Hi, My name is Cyndy.
I just joined this team. I want to lower my salt intake and lower my blood pressure. I'd like to track my sodium.

At my last check up. A nurse's assistant checked my blood pressure. She could not get a reading twice. The third time she put the cuff on. It actually hurt my arm. The end result was = Systolic reading was 130 and Diastolic reading was 65. Puts me in Prehypertension range.
My goal is a normal blood pressure reading = 120/ 80

Hope to get great tips from you all!
MADE a MISTAKE, LEAVING THIS TEAM, BUH emoticon

Hi everyone! I'm Sheila and I'm joining this group to help my 81 yr Dad who was recently diagnosed with CHF and must limit his sodium to 2000mg per day. He is also diabetic (12 yrs) with COPD (3 yrs) but they are more concerned with getting the sodium intake under control for now which will take pressure off his heart and lungs so he can breath easier and hopefully not have to use oxygen 24/7. I'm not new to SP but have been away from it for quite awhile.

I don't want to get to a particular "size", I want to get to a healthy weight for me.

I have to WANT to do this for ME and nobody else.

Your on the right road, by reading the amount of sodium that is listed on the back of the packages that you buy is a big start. You have to make up your mind as to how much you will allow the amount. I don't use anything stating 500. Hope I have been helpful.

Hi I joined spark people to track my sodium and potassium levels as well as lose weight. Doing well with the weight but lowering the sodium level is hard. I thought I was very health until my doctor told me that my potassium level was -very low and my sodium level was ++high. Both of these together were dangerous. Now I track my exercise and food.

I do believe that you have come to the right place. By following Spark and using their recipes I have shocked my doctor last week at my wellness examination with a fantastic blood culture results. You can do that as well. Hang in there.

Hi There!
I have been trying to follow a diet for reducing my blood pressure as well as my cholesterol for the past year. Both my cholesterol and blood pressure were elevated last year when I went to the doctors office and since then I have been following the guidelines for reducing my cholesterol as well as following information I have found on the DASH way of eating.

I will find out sometime this coming week what my cholesterol levels are now. Last year my HDL was extremely good, but the LDL was climbing and my overall cholesterol was just over 200.

My blood pressure this past week was 140/78 and the doctor is not too concerned since it has come down. But I would like to get it down even further if I can. In the past year I have dropped 15 pounds - I was only 125 pounds last year at this time and I am 63.75 inches tall so I was not overweight and when I started to change things, my goal was to get the cholesterol and blood pressure down, not loose weight (I know that sounds strange to most folks)

Anyway, my mother has been taking medication for high blood pressure for years, and both parents take medication for high cholesterol. I prefer to see if I can control them with diet and exercise rather than prescription medications.

I am not really new to sp, or this Forum. I originally lost over 50 lbs, reached my first goal, set new goal, quickly was stopped at a plateau, couldn't break it, got discouraged. gave up , stopped tracking on sp. I did manage to maintain for three years but then gained 6 lbs. so came back to sp, lost the 6 lbs. but still cannot break through the plateau--- emoticon I
I am back and I will not quit or give up this time, I am here to stay and I will get off this plateau, nothing is going to stop me!!!! emoticon

I always look at the amount of sodium in a recipe. If it reaches 500 and over I don't use it. There are so many tasty ones in Sparks that you can never get tired of trying new ones. It has worked for me. I hope it will work for you.

Like your little sign says "You can do it". When I first started to watch my salt intake the food tasted very bland. As the days went by I started to actually taste the food itself. I can honestly say that I don't remember the last time I used that shaker. Welcome to our team.

Hi, I'm new to the team. I love salt. I can give up sweets with no problem, but find it hard to avoid salty foods. I'm pretty good watching salt from the salt shaker, but it's the salty treats that do me in. I need to use less salt as I have high blood pressure and need to lose some weight. I'm taking it one day at a time. I love to cook and am trying to use the salt shaker less and always looking for some good healthy new recipes to try.
Please feel free to stop by my Sparkpage and get to know me better.

Hi, I'm new to this team and new to trying to reduce salt in my diet, but not to SP. lol I've started and stopped a million times on here but I'm trying again. I've been recently really concerned about how fat my face is looking and I read somewhere that a high salt intake could be one of the reasons? I eat a TON of salt, and always have. Not just salty foods but I put a ton on top of most of my foods as well. Except for one meal in the past week and a half, I have not used salt on top of my food at all! I have found now that I am craving salty foods more than usual. I will eventually limit those as well, but for now I am going to try making sure I get 8 glasses of water in every day and not adding any salt to my food. Looking for advice and support here on SP. :) Have a great night.

Hi, I'm Martha from southern MD, been active on sparkpeople since Oct 2013, lost 34 pounds slowly but surely. Right now I'm working on reducing my sodium and sugar. Went to the Dr for physical in 2014 even though had lost a few pounds had pre hypertension, cholesterol & AIC were above normal range. Went for physical in 2015 and all numbers were within normal ranges and I had lost a few more pounds. Went for physical this year and I was right back to where I was in 2014. So working on getting ranges normal again. I'm divorced for many years, have 2 children, 10 grand kids and 4 great grands that I want to get healthier so I can be around for. I eat out way to much and I'm really working on cooking at home. I exercise every day, drink at least 8 glasses of water and track my food. I know what I need to work on, just need to do it. Keep sparking!!

Hi! I'm Christopher.

In 2002, I caught a virus while travelling for business and wound up with an infection that settled into the fluid that surrounds my heart, causing the heart muscle tissue to inflame and enlarge. That began my heart health journey, which included; medications, a pacemaker, defibrillator, an LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device), the transplant list, & in May of 2014 a heart transplant.

I've been loso now for 7 years and have been blogging about my journey, tips, and recipes on my blog: www.hackingsalt.com. I love to help others on this low sodium journey, and hope to learn a few things as well. Glad to be here!

Believe me. I know exactly what Menieres Disease can do. I am also afflicted with it and the Positional Balance phase which accompanies Menieres for some. I have endolymphatic sac surgery several years ago with a shunt put in my left ear to try to get it under control. IT DID NOT WORK.. I have had to come to gripes with the fact that the only way to control it is strictly controlled sodium intake..(my goal from my physician is 1500 mg per day). You will learn from the forums and topics, that we strive daily to find new ways to control that intake number. I had a rough day yesterday with the balance thing. If you need help or if we can be of assistance, I am only a sparkmail away. Hugs, Mama Judy

Joining this forum and hoping to get ideas for dealing with a low sodium diet. I have recently been diagnosed with Meniere's disease and have been in crisis since the end of January. i have been aggressive in lowering my sodium intake as this is one of the few changes that helps control Meniere's. I have always loved to cook and am frustrated by the amount of sodium in my favorite recipes, looking to find ways to add a depth of flavor and still eat low sodium. I am lucky to have a very supportive husband in this journey. Any and all help and encouragement is welcomed and I hope to be able to do the same!

Ladies, I just would like to tell you all that the fight is well worth the time and energy. I have kept my salt intake below 2500 by cooking at home most of the time. When I purchase a TV dinner I look at the amount of salt. You will be surprised when you do so how high these "diet" companies packaged foods level of salt is. WOW! Good luck to all of you. I only wish you the best.

Hi! Newat56
DR put DH on a low salt diet DASH, we are starting Monday. We have spent the last few days discussing our plan and how to get him to follow it. emoticon He doesn't take change well, but he wants to get off of meds. We will see. It will benefit me as well because salt really really causes water retention for me. I can fluctuate as much as 5 or 6 lbs a night. I have been working really hard this week and have weighed the same every morning for the last 6 days. I need to lose but am just happy to be maintaining without all the water this week.

Hello, Jessie724. Glad you are with us. Sodium levels in foods can be alarming. Read labels, and watch for hidden salt in fast foods and all processed foods. We are here for you and if you need help, please do not hesitate to ask. Just keep on keeping a journal the way that is best for you. Anyway you can keep track. That is the way to learn. Hugs, Mama Judy.

Hello. I'm new to lowering salt intake. Use to tracking calories and fiber, carbs and fat, but sodium is new and quite scarey especially after a trip to the ER. I'm quite over whelmed by it all.
So here I am again, constantly trying to lose weight. I work nights and that seems to mess things up all the time. Today I'm feeling better and just waiting to find out what is involved in the whole process.
Tracked breakfast today but my computer is slow and frustrates me. I can journal faster by writing, but am trying to do this whole spark adventure.
thank you Mama Judy for the note.
I'm 63 and hoping to make it a little farther. I have 6 kids and 6 grandkids who I just adore. The world is better with them in it. Hoping to read many interesting blogs here.

Hi, I'm really not that new to Lowering Salt Intake but I would like to introduce myself to all of you This coming May 7th I will be 80 years young. The first in my family that has ever reached such a fine age. I chalk it up to eating well and watching my weight. This November 15th will mark the 16th year of my second marriage. I have 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 2 great grand children of my own. There are a total of 8, 12, and 5. I joined SP in 2012 which was one of the best thing I have ever done for myself as far as weight and health goes. Thank you Mama Judy for caring.
