Hi! My name is Olga! I just discovered SP this week and am so glad I did. I have been suffering from depression since my pre-teen years, but did not get the official diagnosis until about the time I turned 24. I tried a variety of medications and settled on Cytalopram quite a few years ago. I cannot stress enough how the right medication changes the life of a person with depression! I don't know what I would do without it!

emoticon to the team, AURORADREAMER aka Kristi. I'm so sorry you are struggling with depression. Have you talked to your doctor about this? If not, it might be worth the call. Feel free to be a lurker or a participant on any of our threads. The Daily thread gets a lot of traffic and is full of motivation and support. In the meantime, I don't know if you have seen this, but here is a video that explains the food tracker. It may or may not help you. You are NOT alone.

Hello. I will probably be very lurky on here, but I will try to write more.

I don't know how long I have had depression, but not till recently did I fall into a severe depression. Most of my depression roots from a low self-esteem and relationship woes. I have major anxiety also contributing.

I currently live in Japan, and have trouble tracking my calories. So I have not been active lately on SP. Hopefully I can figure out how to do tracking better.

My goals are to be healthier emotionally. I want to be able to look in a mirror and be proud of who I am and love myself. Currently I can not see it, but I know there is some reason to love myself.

Sorry for the long post. Nice to meet everyone

emoticon to the team, LATINRITELADY79 aka Caroline. I'm so sorry to hear you have struggled with depression for so long and PTSD after the delivery of each of your children. What a struggle you have had! The good news is that now is the time for you! What better gift can you give to your 6 children than the gift of a healthy mommy. This journey is about taking time for you to become healthier. Small goals that you can work toward is a great start. A 10 minute walk with your older kids or a game of tag with all of the kids will help you get started. Know that we are here to help you succeed. Lean on the team for support and motivation!

emoticon to the team, S_GROVE aka Stephanie. I'm so glad you found Spark. This is a great place to find a healthier way of life. Remember, this is not a sprint, but a marathon! Each and every healthier choice we make no matter how small really does matter. If you haven't already, you might want to set some small goals that you can track under the "Other Goals" section here on Spark. This might help you "see" what you are able to do consistently and what you struggle with. Whatever you decide, you are not alone on this journey to a healthier you.

emoticon back, JOFESTER. You are so right! Eating healthier and exercising regularly can affect the way we feel. Even 10 minutes of walking outside can change our moods for the better and add a bit of vitamin D from the sunlight. This being said, I'm so sorry that you are struggling. You can get back to where you were 6 years ago, but it takes time, patience and many healthier choices. If you haven't already, talk to your doctor about your plans. Many times they can and will help you set up some small, intermediate and long term goals as well as help you monitor your health along the way. In the meantime, we are here for you.

Hi, I'm Caroline... I live in North Dakota... I have severe depression... Most likely left over PPD after the birth of my twins that was untreated... I've had PPD after every birth and Post Partum Psychosis after my oldest was born... I just kept telling myself it just twins, or it will improve when school starts again, etc... Always an excuse... I had depression in my pre-teens but went to a therpist but never took medicine... I was on Zoloft after my oldest was born, didn't need any medicine after my 2nd and 3rd child births, just visited a psychologist to 'talk' for a couple months... I tried Prozac after my 4th was born, since seeing a psychologist wasn't enough, and was on it till the 2nd trimester pregnancy of my twins (born July 2010)... I finally went back to the doctor, stopped making excuse and was put on Prozac again in Aug 2011 till Aug/Sept? 2012... I am starting Celexa Feb 1, 2013... I'm hoping to lose 40-50 lbs or more!

Thanks for all who have emoticon me so far in other threads in this forum...

PS: Yes, your math is right... If you were counting children... I'm the mother of 6... I'm not even 35... emoticon

Hi everyone,
My name is Stephanie and I am from central Pennsylvania. I suffer from mild chronic depression - which I can't remember not ever having. There has GOT to be something that gets my endorphins going. I do not take any medication, and I am hoping to find the motivation and ambition to help myself naturally.
My goal is to lose approximately 18-20 pounds and to help myself create a better sense of well-being than what it is now.
Good luck everyone and keep on plugging.

Hi Debbie! I I am just returning from a long time away from here. I suffer from depression and I find that what I eat and how much or how little I exercise has a big effect on my depression. I do have to take meds after having suffered an extreme chronic episode. But the other things- like eating the right stuff and exercising make me feel much more confident and secure.

emoticon to the team, FISHER011 aka Debbie. I'm so sorry to hear that you are struggling with your depression and bipolar. (I see you haven't joined a bipolar team. Did you know that there are bipolar teams on SP as well? Go to the Community link and then select SparkTeams and do a search.) One thing that is for sure around here. You are NOT alone. Our team alone has many, many threads where you can go to vent, share, cry, celebrate or simply peruse. It is all about what you need and want. Hang in there. We are here for you.

Hi from California! My name is Debbie & I am new to this team emoticon
I've been struggling with my depression end of my bipolar for about 6 months now.
As my health has not been the best lately, I thought I was just tired all the time.
After reading articles on SP, I've been getting more educated & am looking for a new DR & support from others.I have come to realize I can't do this alone anymore-it doesn't work emoticon
I love SP & am looking forward to sharing & caring with you all!

emoticon back to the team, KASEY51. I'm so glad you are back and that you had the courage to post a bit about yourself. You are on the way to success! The information you posted for Jessica is spot on. Sometimes we need to rely on others until we have the strength to do things alone. That is the power of support and yes, it can be found here on Spark as well. Like I told Lynn, read through and/or post on our Daily thread. There is a lot of traffic there and a whole lot of support, motivation and care to be gleaned by our fellow Sparkers.

emoticon to the team, RYLEERAYE aka Rylee. You are one busy lady with your two kids! Those demands would keep anyone running. However, now is the time for you! You can only give the best when you are at your best. Perhaps setting a couple small goals to work on would be a good place to start. It allows you time to get to know SP, but also will help keep you from getting overwhelmed with yet another aspect you have added to your life. Whatever you decide, stay connected with those you love and your teammates here on Spark.

emoticon to the team, JESSICAKALEY. I'm so sorry you are having such a difficult day and week. Spark is all about support and motivation when times are difficult. As you can see, there are many people out here wanting to see you overcome this depression. If there is anything we can do just let us know. Would you consider telling your daughter about your struggles? Quite possibly she knows more than you think and this could be a good bonding experience for both of you.

Hi, Jessica. I don't know quite what to say because I suffer the same way. What has really helped me is to have my daughter-in-law, Gina, to go places with me. Then, I don't get so anxious. I have been able to go out a bit on my own now, but it's not comfortable. Is there anyone to go to the store and the salon with you? Deep breathing exercises can be very useful. How are you feeling about your daughter's visit? Overwhelmed? If you just take one thing at a time - the salon and then the store - you'll start to feel less overwhelmed and won't feel so bad about how you're going to appear to your daughter. I know she wants whats best for you. If she's anything like my son, she just wants you to be active and outgoing, and making healthy choices. Take care.

Hi. I'm a renewed member. The first time I was afraid to go on the forum (anxiety!!!!!). I'm more comfortable now and am looking forward to making some healthy connections. I am 62 (but look much younger ha-ha) and am semi-retired. I've been on unemployment for 1 1/2 years, so I'm pretty stagnate. I just moved from San Diego to a rural community to share a house with my son, Daniel, and my daughter-in-law, Gina. I'm starting to do better. In San Diego, I'd become pretty much agoraphobic and so depressed. I gained a lot of weight. My biggest obstacle is that I have all the resources one could want (exercise dvd's, a bicycle, workout clothes, a sweet little pug to walk - but I am paralyzed. It is soooo hard to get anything done. I'm embarrassed to go out because of my weight. If I could just do a little each day. Please help!! Thanks for being here.

Hi, Jessica. Wish Id seen your post earlier. I hope you pulled yourself out the door and got your hair cut! Ive been so low that I couldn't even get out of bed but my kids could make me. Itd make me mad but I would get out of bed. Some times Id even smile. I know it hurts to even move right now but try.
You didnt ask for my opinion but Im giving it to you anyway. Dont hide this from your daughter. Children sense when things arent right. Better she know whats going on than to assume you are angry with her.
Check in here often so people can help support you while your down.

Hi! I'm Rylee. I'm 28 and I'm a mother of 2, a rambunctious 7 year old son and an adorably mischievous 17 month old daughter. Since being off work the last 3 months the number on the scale just keeps creeping higher and higher and my clothes get more and more snugly. I've gotten to the point where I'm like, ok, time to go back to work just to shed these pounds... but i'd really like to put some effort into something a little larger than that like a whole lifestyle change. So here I am. I know the basics of what to do and how to lose the weight and stay healthy, my problem is getting off my jiggly butt and actually doing it! So here's to hoping this brings me the accountability I need and hopefully a few new friends in the process!

There's my post to another introductory board but I wanted to add a little onto this one. I suffered severe depression for about 5 years after my dad died when I was a senior in high school. It really messed me up for awhile. When I finally broke out of that, oh man, it was like the sun coming up after years of darkness, the most beautiful feeling I can't even attempt to describe. Since I have been desperate to not fall into the grips of depression again. Afterall, it's an endless cycle once you get in. As soon as I feel it coming on, which usually takes a few days to a week, I snap myself out of that crud as quickly as possible. It's not easy, but it's a must. So here's to hoping I can be there to help someone else learn to do that for themselves, and of course for some help when I feel myself slipping! =)

emoticon back to SP, BESTTHINGEVERJE aka Jenna. I'm so glad you are seeing a professional about your medical issues. You have a lot going on. Try to set some small goals to help you replace some of your old, unhealthy habits. For example, replacing your drinks with water or getting 10 minutes of exercise a day. Also it helps to track them under "Other Goals" (found under "My Trackers") so you can watch your streak grow day to day. Whatever you decide, stay connected to your teams. Hi, I'm Kelly, I've been with SP for awhile but took a long break. Now I'm back and am struggling to get my depression back under control. I seem to need stronger and higher dosages of all my meds. FRUSTRATING. I would like to see the scale move in the opposite direction again. Maybe that will be the turning point that I so desperately need. Anyway, thanks for letting me share.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Ty everyone for the welcome and understanding. I have had a good day today, perhaps due to the fact, I finally went through the last of my fathers belonging. I also did crafts with the kids and actually laughed with my husband. I forgot what that was like :) Also to everyone else WELCOME :)

Still trying to figure out this blog thing....

Hello Everyone! My name is April and I have also been struggling with depression and anxiety since I was a child. I think where it all started was with my dad. I was always into sports and danced most of my life (tap, jazz, ballet and modern) and I was always quite fit. For some reason, and I still cannot really figure out why, my dad would suggest that I should watch what I was eating and kept telling me that I should think about losing a few pounds. Being a young girl, I took it to heart and ended up with a crazy weight complex. My life has had many ups and many downs but I find myself in a good place where I want to take the next steps to taking control of my weight once and for all. I hope I can be a good listener and motivator to you all, and I hope I will learn lots from you. Thank you for being in this group!

Welcome, Jenna & Molly!

I know that it takes a lot of energy and work (at least that is how I feel) to be physically healthier, especially when you're just starting out, but for me being conscientious about my food & exercise also helps manage my depression by improving my energy and taking the edge off of my anxiety.

Hi, I'm new and have been dealing with depression since I was in middle school, but it had gotten particularly bad in the past couple of years. But then a couple of months ago I had such a drastic turnaround and have actually been feeling happy and motivated enough to try to get physically healthier too. Fingers crossed that it lasts!

my name is Jenna.. ive been dealing with being overweight for most of my life. when i was a youngin i remember going to the local donut shop with my grandma and eating 3 donuts and hot chocolate.. i also remember being allowed to eat whatever i wanted when i was young.

i am actually bipolar, but i cant remember how to search for another team on here. but i mean depression is definatly a part of bipolar.. in a big way! im emotionally stable now.. took a long road but im there! (at least my therapist says so! lol)

i would also like to have one of those tracker thingies people have at the bottom or on their page but i dont know how to do that either.. i guess i need a mentor? lol

my sister is getting married next year and i hope to drop alot of weight by then.. i mean, i have a little over a year!

im going to the doc next week to learn more about lap band surgery..

being bipolar and taking all those meds at night makes me hungry. :(

ok as you can probably tell, my mind wanders haha.

this is it for now. im going to go take a walk soon! even tho its like 20 degrees outside! yuck!

Hi all, I'm Mel. I joined the group a long time ago, but this is my first post here. I'm 26 and have suffered from chronic depression since childhood. Unfortunately, being from a country which is a couple of decades behind in terms of mental health awareness, I didn't have any support growing up.

For the last 7 years (around the time I moved to the UK) doctors and psychiatrists have put me on different antidepressants, to finally conclude (last week) that I am practically immune to them. So I am currently on Mirtazapine, not so much for depression but to help me sleep - the side effects being that I'm always drowsy and extremely hungry, no matter how much I eat.

I actually have a diagnosis of BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), but since I was diagnosed 2 years ago, it's become a label which -ironically- made people in my life understand me better, but made mental health workers put me at the bottom of their priority list. After two years of being officially in the care of the local mental health team, I am actually worse.

I will be moving to Australia in a month, and hoping that I'm luckier with the mental health services roulette than I was here. I know the move will help in other aspects of my health (I have FMS and PCOS too), so my life is bound to improve. I am 26 years old and still waiting for my life to start. I have been waiting for my mental health problems to disappear so that I can start living. What I really need is to learn to live with -and in spite of- my mental health problems.

Sorry for the lenghty introduction. I'm happy to have joined, and hope I can fit in.

Hi,
Just wanted you to know that I am facing the same things. I lost both my parents a while ago but still feel the sadness and loneliness that comes with that. Right now it is all I can do to get through the day.. I just want to stay in bed. My doc increased my depression med yesterday so I will see how that goes. As far as the eating at night goes eat healthy stuff. Fruits or yogurt are good. The yogurt will satisfy the need then just go to bed and pray.
good luck,
Jerry

emoticon to the team, DOLPHINSIMBA. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of both your father and your uncle. My heart goes out to you. No wonder you have no motivation! You are grieving on so many different levels. Give yourself time to work through the grief. For now, set one or two small goals. (Like getting all your water for the day or eating 2 freggies each day) That might be all you can handle at the moment. Know we are here as you move the grief process offering motivation, support and friendship.

Hello everyone. I have been with spark for awhile, but have not done much with it till now. I am really trying to focus on getting better health wise, physically and mentally. I have been having a rough go lately and am finding it very hard to be motivated. I have the want, but not the drive. My father was diagnosed with Cancer in october of 2012. While he was going through that my uncle passed away from a heart attack and then my father just passed away here on December 29, 2012. All though I feel for the most part I am doing ok with everything, I still find that all I want to do is sleep and have little to no energy. The simplest tasks wear me down. I also seem to be wanting to eat late at night because that's the time I think about my dad, when everythings quite and there is nothing to preoccupy my mind. Does anyone here have any suggestions on how to get motivated and stay that way?

Hello Team,
New here. Been battling depression since the death of my husband just a few weeks after the death of my father. Antidepressants have not helped, in fact, they made things worse. I am productive, becoming more active, but I still hate my life. Something I have determined to work diligently on this year!

Hi, Diana!

Welcome. People who say hurtful things are small and try to make others feel small. You are so right in ignoring them. I wish you luck in that endevor. Hopefully you will find the support you need here.
