G'day everyone,

I have just joined this group after a wonderful first cruise to New Zealand and stacking on the weight. With an important meeting in late April I have a simple goal of losing 0.75kg per week using LCHF and curbing my wine and chocolate intake.

This month's goal (well, for a week or so anyway) is to slide from 85.2kg to 84.2kg - wish me luck!

Wow,,,, the last post in this topic was one year ago...
Noticed others here near my age,,, not sure if you are still around.
I had done well on Spark 4 years ago and then with stress and letting food addiction take over, gained all back and then some!
Well, I'm now on Ideal Protein and have started losing, but this time, I'm joining the low carb groups to learn what I have to do for the rest of my life! Not going through this again!!
I'm also 75,,, retired (partially) RN (work part time in a nursing home -- I call it my retirement job), and have been on more "diets" than I want to admit, but really want this weight loss season to be my last.
Love the thought of celebration days, but I actually call them "life happens" -- when I take my grandkids out to eat or have some special event, where I don't have control over the menu... Then I have just made wise choices and enjoyed every bite.
I am a sugarholic.... I'm sure.... one bite and I'm like on a slippery slope. So, for now, none of my food intake contains sugar. I do use Stevia for sweetener in coffee and tea and some no carb muffins.
Will be interested to see how many are active on this team... Looks like a good team!

I have celebration days built into my eating plan. It suits me very well because since I started doing this I no longer feel depreived. I dont call them cheat days because they are not cheating. They are celebrating that at last I have found a way of eating that allows me to forget about food for most of the time. That is wonderful for me.

Low carb for 1 meal or sometimes 2 gets rid of any craving I might activate on my celebration day.

Right now having had a celebration Christmas. :) I am sticking to my cycling without the celebration days until I get back to my base maintenance weight.

The reason I have a Pleasure Day of eating once a week, that is within reason, is to counteract the times in my life when I have been so poverty-stricken that there was no food. It is an emotional mending step for me that keeps me on my eating plan the rest of the week. But I am not eating too much differently on my Pleasure Days because then I would not feel well afterwards. I might have a liverwurst sandwich with a dill pickle and 20 Fritos; or a banana milk shake using sugar free ice cream...that sort of thing.

This was a thread I started back a few months when I wanted to lose the Christmas weight I had gained. It worked I lost it. :o)

So happy to see your smiling face on our team pages.

Yes the low carb is great for keeping the diabetes in check.
I did try fb for a while, but just not my scene. I am happy to chat to you any time you like.

I lost between 50 and 60 pounds. Was planning on losing a whole lot more, but then decided at age 75 I would prefer to enjoy more of the food I love, seeing as how doc is happy with me, bp and diabetes numbers are all good maintenance seemed like a good idea.. I have been doing that for over a year now. I do go up and down a bit, but come back to my base maintenance line. Something I have never been able to do before.

I would eat as many carbs as I was able to without gaining and also keeping my bp and diabetes numbers in check. Alas mine does seem to be about 20 a day. However I do have celebration days, and sometimes a week or more and then get right back on the lower carbs to bring me back down to where I want to be. I mix up the low cal and low carbs days. Some people do both at the same time. That would be too hard for me. I prefer to have low cals days when I eat mainly fruit and veges and then low carb days when I focus on the protein.
Like you I love bacon and eggs in a variety of way for breakfast. I enjoy eggs in every which way. I sometimes scramble them with cooked cauliflower and cheese. Love it cold. :o)

Hi Wispy, I'm feeling a little better seeing that someone else is doing good on a not so extremely low carb diet. I'm a retired RN after over 34 years and I do know that keeping carbs low doesn't raise your blood sugar SO YOU DON'T GET HUNGRY, sorry, two fingers ;-) I've been sticking to eggs and bacon no toast for breakfast and my appetite is gone until @ 1-2 pm and drinking a lot of water. How much weight have you lost? Also there's a book that cycles carbs called the Happy Hormone, a lot of older women on FB love it. I have learned so much on FB although my daughter put me on it kicking and screaming but I have so many friends around my age. I'm glad to know you, because sometimes I need someone to talk too on the journey.

Hi honey, no I do not have a book, but I am very familiar with both systems seeing as I have been on one diet or another all my life.

Since joining Spark, I have tried several plans in order to find one that suits me and I can live with permanently. I am 75, so permanently may not be all that long. :o) I have been maintaining for the last year (5 years in Spark) on the low cal low carb cycling method.

There are several different varieties of this. I chose one that allows me to eat fruit and veges on some days because I enjoy both and love eating them.

If you would like to chat about it, or anything else please just keep posting. I am happy to meet you.

I know low carbs keeps my blood sugar down so I don't get hungry but I can't seem to do too low anymore sense I'm 67 years old now. Tell me Betsy, how are you doing? This has got to be my new way of eating and I need help from other members on this one. Thanks

Happy belated birthday Sharon. I always enjoys myself on celebration days.

Had a really good week. Have lost another pound. Just one more to go then I can get back to my usual maintenance eating. Man I miss those great steak and lamb meals. Such a tiny amount of protein on low cal. But I am surviving and enjoying the results and the food is fine. Just not enough of it for me. :o)

Two days is great Betsy. It is just one day at a time for all of us, whether we have just started or being going for ages. It is always today I have to deal with.

I have had a good low cal/low carb week. And I am also pleased. Today is day 7 for me and I my weigh in day is tomorrow morning. I feel as if my legs are rather swollen though so this is most likely fluid - so I may not weigh in until my next doctors visit.
I have been doing a lot of energetic things this week, gardening and also inside the house and it is very hot here so the swelling might be due to those things.

In any event as long as I keep eating within my calorir/carb limit I know things will be going according to plan.

Having tomato soup for lunch and curried eggs for dinner (I will most likely only use the whites tonight as I want it to be low cal as well as low carb. I love curry.
Am also going to make a jelly for evening snacking. :o)

Have a good day Betsy.

Well ladies, I have done 2 days, (yes, I know, only 2 days) of lower carb. between 50 and 100. I am sticking with it a little better, I am still too high in the fats, but getting better. I seem content with the meals I am preparing and am not dizzy nor headachy, so maybe I'm on to something here. It's still very early on, but I am reading the South Beach Book, and trying very hard to follow some of your suggestions. Thanks for the help!

Oh Betsy, we are all here to help one another. I don't know where I would be by now with regard to my eating if I had not found kindness and support on this site.

There are some wonderful teams and helpful people.

Anything else we can do just ask.

Hugs Wispy.

you guys have been awesome? You have answered some of my questions, and I am going to attempt to change my menu tracker "stuff" here on spark, I'm not so good with computer, so this should be an experience! lol I have looked at the "Atkins" but not on here, although menu ideas and such would be helpful. I purchased the south beach diet book today. I am feeling a bit better about this.........thank you for the help emoticon

Hi there girls,

I also have a bit of a problem with Atkins although it suits many people..As a result I chose a different plan that suits me and my health issues.

I do not use it, but there is a plan called South Beach which is more moderate. You might find that more agreeable. Morticia is the leader and is also a nurse. She is very knowledgeable about food.

My eating plan consists of whole meat, fish, eggs, cheese, vegetables and fruit.

I seldom eat processed or artificial foods. I do not eat a lot of fat.

Vegetables and fruit have sufficient carbs for my daily needs. In fact I have more energy with this way of eating.

On celebration days (when I am eating out), I eat whatever is on offer, but can keep the refined carbs low.

There are carbs present in most natural foods even in some meat and fish.

I have been far healthier since eating whole foods. No longer need blood pressure pills and do not need to go on diabetic meds. I am so grateful for this. I do not like taking meds. Another benefit from the low carb way of eating seems to be that pain caused by internal inflammation is almost nil these days. When I eat refined carbs it returns, so I can only assume that eating fresh whole food helps with reducing the pain.

If was through checking out an eating programme for my personal health issues that got me started on what was appropriate for myself. I go by the lab test results and also how I feel mentally and physically. There are so many theories out there these days about what is the right way of eating and the conflict seems endless.

So wish there was an easy answer. Low glycemic foods do seem to be the best for reducing craving.

Please do keep posting. One way of eating may not work for you, but there are so many others that may be more helpful.

Hugs Wispy

we do need carbs just not so many that we gain weight and get overweight and unhealthy ( diabetes, heart , lung and vascular problems etc. ) I think a lot of people " think " they need 100's of carbs a day , so not true . Also carbs should be good ones that are low glycemic (sp ?) PORTIONS are usually a problem with most of us , small red potato, 2/3 dry cup of pasta i think is the serving size to have , that is not what we usually put on our plate ( that plate that is sooo big now too )
Have you "joined" the Atkins site ? They have menu's to pick from and all the recipes . They will even send you your week of meals to your e-mail and you can print it out . You can edit it on the site to fit your tastes. I have a hard time with fiber but you can eat pretty good on 20-50 carbs a day to lose and then up them ( maybe 75-100 untill you see a gain , then drop back . Not to mention if you make from scratch you will eliminate all the really bad chemicals they use for shelf life ..... Check it out Oh SP has menu to follow too but they don't like it if you go Low cal and VL cal along with low carb ...they always up your calories , whick raises your carbs a lot ....Atkins just lets you pick what you want and adds it up for you . your fiber intake is very important to get 25-35 g a day
I need to Move to lose weight , so i walk when i can depending on the weather . Probably all this is what you already know but guess i felt " chatty " today ...good advice for me to follow too emoticon

I don't understand, it just doesn't make sense to me, the low carb. someone please, please make me understand. I have read 17 day diet, I have read atkins books, it all makes sense until I go to do it, then in my head I need the carbs to be eating healthy. I know it is from the way we were taught, as children, to be well balanced blah, blah, blah. It really does make sense on paper, but when I go to eat that way, I find myself thinking, the "other way" and making bad choices. I thought once I started cycling that this would go away, but no, I think I am doing worse.

I love mac and cheese and would have not thrown it out either. I cant bear to waste to food.

Have to say I got such a shock when I was feeling bloated and had gained (even though I thought it was water), it sure did make me eat carefully this week.

I have lost 3 or 4 lbs - it was fluid I know because the bloating has gone.

We can have a good day today. I fell asleep really early last night and slept right through so did not have any dinner. Not hungry this morning, so will have last nights dinner tonight. xx

Have a good day hon.
