Thank you Holly, what a lifesaver you are. I am starting now to stop all sweets, yes I feel it is an addiction.

I will be asking for recipes.

Hi Barbara and WELCOME!!! I'm Holly --I'm also 61!

theres an easy way to figure everything, this is for Daily:

under 20 g TOTAL carbs (not net)
50-60 g protein
the rest from fat but AT LEAST 120 g a day.
dont try to cut calories!! add butter or coconut oil or olive oil to everything to get your cals and fats up.

as for sweet...its best if you can just stop. dont have any. its an addiction, and having tastes or making keto sweets is not going to help you break it. I do think you will find that after a week of nothing sweet, you wont be wanting them anymore.
If you MUST...message me and i can give you some recipes. but its best if you can hold off till after you get all the sugar and carbs out of your system,

if in the first few weeks you get headaches or the grumpies or are feeling lousy. drink some salty chicken broth, some salt water, or powerade zero. i know the powerade zero will taste sweet, and i just told you not to do sweet,,,but it will help if you cant do the chicken broth or the salt water.

Please ask any questions, we are happy to help!!!

So glad to have you with us!

Hi Keto team,
My name is Barbara I 61 yrs old, I am married, am diabetic and my A1 C is the highest its ever been 10.5. When I turned 50 I lost 60 pounds and somehow they found me again. I would like to start keto with your support and encouragement. I told myself that I will do it this time but again the sweets tempt me and I give in. Any tips you may have to deal with the sweet cravings and the best way to follow the keto diet would be greatly appreciated. 40 pounds is my long term goal.
From the posts I see that you are a very caring supportive group.

Hi! I'm new here but have been doing Keto for about 3 months. I have lost 30 pounds...hubby has lost 70. We have both been taken off of our diabetic meds. We are both feeling great! I'm looking forward to learning more from this group. Thanks!

Not as impactful as carbs are on Ketosis, taking you out of ketosis for a while as your body can store about a 3 day supply of carbs in glycogen, and that is not so for alcohol.

However it is still calories. You get back into ketosis quicker, but it really stops fat burning.

Hi and WELCOME!!

yes alcohol is processed differently..your body uses it first as it sees it as poison. so goes before anything else. Many people find that alcohol stalls them.

I personally do not test. I know that if I stay below 20 total carbs a day i'm in ketosis. That said i do have a breath meter that i use every so often..like every month or so..and its always dead on with my bloodwork from my doc.

a blood meter is going to be the absolute most accurate.

The strips are fine in the beginning, then you will start to see them showing less ketones..this is a good thing it means you are deeper into ketosis..when you are burning ketones you arent spilling them into your urine. Many people freak out and think it means they arent in ketosis, and the only way to be sure is to use the blood meter or the breath meter. I wouldnt waste my money on the urine strips.

a good blood meter, if you chose to get one, is keto mojo. too expensive for me, but great ratings and results.

Hi keto Friends! I'm New to this team so I'm excited to have some support from sparkies! I've been trying keto for 43 days now. I keep on discovering more science behind this. For example i was enjoying vodka with plain soda, no carbs right? Well my weight loss came to a halt. I looked up why this was, turns out that alcohol is processed differently. It is used for energy and so ketosis is stopped.Oh well.
I do have a question. I'm confused about testing for ketosis. There are three ways and they all have their positives and negatives. Urine strips, blood testers, and breath analysis.Which one do you use and why?

Hi Kathy and welcome!!!
unfortunately that happens all too often..but you have the added plus of knowing it works, having been so successful!!
i have found most everything has a fairly good substitute. we are just so based in "food is fun" that we feel we are missing something if we dont have all the food we remember with nostalgia and our tastebuds.
it took me doing some hard psychological work to go from "food is delicious, fun, memorable, part of the party" to "food is fuel" period. and i dont always win,,,but i'm 99% there!!
we are here to help...i have tons of recipes, and keep up with new findings. so glad to have you with us!!

Good morning team. My name is Kathy, I am 56 years old and live in Florida. I am married 31 years with one son. I have just started this AGAIN. Lost weight on Keto before then went on summer vacation and ruined all the progress I made. I am a diabetic and when I was on the Keto my blood sugar numbers plummeted. went from an A1C 12 to a 6.5. So I know this works but I just need the motivation to keep it going. Here's to going forward not backwards.

Hello! I am a single (but dating) 48 year old female that lives in Northern Alberta Canada. I had sleeve surgery in 2015. My highest weight was 270 my lowest was 169. Currently at 186. I am just starting on this keto journey. So far so good but only a few days in. I hope to find support here from fellow Keto people and hopefully get at my 160 goal weight. If I can I might go lower and then get surgery if I need it. Right now the only part of me that I hate is my arms but they are much smaller than what they were at 270 pounds!!! :)

Take care!

Mona

I work 4-5 days a week as a Caregiver in Assisted Living

Love hiking, yoga and country line dancing

I've seen over the last few years what a toll poor diet and lifestyle does to your health as you age. I have a family history of Diabetes on both side and celiac disease on my maternal side. I have struggled with my weight most of my life, I have adapted my eating habits towards more clean eating / low sugar but have struggled with carbs and never feeling satiated within my caloric range. I have seen the transformation that the Keto Lifestyle has had one one of my best friends, who is ten years my senior, not only her weight but entire energy level. As I am swiftly approaching my 40's I have decided that this is the next direction that I want my health to go in.

Hello everyone,

My name is Kris. I have been fighting my weight all my life and tried many diets. About 9 months I tried a medically supervised PSMF diet which worked great. I lost 50lbs on it but unfortunately things went off track about 4 months ago and I gained 40 of it back. I struggle as an emotional eater and have been looking at healthier ways to manage my feelings and working on changing my relationship with food. I am working on getting back on track and been doing some research and discovered that I may not need to go back to doctors office to do a keto diet. I'm ready for change and gearing up to be back on track by Monday. I am looking forward to learning and also getting some additional support in my journey. I look forward to chatting and supporting each other!

Hi Diane and WELCOME!!! I'm of the dont count crowd, based on research.I eat a minimum of 1800 a day, usually far more, and am down 132 pounds. Just please dont cut too far...if you starve yourself yes you will lose fast then you will stall. you need to stoke your metabolism not make it slow down!! your numbers are reasonable...

Hello everyone. My name is Diane. I'm not new to Spark People, but I am new to Keto. Today is my third day. I'm glad I found this Spark Team. It looks really supportive and informativie. One thing I'm not sure about is counting calories. I've read some articles that say you should count and other say you don't need to. I ask because I generally eat between 1400 - 1700 a day to lose 2 pounds a week. My calories seem a little higher eating on the Keto plan (especially today because I ate some macadamia nuts :))

Hello everyone! I'm getting prepared to start my Keto journey. I can't wait to start but need to buy some staples and get ready to meal prep. Almost there. I'm dying for a good life change and this just seems to be it. I'm excited, and scared. It's hard to change. But it's all change I've been wanting to do for a while now. So, I'm gearing up by reading, reading, reading, and printing a ton! LOL. I can't wait to learn from you all!

My Keto life is pretty simple. Here is a list of low carb things.... basically if its fraction of weight of carbs is low enough (6% or less) then I eat it:
www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes
sa
geboard_thread.asp?board=0x58536x666R>79431x1xfirst

If things get close to 6% I eat less of it. Like carrots at 7%, I taste them, but eat very small quantities (if any) of them.

Any meat, no breaded coatings on them, just dry spices. I also marinate my steaks in mustard (with a little bit of soy sauce mixed in it).

I'm here pretty often.

Hi, my name is Dee and I've been on SP for many years. I've used the Start and My trackers for doing many things, but I've been gone from here for at least 5 years. Can you tell me if there are now menus that are Keto and if so, how do I change my information to put Keto on there?

So far, I've done everything on the DietDoctor.com site but it's not as user friendly as SP so I'm really hoping I can switch over to here for my full needs. Please let me know?

Hi Fluffy yes i'm aware but havent had any problems. that happened well over a month ago and i believe its been fixed. not everyone was effected..i was one that wasnt..many were..but a quick password change and it seems to be all fine.
The spark one is fine, but it doesnt hold your nutrition info well. It changes macros etc thats why i switched. if it works for you excellent!!

Hi and welcome!! you are right about age..i turned 60 a week ago and lost 132 over 8 months last year doing keto, zero IF or fasting. its like magic!
if you get the flu..drink chicken broth, powerade zero, or if you can stand it, pickle juice. should help..or a spoonful of salt in a big glass of water helps, too...

i use my fitness pal for tracking..its free..use the verified entries if you do use it. you can set it with your macros. I do total carbs not net, but its your choice. i stay under 20 a day.

You can do this!! once you get the basics down it gets way easier...

we are here for you if you need help or support!

Howdy Y'all! How is everyone? I've been toying with the idea of Keto for a while now and finally decided to give it a try. The main reason is, while I've tried "low carb" before, I never gave really was aware of Keto enough to give it a try. When I finally did hear of keto, I thought I had already tried "low carb" (as if they were the same thing, however my low carb diet tended towards more protein and some veggies, but not really focused on fat (including or excluding).

My first attempt came after a wonderful SP friend said he and his wife (who are grandparent age--thus a demographic which generally has a tougher time shredding pounds) lost a significant amount of weight over the past year or so using keto. Got so excited about the idea, their results, etc. that I dove in the deep end without even hardly holding my breath. The result: intimidate keto flu in a HUGE way! End of experiment with keto for quite a while.

Then, slowly, over time, I saw other Sparkers trying it. Before long they were all showing weight loss results too--and all in the over 50 crowd (age was not any excuse--too many people think if you are over x age you are going to be overweight). Before long I found Dr. Berg on YouTube. I'd already came across Dr. Fung's Intermittent Fasting info on YouTube and had given it a try. I lost about 10 lbs and was able to keep it off for many months but there wasn't any further progress no matter how much I exercised or did IF. Now I'm trying Dr. Berg's Keto with IF.

Today was my first day. I'm not certain if SP nutrition tracker is accurate or not but I ate cabbage in an attempt to get that potassium I'm needing, cooked in bone broth and butter, along with some beef, and was shocked to see my nutrition tracker showing me 49 carbs for cabbage (21 fiber, net 31--yes the math doesn't add up, thus my assumption it isn't working properly)

Has anyone else noted this? Does the SP net carbs work? I'm thinking I'll likely need to do some more meal planning (I'm aiming currently at trending towards fasting 20 hrs, eating 4, starting keto, daily ACV+lemon, eating up my carby old stuff, etc.). I'd appreciate input if anyone has any suggestions/wisdom to share. Later, I'm eating several cups of salad with a bit of shredded jicama, radishes, carrots, celery and a home-grilled beef burger patty with cheese.

Hope everyone is doing fabulous! Here in Texas it is sunshine and awesome (not too hot, not too cool) and a beautiful day for a walk--so I am off to get a walk outdoors and make some fabulous vitamin D!
