Hi Everyone, I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. It scares me. I am trying to educate myself about the disease and lower my fasting blood glucose to a healthier range. I'm so glad I found SparkPeople.

Committed to Healthy Living, not perfection, one day at a time.

Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with type 2 in October of 2013. My desire is to work harder at changing my eating habits, but mostly to get more active. I have a wonderful, supportive family but still lack a lot of motivation. It's hard to realize the dangers of diabetes when it's something you can't see until it's too late.

hi, was diagnosed about 5 years ago but...well i never admitted it until the last week or so. until then took pills now and then....watched what i ate here and there. Now...i realize that is not the way to go. my A1C was 10.8....my average fbs was 297....time to stop and start taking care of me. In a week my fasting bs are averaging in low 130's...today was 125 :) He started me on a third med for couple weeks ..and i am taking it but think will ask to take it away when go back next month. Don't like the way makes me feel and i know that just the two work fine when i watch my diet and actually take them. I just was not taking the second one at all and the metformin i was taking now and then when thought of it. Obviously not going to work that way. i do have question though on the metformin...am supposed to take twice a day...how far apart do most take it? 10 hours....12? am a night person so do not usually take first one until about 11am....should i take the second at 11pm? Will ask the Dr as well when i go but until then curious what others have been told. Thanks for the support have already received since i have been here. Has helped alot.

searching for the me i left behind.

Hi, I'm Allie, I'm 50, and I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes last week. I'm overweight and live a relatively sedentary life, and those things need to change. I'm a Walmart cashier, working part-time, and I also bake cookies for a local restaurant's dessert menu. It's going to be hard baking those cookies and not sneaking tastes of the dough and the finished product. My 21-year old son lives with me, and as he is dieting as well, we are working together to make ourselves healthier. It seems easier to do this as a team.

WOW!! I see we have lots of new members on this team since I've been off of here this past week for surgery myself!! I'm going to try to make this to fit all of you at once so bear with me please.

MARIE, KANDLE, CHRISTAL, CRYSSY, CHERIE, ROBYN and SPARK:

First, I want to emoticon all of you to our great team/challenge. There's a lot to learn on this challenge but just take it one step and one day and a time.

If you haven't already done so, please go to the SITE GUIDE at the top of your Start Page and go through the Welcome Guide and the Site Tour Video. These will both help you to learn about the site and help you get around t.

Next, go to the ARTICLES & VIDEOS section also located at the top of your Start Page. It is here that you can learn so many different things. Learn all you can about diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes, symptoms of diabetes, and the complications that can happen with uncontrolled diabetes. You will also be able to find videos of different exercises, recipes, motivation etc.

Now, go to the My Trackers. It is here where you'll find the MY NUTRITION tracker. It is a great tool. It will give you excellent feedback as to whether or not you need to increase or decrease the number of calories, carbs, fats, and protein each day. The MY FITNESS tracker will help you to become accountable to yourself.

CHRISTAL - - When you make a meal, make it large enough so that you can freeze part of it for another day or even two days. There is a group on here that deals with making meals, recipes etc.

Eat your 3 meals and 1-3 snacks a day. The snacks will help you keep from over eating at the next meal as well as help to keep your blood sugars under control. Try to make your snacks with a carb and protein.

Set yourself some small goals - something that you know you will succeed at such as eating so many "freggies" (fruits and vegetables) emoticon emoticon a certain number of days to start, or increasing your non-calorie fluids emoticon so many in a day and so many times a week, or even 7-9 hours of sleep emoticon so many nights a week.

Try to get 10 minutes of exercise emoticon emoticon in each day. If 10 minutes is too much for you at one time, then go for two 5-minute exercises. All the minutes and steps all add up to weight loss emoticon .

CRYSSY - I use to work in an Alzheimer's Unit until I retired and I know how stressful it can be and also the need to get out and regroup and energize yourself by the end of the day. The exercise will help you to not only lose weight but it's a great stress reducer/outlet for all of us. I commend you for taking care of your family. There's all kinds of support out there. I'm sure that if you check into it, you will find a Respite Care offered by some of the social services as well. Don't be afraid to use it - - you deserve it and owe it to yourself as well.

Two things to remember are 1) You are never alone on this new healthy lifestyle. We are all going through this journey together and 2) YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!! We are here to help support and encourage one another.

Feel free to read over each other's posts/blogs. There's apt to be something on someone else's that be of interest to you or that maybe you can help them with or to encourage them in some way or another!! Helping others can be a Blessing to you!! Don't miss out on it!

Don't strive for perfection but instead strive to do the best you can do and on being consistent. We all have our bad times - even the leaders - but the thing is that you need to be forgiving of yourself. We are fortunate that there is always another day, a fresh start!!!

If you have any questions, please feel free to voice them in your Weekly Discussions. Let us know about your day, your successes etc. There's always someone lurking around the site to help, support, and encourage you and each other.

Now that your introduction to the team is done, go to the Weekly Discussions 1-8 and let's get started!!! emoticon and together emoticon .

Have fun and enjoy your journey!!

Hi ! I am new to Spark. I have been a diabetic since 1997. Sometimes you think you have it made then you get knocked down. My dad just passed away in September. Before that I had lost 37 pounds. It has taken me a while to get things together, I just got medical coverage from Covered Ca and my medical coverage gives discount on Weight Watchers !! Yeah !! I can start there in March, but I need somewhere where I can get support now. I need support from people who know how to deal with diabetes. That is not easy to find. I am not on any medication now, and I have been a little emotional and out of control. I need to rein it in and get back on track. Thanks for all your help. I hope this will be a great start to my hopes of getting healthier...day by day....

While getting treated since Oct for EBV they discovered I am type 2 diabetic and got scheduled for classes. Two weeks ago had to be admitted cardio icu floor for 9 days of riboviarin thearapy and loads of IVs. The diabetes went wild so we had loads of attention during my 2 hour breaks in breathing therapy. Expecting to see lipid DR before I run out of insulin this week. A lot to deal with at once but been through worst.

KAREN - Welcome to the team. We're so glad you decided to join us. There's a lot to learn on this challenge so just take it one day and one step at a time.

I'd like you to go to your Start Page and there you will see many tabs towards the top of the page. In the Guide Site you will find our Welcome Guide and our Site Tour Video. These will give you an overall of our site and help you to get around easier.

Learn all you can about diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes, symptoms of diabetes, as well as complications of uncontrolled blood sugars. You can do this by going to the tab that says ARTICLES & VIDEOS. You will also find videos of different exercises, recipes, cooking etc etc.

In the MY TRACKERS tab there are two trackers that are important to your success on this journey of your new healthy lifestyle. 1) MY NUTRITION tracker will give you excellent feedback as to whether or not you need to increase or decrease your calories, carbs, fats, and proteins. 2) MY FITNESS tracker will help you to be accountable to yourself. Look over the other topics in this tab also.

Eat your 3 meals and 1-3 snacks per day. The snacks will help to keep you from over eating at the next meal as well as to help keep your blood sugars from spiking or crashing. The snacks should consist of a carb and a protein.

Set a couple of small goals for yourself - something that you know you will be able to succeed at such as increasing your non-calorie fluids each day, increase your freggies (fruits and vegetables) each day/week, getting your 7-9 hours of sleep so many times a week. Set your weight loss goal at no more than 5-10% of the total weight that you want/need to lose - any more than that and you are apt to set yourself up for frustration and we all know what that leads too.

You are not alone on this journey. We are all going through this journey with you. YOU ARE WORTH IT!!

If you have any questions, please let us know as you go through your Weekly Discussions 1-8 and someone will gladly get back to you real soon.

Have fun and enjoy your journey.

Hello all. I'm a wife and mother of 2. I've had diabetes since 2007. I was on a good weight loss journey until last year when I got pregnant with my son, who is now 4 months old. I'll be honest, I'm a little bummed out about starting over again. So I joined this challenge for motivation and for support from people dealing with similar issues.

Let's go team!

Learning some time ago that I was headed for type 2 diabetes if I didn't begin taking proper steps was not the motivation that put me on the path of a "life time" change in habits. It was learning that my 12 yr old (now 13) had elevated insulin levels and the insight that if we as a family didn't take this serious we might all be headed down a road of health related issues. The problem is my DH is in total denial and is not as "on board" with the new health kick as I am. Currently, I have only been diagnosed as pre-diabetic but I am afraid that may only be because I have not followed up with my own doc lately since I am running to the pediatrician and dietician for the DD. I have ventured in and out of SP for several years but not gotten serious in a while. I have struggled with my weight most of my life but most recently allowed it to get out of control. I also have Hashimoto's (low thyroid) and early signs of liver disease. I wanted to join this challenge to gain control of my health and to set a better example for my DD. Perhaps maybe even the DH will become more interested when he sees both of us taking it more serious!

Hi there!
My name is Keith from northern PA. I have type 2 diabetes, got it in 2004. Fortunate that I only have a 5 mg pill per day to control it. I am here to lose weight by using your tools that are available here. I am on the obese side of the scale, but am going to get myself to just plain fat by the end of March. I started tracking my food intake on a competitor site with the initials of mfp. I will continue to track my food there as I am a member of a fantastic support group. But I will come here to get the exercise videos and support as that isn't part of the other site!

THANKS!
Keith

KAT - emoticon to the team. We are here to help, support, and encourage you along your journey. There is a lot to learn on this program so just take it one day and one step at a time. Look through the other tab subject as well. In the Articles & Videos section you will find videos of different exercises, recipes, cooking etc. You will also find a health section. Learn all you can on diabetes - what causes diabetes, how to treat diabetes, and the complications of uncontrolled diabetes.

With you having hypoglycemic episodes as I also have, be sure to eat your three meals a day as well as your 1-3 snacks each day. The snacks are important to not only keep you from being hungry in between meals, but also to help keep your BSs more even and to prevent you from having those lows with your sugar. Your snacks can be as late in the day as you need as long as you don't go over your allowed calories for the day UNLESS, of course, you take your sugar before you go to bed and it is already getting low (I try to keep mine at 120 or higher before bedtime because I can crash really fast with no warnings).

In the My Trackers, you will find several things but I would like to draw your attention to - the Nutrition Tracker and the Fitness Tracker. The Nutrition Tracker will give you great feedback on whether you need to increase or decrease your calories, carbs, fat, and protein. The Fitness Tracker will help to keep you accountable to yourself.

Set yourself some small goals - something that you know you will be able to succeed such as maybe drinking so many glasses of calorie-free beverage, or eating so many fruits and vegetables each day per week, or getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night for so many nights a week. Just keep it simple. Set your goal weight at no more than 5-10% of the total amount of weight you want or need to lose.

You are never alone on this journey so if you need some help, encouragement or whatever, please let us know on your weekly discussions. There's always someone lurking around the site somewhere and we'll get right back at you real soon. emoticon and together emoticon because YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!

PAULINE, FAITHY2000 - emoticon to the team. We are here to help, support, and encourage you along your individual journeys. If you haven't already done so, I would like you both to go to your Start Page. Once there, you will find several tabs: Start, My Trackers, Articles & Videos, Community, Site Guide, and Help. I would like you to go to the Site Guide. Once there you will find topics for the Welcome Guide and the Site Tour Video. Click on each one of those topics which will help you through the program.

SIMADOWNOW - emoticon to the team!!! So glad you could make it!! Now's as good as a time as any to turn things around for you!! emoticon .

I, too, am hypoglycemic with more often than not having any signs or symptoms of my BSs crashing until I hit next to bottom!! Be sure to eat your 3 meals a day and I would eat 2-3 snacks a day as well. I, myself, have chosen to eat 3 snacks a day to help keep my BSs from crashing. Just be sure that you stay within your calorie range given to you by the dietician or physician. Have your snacks include carbs and protein. By eating these snacks on schedule, your metabolism will stay working well for you. You will also keep you from over eating at meals and will help keep your BSs on a more even keel. Drink plenty of non-calorie fluids to help get the toxins out of your body.

Set yourself some small goals such as increasing your fluids emoticon , getting more sleep emoticon (7-9 hours a night) at night, increasing your "Freggies" (fruits and vegetables) emoticon emoticon etc. Set your weight loss goal at no more than 5-10% of your total weight you want/need to lose - any more than that and you are apt to set yourself up for frustration and we know what happens when we get frustrated.

I would suggest you start out with the Welcome Guide and the Site Tour Videos which can be found at the top of the Start Page under the tab called "Site Guide".

ARTICLES & VIDEOS SECTION: Learn all you can about diabetes - what causes it, how to treat it, and the complications that can occur with uncontrolled blood sugars. You will find out everything pertaining to diabetes and any other health issues you might have or be interested in in this section as well as exercise videos, recipes etc.

Look over the other Sections/TABS as well. There is a lot of information to learn here but just take it one day and one step at a time. Don't be in a rush. If, at the end of the first week, you still aren't comfortable then take some extra time until you are comfortable with it.

Now, let's jump right on into the Weekly Discussion for Week 1 and let's get started.

You are never alone here as we are all on this journey together. emoticon and together emoticon

If you have any questions, please feel free to voice them and someone will get back with you real soon to help you out.

Have fun and enjoy your journey.

PATTYANN23 - If you're high risk, then now is definitely the time to do something to prevent that risk from going full steam into diabetes.

If you haven't already done so, do the Welcome Guide and Site Tour Video found on the Start Page. It is located towards the top of the page under the Site Guide Tab.

Be sure to look over the other tabs listed as well. There's a lot of information in them. Take it just one day and one step at a time. Set some small goals for yourself - something that you'll be able to succeed at.

Be sure to join in the Weekly Discussions Weeks 1-8. Read through other members blogs/discussions as well and encourage with one another along their journey as well.

If you have any questions, please let us know and someone will get back to you real soon.

Have fun and enjoy your journey to a healthy life style.

Christina - - I love my tracker!! Yes, it measures my steps very well. It keeps me motivated as I'm always checking to see how many lights are lit up on it several times a day. It's well worth the money. You can even wear it swimming as well as in the shower. Some people have even forgotten to take it off when they wear it on their clothing and it's gone through the washing machine and still worked!! I wear my tracker on my shoe laces with the open end of the clip facing my toes. Sometimes if I'm not wearing shoes, I'll put it in my sock so it sits on top of my ankle and the open end still facing down and it tracks beautifully!! If I'm rocking in the rocker, it still counts it as steps but it shows up usually as Cycle Event. I've used other trackers from the stores but I'd replace this one again if anything were to happen to it. It's easy to set up and doesn't cost anything to get your daily reports either like the Fitbit does - they have a monthly fee - - SparkPeople Tracker does not - - it's free.

emoticon So glad you decided to join us again!!! I'm sure things have changed since you were here last year so be sure to look the site over. To begin with, look through the tabs at the top of your Start Page. Go to the Site Guide and begin with your Welcome Guide and Site Tour Video. I'm sure that will help a lot.

Set yourself some small goals - something that you know you'll be able to achieve. As you get those goals done then add some more goals. Set your weight goal with no more than 5-10% of the total amount of weight that you want/need to lose - -anymore than that and you are apt to set yourself up for frustration and we all know where frustration can lead us!!!

Use your Nutrition and Exercise Trackers as these two trackers will keep you accountable and the nutrition tracker will give you great feedback as to whether or not you need to increase/decrease your calories, carbs, fats, and proteins.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let us know and we'll be glad you get back to you real soon and help you out.

You are not alone on this journey. We are all here to help, support, and encourage one another along their individual journey. YOU ARE WORTH IT!!! emoticon and together emoticon .

Have fun and enjoy your journey.

I am actually not new to this team but I am rebooting all my programs: SparkCoach, virtual weigh in and this one.
This morning my FBG was 115 down from 141 yesterday. Shows what even one day of eating properly and exercising can do. emoticon

emoticon to the team Patricia!!! We are often in denial in the beginning of the diagnosis of diabetes. I know I was - - anger, frustration, denial, you name it!! BUT, emoticon .

Set yourself up some small goals - something that you know you will be able to achieve such as maybe increasing your emoticon , increasing your emoticon emoticon and emoticon emoticon , or even increasing your emoticon . Yes, getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night WILL HELP you lose weight. Set your weight goal to only 5-10% of the total weight you want/need to lose - anymore than that will leave you open to frustration and we know where frustration leads us!!!

Take it one day and one step at a time. Aim for 10 minutes of exercise a day or even two sets of 5 minutes a day if need be. Every step counts.

The Nutrition Tracker will give you some great feedback each day on whether or not you need to increase/decrease your calories, carbs, fat, or protein. Your Fitness Tracker will help to keep you accountable to yourself.

You are never alone on this journey - we are all on this journey together. So, lets get started on your Week 1 emoticon Action Plan!!

Enjoy your journey!!

Hi, I'm Patricia. I was diagnosed with Type 2 a couple of years ago, but was in denial. I've only recently started to control it with diet and exercise. I am not on medication and hope never to be. I am looking for a healthy way to control this.

emoticon to the group!!! You've just taken a big step - admitting that you needed help, even after 20 years of having diabetes, and taking that step to do something about it. I commend you! We've all had those times when we were unhappy with ourselves because we've let ourselves get in that position to begin with. Now, you need to learn to forgive yourself for that. That was then and this is now!! You're on the right track!!!

First of all, you need to set up your Create Spark Page. You can do that by going to your My Trackers. Click on that and go down to One Time Challenges and down just a few lines more you will find Create Start Page. By doing this, it will allow for others to add you to their "Friends List" and allow others to help, support and encourage you further along your journey.

Also, on your Start Page, on the right-hand side you will see a tab that says Site Guide. Click on that and you will find your Welcome package (if you haven't already done so), a Guided Site Tour as well as answers to the most common questions.

Check out the other tabs as well on that same page/line and look the site over. There is a lot to learn so just take it one day and one step at a time. Join us on the Weekly Discussion pages and chat/roll call pages so we can all get to know each other more.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let us know and someone will get back with her real soon to help you out.

Have fun and enjoy your journey. YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!!

Hi. My name is Micah Momient. I just joined yesterday and I am really looking forward to seeing this through to the end. I'm very unhappy with where I am and I know that it's due to so much that I've just allowed to take place to myself and bad diabetes management. It's amazing that I can say that I've taken bad care of my diabetes after having it for 20 years. However, I am willing to do what it takes to get back on track and become as healthy as I was once upon a time ago. LET'S GO!!!

MORNINGDOVE5 - Welcome to Diabetes Weight Loss Challenge. Losing weight as well as doing some strength training with the legs will help you get prepared for your new knee replacement. If you build up the muscles around the knee it will make for a more stable leg for your knee replacement. I had both knees replaced in 2006 three days apart and I have never regretted it one bit. According to the ortho doctor who did the knee replacements was so astounded with the amount of bend I have in both of my knees that he said that I actually have more bend in my knees than people who have never had knee problems. He was very pleased. So, that being said, let's jump right on in and get that weight off of you so you can get that knee done. You might be interested in also getting involved in some of the other challenges to help you get going on those exercises as well.

SparkPeople (SP) also has some real good videos on different exercises as well as chair exercises for when that knee is acting up and you can't get around real well on different days. You will find those in the Articles & Videos Section at the top of your Start Page.

I would also suggest that your "Create Your Spark Page" which can be done by going to My Trackers, also at the top of the Start Page. By doing that, it will allow others to put you on their "Friend Page" and give you other ways of receiving support and encouragement along your journey as well as allowing others to get to know you better and vice versa.

If you haven't done so already, Visit the Site Guide at the top of your Start Page. There you'll find the Welcome Guide, a Site Tour Video etc. Check out all the Sections at the top of the Start Page and look them all over. Lots of good information but just take it one day and one step at a time. Don't strive for perfection but strive for consistency.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and someone will be more than happy to get back with you real soon.

Have fun and enjoy your journey.
