Hello Troopergal, I am from WA state and have dispatched for almost 10 years. i started as a volunteer firefighter before this and i actually got a fire/science degree in college and was planning to have a career in firefighting. I am also an emt. The only thing that has held me back from my FF career is my weight, i still did the physicals and failed everytime..paid lots of money too because they use public safety testing up here. This past year i have finally decided i will give up my EMT license because I am not using it and not really testing anymore..sad, i know. Maybe when i get back to my goal weight and fit I might try again. But shift work and busy life has really caused a lot of medical and obesity problems. I am finally at a point where i have had enough and i eating bad and I am exercising harder than I ever had before. Its a long journey for me but i hope i can keep it up. Good luck and glad we can support eachother.

That sounds more like here. Take a bite, answer phone, take a bite, answer radio, page out rescue, take a bite, handle rescue radio traffic, oh man! my foods cold and gross! Start over - lol

Our break room is the least used room in the building ... at least by the dispatchers. I've never seen a dispatcher take a break in there, but the officers like to use it for their meals. We eat ours at the console, taking small bites so people can understand us when we answer the phone right after taking a bite. We are supposed to get a 30 minute meal break, but just try to take it sometime ... hah!

Welcome to the team!

Oh - and I definately ENVY those of you who GET breaks! We DON'T, not at all. We come in, work our 8 hours, and go home.
If it's a busy night, you might not get a chance to eat, let alone fill your water. But most nights, it's ok. We have a full kitchen (county jail is part of our job, too - we cook for the inmates).

I usually keep yogurt & a bag of 2% cheese in the frig, a couple frozen meals and a bag of frozen veggies in the freezer (some meals purchased, some made at home and froze). And in my locker I keep Crystal Light singles, peanut butter, a can of soup, and some odds and ends.

Hi Amber ... emoticon to the 9-1-1 Weight Loss Losers team. Glad to have you with us! We all share the same challenges ... shift work, fast food, much stress, long hours sitting on our ever broadening behinds.

The best thing I ever did for myself was cutting out fast food. I take the time to pack my lunch every day now instead of going to Wendy's for a double bacon cheeseburger, fries and diet coke ... why did I even bother with the DIET coke? If it doesn't get packed in my lunch bag I don't eat it during my shift.

I'm on permanent 3 - 11 shift, so my family is asleep when I get home, and I'm asleep when they leave in the morning. Since I rarely see them, let alone share meals with them, I decided to try Nutrisystem. The meals are perfect for one, easy to pack in my lunch bag and easy to prepare at work (we have a fridge and microwave in our break room). Although NS works well for me because I eat my meals alone, I can certainly see where it would not work as well for a person who has the opportunity to dine with their family on a regular basis.

Whatever meal plan you come up with, I certainly wish you luck in meeting your weight loss goals.

Hello all~
My name is Amber and I'm a radio operator for the Highway Patrol. I've been with them 2 years and previously have worked as a dispatcher with a local Sheriff's Dept and a PD. I have also been a FF/EMT. As we all know, the rotating shifts, few days off and need for food fast does not help with weight loss so I'm here to learn and chat and get to know other dispatchers and their secrets of weight loss. I am tired of being tired...and sick of being that girl that no one looks twice at. So, here I am and willing to work my @ss off to get back in the game. Can't wait to meet you all!!
Amber
