon

I just want to stay informed about diabetes. I am a diabetic but control it with diet rather than medicine. I hope to keep the ability to control diabetes with my diet. That's why I am so interested in gaining any information on the subject.

Hi: I'm not new to Spark People. It has taken me this long to really, really, really get serious about my diabetes. I'm a type 2 - my A1C level is 9.9 and my current weight is 286 lbs. Currently i'm taking oral medication to control my diabetes. Just recently, i've been managing to keep my diabetes level under 100 when I checks it in the mornings. That's real progress for me because it was being over 200 and sometimes nearly 300 in the a.m. time. I really need to get serious about my health. I need encouragement and everything else.

I signed up for this challenge in July but now I am completing it because my A1C is at 6 and my doctor says I need to bring it down. So I know this is what I want and need now.
