Hi there, a warm welcome to the team.

Yes indeed. It is a question of carb counting. But for each of us it is a different number. Dont know if you are familar with low carb at all, or have any idea of the number you can eat and lose.
It varies greatly from 100 a day to 20 a day or even less. I am a person who cannot handle many carbs and lose weight. I am also diabetic.

The Atkins programme gives a base number to start off which is 20 nett carbs a day. You can tell after a week or two whether you are losing too quickly on that and then just try a few more till you are losing in the way you want.

We are not an Atkins programme here, although some of us follow it.

Ask any questions and we will try to help.

Eliz, I am thinking you must be much more affected by diabetes than I am. I am so sorry that even bread upsets your numbers.

I do use oopsie bread and buns etc. Find they are delightful and no flour or gluten.
I also eat 5 grain bread usually when I do have sarnies. Wonder if that makes a difference. It is the gluten that seems to upset me.

Happy to say when I weighed in this morning I am back down to my base maintenance weight. I so love being here. Did not think it would happen so quickly, but I had a very good low carb low cal week. Sometimes it seems to work more quikcly than others. I had so much fluid when I got back this time, I couldnt believe it. Not sure what did that. Although I did feel my face swell up after eating some snack when we were on the road one day. Maybe that is what did it.

Heres to a good week for us all.

Just one day at a time. I plan those days in and call them celebration days. It does work for me. I don't feel deprived then or guilty. Sometimes I plan them if I know I am going to a celebration of some kind. Other times I just feel like chocolate or sandwiches - my favourite food. :) So I have a celebration and thoroughly enjoy it. Get right back on low carb the next day. Eating a meal or two of pure no carbs (ie meat or fish) I am back on track and the "craving" has gone. Don't know if this works for anyone else, but it is the first time in my life I have actually been able to control my weight.

I am just back from a holiday with my son. I ate whatever I wanted. Had a day or two to adjust when I came back and now a week of low cal/low carb. I will weigh in on my weekly day and hopefully will be closer to my regular maintenance weight. :)

Posting daily and recording my food daily is one of the things that helps me more than anything else. You are doing great.

Well I think dieticians have a different idea of low carb than perhaps Low Carb Eating Plans do.

This is not a bad thing.
The friend I mentioned is doing very well on her diabetic plan with her dietician. She just does not call it low carb, but it is really concerning the no, or very little sugar factor. But she does eat bread and other things that are quite high carb and although she doesnt count carbs, she is losing just fine. Better than me who is a low carb eater/low cal eater.

We all seem to have our own eating patterns. I have to stay really low carb and low cal in order to lose. Slow metabolism I guess. I would love to be able to eat 2000 cals a day but I gain on that.

That is why I started low carb really. I can eat more of the low carb food and not feel hungry all the time. I can maintain on 20 carbs a day and maybe even lose a little.
But I enjoy mixing it with low cal days so that I can get fruit and more veges as a contrast.

My plan is called cycling, although I see they have other names for it nowadays.

Whatever you are doing, it is fine with us. We have no narrow guidelines here that anyone has to follow. One of the reasons I love this team. There is support and no judgement.

Love Wispy

Wow -- I've had a day or two that low on carbs when I first restarted, but the dietician was VERY unhappy about that.

I hope you all will continue to share what works for you -- I'm hoping to learn more about these nasty carbs and how to make them work for me instead of against me.

Very interesting!!
My carb range is 20-50. Once a week 100.
My calories tend to be higher on low carb days. Working on getting them down to see if I can lose again!

Sounds like you have it all well under control. A friend of mine on the disability team is on the same overall calorie count as you are and she is around 2000 a day and has lost a lot of weight. She is now down to 150 and needless to say is just delighted.
Many of us start way over 200, I was one of them. She is able to eat 2000 calories and lose weight easily on that. We are all different in how many cals/carbs we can eat.
My friend also has a dietician who is delighted with her weight loss.

Look forward to hear how you are going.

Wispy, some of it may be my weight. I'm currently at 281. As my calorie max drops, so will my carbs. Right now I am on an 1800-2200 calorie diet and losing weight. I have seen in the past that as you lose weight, the SP diabetes diet will lower those numbers. But for now, that's where I'm at. Considering how I used to eat... it's definitely low carb for me. Both the dietician and I calculated my BMR at roughly 2200 calories. While weight loss is really important in the long run, getting that A1C down is the top priority right now.

Very interested that both lots of information suggest such high carb counts.

But I am really pleased that you are feeling better and the numbers are coming down.
That is what is important, however we achieve that along with losing the weight.

Way to go, keep up the good work.

Hugs Wispy.

I suspected I would find a number of type 2 diabetics in a low carb forum. emoticon

The dietician I am working with has stated I have to be above 100 carbs for the day. My SP diabetes diet suggests 225- 275 per day. I am on oral medication and insulin at this time. With my recent success, per my doctor I can omit one pill in the evenings when I am having lows in the morning. My next appt is January 7th.

My goals for that appointment.

1. Have my A1C be below 8.0 (it was 9.7 last visit)
2. Be 20+ pounds lighter than my 10/7 visit
3. See an improvement in my lipids panel, which was not too bad. Overall was 128, LDL needs to be lower, HDL needs to be higher, triglicerides were 248 (188 last time, 600+ the time before)
4. Have more energy -- feel super tired still (had TSH and T4 done last time, normal)
5. Feel more confident about my diet

I appreciate the warm welcomes so far. I look forward to learning alot from you ladies!

Hello there, so happy to have you join us.

I am also a diabetic, type 2 and the low carb way of eating has so far kept me off pills as well and pretty stable. Doc is happy and so am I. The other thing it has done is bring my blood pressure back down to a very good normal - no more pills for that either.

It is a way of life I really enjoy. In order to lose I did have to (still do if I want to lose more) throw in some low cal days as well. But maintaining on a cycling low carb/lowcal lifestyle is what keeps me maintaining. Something I have never been able to do in my life. Always a yoyoer.

Look forward to hearing how you go on the daily threads, if you have the time or inclination to post.

Hugs Wispy

emoticon i also am diabetic, but with the low carb lifestyle, I do not have to take meds and have not for over 3 years. Still maintain between 80 and 100. Diet and exercise does the trick for many of us. Some must take meds forever. It is what it is!!!!

Lord, bless my diet buddies and help me met my weight goals

Hello all!

I turn 50 in 5 more weeks. I am looking for a "home" here on SP for some support for my renewed effort to get my diabetes under control. I started back around 9/20, and with help from a dietician, I think I am on the path to success, but not without some bumps.

I'm from North Carolina, married to another diabetic with two teenage boys. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all!
