Hi Mary, you will learn to love running. I had the desire to run, and started the Couch to 5k plan. I have had a few minor setbacks along the journey, but keep moving forward to overcome them. Was having shin and calf problems. Got some new shoes and just remembering everyday to stretch. I am overweight, so this adds to my issues. But I am determined to overcome them to be a runner.

Hi Mary. I am 55 and had never ever been a runner in my life. I started running about 3 months ago and was doing really good until hot weather really hit, and I've slowed down some but still doing it. I've been on vacation and traveling for the past 2 weeks and got back last night and only ran once during that time. Today too exhausted but tomorrow getting back to it. I really do like it now. I'm not fast, but I enjoy it, and when weather permits I really like running on trails as opposed to streets or the treadmill but in the heat I'm doing most of it on the treadmill. It can become very addicting. I always say if I can do it, anyone can.

I'm so glad to meet you! I "sort of" started yesterday, but I am making today my official
Day 1!! We cn do this together!!! I am NOT a runner at all!!!!! But I WILL be!!!!

I noticed your comment on another message board about tracking calories. That's a good ? and I will check back to see what everyone says. I always walk with my iPod and it has a pedometer--I don't know if it's accurate or not.

Good luck on your Day 2!! I'm out the door to get started!!!

WooHoo!!!!

Hi! I'm new to running too! I've NEVER enjoyed running-it always felt more like torture! I keep hearing so many good things about the C25K that I am intrigued. I want to be the fit, toned runners I see on the road! I think this program has a great strategy. Today was W1D1 for me and even though it was hard, it felt so GOOD to have done it! We are gonna get there! emoticon

Welcome to C25K

It all starts with the first step. Pretty soon you will feel like you are flying. It is addicting. Now I'm subscribing to Runner's World Magazine. Really?

Stick with C25K it made me and so many others into a runner.

Thanks for all the welcomes and good advice! I stepped out the door earlier and actually walked 2 miles (up my very steep driveway and back down). Doing that twice gives me almost 2 miles! 1.89 to be exact!!

I have printed out the Spark Your Way to a 5K program and am going to get started.

Thank you all!!~!

Hi Mary and welcome,

I completely understand about heart disease running in a family, both of my parents are gone due to it and a few of my siblings have also suffered heart attacks. Me, well, my heart just beats to a different drummer! LOL
I am terribly sorry about the loss of your dad.

The hardest part to running or any exercise is stepping out that door. I started kinda sorta but not really running last year and then stopped - always could come up with a great excuse! A few weeks ago I started the C25K and can't believe that I am actually on week 4!

If I can do it, anyone can do - You just have to look to the group as your accountability partner and take that first step.

Just start where you are and wishing well on your new running adventure,
Glenna in TX

Merissa said it so well. Itís not about speed. It is about proving something to yourself. I am 64 years old, never run before and started in late April and loved it. I didnít/donít run fast or even outside in this Tennessee heat and humidity. I often run barefooted or in socks on my treadmill while watching TV or listening to a fast beat on my iPod. I am not consistent about the days I run. But I do it. I love it. I feel so full of energy afterward.

LOL!!! No dragging necessary! You have the motivation to do it. Before long you will be planning your day around your run, running in the rain, and loving it! Believe it. It will happen. I starting the C25k Program in October 2009, and starting this week I have been getting up before 5:30 to get in an early run to beat the heat as I am training to run another half marathon and a full marathon later this year. Do it for you! Do it because of how you feel after a run.

This is my day, my hour, my minute, my time is here, now!

I can't drag you outside, but I can surely encourage you on here. Start off slow, it's not about the speed, it's about proving something to yourself. Listen to your body and what it's telling you so that you don't push too hard.

You'll be a runner in no time!

I hear you - my father's brother was my age when he died, and Mom was ten years older (mid-fifties). Even with the whammy from both sides of the family I ate too much and exercised too little (well, never).

My motivation hasn't been "not dying". What has worked for me is focusing on how good it feels to finish running :-) Fortunately, the endorphins last all day.

The other trick that's worked for me is not to think about it - Just Do It. If I think about how much I don't want to start running, or how comfy the bed is, I might talk myself out of it.

Best of luck -

I'm not trying to be faster than you. I'm trying to be better than me.

Hey, all! My name is Mary and I have to make myself walk, and I have never been a runner!! Heart disease runs in my family (my dad died at the age I am now). I may be nuts, but I want to run!!!! My doc says "get moving"--so here I am. Can anybody out there come to my house and drag me outside?!?!?! emoticon
