I can imagine what it would get me! Not a pat on the back - either. For such a small agency, there sure is a lot of drama.

I like that title, Diva's from Days! Fits here too. Although, everyone has to pitch in, they aren't immune. We are too small. And of course, with all the babies coming and the events that go with it - I'm not the most popular evening worker at the moment.

Primarily at me, but really at all the dispatchers who are unhappy with the shift they were assigned to and don't have the seniority to escape from. It wouldn't be as bad if the Diva's from Days were more cooperative about covering shifts, or even a couple hours of a shift when we want some time off to attend a meeting, band concert, parent/teacher conferences, etc. But three of the four day shift dispatchers refuse to cover and that leaves those of us on afternoons missing out on a lot of things we want to do. Well, not for this kid anymore!

Sounds like we were living the same life, Dawn. After three years, and looking at a fourth year of that routine I had enough. Afternoon shift was always my favorite shift when we rotated ... I liked the action (it's our busiest shift) and the diversity of calls. But I never wanted to work the shift permanently. I told the chief I thought some of the personal sacrifice needed to be spread around to which the comm center supervisor who worked the day shift replied that she didn't want to be separated from her family either. A few days later a sign appeared in dispatch ... "Just Suck it Up and Do it" (see my spark page). It seems I was the only one who was supposed to suck it up ... the dispatcher in the picture is even a redhead!

Welcome to the team. It's been kind of quiet around here lately.
Our agency is very (and I mean VERY) small. I work solo, 4-midnight Thursday - Monday.
As far as not having time with the family, there are times I really kick myself for not taking the day shift opening when it was offered to me. I'm just not a morning person, and I also didn't feel that I was qualified to take that shift on at the time. Well, they hired someone new, with absolutely no experience to take that shift. So much for thinking I was under-qualified! If a day shift should again become available, I'll be on top of it. Seems like everyone else has a life but me. I get up, go to work, come home - unwind alone since the rest of the world is asleep - then start all over again.

Maybe your input will help liven the team up a bit :)

TERRIEJO53,

I also worked rotating shifts for the first 3 years then we went to straight 10 hour shifts. I did midnights for 8 years starting with 10 hr and 12 hr shifts. I have been on days for the last 8 years. We had a deputy killed in a car accident on my shift when I was still on the night shift, after that I, along with a sheriff deputy, attempted to get a Critical Incident Debriefing team organized but as we are a rural area with small departments, and having limited resources and no support from our departments it didn't happen. I was a little disappointed at the time but aquire a lot of good info and made contacts with some good teams that will respond if we need them.

Now I am a CTO and enjoy training new dispatchers. I was looking forward to retirement in a couple of years but my husband had a couple of heart attacks 2 1/2 years ago so I am going to have to work about 6 years longer than I originally planned so we can afford for him to retire when I do. Although if the economy doesn't come around I may have to work forever. emoticon

emoticon Mary ... emoticon to the 911 Weight Loss Loser's team. It's nice to have you with us. I dispatched for 13.5 years, but left my job last month. When I started the dispatchers worked rotating shifts. Three years ago we went to permanent shifts and as the dispatch shift supervisor with the least amount of seniority I got stuck on afternoons. After three years of no family or social life I threw in the towel. Although I loved my job I just couldn't go on. I hit burnout and without the support of friends and family (since I never saw them) I started resenting the fact that I had no family or social life while the other two dispatch supervisors were home with their families every evening and could attend social functions any time they wanted.

I did not make a complete break from the department though. I am certified in Critical Incident Stress Management and will continue to assist with debriefings for dispatchers in North Dakota. I am also thinking about joining the Sheriff's Reserve, just to keep active in law enforcement.

Hi, Browsing the teams and found a 911dispatcher team thought it would be fun to talk to dispatchers from other areas. I am in Michigan, I have been dispatching for 20 years, and I can't imagine doing anything else. I am a CTO and I really enjoy teaching new dispatchers and seeing them grow and achieve their goals as dispatchers. emoticon
