Welcome! Our group is pretty tolerant with a wide range rather than an exclusive range of plant focused diets.

Iíve had a two year backslide from vegetarianism.
I started in my veg journey in 1980. I was 12, in north Texas, no internet and a selection of two vegetarian cookbooks in the local library. With two more from interlibrary loan (they only tapped one district. Iím not sure why, aside from mailing costs.)

The only vegetarian restaurant I was aware of was Govindaís, in Dallas.
I identified as lacto vegetarian, because I didnít care if there was some dairy in a dish.
Iím mildly allergic to the proteins in cowís milk, so I didnít have a lot. I used goat milk some.

In the two years of not being plant based, Iíve gained back 20 pounds. That has to go.

Iím aiming for something that looks 80 percent nutritarian, with intermittent fasting at a 14 hour fast window. Basically either a late breakfast, or early dinner.

Wake up every day knowing you make the decision to begin your journey anew.

This choice in this moment defines now.

Hello all emoticon

I just joined your wonderful team. I have been only eating meat usually once a week for about a year now, and it finally occurred to me that there is a name for that, so I started looking for a like-minded Spark team.

My name is Renee and I live in Virginia with my sweet husband and my rescue cat. I am currently volunteering at a hospice twice a week while looking for a full-time job to get off disability.

I have spent about five hours in the last two days on Spark Recipes just to expand my repertoire. My favorite foods are tofu, peanut butter, chickpeas, black beans, corn, lentils, and most veggies, so I have been getting new ideas. I want to start food prepping on Sundays when I am working, so other people can be really jealous of my lunch boxes!

I am active on Spark every day, so I will be an active team member. Looking forward to getting to know y'all! emoticon

I'm Aneisa. My husband recently suggested we eat a mostly plant based diet. I was extremely surprised since he loved meat much more than I did. I would like to learn how to cook healthy vegetarian meals (especially in my crockpot) and make this lifestyle change something that we can stick to.

Wonderful Betty! Wish I had started earlier. What I have done is sporadically eaten this way and that and let my husband influence me towards junk. He loves hamburgers at a fast food place. No more! He can do what he wants but if he eats at home it will be healthy. He agreed to have meatless meals several nights a week. He still works, so I make sure he has a healthy meal when he gets home. I will just give him a piece of chicken or a small steak for his meat. I think he might actually switch over with me eventually. He has already stopped the fries with the hamburgers!

Welcome! I never believed in the low carb craze. I am 86 year old vegetarian and have been eating carbs for over 55 years. I am in fairly good health with low blood pressure and weight for my height. I get Forks over Knives on the Website. There are some very good ideas. Also ,check out McDougall recipes. I have followed Neal Bernard for a long time. Good luck and hang in there.

New here. I have been on Sparkpeople for 10 years! I have tried it all and have been vegan in the past. Coming back to it now. I believe it is the healthiest. I will do it the correct way, this time. Whole and organic, no white flour, no sugar. Next on my reading list is Forks Over Knives.
All the doctors advocate a low carb diet these days, I say that it is not for everyone. All my doctors are pushing the Ideal Protein. Each person is unique, although we all need good nutrition.
I am in my 60's with a husband who still works and two cats. I walk or use my treadmill or rebounder. I do painting, beading, crafts, drawing. Retired from being Community Relations for an elected official.
It is beautiful here in the hill country of Texas where we just had the bomber. He lived about 4 miles from my home.
Now that is over, the bluebonnets are out and we plan to take a drive on Saturday for viewing.

Hi, I'm Celia, I'm 62 on the 18th and I live in Colchester in the UK.

I have recently decided to give up meat and go Pescatarian for health reasons. I was vegetarian for most of my 20s but was a bit of a purist at the time as I wouldn't eat meat analogues, something I enjoy now as a part of a varied diet.

I'm also wheat and lactose intolerant but that's not much of a problem as I'm used to reading ingredients on packets and changing recipes to suit.

I'm currently researching and making over recipes and should be completely meat free by the end of march.

Hi! My name is Gail. I am 55 years old and have spent my life caring for other people. Now I need to take care of myself! I am trying to eat whole food plant based foods. I have a new air fryer and instant pot. I already love them! I still have cravings for meat and cheese but I am working on it every day. The hardest thing for me is that my family still eats the SAD diet, usually my food is their "sides". Looking forward to some support and recipes!

Hi, I'm Sue. I've been following mostly vegan diet (still eat egg whites) for about a month with my husband.

So many good reasons to do this. And I feel much better. I have a new collection of ebook vegan cookbooks, and I'm having fun trying new recipes.

Hi, I am 86 year old vegetarian. Been there for over 50 years. I belong to several other Spark Teams. I am interested in veggie recipes that are fast and easy and cheap. I don't need to lose weight just want to stay healthy. I see some of the members from other teams that I belong to. Looking forward to check things out.

Nutritarians eat vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds for the most part, adding whole grains as well, but limiting them somewhat if you have weight to lose. It's nutrient foods only, so we wouldn't be eating pasta and bread, unless they were made with high nutrient foods. I also don't eat wheat, but I believe some nutritarians do. It is Dr. Fuhrman's plan for longevity.

One of my favorite websites for nutritarian recipes is helynskitchen.com. I made a recipe there yesterday that was very tasty. It was Mushroom Brown Rice Risotto: https://helynskitchen.com/2014/03/mushroom
-brown-rice-risotto.html
I recommend it. :)

Love,

Helen

I am not sure what a nurtitarian is, looking that up right away! I like to know what eating plan Team members are referring to as their 'plan'.
I need to use up some dry beans I have, so I am really looking forward to your rice and bean recipes! I know they can be really tasty, but I need some help there.

I've been away from spark for a long while, so it's like I'm new again! My husband and I try to follow a nutritarian diet, while our 5 kids pretty much insist on the standard american diet, so it makes it hard to keep on track when there are other yummy looking things around. When I stick to being a nutritarian, the difference in how I feel is tremendous.

As for eating well on a budget, rice and beans are as inexpensive as you can get and they are nutritious and can be delicious. I'll post my recipe for beans in the recipe section. Having grown up in Brazil, I do love my rice and beans.

Love,

Helen

Welcome ON_A_DIET! I am a pasta lover myself, and here are some tricks I use: nutritional yeast is an acceptable replacement for cheese (1-2 Tablespoons) or keep your cheese amount small, no more than 1/4 to 1/3 a cup. Use a whole grain or whole wheat pasta or protein enriched pasta, such a Barilla protein plus (available at Walmart, where I do most of my shopping) and then I can splurge on vegan meatballs. For one person, I usually have I think at least 4 servings of Gardein vegan meatballs per pkg. (also at Walmart). You can add vegetables to your sauce or stir-fry or roast them and add to your pasta before adding the sauce.

A big tool for me is my spaghetti stick. I kept breaking plastic ones, but I splurged and bought a metal one on Amazon. They also sell bamboo ones for less, that are actually geared to ramen noodles etc. put work with spagehtti. The amount of pasta is about the size of dime or nickel for one female person, I forgot which. Instant portion control!

As far as crockpot recipes, I have posted some under the RECIPE FORUM...COME SHARE message board and there are cookbooks for vegetarian/vegan crockpot recipes. I have one called "Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker" by Robin Robertson, don't know if it's still available online. I have had it now for quite awhile and plan on using it more, hopefully sometime this year. There are vegetarian/vegan crockpot recipes online as well, I have a Pinterest board collection of them called Vegetarian Crockpot/Slow Cooker under my real name, Allison L. Ashby, so look on Pinterest. Remember to use my middle initial. Scroll down in the RECIPE FORUM...COME SHARE and you will find one that instructs on make ahead freezer packs for vegan crockpot meals. Make ahead, freeze, then pop contents in crock pot in the morning or when directed and go about your day. Then have a hot vegan dinner later.

As far as the money thing goes, I hear you completely since I live on my Disabilities income. I go to an 7th Day Adventist food pantry and get some great wonderful vegetables from them. But it makes me a flexitarian as well. I seldom buy real meat however, my flexing usually involves egg white-cheese omelettes and microwave meals.

Hello! I am ON_A_DIET. Nice to meet you!

I am here to attempt to become a flexitarian. Any suggestions on how to do this when I cook for the 3 of us (I have 2 roommates) and our grocery budget is very low. We can only afford some minimal veggies and fruit. How can I stretch the groceries on a flexitarian diet?

One roommate is on the Prism diet. The other roommate is so picky I sometimes want to pull my hair out. Myself? A pasta kinda gal.

There is one thing about myself, maybe this will be a benefit, I rely on my crockpot tremendously. I am a work at home freelancer with little time to slave over a stove. Do you have any crockpot suggestions?

Well, I know this is a tall order. But I know I cannot go wrong if SUNNYCALIGIRL is here!

Thanks a bunch.

Sincerely,
ON_A_DIET

Hello, my name is Amy. My hubby and I just decided yesterday after watching a very powerful documentary on how bad the American diet is for our health, we are going vegan!!! I just wish we made the decision prior to going grocery shopping. I want to feel better and I know this is an important part of getting there. Information is what we need so we can make the right educational choices.

Thank you for your response; I really appreciate it. Our grain bowls always have added vegetables (du jour) and occasionally a poached egg or some nuts. Sometimes some avocado.

I plan to do more reading and more trial and error.

I very much appreciate the time you have spent in giving my excellent ideas and theories.

Welcome, TOI-TOI-TOI!

I would imagine you belong to some of the diabetic teams, and that would be a good source for your own needs as they are differing from those of your husband. As far as men and women, regardless of any medical needs, processing food differently, I would speculate that as they are human, the digestive mechanism would be largely identical BUT due to gender differences, that just the application of nutrition would differ slightly, based on hormones, distribution of fat etc. People are all different. I meant to ask, do you add things to your grain bowl, such as vegetables or fruit or is it just grains, and if so is that because your husband has some specific health related dietary restrictions? I know that you can find varied vegan/vegetarian recipes here. We do have some Flexitarian team members, including some who are more versed on what a Flexitarian diet incorporates, it does have some specific guidelines, I saw that after some prelimiary research on line, but I have been too busy to get back to it just yet.

I do know, having read this in an article here at SP, that men have less fat on their bodies to begin with than a woman, so typically a man will lose weight faster than a woman, usually. I guess what that means is that an overweight couple wherein they both are on the same diet and exercise in generally the same way, the man may lose weight faster. I am single and could not verify that from my own experience.

I am here to get some eating inspiration. My husband is a dedicated vegetarian. I typically cook grain bowls, baked potatoes, beans and rice, and other dishes. My grains are as rustic and unrefined as I can get. I use ancient grains, sprouted grains, crunchy organic stuff.

My problem? I am a diabetic type 2 and was diagnosed in 1999. I avoid sweets and processed foods. Yet when I have a very unrefined meal with my husband: say a grain bowl with low-carb vegetables---I get post-prandial cravings. I make bowls of mixed grains sometimes or sometimes I have one as the main course: spelt, farro, buckwheat, brown rice, kamut, whole oat groats, etc.

So in this past few days I have cooked some meat for myself--pork, chicken, and a bit of beet. These are SMALL servings. I have them with vegetables and I have managed not to have any post-prandial cravings and also consume fewer calories. My blood sugar has straightened up nicely. I feel better.

I don't want to play the devil's advocate: I am here to learn what I can eat that will not trigger cravings. Does anyone here have success?

Is there a possibility that my husband and I process food differently? He weighs a slim 140, by the way.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was a little... afraid that film would not be the best.

And I have yet to see Wonder Woman! Soon....

This is totally off topic but it reminds me of The Emoji Movie that my kids wanted to see. It was so silly and boring but I had to sit through it. Don't see it unless you can get it for free on the computer and want to. :)

Thank you for the kind welcomes!

I will say that Cowspiracy is not gross or violent like a lot of animal rights films (OK - two geese are killed.) What I like about it is the young, doofy narrator who hasn't made a film before ends up with a powerful message.

Sending cheery good wishes to all!

Welcome Night, I have not seen Cowspiracy yet. I've been putting it off. I've started watching So You Think You Can Dance now with the new season though. Love that! I will watch the documentary at some point.

Hi all!

I go by Night on SP. Live in Washington State and just became the Team Leader there. I've been on SP on and off since the beginning of 2016 but this time I'm committed to staying even when the staying gets tough. :D

I was an erratic vegetarian for years and had given up. Then tried the 6 week fast from Dr. Fuhrman's Eat To Live. Three days in, I knew I would never eat an animal again. The health part though, that was a little trickier. So here I am.....

I just saw What the Health and have to say, I thought Cowspiracy was better. But anyway looking forward to getting to know you all!

I never did WW because I just couldn't afford it. Congratulations on your weight loss, SLBROOKS! I drink both almond milk and soy milk. Almond milk for the flavor, but it only has 1 g protein per serving, so I drink soy milk as well to add more protein to my diet.

I also quit WW, mainly because they did away with the discussion boards which, in my opinion, was the best thing about the program. It gets a little expensive, too. I found sparkpeople and decided to give it a try. I'm losing weight and trying to improve my health on a low fat, whole foods, plant based diet.

Hi thanks for the recommendation for joining the team on my blog! I guess about 3 weeks ago someone told me on Facebook to check out What the Health if you have Netflix. I have Netflix and that changed my life and I have since tried to become vegan. Somewhat successfully and somewhat not. Still trying and went to Wegman's today and was thrilled with the trip. Anyway yesterday I watched the documentary Food Inc which shocked and upset me half way through it and I had to watch it in two sittings. Then today I watched Vegetated which was pretty good and less shocking for me. I have one more to watch Cowspiracy and not sure I want to see it if it is going to show gross stuff. I can always watch it in sittings like I did for Food Inc.

I have about 30 lbs to lose and I'm hoping this lifestyle also helps with that. I had quite the successful trip to Wegman's like I said and only spent $23 for a lot of good stuff.

I'm thinking of switching to a Soy or Rice milk but not sure what one to choose. Too many choices and they had tons of almond milk there. I am trying to avoid Monsatto soy products. I don't know if that is possible. Still eating some processed food in Healthy Choice Simple series that seems new. I had tonight for dinner a borrito bowl which had all beans and veggies and rice. I had a mediterranean one last week that I liked.

I had weighed 207 lbs when I started this weight loss journey and now weigh 181.4 so I have been successful starting with Weight Watchers and then quitting that because too expensive and doing everything on this site: Sparkpeople. I had already been a member for years.

Yes, I love guacamole, too! And avocados are a healthy source of fat, which your body needs.
Good for you for being lactose-intolerant and going vegan!

Hi team! I am 45 years old. I joined SparkPeople for healthy lifestyle articles and eating choices. I'm not trying to lose weight just maintain. January 1st of this year I went vegetarian. It was a pretty easy transition because meat was never front and center on my dinner plate. I love potato and pasta salads...On May 1st I made the decision to go complete Vegan. This also has been a positive experience for me because I am lactose intolerant and removing dairy(indigestion) and having to spend money on Lactaid pills is terrific. My digestion has improved greatly!

I am discovering a lot of new foods. My new love is guacamole! Life is just better with an avocado on my plate! I have made homemade veggie burgers and they were delicious and way BETTER than meat burgers! I am cooking and buying way less processed food.

I now notice how many aisles in the grocery store are loaded with pure junk. Shopping has actually gotten simpler and cheaper. The produce department is now my main stop and I feel good about my shopping cart.

Hi, I just joined. I'm newly following a vegan/plant based diet. Currently on day 5 and feeling great. Have done vegetarian in the past and participated in vegan challenges and always felt better with this way of eating. Finally decided to commit to it and feeling very positive about this new change. Also needing to lose about 40 pounds or so and feel like this could be a great group to talk to other like minded folks:)

Hi - I am not vegetarian, but I read about someone turning permanently vegetarian after trying it for 30 days and feeling amazing because of it.
