Hi, I'm new to SparkPeople and this team. I actually haven't had as much problem with my depression as in the past, but every once in a while it hits and it's a struggle still. I'm not on any medication (I was on Lexapro quite a few years ago) and don't go to therapy or anything anymore. I have found working out to really help, which I think is why I was doing so much better until this past semester when it was too busy and my grandma ended up in the hospital four hours away. (She passed away this past Thanksgiving, it's started out as a rough holiday season this year) I also am very aware that my depression likes to creep back up around Christmas time, which may be worse this year with the things that have been going on lately, but we'll see.

emoticon to the team, SVAN13MARTINS aka Sarah. So many of this team know what it is like to be stuck in a depression where all you want to do is eat. The good news is that many of us, including me, have found that just posting on the team threads keeps us "honest" during those times. Not only does it keep our hands too busy to eat, but it helps us remain focus on our healthy goals. Feel free to join us on our Daily Thread found on the team page. It is a great place to find motivation and additional support. You are NOT alone.

Hi, all. I'm new to this team. My name is Sarah. I'm hovering somewhere near 200 lbs again. Was at 188 (best in years). Just hit a moderate depression. Didn't see it creeping up until it was too late. Now I am so close to just giving up the weight loss battle. I have a personal trainer and I've thought about canceling out on her as well. I just want to eat all the time and have absolutely no motivation. Eating has become my comfort. I used to have such control. Used to love working out. I've been at this for a year and now I'm afraid all my hard work will be for nothing. I guess this is my last ditch effort to see if anyone out there knows what this is like and how to get out of it before I end up gaining all my weight back. ???

Do you think the Lexapro is working? I have been taking Wellbutrin for almost a month now and think there is a subtle difference in my mood but haven't had an "omg it changed my life moment" yet like a friend of mine and my boyfriend's mom had. Guess its different for everyone.

emoticon LEPRE875. I'm so sorry you feel you are 'invisible' to your parents. It's heart-wrenching to be in that predicament. Fortunately, this team is a great place to find support, motivation and tons of information. So you don't get overwhelmed, start with small, manageable goals and then work up from there. Whether it is posting on this team's Daily Thread (or any other team) when you feel like emotional eating or drinking all your water for the day, every small, healthy step you take does add up. You are NOT alone.

emoticon to Spark, HMACE77 aka Holly. I'm so glad you returned to Spark. As you know it is a great place to be held accountable and to find support. So you don't get overwhelmed with everything, try to set a couple small goals and then track them under Other Goals. You could also join a couple of the team goals found on the team page. The important thing is to stay connected and to work toward those small goals on a daily basis. This isn't a sprint, but a life-long marathon.

Hi, I'm Holly and I'm returning to SparkPeople after being away for a while. I was diagnosed with depression about two years ago. I really find it hard to motivate myself to exercise or eat well. I know I'll feel better if I do, but it's the actual doing it part where I get stuck. I came back to SparkPeople because I don't really have anyone to hold me accountable on a regular basis, and that's the one thing I loved about this site was connecting with people with similar struggles and goals.

Hi AMBERSMANUEL emoticon and emoticon to the Sparkpeople and the Dealing with Depression Team! Wow! congratulations on losing those 30 pounds. What a great accomplishment. I am so sorry that you are having such a hard time with food allergies and emotional eating. It must be very difficult to change your entire diet and deal with the new boundaries. Keep on coming here. You will find plenty of support and encouragement from many of us. Sending you positive energy and hugs! Take care and God bless, Deb

emoticon AMBERSMANUEL. I'm sorry you are struggling at the moment. Re-learning what to eat after discovering food allergies can not only be difficult, but also frustrating. It's like learning how to eat all over again. The good news is that like your DH, we are here for you. I know you will find a way through this difficult time. Together, with this team, you can do it!

Hi! I just re-joined Sparkpeople after finding out I have multiple food allergies. I have to abstain from eating so many things - it's just crazy!

I'm an emotional eater and though I've dealt with cutting back over the past year in order to lose the 30 pounds I've already lost, having to cut out gluten and wheat (bread, pasta, cake, cookies, pretty much everything I normally eat as comfort food) and then chocolate and cheese as well (allergic to cocoa and milk as well as a multitude of other things) caused me to slide back into a dark place, where I've been for the past week. I feel better physically, but emotionally I'm a mess right now.

This morning I realized I can't do this alone, even with my hubby's help, so I decided to get back on here for additional support. I always feel better when I'm proactive and though I'm a bit shaky still - and probably will be for a while - I already feel a little more hopeful.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

I have been feeling down when i am alone. I have a full life, good job, husband, 2 great kids, but, when i'm alone i feel so hopeless and overwhelmed, i overeat to feel better and have been continuously gaining weight for years. I say to myself that i will go to the gym and when i have time, i feel soo lonely to go there, i just don't go.....,

I have decided to come back to spark and be active on the boards and log my food.

Hi EDEACONTX emoticon emoticon to the Dealing with Depression Team!! I am so very sorry to hear of your recent break up. I'm sure that this is an emotional time for you and I am sure that your hospital stay and depression diagnosis has exacerbated how you are feeling right now. One day at a time is a good approach. It will take some time for your medication to kick in, so please rely on the group if you should need some help dealing with the pressure you must be feeling. We listen and we care. Share as much or as little as you like. You are not alone. We are really glad that you have decided to join us!! Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

Hi, everyone. I'm new. I'm 27 and just recently released from the hospital last week for my asthma and recently rediagnosed with reactive depression. I just broke off my engagement and had him move out. I'm going through a life transition at the moment. I'm a single mom to my 5 year old son. I work two jobs and i'm just trying to get my life back on track. I was just put on lexapro for my depression. We'll see how it goes. Its one day a time for me.

Although I am not new I wanted to say hi. I often am here during the winter months once my SAD kicks in and leave the team in Spring/Summer when I am feeling like myself again.
I am trying to focus on eating well and exercising this winter to help keep the depression at bay. I've had SAD since winter of 2006, but didn't know that is what it was for a few years. I love this group and how supportive they are!

Hi everyone, I'm Jennifer. I'm 26 and I've been struggling with depression and weight issues for quite some time now. I'm a nurse who works the night shift, so my schedule doesn't really help mood or losing weight as I tend to eat when I'm bored. However, my doctor suggested social media or some type of online support group as a way to keep me on track for losing weight. I've got about 50 pounds before I hit my goal weight and Iove the holiday sweets, so I've got my work cut out for me. My current goal is to lose 10 pounds before my next doctor appointment in January. I've got exactly two months and I'll definitely need the support to do it.

Hi everyone, my name is Jan and I'm from Washington, DC. I've been a member of the SparkPeople.com team since February 2014; and, so far, have lost 15lbs. My weight has gone up and down since being a member and I am working to become more active within the community. Thanks,

thanks, Taisiakat. I do have a hobby I picked up a year ago and enjoyed. I make jewelry. I make my own polymer clay beads and use them with crystals and charms to make bracelets and earrings. I had lost interest for a few months...too distracted by everything, but I've started up again and am feeling better about it. There for a while after mom died I spent all my spare time staring at the TV, usually watching "Criminal Minds"! I can now profile serial killers with the best of them!

Thanks, Debteveldahl. It IS hard losing a parent. Lost my dad 12 years ago today. It really hit me on my birthday last week that I am now a 55-year-old orphan! I think it's taken me longer to cope with mom's passing because I didn't have time to grieve since I basically started moving residences the week after she died...the packing, disposing, then a month later unpacking and settling, getting used to being on my own again after 8 years with mom. My house is in a town only 8 miles away, so I at least have the same job, just a new area. It's all just waited until now to jump up and bite me!

Welcome WhichWitch - love your nym. Life does tend to throw us some nasty curve balls at times. I am sorry for the loss of your Mom. I can't imagine (well I try not to) what I would do without my Mom. I don't know much more to say, other than - you're not alone with your depression, or loss.

Do you have any hobbies?

Hi WHICHWITCH emoticon emoticon to the Dealing with Depression Team. I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Mom. I lost my Dad in January of this year too. It is a bitter pill to swallow and it seems as if the grief will never go away. Moving to a new area has to be hard to deal with as well. Having only gained 7 pounds is a phenomenal achievement. Good for you. I'm sure that your new home is feeling more and more comfortable every day. Please stay in touch with the group. We love learning about your progress and celebrating your successes with you. We do listen and we do care, so please do share often. We are really glad that you have decided to join us!! Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

Dear Whichwitch,
Welcome to a wonderful group of supporters. There's a lot of love here with this group of course it won't replace that love you got from your Mom. You've been through a lot. Allow your body and mind to heal. Try some meditation. Not only are you grieving your Mom but your old neighbors and your old town and your old routines. Try to look at this as a celebration of your Mom's life. As you remove her things from your life and downsize think about donating those things and the celebration it will bring to someone who can use those things. That those things are getting a new purpose, a new life. Just like you! You always will have the memories of your Mom and know that your Mom is always around you. If you smell her or you happen to see something that reminds you of her that means she probably around you in that moment. I hope this helps. I gained 50 pounds after my sister died. I still miss her but I know that she is happy and that she is near me often.

emoticon to the team, WHICHWITCH. My heart goes out to you over the loss of Mom. You certainly were run through the ringer this year. Death is hard enough, but then having to move, sort belongings, get accustomed to a new place, neighborhood, town.... Wow! That's enough to make anyone stress eat without the added complications of depression.. You have done so well to have only gained 7 pounds.

Know this team is here for you and want to help you succeeded. You are NOT alone on this journey.

Hi...I'm new to Sparkpeople but not to depression. I've been dealing with it for over 30 years. I had gotten better the past few years, down to maybe 1 bad day a month and then getting better by evening. But these past 6 months have just knocked me over. My 90 year old mom who lived with me died in May. She died on a Monday and my offer was accepted on a house the next Saturday! The closing was in June and I moved in July after having to pack up and get rid of half our belongings. It's hard enough to do when you're not grieving, but this just paralyzed me! My house is half the size of our old apartment! Don't get me wrong...I love it...but disposing of mom's things so quickly was hard, and moving was hard, and I never really got to sit down and grieve. Now I feel like I should be happy, but I just can't get there from here. I miss her, and even though I love my new town, I miss my old neighbors. And on top of that I've gained 7 lbs just stress eating. I'm trying to pull myself together...that's why I'm here. So Hi...it's good to find others who understand what I'm going through!

Hi Julie,
Thank you for you sweet and tender story you shared with me. My daughter is going to talk therapy. There's so much going on now a days for a 13 year old. She's a child that doesn't follow what the popular crowd think or does and that makes her pretty much a loner. She has some friends, but the majority of the kids in school look at her as an outcast. Because she is my only child I try to give her what ever she wants within reason but sometimes it's like she tries to deliberately make herself stand out, different from all the other kids. I don't know if it's for attention or because her thinking and creativity beats to a different drummer.

She questioned my love for her because I raise my voice. I get angry now and then and my voice elevates in volume. I use to hold the anger in and drink to avoid dealing with the emotions and depression from not dealing with the emotion. Now being sober for over 5 years I handle and deal with my emotions and that means sometimes raising my voice at my loved ones. I told her I love her with all my heart and I am a work in progress ( I still go to counseling) and that I will work on the yelling.

One thing I'm not doing is feeding my emotions with the food. I've done that to long. I've set so many bad examples for my daughter with food and alcohol. Thank you all for the support and prayers. You all are angels helping me through this difficult time.

Hi Healthyway14,

My name is Julie, and I'm so sorry about what you are dealing with. Can I share a little story with you? I have a great friend. Her daughter, at a young age of like 14, started acting so strange. Her parents were finding inapproprit images on her cell phone, she would lock herself in her room for no reason, she told her mother, quite loudly, "I hate you." It was desperate times.

Soon her parents started noticing cut wounds on her arms. She had starting cutting with her "boyfriend" so that it would bring them together. (Bunch of crap) However, my friend, like you, did not give up. She took her to the doctor and with the use of medications and the doctor's ear, she slowly, i mean s l o w l y got better and better. Today she is in her second year at university. She is one of the bravest women I know and I am so proud of her, and also her parents. Mine would have had me at the doorstep.

Keep on doing what you are doing. Is she going for talk therapy as well? She does sound like she really doesn't want to let you guys down. Can you take her out of school for a day and do something really impulsive (shopping, a movie, a walk in t he forest, a project) together. That's what I do with my kids when I see them stressing.

I am NO child expert here, nor am I a really great mom, in fact I've "dropped the basket" more than a few times. But, I think we can all help each other. I'm so, so, so glad she prays, God will give her strength. I am rooting for you and your journey on SparkPeoople but mostly, to be honest, to be able to know that your daughter is all right.

Be well, Julie emoticon

Hi Deb! Thanks for the well wishes. I've been doing the chair exercises and they have encouraged me to go back to water aerobics but to do the low impact version tomorrow. Today has been interesting. I had to take my daughter back to her counselor because she started cutting herself. She told us it was due to her being bullied at school and she was, but the counselor informed me it's also because she's sad. She 's sad because she feels like she can't please my husband and I. I can't reassure her enough but it seems to fall on deaf ears sometimes. I pray God will intercede and help her. I pray that God will heal her sadness before He heals me. I told her to pray and she said she would. The day started out so good and now I have so much anxiety over my daughter. I have to e- mail her psychiatrist to see if he needs to adjust her medicine or if he wants to see her. At least I don't want to eat to feed the anxiety. So I think I'll bead tonight! Thanks Deb! Thanks Mrs Toad and feel better Heartmend!

Hi HEALTHYWAY14 emoticon emoticon to the Dealing with Depression Team!! It is nice to meet you and to know that you have embarked on the same journey that we all embrace. You must be a very special and creative person to work for the County Parks and Recreation Department teaching beading and crafts. How satisfying that must be for you. I am so sorry that you have injured your foot and wish you a speedy recovery. Until then perhaps some chair exercises would help you stay in the exercise loop. The Sparkpeople has many videos to pick from. Please post often, so that we can offer you the support and encouragement you deserve as you work towards your goals. We are really excited that you have decided to join us!! Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

emoticon to the team, HEALTHYWAY14. This team is a great place to find motivation and support any day of the week. Winter is a difficult for many of this team so you are NOT alone in this struggle. Feel free to join us on the Daily Thread. It is a great place to join the conversation or just peruse the posts. Also, I'm so sorry to hear about the stress fracture in your foot. Whatever you do, follow your doctor's directions about exercise and general walking. You certainly don't want to make the situation any worse!

I joined the team in April but didn't introduce myself until now. I 've turned my thinking around and became motivated to lose the weight. Today is a beautiful day except for the wind which makes it a little cold. I hate that I wake up and it's dark. This is definitely not my favorite time of the year despite the beauty in nature. I tend to lose a lot of sleep this time of the year. I'm so thankful for sparkpeople and all the wonderful friends that support me through this journey.
