Hi, I guess this is the introduction thread. (?)
I'm still learning my way around SP. There are a lot of areas?

I was always 15-20 pounds overweight but it was in the right places. I quit smoking 20 years ago and have been packing it on ever since. I am at 280 pounds. Everything hurts, I feel crummy, and I'm just over 60. It's gotta stop.

For the last year and a half, I HAVE been trying, and exploring different options. I went to Overeater's Anonymous for a few months. I joined Groups on Yahoo. I went back to the Zone. I went back to Weight Watchers. With each program, I found something good that will work for me now. And what doesn't work.

All in all, I am an emotional eater. I am carb sensitive. I probably am pre-diabetic but I don't have insurance so can't go get anything checked out. I cannot do Atkins type plans. If the carbs are too low, I get cracks in the corners of my mouth and muscle cramps.

I also retain water (too much sodium in diet). If the water leaves too quickly, which it can when you *suddenly* begin eating right, it caused me to get muscle cramps last time around.
I think I had an electrolyte balance. (this time I am ready with the Smart Water)

So with all these attempts and programs this last year and a half, I am ready and determined to get this done. I need adequate calories. A full carb portion at each meal. Good protein. Lots of vegetables and fruit. Some fat. Little to no sugar. When I do that, the weight comes off and I am not hungry.

I learned a lot about exchanges in the last year, and now plan my meals by food type. But bottom line, I will be keeping track by calories. I need to be real. There will come a time when I will want - and plan for - a piece of pie. Or some cookies.

Also, my biggest bug-a-boo is the stress eating or eating related to emotions. That is where I am focusing. Food will not make it better. Well, it will for a few minutes. But not long term.

So, that's a little bit about me and why I joined Spark People. I feel so positive and upbeat and just know that this time around is my time. I don't even care about being cute anymore. I just want to feel better, be healthy, have energy, and not be in bondage to food. I love the Lord, and I don't feel it brings Him glory when I cannot control myself.

Hi Trish! Welcome to the team. You make the fourth special ed teacher/specialist that I am aware of on this team. I think our jobs are just extremely stressful especially with all the cuts and the ever increasing case loads. I retired in April so have been finding it easier to care for myself.

I am Trish from Pine City, NY. I am a speech therapist for special needs' children. I only work during the school year. Last year, I worked out all summer from 9-11 while my children were at cross country practice. I never lost a pound all summer. When school started I recorded everything I ate. I tried to exercise at least once a week. I didn't lose one pound. I also didn't gain any weight either. Then spring track and baseball season came. I decided to take a break and not log in my nutrition tracker or fitness tracker. in 2 short months, I gained 10 pounds. Most of that was done by taking my children out to eat after their baseball game or track meet. Evening eating is definitely my downfall. School just ended for me last week. I am trying to get back on track, log my food daily, and get back on track. I'd like to lose those 10 pounds this summer...

I'm Becky, I don't have kids, unless you count the dog and two cats that tend to smother me while I attempt to sleep. I've been married for 8 years and live in OH. I have been overweight more than half of my life. I have been at my right weight when I was very young (9 and under) and then during my late teens and early 20's (17-23.) The last time I lost weight, I really thought it would stick, but it didn't and I've been discouraged ever since. I am currently the largest I've ever been (284) and I think I do my best to ignore it - it's not easy. I am about 130 to 120 pounds over weight and it just seems impossible and overwhelming. The scariest things are the effects it has on my health, but i even tend to ignore those things too. I don't know why I ignore things and I have tried over and over again to make things important to myself that I know should be, but it hasn't stuck either. I'm going to try again and I pray God will help this time.

Never mistake failure as final

Deciding what you want your life to be like is not hard. Deciding what you are willing to do and give up to get it, is the hard part.

I will do what I need to do in order to do what I want to do.

What you do and say is a reflection of who you are, so decide who you want to be and do it.

Janet,
Being from the NW too, I don't know how you are handling the humid heat. I am very interested in the RV lifestyle, because I am also considering it for Hubby and me. We need to simplify due to health, but am not sure if an RV or an apartment would be a better choice.

Jacque,
Welcome to the team. I stress ate while working and did better during breaks. Probably an age difference thing.

Chris,
Your team definitely smacked at my weak spot. Glad you started it.

We have a pool here at the RV park but it is always full of kids and I don't even like swimming. When I get done re-doing the floors in the RV, I want to start using the Wii again. I get exercise on the two days I volunteer here by sweeping and mopping the floors in a building that is at least 2,000 sq ft, probably closer to 3,000. Dog walking these days generally consists of taking them out to do their business and coming back in. They don't even want to stay out in the middle of the day. I need to go to bed earlier and get up earlier so we can walk before it gets hot. I also need to get my husband working on the floor!

Hi. I am Jacque and I live in CO. I am 38 and the mother of three. I am a special education teacher as well. I find I overeat on the weekends and summer vacation. I think I am eating out of bordom. During the school year I am too busy to overeat most of the time. Between work and my kids activities I am rarely home to snack and I don't usually have the funds to eat out or grab a snack from somewhere. This means I only eat what I take with me. I also am not a night owl so I usually get home around 8 or 9 and am in bed shortly after that. However, now it is summer vacation and I am eating all the time. I find I do this on the weekends as well. I need to stop. I tell myself not to eat something before I do, but then turn around and do it anyway. I know this is a problem I need to break, but don't know how. I am glad summer school is starting tomorrow this will help Monday-Thursday.
I started SP in April of 2010. I have only lost 11 pounds. I believe my overeating on the weekends and during summer is a big part of why I haven't lost more. I have gone down 2 pants sizes thankfully or I don't think I would still be motivated to keep trying.
I am glad to be here and hope to get some great ideas to help me get back on track.

Janet, It looks like you have alot to handle right now. I also hate heat. My water aerobics is important to me because I can exercise and keep cool. It is not always possible to have a pool available. How do you cool off and how do you get exercise? Chris

Nice to meet everybody!!

Thanks a lot for Chris and Terri, I agree with both of you. We are all have almost the same metabolism. Sometimes I just feel discouraged and unmotivated by skinny people who keep saying things like it's their special ability to keep skinny all the time because some of them are like saying that it's my bad luck to have enormous weights. And I'm glad to hear from both of you that it's not true..!

I live in NW Oregon near the Columbia River. I lost 50 pounds since last fall. I have plateaued for about three months. It is time to break the plateau and start moving down again. I too struggle with night eating. It seems to be related to the big three. Refined sugar, wheat and TV. If I go upstairs to read or write, then I am fine, but if I stay near hubby or TV I am in trouble. I also have less cravings if I can remain sugar free and wheat free for three days in a row and eat my sweet fruits before noon.

I am a retired special ed teacher, forced into an early retirement at age 58 due to health reasons. Suspecting undiagnosed Lyme's, but it is currently diagnosed as CFS. The blessings have been the needed kick to take better care of myself, being home to actually cook healthy meals and spending more time with grandchildren.

My husband is disabled. We have two dogs. two sheep and a tailless raccoon. We live in the country in the hills.

Hi,
I'm Janet and I have a problem with snacking in the evening also. I do pretty good during the day (usually) although recently I have been craving sweets anytime of the day. I was doing well, exercising and eating properly. I don't know what happened.

I used to live in western WA but now live in Mississippi where the heat is just killing me. I don't want to exercise and I don't want to cook. I hope this team can help.

emoticon So good to see our new team growing already!!!

I'm Debbie-from Georgia.

I've been on Sparks off/on since 2006. Lurking that first year. Then in 207 started using the resources here and lost 70 pounds! Then in 2008 life and other chaos moved back into my 'space' and I quit paying attention or making time for me (again) and nearly regained the weight lost.

I've always been a 'night owl' because that is about the only time to guaruntee 'me time' uninterrupted but that also meant it was easy to snack and indulge in way too many goodies after everyone else was in bed!

Evenings still are a challenge. Especially when the rest of the family gets the night-time nibblews at about 9 PM!

Things eaten then are usually highly processed and/or loaded with sugar, fats and salts..chips, cookies, ice cream, candies ....

My best offense is a good defense by keeping healthy crunchy sweet alternatives and COUNTING IT in my daily 'calorie budget' ....

I get in trouble going 'over budget' and just not paying attention.

Consistency is the one huge thing I need to constantly work on!

Hello...

I am Judy from Nevada.

I am a real estate agent, working in the Las Vegas/Henderson area.

I am also a part time "gambler" chasing casino promotions all over town. Mostly playing Video Poker, and Progressives.

I lose weight on Sparkpeople in 2007, but then developed foot and knee problems, and gained back most of the 50 lbs. I lost. I had a knee replacement Oct. 5, 2010 and I can walk now. But the other knee throws "fits" at times and I need crutches to get around.

Trying to lose the weight again so I don't need more surgery. I don't want to go thru THAT again!

We eat out almost every day using free food coupons, and comps. So eating is always a challenge. The Las Vegas Buffets are lengendary, and a minefield of goodies. I try to eat healthy, but at night the munchies attack. Night time eating is a major problem. When I could not walk to the fridge, I lost weight, LOL. Hoping to have a bit more self control in the future!

Going on a trip for 4th of July and temptations will be everywhere! Hope I can avoid the worst of them!

Judy from Henderson, NV (near Las Vegas) had a Total Right Knee Replacement 10/5/2010.
Left Knee Replacement 2/23/2016.
Now I hope knee surgeries are over!

Now I just have to keep diabetes from attacking me!

I gave this information on the chat line but will repeat it here. I am Teri from Cambridge Ontario Canada,
I have 2 daughters and 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter ranging from 6-16. I am 56 years old.
My body gets addicted to sugar very easily which is where I am at right now. Some days I get home late and eat around 8. I want to learn to time manage better so that I am not eating that late at night.
I love fruit and veggies and have no one sabotaging me but me. I have learned I have to keep bad foods out of my house in order not to over eat.
I am going to offer to be a co-leader with Chris and help her in the team. We have been sparkfriends for years and together we will make this team work for all of us.
I better go and get ready to pick the boys up at school. I babysit 2 boys they are 7 I drop them off in the morning and pick them up after school and then I have them for about 2-3 hours. I cook dinner for the one mother and son and sometimes I nibble and then I'm not hungry when I get home. The good thing is they are very healthy eaters.
Chris is absolutely right I have many friends that are downright skinny and they have to work at not gaining weight. When they say they have 5-10 lbs. to lose I used to say of course you do and chuckle but then it dawned on me if your clothes are tight and uncomfortable it doesn't matter how much you are over weight it is still weight that has to be lost. So whether you have 5 lbs. or 105 lbs. to lose it is still hard work and committment on your part.
I would like to see the whole team come up with ideas for healthier snacks and other things to do instead of nibbling at night. Together we will do this and be there to support and motivate each other. Teri

STAY POSITIVE AND SMILE. DON'T BE DISCOURAGED WHEN YOU HAVE A BAD DAY. THEY CAN ONLY GET BETTER.

Linda, here is some information about IMT therapy:

Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) For Gluten Sensitivity
In addition to dietary changes, people with gluten-related symptoms can look to Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) for help with shifting physical pain and loss of function. IMT practitioners are seeing evidence of what could potentially be called a gluten-sensitivity epidemic. Physical indicators of a problem digesting and processing gluten include, positive myofascial mapping. This is an IMT diagnostic procedure assessing the connective tissue at the ileocecal valve and cecum, the first part of the large intestine near the right hip.

Thanks, Linda, for posting. I did not eat gluten for almost a year. I did go back to it however. Now I am at least trying to eat much less wheat. I think it does help me. I don't have celiac disease. It must be trying to keep your family, including yourself, healthy. Food allergies are no fun. Dairy bothers me quite a bit. I love that stuff so much. I just had Greek yogurt. cheese is a real bugaboo for me. It is very hard for me to stop eating when I get started. On sparkpeople, I noticed a recipe for grilled cheese. No bread, nothing, just cheese! I guess I am not the only one who likes cheese!

The reason I tried no gluten was because of a sort of a physical therapist I tried. They preach no gluten for just about everyone. Since I am so obese, they said I certainly should not eat gluten. They talked about leaky gut syndrome.

The therapy they do is very, very gentle. They always touch two places to get energy going between those two body areas. A session lasts about an hour. I always felt better when I went. But I had to pay up front and wait for insurance reimbursement. Insurance was so slow that I'd lose track of what it was paying for. That is the reason I stopped going. I honestly did not know what it was costing me. IMT is the name of the place here in Connecticut. I went for one whole summer. It was hard to tell if I'd have to keep going forever. It was very subtle. I am not sure if it helped in the long run.

Hi. I'm Linda and live in North central Washington state near the Canadian border. 62, have dear husband of 33 years who is retired from truck driving to truck gardening and Farmer's Markets. i have done day care for 28 years and looking toward retiremnet either this fall or spring of 2012. Taking a two month vacation this summer to help make that decision. I have an adult daughter with celiac disease plus an anaphilactic reaction to airborne wheat so cannot cook wheat in our home - this has brought me to choose the gluten free lifesyle that was recommended for fibromialgia IBS years ago and my health has improved _

I still deal with some evening munching _ one thing that has really helped me is to finish off my accounting for this day right after supper and then anything that I eat after that is counted as MORNING SNACK for the following day. Since i have become responsible to record all foods _this tactic works for me.

If you ever need someone to talk to...I'm here! I promise I get what you're going through...and I might have some tricks to help you get through!

Is your name Cassie?

Pressure from people around me finally is not a problem for me. It took me many years to get over that. I used to think thin people were naturally thin. After years of observing others, I now know they (especially women) choose foods and potions very carefully. They do not have any special metabolism that keeps them at that weight. Most of them would gain weight just as easily as you and I do. They struggle with this daily. I would advise you to look on sparkpeople for more help in standing up for yourself. Once at school, I carried a salad to a staff table. A "friend" there got up and moved to another table! It was years ago and I am still mad at her. She said, if I was dieting, she would not sit near me and feel guilty! I really could have used her support. And I wasn't even dieting. I just wanted a salad for lunch! My Mom used to pressure me to eat. Once I refused a sandwich from her because I was not hungry. well, she started to cry! How's that for pressure! Please keep posting and people will be here to help. Your problem is very common and gets worse as you lose weight. People start saying, oh you don't need to lose any more weight. that must come from jealousy and they feel threatened/. As long as there are other people weighing more that they do, they can feel satisfied with themselves. Good luck! Chris emoticon

Hi Chris, it's really nice to know you. I'm Cassle, 19 years old (almost 20) and I have almost the same problem. Maintaining daily calories are something I need to do, but of course there are serious problems that makes me far from what I want. So, honestly, I eat much whenever I feel stress and I also eat much whenever I have something to celebrate about. This comes worse at the evening, because usually my family eats together at lunch and (especially) dinner.

When my family eats together, all people tends to order delicious foods from restaurants and that's what I can't resist. It's like, your favorite foods are on the table, what are you waiting for? So that's why I'm obese right now.

Basically, I don't know how to change this situation. If I eat too less, my mom will mad at me and she will feel worry that I lose appetite because of something like sickness or stress. If I order something healthy from restaurant, no one will agree because I could say my family is.. carnivores.

The only source of veggies I could find is the catering that arrives every morning and noon. But still, unhealthy (and delicious) foods from restaurants are very hard to resist!!

I an Chris from Connecticut, USA. I started this team so I could focus on my problem of eating in the evening. I have "tried everything" except of course actually reducing my daily calories. I lost a huge amount of weight twice in my life but (slowly) gained it back. Then, LIFE hit hard and since then I have not been able to lose weight. I am pretty healthy and do water aerobics 3 times a week. If I could stop Evening Eating, I could get my BMI down to something reasonable. My goal is to be healthy. I am now 64. I am married with one grown daughter. I am the sole caregiver for my husband after his stroke in 2006. I am a teacher. I am pretty desperate to lose weight and this is my summer vacation. I don't want to lead a team all by myself. The reason is I'd like the team to be around a long time and if I get overwhelmed--which happens-- I won't be able to keep this going properly. I am on sparkpeople EVERY DAY! I have been very active since 2008. So I am not going away. But I need support as much as anyone. I see teams with over 5 leaders. Eventually, I hope people will volunteer be leaders to keep YOUR team strong! Love you all! emoticon Chris
