Yikes to that cold! I'd be very happy for some rain in California because of our fires, but am not ready for winter weather yet. I picked another flat of tomatoes yesterday, so am milking my garden for all it's worth.

The power came back on a couple of hours ago, but is expected to be off again at 4 am. So I'm doing a load of laundry and running the dishwasher and vacuuming tonight. No telling how long it will be off next time.

I have ultomato cages they are a triangle that you use clips to hold together and they are pretty strong and don't bend over like the wire ones
here is a close up view

I've had these for years and they come apart easy and they sell the clips at walmart as they do crack now and then. they take up less space in storage and they last a pretty long time

got most everything in yesterday by MYSELF am sore today.

Chris, i pulled up cages from my day lilies on Saturday and Dh put them away. Do you use those folding square ones? I have seen them and wondered how they worked? I wish they would make some taller ones---LOL
Terri, glad you got those piles burned and hope you don't lose anything in the freezer or the fridge.
It was just too warm here yesterday for the end of October. But I did get some cleaning done in the kitchen in preparation for our trip next week---want to only need to wipe down things before I leave next weekend.

The power is still off, but the storm has passed. We worked outside today and I got my brush piles burned with some help from Steve and 2 grandsons. I didn't sleep well last night, so it will be an early night tonight. The grandsons helped to finish the ice cream, which was getting soft. Everything else is still frozen in the freezer and cold in the fridge. Nothing lost yet but I may have to do some cooking tomorrow if the power isn't back on by then

Terri , love the idea of ice cream for lunch---LOL I would think right now that people best not stock up on stuff in their freezers there in California.
GF, why do we keep those boxes---LOL?
i pulled up the scraggly flowers and some weeds from the front beds. Everything looks so much better up front now. Even cleaned up the day lily bed some---some are still drying out so they will come up when they are done. I was sore last night and this morning but at least I know why..

Terri, your power will be off now as I write this. I hope it isn't too long. On our news tonight it was reported as possibly a couple of days. I hope not. I'm sure you are more prepared than most but the dangers, darkness and lost food in fridges and freezers is horrendous, not to mention all the rest of effects, winds and fires. Stay safe.

I wrote the above, then saw you latest posts. What a wonderful excuse to have Ice cream for lunch!

My whole Guest Room needs to be emptied, sorted, cleaned and organized. I'm sure 1/4 of it is half empty boxes and containers.

I slept in this morning, then had an afternoon nap, then went for a walk along the lake and sat in the sunshine in my van and read some more with a view of the lake. It was too cold and windy to sit on a bench. A very relazing day. I needed that R&R to recharge mentally and physically. Being at the lake is something magical.

I just keep the door closed as much as possible. I'll empty my ice container in the freezer to keep it from melting into a puddle, but all the other things will stay frozen for a couple of days without power if you keep the doors closed. Things don't go bad that quickly and if the time is extended, I'll start cooking. I might have to eat ice cream for lunch, but... emoticon emoticon emoticon

I have several areas that I need to do that with, Cathy. My desk, a big shelf and a cupboard in the laundry room and my pantry all need to be emptied, sorted, cleaned and organized. I really need to pick one and just do it.

Our power is going to be shut off today throughout the entire county and part of the next one because of high winds on the coast and dry conditions, so I need to get all of my "electrical" jobs done this morning before that happens. I think they said it would be around 4 pm.

Terri, it might have been related to that but there is a stomach virus going around, too. It definitely was not the flu---no body aches. Yes, you do need to know your mechanic and trust them. That is why Dh takes his truck where he does. Unfortunately, anything with my car has to be dealt with at the dealership but haven't had too many issues with it---when I have another issue with it I am going to look for another as I want a car that has the warning of a car in the changing lane since my side vision is so bad.
Barb, sounds like you had a busy week.
Chris, I have considered that but was always taught that it was not a smart move to lease---but the new lease thing seems to be a bit different and with the low miles that I put on a car, it might be a reasonable idea---figure my car is over 11 years old and I only have 66000 miles on it and I bought it new.
I tackled the storage cabinet in the classroom this week and got it all organized, stuff thrown out, and space created if we need it for anything else. Now I know where to put my hands on some thing when we need it.

One of the reasons I lease my car. By the time it is old enough to need any work like that I just trade it in and get a new one. I know it is not very cost effective, but when I had an older car I was paying that much pretty much every single month. So it was actually cheaper for me than the monthly repairs!

You have to be a scientist of sorts to figure out all the right proportions and which flours serve which purposes! Impressive!

Ouch to all the auto expenses. It makes me glad that I sleep with my mechanic, but as handy as he is, we still sometimes have to have someone else look at it and pay them. When I was in the canyon, taking care of things there while he worked here, I had to take my truck in to a shop a few times. Fortunately, they came well-recommended and we honest and fair. I am so distrustful of mechanics because they could tell me anything and I wouldn't know if I was being taken for "a ride".

Ouch! Lots of big expenses for all. I had them too. $700 for a headlight assembly (parking light bracket cracked from all the rough roads on my trip) and another $700 to have the door lock assembly (automatic locks) replaced. It was the cause of all my locking problems.

Terri, it is a backstrap loom weaving I brought back from Guatemala in 2013.

Cathy, I hope you're feeling better now.

My physio and chiro appts were this week plus a headache on Monday and then guild and hostess duties on Thur, so not much else accomplished this week. I tried another cookie recipe for guild. The issue with gluten free baking is the number of flours involved for each and the combinations are always different. there must be at least 10 different flours and some recipes use 4 in the one recipe.

Yes, I do need an oven I can rely on at this time of year! The apple pie tasted fine and the crust tasted okay too, but I definitely need to practice making pastry. I made a second batch of pastry and put it into the fridge over night and will use it to make hand pies today. I hope it holds up well. This recipe called for an egg in the dough, so maybe that will help it hold together better.

Sorry about the mechanical things on Howard's truck. That bill won't be fun, but at least it's not coming right at Christmas time or on top of a lot of other things.

Barb, I forgot to comment on your shelf/closet. I like the use of space. Did you weave the piece that's hanging on it?

Terri, glad the oven is fixed---definitely needed with the holidays coming up fast. Just 2 more months until Christmas Eve so you better get in that sewing room pronto.
Chris, you sure have gotten rid of stuff this year. Kudos to you. I put a couple more items in my donate pile when I switched over my pjs plus one top I decided I just didn't like how it fit.
Dh's back injection went well. His truck is in the shop---heat stopped working and now the brakes needed work, also---hate to see that bill when we pick it up.

While the service guy was here working on the oven, I sat at the table and removed belt loops from Steve's new jeans so that I can move them. I've only completed one set so far, but now have the loops removed from 2 more pair. I baked an apple pie after the guy left. The crust looks kind of icky. We'll see.

Sorry about your oven, they sure don't make appliances like they used to.

I usually do a major house clean purge every year, what with the kitchen remodel and the clean up after I sorta did a clean/purge. But I try to stick with I haven't worn it in a year it goes to goodwill, unless it is something special. I have also gotten rid of things I just don't use any more.

The basement is so MUCH cleaner, I an happy, I have to take stuff down from the rafters and decide what to toss from that too.

Like your makeshift broom closet.

My sewing machine is a sears kenmore that is all metal and it still runs fine. it is a pretty basic machine.

The past two days have put me back on track and I'm making better progress with my projects. I have one more huge Costco bag of small apples to cook down and make into something, and then I think I might be done with fruit for a while. Meanwhile, my little potted garden is still giving me tomatoes, peppers and lemon cucumbers, so I'll let it continue a while longer.

Now it's time to push on with the sewing and clear away all the mending and patching so that I can work on Christmas projects. I bought myself a new sewing machine that I found on sale, in order to have a backup. The other one is only 2 years old and is beginning to act up and I can't have that in the middle of my holiday sewing.

I'm having my kitchen range serviced today, as the thermostat went out on my oven again. They aren't going to charge me for the part because it's less than a year old, but I do have to pay for the service call. I don't think I should have to pay for any of it, but won't argue. I have to have a reliable oven.

Terri, that doesn't sound like a sluggish day to me!
Chris, you must be relieved to have heat! Good advice from Terri. When I was decluttering, I made a rule of one thing in, then two things out. It worked really well.
Cathy, thanks for the suggestion but ièm trying to use what I already have. I attached a velcro strip to the top of weaving and to the edge of the swing arm (from an adjustable balustrade). It's working perfectly. Am in the final stages in installing and fine tuning. Can't believe how much effort is involved of just positioning the end piece of the arm. I got pics taken!
this is the view as you walk down the hall to the kitchen.

When Open - Still some finishing to be done at the bottom and the baseboards. Also need to add the broom, mop hangars. The left side is the bookcase that faces open to the kitchen.

Terri, I felt like that this morning but had to go to work---and that turned into my nightmare---the teacher called out but never let me know---so I walked into quite a shock. Think this is the straw that broke the camel's back with me. I plan on hitting the couch very shortly but still catching up from not getting computer stuff done before I left this morning.

i have HEAT! took them only about 3 hours to do the install. So glad it is done, supposed to get into the 30's tonight and tomorrow. The furnace guy was also surprised to see a clean organized
basement. I'll do more next week, down there want to get the current mess picked up first.

I've had those days where all I want to do is crawl back to bed , that's ok now and then

I was such a slug yesterday that I didn't even get dressed until after noon. I know that's the way it is sometimes when you've been so busy and pushing yourself to get things done, and then the body just says, "I'm tired" and doesn't want to do anything. So I refused to let myself feel too guilty.

I did get the dehydrators filled with more apples, did one load of laundry and ran the dishwasher. Not much more than pushing buttons, but something. This morning, the laundry is folded and put away and the dishwasher is emptied. The apples that are dry have been removed and the trays washed and ready to be refilled, while the rest of them will continue to dry for the rest of the day.

I have to run to the post office to drop some mail and pick up a package and then I'll be home the rest of the day. I have my list going, so will see how many things I can get crossed off.

Chris, if you make it a goal to empty at least one box or bin from the basement into every garbage pickup every week, it won't add too much all of a sudden and will still get the mess cleared out in a short time. We no longer have trash pickup service at the house because they raised their prices so high that it wasn't worth it to us. We don't make much trash and are able to put our ONE bag every 2-3 weeks in with one of our kids' dump loads. They don't mind and it doesn't really cost them anything extra. I just bake them some cookies once in a while and we're all happy.

getting the new furnace in was a good excuse to get my son to move and rearrange all his stuff in the basement. He threw out a lot of stuff as did I. I still have more things to go through but will be doing it in bits, the last 2 weeks the garbage men have had a lot of stuff to collect! I don't want them to think bad things about "the horder" house!!LOLOL I'm not, but there was an awful lot to get rid of.

Bet you will be glad when you get the new furnace installed. Good reason to clean out the basement a bit.

Barb, they have circle things for a curtain pole with clips at the bottom to attach that hanging tapestry. Glad you had the energy to get it almost done---know you will be glad to get things in it and out of the way.
Chris, I am not looking forward to having to deal with picking out a medical plan for my dh with all his issues. Honestly, that is another reason why I might work 4 more years instead of just 2 just to keep him on my health insurance.
I did move some Christmas items off the deck into the new shed---now to look to find the perfect sign to put above the doors to the shed----LOL

Thanks all for your advise on my sister. I've been thinking about how to deal with it and will let it sit for a bit. It's too emotionally draining.

Chris your new furnace will be much more efficient than the old one, so that's a plus. sorry to hear about the bueurocratic rules. when I went to Phoenix for a job, the In Network and Out of Network and having to decide on a Dr at time of registration was so confusing and bizarre to me coming from Canada. When i was on my Cros Country trip, I had to go to the Emergency in a small town in New Brunswick. They looked up my Heath Care Card and I was taken care of. That was it.

Terri, that was good for the soul! The fruit and vegetables don't wait until we are ready to deal with them unfortunately. They are demanding little things.

Cathy, you may have been cold but it sounds like it was a lovely time. Nice luck with the shed.

To me, it seems to take more time for bill paying now since everything is emailed so copies have to be downloaded, account numbers and passwords kept track of, etc, etc.

I had a couple of tired and headachy days but I recovered and this morning I woke up with enough mental and physical energy to tackle the bookshelf and broom closet. I've been working on them all day. It's almost ready to use. Just a few more minor adjustments and find a way of attaching the Guatemalan weaving to the swing arm it is to hang on.

spent almost 4 hours on the phone with my health plan administrators trying to figure out what carrier to get and keep my same doctors. makes me so annoyed with these politicians that talk about universal health care. The Veterans have government health care, they are NOT being taken care of right. Sorry for the rant just so frustrating , i was happy with what I had why mess it up!

Too funny, Terri! You should have done the selfie! LOL
The shed got Michael's approval, we paid for it---and they had had a cancellation that day and were able to lay the base and then delivered the shed in the afternoon. So dh has his new toy---LOL
We enjoyed our time with our gd and Michael's gf's son, too. He's the one going with us to Disney. He definitely is not going to want to ride any big rides but that is fine with us. Michael and Ashlie can go ride them if they want and we will do stuff with him while they are doing that.

Good idea to get Michael's opinion on the shed. Have fun with gd today.

Yes, the young man was really cute and apologetic about having to ask for ID, but I said, "Don't apologize...I might come over there and kiss you--or take a selfie with you and send it to my husband!" He laughed and said, "And I'd give you my permission as long as he didn't get mad"

Seriously, I have grandchildren who are his age! LOL See...I'm still chuckling.

Chris, I paid the bills this week, too.
Terri, LOL, isn't it amusing when that happens! I know I made a man's day when I worked in Walmart when he bought something and it came up to see if the purchaser was over 18---so I asked him and he just laughed---and then his wife got mad because he was laughing with me. I thought that was funnier that she was so jealous of her dh having a good laugh---kind of sad though.
Boy, it was cold yesterday with the wind but I dressed all the kids warmly for the field trip to the pumpkin patch. They had fun but the teacher was cold---now isn't she an adult and should know how to dress? I treated them to pizza and a drink at Sam's Club before we went back to school---we only had 3 kids with us---the other one didn't show up.
Turned the heat on last night---it was below 70 in the house so it was time.
We are meeting our son to look at the shed Dh likes to see what he thinks. WE will also have our gd today so we will be busy with her.

SO. MUCH. TO. DO!

Apples, sewing, laundry, cooking...

Yesterday was a day in town with a big list of stops. I got my groceries, picked up an extra dehydrator from DD1's, stopped at the blood bank to donate, but they said my iron is low and deferred me. That was a low point in my day, but then at the grocery store a young clerk asked to see my ID for the wine I was buying!! I'm still chuckling over that one!

Barb, I know she is your sister but that doesn't give her the right to yell at her. Find a card that says what my sister gave me---Not sure if I am the bad sister or the good one! LOL Hope no surprises with your fireplace.
Chris, better to have that new one to get you thru the winter---the old one gave you good service for the those years so good idea to replace it than spend that kind of money that might not last the whole winter.
Terri, making yummy things!
Others are finally noticing. I just do my job and do it well. Others have to make the decision about the teacher but she isn't making a whole lot of progress with others.
I get to wear my raincoat I bought in Maine this summer today---we need the rain as we are in a burn ban due to drought.

Cable bill can always be renegotiated. I always ask for a Better rate. They say that is for NEW customers. I say fine I'll cancel and then reapply and they then but you to a retention specialist.

We have those stink bugs, they sure are medieval looking and they do stink! I have a Dyson vacuum cleaner and wash the container out now and then so not worried about reproducing spiders.

Hope you and your sister get back together, maybe just call her and start off like nothing is the matter. Then you can talk about it

Catching up,
Chris, I was just reading yesterday that the MIL Tongue "gets very large if in a bigger planter". I sympathise with those surprise bills. I've had a couple with my van in the last 2 mths, each $700 and I should be getting new snow tires this year too.

Cathy - that's lots of organizing for the trip. Glad it's going smoothly and it will make your trip better. I probably should plan more for my trips. I kinda wing it and see what I find. fine when we are younger but it doesn't work so well now. I hope your situation at school gets better. What on earth will they do when you retire?

Speaking of spiders, being on the 3rd flr, I don't get many but when I find them, I capture them and through them over the balcony. I don't want spiders in my vacuum reproducing. We have scary looking things that people refer to as stink bugs so I've never crushed one. Treat them the same as spiders.

I've been making meals and soups. The freezer is full and I still need to process some of the apples since I won't get thgour them by just eating one a day.

The gas fireplace tech is coming tomorrow to do the yearly service and I haven't got the room readied yet I've been on the phone for 2 1/2 hours trying to get my TV and Internet bill straightened out. It was supposed to go down and instead it has increased $80 because they gave me the offer of a better rate but didn't put it through. Ugh!

My sister who i usualyy communicate with frequently is mad aat me and has cut me off. Oh sigh! i thinkit is partly because of the stress she is under and I talked back when she was yelling at me.

Cathy, there has GOT to be someone that needs to know about what she's doing --or NOT doing, but getting paid for!

I'm busy with apples again this morning. I've filled 2 dehydrators and am cooking some more down into sauce that may then be turned into more apple butter.

Lovely picture, Barb--and I hope your Thanksgiving was pleasant and meaningful.

Chris, I have been working on getting my kids moved out even though the youngest has been on her own since 2010. The last big purge came when DD1 moved into a new house and needed furniture. We're downsizing, so I gave her my extra beds and bedroom furniture, some end tables, my big dining room table and chairs, and all the things I've been saving for her from my MIL after her passing. There are still a few things stored down in the shop, but they'll be on their way out, too.

Hi, Barb. Lovely picture.
Chris, it does make you wonder what you were thinking by keeping that stuff. But I was glad I kept some curtains from our old place when I redid the spare room. Finding curtains I like can be such a challenge. But replacing the windows meant I could use normal curtains instead of thermal ones.
Yesterday was a good day for a nap---we did get a bit of rain which we need badly----so it was a dismal looking day.

The basement IS the worst!! Got about 1/2 of it cleaned out. Threw out a lot of junk!! Can't believe I kept so much of that. Found some things i forgot i had! The vacuum is certainly busy with all the spider webs and they are scurrying!! But my Dyson is taking no prisoners! emoticon

Cathy, I didn't forget Steve, I just forgot what day it was! It was sure nice to have him for the whole weekend. Now it will be a 6-day week, so I won't see him until Sunday.

I finally finished drying all the pears and have 8 gallon-sized freezer bags full of dried pears for the winter. Now I'm drying some apples to go with them and am done with my bucketful and ready to pick some more.

Chris, that's so great of your son to help out his Gram that way. My grands are always willing to lend a hand when I need one and I truly appreciate it.

Neat idea since you don't have a dehydrator to do it with. Hope all things turn out well for you, too.
We lost a few strawberry plants with this drought so dh dug up the ones still surviving in the old bed and put them in the new box---we really had to soak that box yesterday several times. My work mate that i give rides to school came by and helped him spread out the dirt where the old bed was so that Dh can now go order his shed. My pal helped me plant the 20 pansies I brought home. I pulled up the vinca in those spaces---it was so dry up there, too, that I watered the soil before I planted the pansies---isn't that crazy? I did pull some weeds up front, too. Then we went to Walmart where he helped us get 3 bins of cat litter so we have enough to get us thru we get back from Florida. My pal is taking care of my cats and my son's dogs while we are gone and I am leaving him my car to get back and forth as we are taking my son's SUV down to Disney.
Got a surprise in the mail---our Magic bands---less than a month to go before I am on vacation!

while at my moms house my son took a whole bag of basil and parsley from her garden. then he went and cut up a fistful of chives from my garden. he chopped and separated everything and separated onto paper towels to absorb the moisture , I am now in the process of drying all. I don't have a air dryer so what i do is they were put on paper towels at first and put onto empty plant racks, as the parsley went in first onto the 2 pizza trays I have with small holes on the whole bottom, without the paper towels. I turn on the oven to 350 let it reach the temp turn it off and put the trays in one on each shelf. let it sit for 24 hours and they are pretty much dehydrated at that point. I might have to repeat if there is a lot. I haven't tried it on thicker things but it might work I guess.

Good for him in cleaning up afterwards and helping her out that way. Your mom is lucky to have you both to help her out.
Terri, how could you forget Steve? LOL
Been a long week at school---the teacher has only been there for half a day this week---the rest of the week I did everything---but the kids worked hard, they learned, and they had some fun along with it.
We are finally enjoying some cool weather----I hope to get some things done outside and to make a meatloaf for dinner---yum!

I have no problem if any of you does it. I tend to just forget that, Heck I forgot a Doc appointment because I thought it was still monday and it was actually tuesday which was my appont date!

Long day yesterday. after doing all the mom errands on wed, I forgot my little basket with all the nail/pedicure supplies at mom's so on the way home I stopped and my son was with me as he needed a car that day. So We get ther and she wants Josh to cut a tree/bush back that was on her fence. He did that cleaned up all the debris from it, then hauled it all out to the curb for pickup today, plus her garbage and some other errands. So didn't get home til almost 7 pm.

Thanks Chris! I thought about making the Oct chat, but have been swamped and trying to stay off the computer until I get some work done. It can really pull me into a vortex of wasted time and before I realize, its noon! So I do best if I don't even turn on the PC (currently on my phone).

Friday snuck up on me this week and I just realized that this will be a 2-day weekend for Steve, so he'll be home tonight! All the more reason to get my chores done.

Ordered scooter for Dh for DisneyWorld--and found out that if I need one, we can get it in 2 hours delivered to our hotel. So going to try the first day without one to see how I do. And found out that the new gondola system has been hooked up to our hotel--the first one to get the connection---and it goes to Hollywood and Epcot and between the 2 so our first 2 days will be easy transportation for those 2 days. Will use the buses for the other 2 parks.
