We had the quietest holiday ever. We usually go to our neighbors, but since their kids are spread out and not coming this year, they went "home" to Chicago, and just came back today. So we used pre-cooked turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce topping and a bunch of pre-cooked vegetables that we always have.

We did a lot of cleaning, as we moved all that bulky medical stuff (including the reclining chair that I need) into the bedroom, so we had to rearrange both the living room and the bedroom. I'm exhausted, but our neighbors are coming for dinner tonight as they have nothing in the house!

I hope y'all have been enjoying the holiday weekend. We did not have the family gathering at our house; we went to our sons, this year. I did some baking & brought part of the meal. It's been a busy week. I now feel like I'm coming down with something, but, hoping it's just allergies or something. I don't usually get sick. Too sassy to get sick. emoticon

We didn't join the crowd of shoppers, this weekend. Nope. Have enjoyed the time at home to re-coop.

Got a few new contraptions. One is a vest that I sleep in now, which is a compression vest.

The other is a bulky control connected to tubes which when the "shorts" and "vest" are put on, will compress my body from the chest are to the arms in gentle rotation.I have to sit and "veg out" for a full hour. (The machine automatically turns itself off after the hour is up.)

Finally, the last current Holiday is over. It was very joyous, with men Dancing with the Torah, and women with the children. Even to the extent that they brought a blanket out and each kid had a chance to be thrown up in the air in it.

It was a couple of long, days, but happy ones. The Sukkah comes down, and we're back to being inside, where it can be just as cold, (once the AC is set, it doesn't get changed until Shabbat is over). But the women all bring either sweaters or shawl, and the men have their tallis (a special garment that looks like an oversized shawl be an extra layer.)

This all may sound like strange customs, but for the religious, it's their normal way of life. We're not "that way", but one of my 3 daughters is, so we "know the rules" but don't follow most of what we consider to be extreme!

OK, back to normalcy. Yesterday was a medical day, with three appointments which had to be delayed because of tall the holidays. All seems to be OK, which is the best news yet.

There's a lot of truth, right there. Several ppl have to take medications "with food", as a first for instance.

My week has been about being intimidated by one of those fancy dancy pressure cookers; finally making something; trying to figure out what kind of yogurt to make in it and finding the right recipe; deciding if that's worth the effort; since many recipes recommend full fat expensive milk and dessert quality sweeteners? Wondering why that is considered worth it. I over-think things too much. I will get this figured out.

Next Holiday starts tonight. Dinner has to be eaten early, as my husband has to go to the Reform Temple tonight and tomorrow to sing with the choir. I stay home and watch (on my 70 inch television) the Service as it streams from the Stephen Wise Synagogue in NYC, which is where one of my daughter's family I bought the books to follow along.with them. 0It's supposed to be a fast day, but we both heave to take certain medications that must be taken with food, so we are "exempted" from that rule. (I think at this point our age alone should qualify us for that)

My husband always looks at the internet (or his phone) before starting anything he hasn't done before. But once he's done it, it's engraved in his memory! On the other hand, if I were cooking (as I did until I re-entered the work force when my youngest was 4) I would need a written recipe, and literally check off each step from gathering the ingredients to how to actually cook it! emoticon

Somedays are better than others. Couldn't sleep last night, but, today was better & with a welcome phone call.

Tried a new recipe last night that didn't have the oven temp listed. Had all ingredients ready & noticed the missing info. Found a similar recipe online & made a guess at the oven temp. I swear, everything is online, pretty much.

Mondaylins -

Thanks for thinking of me. I've just heard that there may bean injection that is long lasting that might work for this. And I've got a note to my doctor about that and the possibility of doubling the medication dose again.

Medication seems to have helped my back. But now we're trying to cut back on the medication to just 1 a day. If the pain comes back, we'll have to dig into it in detail.

1 bad haircut + 1 fixer haircut = too much stressing over HAIR. I have salt & pepper hair with a couple white blotches in the back of my head. Can't believe I'm about to use a grey hair dye. Also picked up some purple styling gel, for fun.

DH has had many kidney stones, unfortunately. So far, they've all passed on their own. Some with horrible pain, some less painful. Only the worst ones were ER or DR visits. He never had to deal with stents. I have a friend who ended up having a stent get infected. emoticon Wishing for you both to feel better soon.

Glad you're doing better. I had the same reaction after they retrieved my stent, also. It was many years ago, in NY

I'm much better too, after I couldn't stand up or walk without pain, but the doctor said take tramadol. I was reviewing past record, and I may start taking the Mobic twice a week, Evidently, that worked last time. So I'm taking it real easy for now. I won't even try swimming.

Thanks, I think I'm finally getting back to normal, I went Mon to get the Stent taken out & I thought I would feel like getting back to myself, boy was I wrong, I had the worst day, I've been getting indigestion since last Sat. and then my stomach was in turmoil, so I stayed on the couch most of the day Mon, went to work Tues morning and I did feel a lot better, Today I'm feeling a little better, but I'm not going to over do it today either. I don't think I've ever heard of Thunderbird as an mail source, but whatever works for you. I'm not computer savvy, so when it screws up I'm lost. Have a great week

Congratulations on the "stone blasting".

My computer had a glitch and I ended up switching from Outlook to Thunderbird as a mail client, so I may not be current of some of these boards. I'm still learning it, and there is a slight curve to it. Fortunately, my husband has been using it for years, so he did the set-up and is getting me up to speed.

My husband's go-to is usually sriracha sauce. He even adds it to ketchup at breakfast with his omelets. Fortunately (?) I seem to have lost my strong sense of small and taste buds this past year. Now he ads garlic and other spices I never could stand, but in small quantities, and I seem to tolerate them. We had leftovers from my daughter's 5 spice chicken the other day, and it was delicious. (Whenever she's here after the first night she pushes my husband out of the kitchen to give him a break. But then again, they usually stay at a hotel for a night leaving us to "babysit" the 14 and 11 year old boys. And half the time we get to the hotel the day before and pay for it!)

Oh my, those words you just said are exactly what my hubby would say! He does not do spicy and def never anything with pepper. When I've made tacos, everything is bland (ground beef just cooked up with onion & no spice or salt). Theres always salsa for those of us who want spicy.

Can't help with that one. I admit that cookies aren't the most nutritious. We have canned foods & bread. Was just trying to come up with something that doesn't need refrigeration.

OK, how do you make hurricane cookies without carbs???

Ever see the commercial where the pregnant woman yells at her husband "Don't mess with my discount? " That's the way I am with carbs other than in fruit and vegetables. Cauliflower substitute can go just so far!

What are "hurricane cookies"?

You make them when you're preparing for a possible power outage, baking up a recipe where you don't have all the ingredients asked for. Don't have the "right" flavored chips? No problem. Who cares when you're hungry. Recipe doesn't call for nuts? We have a few extra, let's toss em in. Nuts are nutritious. When we're hungry, we won't care what the recipe was 'supposed' to have in it.

Janice1: Good luck with the re-schedule. It usually works out well because they sympathize with your having to go through that anxiety all that time. Hope at least the pain level has gone down some.

I had a periodontist appointment that was re-scheduled 4 times before finally going yesterday. But I'm going to wait until after the pool season is over to have it done Mid to late September. Wouldn't want to waste a couple of pool days because of it.

Mondaylins: We keep the pool at 89 so that it's almost always warmer that the temperature (in normal years, which this definitely wasn't). I figure as long as the water is warmer thanthe air, it's still "swimmable".

I was scheduled for last Thurs to have the stone removed and a Nurse from the Hospital called me Wed. night to say there was an emergency at the Hosp. so I would have to go to another Hosp. or re-schedule, so I opted to re-schedule, The Dr's nurse called me Thurs morning and said the OR got flooded during the storm Wed night so now I have an appt. for Sept 5th, and maybe a chance to still pass it on my own.

Since the last time I was on this forum, my granddaughter and family (husband and 6 year old twins boys) came for a week. They're from Israel, but spent 2 weeks in Detroit with his family first. And one of her brothers now lives in Florida, so he came for the weekend to see them too. It's really complicated when they come because we are no longer kosher, but still have all the pots, pans, dishes silverware, etc. necessary to make the changes. We finally have the kitchen back to normal.

The big potato-chili-salad supper is over with, so I now have some free time. Have gone swimming the last couple days in a pool that feels like bathwater. Some don't like it that warm, but, I think it's wonderful. Hope to see DS & DIL this week.

I've added a recipe for refried beans in the Instant Pot thread. My friend (who owns one) tells me that one does not need to soak the beans (forevah!) when fixing in the new pots. emoticon

My NYC daughter just came in for a couple of days on her way to Ocracoke on the coast via Brevard on the complete opposite end of NC. She just went through an extremely hot heat spell, with temps reachin0 g the 90's, but her co-op had just pulled out the AC to be replaced, and her apartment (about 1000 sq. feet) RANGED FROM THE HIGH 80'S THROUGH THE MID 90'S. Timing is everything.

Temp here today according to the car's gauge was 99 about 3 PM, but we had a heavy downpour and things cooled off. The pool had been u to the 90's, but cooled back down to 88 which is where the heater is set.

I'm in FL, so no AC was a very bad thing. YAY they finally fixed our AC duct-work yesterday!! It's as tho the storm cloud above my head has lifted. Altho, it's the rainy season and we have LOTS of (for real) storm clouds. It poured cats & dogs last night. My goodness, we get some doozies. Like most dogs, mine is afraid of loud thunder. I've discovered that putting a small blankie over her is comfort during the storm. She settles right down with me when I do that.

JANICE: I'm sorry you're still having to go for the DR appts. I hope the solution is very soon.

We're still having air duct problem at our house. Each day is about trying to keep comfortable until the problem can be solved. Unfortunately, solution depends on the weather & so is not a quick fix. Complicated & stressful. Trying to keep our sanity.

I like to knit, but only in the winter when I have some free time, I did not pass the stone so now I go back to the Urologist on Mon to see what's next, I'm getting tired of going to Dr.s appts.

FIL has had wonderful luck with wearing compression socks. They're worth the cost. Best of luck with the compression sleeve, Charna.

Sewing project is moving forward. I've remembered a purple satin shirt I'd found at a thrift store. I liked it but it's way out of style. (Not usually an issue with me, but, it had weird sleeves & collar.) I've decided to make it into an apron (have done that with another shirt, before.) I think it will be a special one to make for our Queen. This is a red hat project (thus explaining the red & purple colors.)

Janice, glad to see you're up and around.
MONDAYLINS, I've always wanted to learn that, but I'm past the age of looking for new things to do.
Too busy knitting and swimming. only did 75 minutes today. Yesterday was the killer, 2 hours. And we always swim without stopping. Sometimes, if we didn't swim that much in the morning, we'll try to get more done in the afternoon, but not today. We're too tired. I had my PT (to hopefully stem the lymphadema that erupted recently. It's already gone down a little, and I'm hoping the new compression sleeve will help more. Instead of being just one size stretchable, it's got velcro so it's adjustable as it grows or shrinks! Can't wait to have to wear that thing!

Good Morning, I've been busy with trying to pass a Kidney stone, I go Tues for a CT scan to see if I still have it or not, I think I passed it but will see. Just my normal busy work schedule also, MONDAYLINS, that must have been horrible to see someone drop in front of you, but glad you DIL was with you to help, right place at the right time. Have a great week all and I'll drop in again soon

Have had a really rough week. It started out great, with a visit from DIL. While she was here, we were out for a stroll which ended with me calling emergency and DIL doing CPR on someone. Sooooo glad she was with us as she knew what to do, is a trained emt. Disaster didn't end there. We live in the south and our AC is currently not working. I won't go into details, but, it's not an easy fix. Will be a few days.

Managed to keep the house comfortable...sort of, yesterday. I kept myself occupied with a sewing project. I had a big chunk of fabric and need to make as many red aprons as possible. I cut out 7. Not too bad, considering it was random fabric I found at a garage sale last year. At the bottom of a small box I'd paid only $2 for, there was this midweight red fabric. I don't usually have such good luck. So, am thrilled. Instead of making pockets in the aprons, I will sew on appliques.

Janice, you haven't been around for a while. Hope everything is OK.

We were at Costco again. My husband says if we go every day does he get a paycheck?

We've both lost so much weight that we really need all new wardrobes. We're giving all our old clothes to charities, and literally starting from scratch.

Sorry I've been MIA. Was busy visiting family.

Janice, I hope you're feeling better and the stone has passed.

In the meantime, I've got some serious meal planning to do. Fridge is nearly empty and I've been busy with everything else to do around here.

Hope you can pass it naturally. It's a lot less painful than having it removed by doctors.

thank you for the Well Wishes, I still haven't passed it yet, but I'm not in any pain so the Dr. is giving me another 2 weeks to pass it on my own, we shall see what happens, but thank you again and have a great weekend

Hoping for good news with your Ultrasound, Janice. DH has had a few kidney stone experiences. Thankfully, never needed surgery; but, got so he could recognize when one was about to pass and one must've already passed... There's some guesswork to it, naturally. Hope you are feeling much better.

Praying, Janice, that you pass the stone very soon (if you haven't already.)
I'm about to be spending much time with my own adult children, very soon. It's always a lot of work involved, but, good visits as well.

The medicine should help.
Put my (3) daughter on a plane back to Israel today after a full week's visit, but in a few weeks one of my (2) daughters will be here within a month, and then the (3) daughter's daughter will be here for a week with her 6 year old twin boys. Don't really know if I have time to be sad over one leaving or look forward to the others coming. I'm looking on the positive side!

Thanks Vicki, the Urologist gave me a script for Flomax to help pass the stone, the pain isn't too bad in my stomach, but now I have a pain in my butt & hip, I think from the stone, I just told my Honey, I'll be the one that waits til right before the surgery to pass it.....LOL . Have a great week

Hope you can pass it yourself. Maybe there's some medicine that could help it along. But if you have to have surgery, my thoughts and prayers are with you.I've had so many surgeries in my 75 years that my usual answer when they ask for previous operations is "If you don't need it, I don't have it!." Good luck!

Bad flooding (and hail) in Greensboro yesterday, but nice day until the afternoon, when it's going to JUST be flooding! Hopefully, we'll be able to get our swim in before it starts. We are enjoying two more days with our daughter before she goes back to Israel and the 4 children (out of 8) that are still home. Ages 15-11. (the others are aged 27- 17). This was her "vacation" while her husband and the 27 year old (mother of 6 year old twin boys) take care of the younger kids. They live in the same city but a different division. Close enough for her them to get to her house on their own.) - ( If you subscribe to the "How is Your Day Today" yes, I copied and pasted it!)

It's been a stressful few days. I don't like difficult conversations, but, sometimes they're necessary. Could use some extra prayers and good thoughts, if you have any to spare.

I'm not into fireworks, but you could hear them from our house. (It was literally right in front of us. The neighbor across the street gets them every year. Twice, actually also on New Year's Eve!
