Sylvia,
welcome. I'm in about the same boat as you, except my diabetes diagnosis was 13 years ago. I started Keto 6 years ago, and wish it had been sooner.

Sylvia... I absolutely love how you are taking control of your health and not just letting the "experts" dictate what you should do. I did the math that you gave on the protein and I see that I am, according to the results, too high with that. I think I will tweak that macro next to see if I can start losing again. Thank you.

By the way, I've been at this for only two weeks, the weight loss has been sweet, and best yet, my numbers have gone way down!

Hi! My name is Sylvia, I'm a retiree living in Minnesota, and I've been both on Sparkpeople and OFF Sparkpeople for a very long time. What brought me back? A recent diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes.

Now, I'd have to be nuts to follow the ADA dietary guidelines. If I'm insulin resistant, I'm not going to consume all those carbs, thank you very much, especially as I've grown rather fond of my toes over the years and prefer to keep them. Instead, I researched my brains out and found Dr. Richard Bernstein's Diabetic Diet, which is, for all intents and purposes... well, THIS. I limit my carbs to 20 grams a day, and my ideal macros are 5% carbs, 15% protein, and 80% fats.

We diabetics have to pay a little extra attention to the proteins too, because too much can lead to glucogenesis, or the conversion to sugar. Now, since I can't just waltz into a joint brand new without bearing a gift, here's mine to you:

If you're in the same boat as I am and want to calculate your maximum protein intake, take your goal weight, and divide it by 2.2. That'll give you your goal weight in kilograms. Now multiply that by 0.8, and that'll give you the number of protein grams you shouldn't exceed. You're welcome.

Looking forward to getting to know you!

Sylvia
