I joined the challenge so I could understand more. I have family members who were diagnosed with Type 2. I want to contribute and learn healthy lifestyles for this particular diagnosis.

Hi.
I'm new here. My name is Leslie Speakman. I've got two girls. I'm 4'11 and weigh 184. I'm obease for my size. I'm worried about my weight.
I saw my Dr. She said my blood levels are fine. Well I asked for my results and it shows that I'm one point from being type two diabetic. Also that my iron levels were one point low. So now I'm working on exercise and I have been drinking more water. Also I'm taking a low dose of iron, turmeric, and b12. Also I have epilepsy.

Hello, my name is Len. I am 59 and live in Central NJ. I am type 2 diabetic, but hope to change that by the end of this year.

I was overweight, but not really obese. I was diagnosed with type 2 maybe 6 years ago... primarily attributing it to age, and being overweight... I have been on medication since... first with metformin, then adding glipizide last year. My readings were all over the map, depending on my eating habits, which I had refused to change much...

Hopefully, that is going to change. I had been looking at weight loss programs, but didn't want anything that dictated what I could, or couldn't eat. I was in denial and felt I could lose weight if I wanted... and I could... just never made it a priority and stuck with it. Taking off 5-7 lbs wasn't that hard for me.. I stay fairly active.. so if I modified eating habits for a short period of time, I was golden.

Last fall, I found something I really like... and fit in with my lifestyle. A facebook friend was offering free samples of a product called Thrive... so I tried it.. and I liked it. More energy, less food cravings... and I was still free to chose what I wanted to eat... Well, once I got going... it was exciting to get on the scale each day. I started at 217 ( I am 6' tall). Original goal was 200, and I hit that in 5 weeks.... so I revised goal to 185 and I hit that too... maintaining weight in that range now, but going to try to go down to 170s, even if only temporary, just because I think I can.. I am happy where I am now. My glucose readings have been wonderful. 88 today... most between 75 and 100, a few slightly over, but not worried.. I know why. I am looking forward to next round of bloodwork and see where my numbers are now.

Sparkpeople has provided great support... and I look forward to seeing some of the advice, recipes and just sharing ideas with other people. it is all good... nice to hear other ideas and what works for other people.

Hopefully by year end, I will be off medication... that is my goal.. I am happy with my weight now... and nice not to have to crop pictures before posting on facebook now...lol... I was vain a little bit.. and ashamed of my gut.... also making the gym a regular part of my routine now.

Have a great weekend everyone. Good luck on your journeys!

I do not have diabetes, but I am at risk of it because of my weight and I have PCOS. I believe this is a better way to eat regardless, I definitely eat too much carbs/sugar.
My name is Christina, I am 35 and live in the Dallas area. I have 3 cats, a husband and a ste daughter. I've wanted a child of my own for as long as I can remember, and we've been trying for almost 6 years with no luck.

Hi, I'm Diane and I was diagnosed with Type 2 last January. Joining SparkPeople right away really helped me, and when I saw this challenge a few days ago I thought it would be a good time for a refresher course! Following the tips and advice from my Diabetes education class and the recommendations on the site really helped me. I had an 8 A1c on Jan. 30, 2015 and in December 2015 I had brought it down to 5.3. Along with taking Metformin, keeping track of carbs and fat and exercise helped me lose 70 pounds and bringing that A1c down. I still have weight to lose, and I really need to keep that A1c down; Being active on SparkPeople does that for me. I am really lazy, and I know unless I track every bite and drink and minute of exercise that the weight will come back in the blink of an eye along with high blood sugars. Without that accountability and team support (I'm on the Champions in the Kitchen 5% Challenge Weight Loss team), I go right back to my old bad habits.

I regret I let myself get to that diagnosis point, but honestly it was what I needed to happen in order to improve my overall health and fitness. My husband was diagnosed in 1999, so you'd think that I'd have taken note and followed his plan to control it, but apparently I have to learn everything the hard way. The most difficult thing for me was having to accept the diagnosis and realizing that for the rest of my life I have to be vigilant with the food choices I make. Sometimes it's just too overwhelming, but then I remember my dad's complications and I get back on track.

Hi I am Lora. I found out on 2/13/2016 that I have type 2 diabetes. My A1C is 6.9. The doctor wants it down to 6.0-6.5. My mother had died from diabetes. I watched her go down hill. She had gotten really sick. I am so scared that that will happen to me. My whole family has diabetes. They all had got diagnosed before they 18. Me, I am 27. I am the oldest one in my family that got diagnosed.

Hi, I'm Elaine, a 70 yr old pre-diabetic with a 5.9 A1C; I need to continue to curb sweets, cut bad carbs and lose some weight. I just finished a 21 day challenge to tame a sweet tooth successfully and want to continue on with it. My favorite exercise is walking. I had two knee replacements done 3 years ago and since then weight went up.

Hello! I'm not new to SP (on and off for years now) but new to this group. My blood sugar has skyrocketed, I need to lose a ton of weight, and I have mobility issues that make it very, very difficult (and some days impossible) to move much without severe pain. I am on medication, but not insulin -- yet -- and I fear if I don't do something and STICK to it I'll end up on insulin soon. I'm hoping that by sharing in this group and reading the comments/pages of others, I can find the strength to do what needs to be done.

Welcome NOELNARVESON. My mom does the same thing. She will cook a roast or whatever, then makes enough veggies, potatoes, etc for more meals, then divvys up the leftovers and put into used, cleaned, TV dinner trays. She takes one out, nukes it and has a salad on the side.
She says she has to only cook maybe once or twice a week this way. I started doing the same thing when my hubby worked out west.

Hi...I am not new to diabetes as I was diagnosed 30 years ago. I have been the denial route, the I don't care route, even the amputation route....Well NOW I want to be part of the continue to live route. NO EXCUSES, just finally getting it together enough to make some serious changes. I win't lie to myself and pretend it will easy...but with God's help and a lot of prayer, I will succeed in breaking all the bad habits this time. If you are starting this journey of living with diabetes...make sure you listen to all medical instructions and remember...YOU ARE WORTH IT.

My name is Bonnie. I am 70 years old just diagnosed with CHF and diabetes. I already had COPD. Just came out of a week long stay in hospital. I have been told that I need to stick to a 2g sodium diet of 1800 calories a day and counting my carbs if I want to stay off diabetes meds. I also take predisone for my COPD issues and that makes me want to eat and hold solium. I lost 15 pounds in hospital through diet and water pills, now I am home and really need to keep the goal up of losing another 50 pounds (dr's goal for me). I am so glad I found this challenge and I have read all the comments. I really need the support because I am truly a foodaholic and can no longer do this. Dr put me on the food exchange...but I do not understand how many daily carbs I should be eating...I know that milk, fruit and starches are 15 grams....but how do you count it because when I put my food in the tracker the numbers are much higher

Life is short...pray hard.

Hello! My name is Karla and I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes about 6 years ago and when I went to a new doctor about a year and a half ago I was diagnosed with diabetes based on my A1C of 7 that day. I told the doctor I did not want to go on medication but wanted to try to manage it by eating better, exercising and losing weight. Have not been to the doctor since because I've used excuses not to such as concentrating on the work being done on my teeth (had all the top ones pulled and two bottom ones and now wear a full plate on top and a partial on the bottom. Also because I was concentrating on my dad's and husband's health which seemed so much worse than mine. This year I am going to work with the doctor to get my health under control (even though I still do not want to take pills). I have been working on being more consistent this past few months and am getting better about checking in every day, walking every day (but one rest day), drinking 8 water, eating more fruits and vegetables and cutting down on mindless snacking (which still needs a lot of work). Also I need to work on better sleep habits and getting into a sleep routine. My struggle is sometimes I'm not tired at night so I stay up until 3 or 4 in the morning and then I sleep half the day. It's going to be quite the journey this year and this challenge is the first stop.

Hi all:
This is my second time around on this team.
The first time I was inconsistent and never came close to accomplishing my goals.
So this time around my goal is consistency, consistency, consistency. Particularly when it comes to exercise.
For about 3 weeks now my pre-breakfast numbers have been really good.
I am actually on day 4 right now and, although it is only 4 days, I have stayed on target.

Hello I am here because I do not know what I am doing I have pre diabetes and was not even sure what that meant until I had my gout attack and a nurse explained it to me, so I have to fight two demons and finding things to eat is very hard. with gout I can eat rice but diabetes not. This is going to be a hard journey to find out what to eat.... and it is hard to walk so now will be trying chair exercises. I know I am rambling sorry just so mind boggling. emoticon

Hi, I'm Leslie

I was diagnosed with diabetes last January. I bought Atkins Diabetes Revolution and I haven't looked back.

I believe low carb is the best thing for diabetics and pre diabetics. My numbers normalized quickly, and as long as I keep doing this, I will be able to keep it that way. There are lots of low carb hacks for many of the things we love. That's why I think I can continue this long-term.

I have lost 43 pounds in the last year, and I have about 17 to my goal. I'm an older woman, so it's slow.

I am joining this page to help others.

Hello Everyone,

I'm a return visitor to SparkPeople and felt it was past time to take control of my health.

I am from the great state of Ohio and love to bike, playing cards, playing basketball and tennis. Some other hobbies include kayaking fairly new at, fishing and small business owner on the side.

We're in the process of getting our foster parenting training and hoping to foster to adopt a wonderful little girl. We both have male children from other relationships and decided it would be nice to mutually help some child out and have them brighten up the house.

Looking forward to getting to know you all better as we each battle our food/health demons :)

Have an amazing day...

Tom

We are still on vacation in Switzerland and will need to continue to enjoy the beautiful presentations our daughter in law makes for us. But I want to get mentally ready for returning to our kitchen. Here we have wonderful fresh whole foods. I want to get to y.m.c.a. On a very regular basis. I need to make healthier snack choices. Mostly I need the support of others. I tend to take advantage of my hubby. He loves me and will do anything I ask. I need to learn not to ask for unhealthy stuff.

I have used SparkPeople before so I am familiar with the site. I just need to start following a plan that will see real results.
My Name is Marilyn. I am 61 years old. I am single. My husband died in December of 2010. My oldest son died in March 2014. I have 3 adult children and 7 grandchildren. I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2006 when I had a heart attack. The tiny capillaries that feed the heart are blocked so unable to do surgery. I have an implantable defibrillator in my chest just in case I have another heart attack. I just say the cardiologist and he is pleased that we have finally got my medications doing what they are supposed to do to help me avoid complications from different issues I have had. My goal is to start getting the exercise I need to get stronger and to start eating a heart healthy diet. I don't have anyone to hold me accountable and that is what I really need.

Mother of 4, youngest will be 4 in the middle of January. I have lost more than 50lbs since my youngest child was born, but it still wasn't enough to help me avoid the dx of pre-diabetes. Boo! Teaching myself everything I can about GI and have gone gluten-free for other health reasons. I'm really hoping that these dietary changes and more strength training/cardio will help me lose 20-25 more pounds and kick the diagnosis!

Finally taking charge and responsibility for my health. Need to lose 20 lbs but should lose 40 lbs. I've tried before, drop the weight and then fall off the wagon.

Hello everyone. I am 73, retired and pre diabetic with an A1C of 6.5. I am trying to eat right, stay fit, lose a little weight and bring my A1C down without using meds or insulin. I feel like my life has been turned upside down but I'm going to give it all I've got. I've been told this will last for the rest of my life so I have some life-style changes to make. Good luck everyone.

Hi team, I'm Shirley. I am the main menu planner and cook for my sister who has diabetes. As she works on a computer all day she is never on at home. I'm 71 and long retired. I hope to learn a little here to help my meal planning. "Never, never, never give up."

I am type 2 found out a little more than 4 years ago. I was told i was pre diabetic then i was due to my lack of knowledge. When i started 4 years ago and started to pull my big boy shorts up this past February my BS was 280 and A1C 8.6 before medication. I was on 1000 mg mediaform twice daily and Juniva once a day and my Cholesterol.
In April i went to a ENDO and what a learning experience i recommend one so much!!!!!!
By then with Spark and eating better by that time i lost 30 pounds and was taking off my Juniva and my BS was in the low 100's and my Cholesterol was down.
My next visit in September was better i lost another 20 pounds was now down to one 1000 mg once a day and my taken off my Cholesterol medication so with proper diet working out it can be done. My next ENDO is in January hoping to be drooped down to 500mg!

Hello

I am Sandy. I live in Pa. I am a bachelor level behavioral therapist and seminary student. I am also a caregiver for my mother who has diabetes. I am taking the challenge to learn more about diabetes to help my mom. I think I will be able to incorporate some of the challenges to make me healthier as well. I am learning alot already and I hope to learn more.

Sandy

Hello everyone!
My name is Kris and I am from Nova Scotia, Canada. I am 28, mother to two beautiful children (ages 6 and 1), married to my best friend and work as a dispenser selling eye glasses (a surprisingly fun job).
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when I was 19 and was rediagnosed as a slow to progress type 1 about two years later. I am insulin dependent but even so my sugars have been a bit all over the place for a few months now and I really need to get them under control.
I am happy to be here and really look forward to meeting other people on this journey to better health!
Cheers!

Hello! I am Patricia from west-central Illinois, currently 59 years old, married for 34 years, and the mother of six grown children, with one grandson. I hope to reduce my weight from 200 to 125 pounds, to reduce my need for medication for hypertension, and to avoid diabetes.
