IT'S OFFICIAL!

I have begun the C25K! The W1D1 was not very hard (just hard enough) I think because of my two weeks of walking at a pace that was (and IS) as fast as the very very slow "run" I am doing at this start of the C25K.

AND I lost two pounds last week! YAYYYYYYY!

Keep on keepin' on!

Oh my goodness, I'm so jealous of those of you who live in Oregon & get to see Haystack Rock every day (or even every month)!! I spent 6 months in Beaverton (just wanted to live by myself on the West coast before I got married) and boy, I'd move back there in a heartbeat if all my family weren't on the East coast!

I drove over to the coast at least 3-4 times a week... :) The Pacific is such a beautiful, moody ocean... love it... miss it... :)

Hi all! I had to take a few months off of running due to some knee problems, but I'm back and restarting the C25K. I'm probably going to repeat each week about 2-3 times so it'll take me the better part of a year to get finished. At least I'm back in gear running. I tried to stay motivated just with walking and cardio machines at the gym, but nothing feels as good as running. Next up for me is W1D3.

2XWHATIWANT - Good for you!! For completing W2D2 AND "sweating" it out!!

I prefer to run in the morning - day off or not - simply because it's cooler. (Although it doesn't get terribly hot here.) The hardest part is GETTING. OUT. THE. DOOR.

W2D2 completed!

Wow is it ever getting HOT outside. I really don't want to start running on a treadmill for fear of boredom and tripping over my own feet. I'm going to see about making sure I get my runs in on MWF before work since I don't see myself getting up early on Saturdays. LOL I had to really talk myself into keeping moving today just because it was so miserably hot out. But...I did it! YAY!

Hi, everyone!! Just found this group!

I'm on W3D3 tonight... Kind of nervous about starting W4! :) I do some on a treadmill (based on TIME run) and some at track (based on distance)... makes things interesting. But, boy, do I find it harder on the track! Mostly because the outdoors isn't air conditioned in GA. :)

Generally, I enjoy the first 2 or 3 legs or running, but the last 1 or 2 isn't a whole lot of fun for me yet. However, I'm SO PROUD of myself when I'm finished that it makes it all worth it!

I've had issues with shin splints, but new shoes last week has mostly handled that. Now, my calf muscles aren't super thrilled with DURING my run, but I guess that will just improve with time!

DINKS97420 - If you have an ipod nano (I think) or ipod Touch (mine), you can add your own playlist. If you have the Shuffle, I think you're stuck with the podcast. Tell me what kind of ipod you have, and I'll tell you how to download the music!

I found the runs on www.coolrunning.com and www.runnersworld.com. Also see if your parks and rec has any listed. If you're in Coos Bay, your closest "Big City) is Roseburg? I would check to see what THEY have (maybe Google 5k's in Roseburg). Somewhere you can drive in a day trip. (We go to Portland for day trips all the time.)

I did my first 5k when I had only completed Week 4. I set a playlist of songs that I could "alternate" like in the C25k, but without starting off walking. I basically ran every other song (or two, at the beginning!). I came in last that day, but AHEAD of the QUITTERS!!! AND I did it on hard packed sand! (Cannon Beach).

I have to agree - I have never gotten a bad look or comment when running. Bus drivers wave, neighbors wave, even the seriously buff neighbor dudes wave! I think it's more in our own heads than anything!

Although, one older neighbor did stop me, thinking I was somebody else. Polite girl that I am, I stopped, but was thinking, "If you see somebody running, don't interupt them, unless their house is on fire!!" Messed up my program for the day. (However, I am pleased to report I came in two minutes EARLY that day - must've felt I needed to step it out after the interuption!)

People are more supportive of us fluffies than we give them credit for. My Nike+ posts my runs on Facebook, and I get lots of compliments and support - even from mere aquaintances. My progress has even inspired others (non-Sparkies), to get out there!

So, get out there in the fresh air and ruuuuunnnnn!!!

KRIZZO17 - I agree! It was liberating the day I decided to say to heck with it and run. I did get one cat-calling whistle from a car, which I'm sure was sarcastic, but whatever. I'm running and they're loafing! Everyone else I have crossed paths with waves and smiles.

We had a block yard sale last week that happened to be on the same day as a 5K and our street was on the route. Everyone hosting a sale stood and clapped and cheered for every single person that passed us. There was clearly the high athletes in front running like they were being chased by a lion, but towards the middle, I started to see people just like me, and everyone else in this thread, trying their hardest. It was inspiring!! I can't wait until I'm ready to join them.

We CAN do this! emoticon

NACHOSMAMA - Nope - no pain at all. And no, they don't have support and the cushioning is limited to being able to feel the rocks on the road without them hurting too much or cutting your feet. emoticon

There is a theory that the extra cushioning is what causes injury from making the shoes work and not the feet. Running barefoot is supposed to encourage a more natural stride, in addition to making the feet, ankles, and legs stronger on their own right - your body is doing the work and not the shoes.

I have to say, so far, I agree. I've not had any trouble at all. And this is coming from the person who sprains her ankle regularly in Zumba and Step class. emoticon

So, from my limited experience, I say thumbs up on the Vibram Five Fingers.

SGTMOM911 - In your posts you have your 5K's listed at the bottom that you have completed and working towards. I also live on the Oregon Coast (Coos Bay) and have had a hard time finding them. Where did you find all of them????? Looking forward to doing my first in August maybe sooner if I keep progressing through the program. Also, I downloaded the Robert Utley podcast and he has his own music. Where did you find the one where you can put your own music in? Roberts is good but I need a little bit more upbeat music.

Thanks for the review of the five finger shoes. I have been wondering about them! Keep us updated on how it is going.

And yes, I can't stress enough what a difference getting properly fitted for shoes is... I waited three months to do it and I felt like a huge dummy because it was like running on clouds after I got my stability shoes made especially for overpronators like me. Tip: A lot of bigger people will overpronate because of our bigger thighs!

I think getting over the fear of being seen running is the biggest thing that C25K gives us big girls... there's almost something magical about it! I just keep telling myself that I've never seen a heavy person running and thought badly of them, I've always been jealous that they're actually doing it!

I bought new sneakers on wednesday after experiencing horrible pain on W2D1 that most likely came from the fact that my sneakers were 2.5 years old! I can't get over how comfortable these are...I'm excited to go for my first run in them after work! I'll let you know how they are :)

Hi Heather,

I think the majority of us started with the C25k program. You can download it to your ipod ($2.99). Some use a podcast; I use my own playlist. It has heavy metal, pop, country, disco! But it gets me MOVING!! You can customize the settings to tell you when you are halfway done, last run coming up, etc. It already prompts you when to run and walk.

I also have Nike+ running shoes and the Nike+ sensor. You can run that app in the background on your ipod, so it tracks your time, distance and pace. Connect to the Nike Plus site, and you can tell it to post your stats to Facebook or Twitter. (I like bragging!)

If you don't have the shoes, you can still get the sensor and a little pouch to attach to your shoe. It's $20-$25. However, the calories burned shows about twice what Sparkpeople shows when I plot it on the map (for the same distance and time). So, I'd rather go low, and go with what Spark says for calories burned.

BTW, I am also 5'4" (on a good day!) and currently 238. It's hard, but stick with it. It DOES get easier. Sign up for a 5k later in the summer to work toward. Having a GOAL makes it easier to keep up the work!

Try running in the morning or evening when it's a little cooler. Stretch REALLY good AFTER you run. Take ibuprofen BEFORE you run. And use ice packs (or frozen veggies - like yucky lima beans!) to ice any sore spots.

Good luck, have fun and keep us posted!!!

Andi

2XWHATIWANT - Look at you GOOOOOO!

That is so cool - and sweet - that you read this WHOLE thread! I think maybe I'd like to do that to rejuvenate myself and my resolve!!

It's great that you decided not to care what others think about you running. I sure don't! I ran my first 5k on Memorial Day weekend (using intervals, because I am not done with C25k yet). I finished last. But you know what else? I beat the QUITTERS!!!

Have fun and see you around!!

I recently started the C25K after much research and doubt that I could do it at my weight. Then I found this thread and decided it was worth a shot.

I am the type of person that falls just walking normally for no apparent reason. I sprain my ankle with the slightest turn. And I am EXTRA FLUFFY. I started this tipping the scales at 256 lbs. Needless to say, I was terrified of failing and even more terrified of injury.

After lots of reading, I decided to do the barefoot method, so I went to the running store and bought myself some Vibram Five Finger shoes. They are the ugliest shoes I have ever seen, but I do love them! I have yet to experience a single bit of pain, shin splint, ankle pain....nothing.

W1D1 I "cheated" a little. I did all my intervals, but I did them in a parking lot from a closed down movie theatre that's hard to see from the road. You see, I wanted to run outside but had the fear of being seen.

After reading enough posts on here, I got the confidence to say to heck with anyone who gave me flack about thundering my fluffy self down the road.

W1D2 - waited until noon, ran into a park. There were hills. 85 degrees + hills + extra fluffy + newbie = OMG I MAY NEED AN AMBULANCE TO GET HOME!!! I got dizzy, almost threw up, almost passed out...I had to sit under a tree for 5 minutes in the shade just to be able to waddle back home.

Lesson learned - not ready for hills, work out before 10 am.

W1D2 The Sequel - ran in the neighbourhood on the sidewalks, avoiding all hills. OK! This I can do!

W1D3 - used sidewalks in neighbourhood. MUCH BETTER.

W2D1 - I did it! Woot!

And now you're up to date on my C25K progress. I look forward to running (pun intended) this journey with you all.

emoticon

Hello Fellow Fluffies!

You don't know me yet, but I feel like family in here. I have been quietly reading all 36 pages of this thread over the past 1.5 weeks or so.

So, first, let me say - I've been watching all of you progress. Even if you don't feel like you have, your posts show AMAZING amounts of progress. It's truly been an inspiring read.

I've seen some of you go from "No way can I run at ALL" to finishing your C25K's.

I've seen some of you stop and restart - determined to keep going no matter what.

I've seen some of you repeating week after week after week, trying like crazy to get past your hurdles. You may be frustrated, but from a lurker, it shows incredible strength that you're trying! No matter what you think, it's not defeating you at all! Why? Because you're still trying! It's amazing!

This is my KUDOS TO YOU post! I feel privileged to have followed your stories.

Hey Fluffies,

Just checking in. I am back in the land of the living. Done with traveling and about to start my pediatric residency on Monday. emoticon

I didn't manage to get much exercising done while traveling. So yesterday I went for a jog. I had aspirations to do 5k but only managed 2 miles. I did it in about 37 mins which is SLOW emoticon even for me. I feel like I might have pulled a muscle in my leg (almost groin). So I am taking it easy today and will try again tomorrow.

It is great to see all the Newbies here!

Hi all!

I missed walking on Tuesday and I slowed down a bit yesterday, due to a run (115 mile drive) to get 11 stitches in one of my fingers. Laid it open on a steel stock gate. Oh well! Didn't get home until 11pm.

I guess it's the meds but I am really really tired. Won't stop me though. Might slow me down though.

But the great news is that I am on VACATION! I am a full-time caregiver to my 93 year old Mom and in 16 months of care I had only had 3 weeks off. I was about to lose my mind.

Finally found a month of care that we can (barely) afford so I took her to town the day after I had been there for the emergency room.

That's about it. My MP3 player arrived today and I hope my bra gets here on Friday. I may put off the beginning of my C25K until it DOES arrive.

We ARE DOING GREAT!

I can't believe I forgot to add this when everyone was talking about clothes - Danskin's moisture wicking shirts really work! Sometimes I work out at the gym at work, which means opting for more modest clothing since I'm with my coworkers, and for years I only ever wore tank tops to work out. But I swear, they aren't kidding that this stuff keeps you dry...and the best part is you can get it at walmart for around $7 a shirt!

Yeah! I finished W4 today! The last 5 minute run has been a killer all week. I still had to take a couple of 10 step breaks today. I'm excited to start W5 with the big 20 minute run at the end.

When I run, I wear capri's made of quick dry material (love them!), a tank top and a hooded bug shirt! The only two things I don't like about my forest runs - the hills & the bugs.

For those of you just starting out... keep going! The first few weeks are hard, but it does get easier & you'll recover faster. Lots of people - including me - take a few weeks to work up to week 1. If that's you, don't feel bad about that. If you keep at it, you WILL see results.

On non-running days, I try to do a variety of activities including: gardening, kayaking, hiking, a boot-camp style workout, dancing with the "Barefoot Dancer"...and I'm looking forward to adding swimming in the lake to that list soon.

LADYLIGHT - Also try www.runnersworld.com to find 5k's. As the season gets better, you should find more. (They have been hard to find in my area. I have to go to the "big city" for some!)

Also check with your parks and rec department. I also got some links from running friends on facebook to ones I wouldn't otherwise find.

Well, W1D2 is in the books!! I headed out the door at 5:00 AM and got my run/walk in. I think I need to run in the AM. I seem to have more "leg" at that time than at the end of a busy work day. I am thinking that I might get to do this!! Pretty cool emoticon

KRIZZO17 - I understand the shin pain! I had it for about the first 3 weeks.

A few things that should help: ibuprofen BEFORE you run, stretching (shin area) really well AFTER you run as well as ICE after you run, if you can sit for about 15 minutes!!

You might end up having to take a week or two off if the pain doesn't go away. Overall, the pain should subside in time.

Mine was always my left shin (and calf). It went away, but I slacked on the runs for awhile - only running once or twice a week because I didn't want to get my treadmill out when it was raining! I'm back at it, and again having a little pain, but not like the first time around! It would help if I remembered to follow my own advice!

Have a FABULOUS cruise to Bermuda!!

Hi Everyone :)

My name is Sandy, and I'm a 24 year old Buckeye staying in San Diego. I've battled with my weight for a long time and I really am wanting to get these pounds off for good!

I've tried the C25k program in the past, and didn't get anywhere past week 1! This time my goal is to finish the entire program. :) I would like to be able to do a couple of 5ks this year!

Hey everyone! I've been on and off this program for the past year...but now I'm ready to finish it! I'm picking up on week 5 and I'm hoping to done with the C25k in 4 weeks! I've signed up for 10k in September and I'm no where near able to run that yet. But first I need to be able to run a 5k before I can run a 10k! I hope to get to know all of you!

Thanks for the workout ideas for the "in between" days. I like my 30-Day Shred video, and was wondering if it might be a good choice to do in between the running since it has cardio and strength combined?

M-TH I have an hour weight training class plus I do additional cardio if I have time then I run on Thursday night Friday is my day off and then I run Sat and Sun.

I also found some longer bike shorts at Walmart very cheap and I buy them a size to small so that they are tight and won't ride up!

Just wanted to share that if any of you are on FaceBook, you should add "CoolRunning". They post topics every day from professional as well as garden-variety runners on things like shin splints, nutrition, hydration, training for 5k's up to marathons, etc. I have learned a LOT from there!

I do My Fitness Coach on the Wii and/or walking on my off days from running. I like My Fitness Coach because there is cardio and weights, ab work, etc all combined and it's never the same workout.

I need to get some of those capris. I wear shorts right now, and the riding up of the legs/thigh area is driving me nuts! On the days that I don't do the running I try to do some weights. I have some free weights at home and a weight bench.

ECLECTIC_ME - I do Zumba once a week (schedule conflict during the school year). Going twice a week starting next week. Also now that the weather is getting better, I ride bikes with my daughter. I've got her up to 5 miles - which is also breaking in my butt slowly!

Don't forget strength training!

ALLCURVES: I wear spandex-y/cotton-y capris - kinda like bike shorts, only longer, and a loose shirt (long or short sleeve, depending on the weather). I just ordered some bike shorts from www.womanwithin.com, $10.99/pr if you order two or more. Hopefully they're as good as the capris. I will still wear oversized shirts with it to cover the belly! If you don't want to wear bike shorts alone, you can wear regular shorts over them (I've seen lots of runners do this). The point is for your thighs not to chafe!

Wanted to stop by and say HELLO! I am restarting the C25K with Week2 Day1 - and I just completed it this morning.
Just curious... what do some you do for a workout between the running days?

Hello all! I am new to this group, but WAY pumped about it! I am going to be turning 30 here in a couple weeks, and I am nowhere near what I thought I would be at 30! It's time for a change, and as my friend told me to repeat to myself..."Thirty, flirty and fabulous!"
I have to commend y'all...the posts on here are very encouraging and motivating. I am also a big girl, and that part of it scares me about this venture. But, reading your posts has given me the "oomph!" I needed to take this one final step towards DOING IT!
I am very excited about this venture! I'll keep y'all updated!
