REJ- lol you mean like Spam? haha just kidding. It does take a culture which you can get from plain yogurt or buying- I recommend Cultures for Health. Now I had a weird thing happen- I made yogurt in my instant pot and it got stuck on the yogurt setting. I would try to cook another thing and it would go back to yogurt like it was obsessed. Anyhow- I had to make a video and send to IP company and they replaced the bottom part of the instant pot. It was possessed! haha

I have not made it in some time. I wish I cook make a clone of me just for cooking. I need to focus on illustration. Yes I do love to eat and cook this way but illustration takes hours out of the day too..

Anyhow!
Happy Thanksgiving to all! Hope you get plenty of veggies along with whatever else you eat and if you are off today get right back on and if you stick with nutritarian then bravo! But be easy with yourself. Life is short - be kind! To you and yours. Wishing you all a happy day.

Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. I enjoyed seeing how one step led to another and then that led to another step... all the way to where you are now. You use words for foods that I'm not familiar with yet. I'm not nearly as far along on my nutritarian journey. I've only been doing this for about 2 years now. Does it take a special culture to make plant-based yogourts? I miss having yogourt.

No matter how slow you go, you are STILL lapping everybody on the couch.

REJ- I did not learn it at all from my Mom. To be honest though she did the best she could. A movie could be based on her past. Long story.

Anyhow- well learned from ex- boyfriends! -to begin with
Then me and cookbooks.
Then a few videos- youtrube

ex boyfriends-One worked in a restaurant. One was from Hawaii and from a Chinese family and taught me many of the family dishes. Another from Lebanon taught me hummus and pickling and that you could make home made pita. Baklava too- yum although it was not vegan- but there are vegan versions.. certainly not Eat to live though! lol

I then had a vegetarian boyfriend- I had gone back and forth with being vegetarian since I was 16 but did not have the support or time..He did not cook but the relationship encouraged me in that direction

AND-or but before that even-
I also lived for sometime with one ex boyfriend who ate very unhealthy foods- liked and still likes Spam and Dinty Moore..we still are in touch and he is overweight with many health problems. He does eat veggies and we have talked - but he says he is a hedonist and does not want to change his ways..I know how bad I felt when I was eating those type of foods. I also worked for years in a nursing home at same time- so I saw what diet does to people.

Anyhow so back to- when I was dating the vegetarian guy I noticed he had concern for the animals but had no idea how to take care of himself. He bumped into me and the 4 kids years later and was astounded by the amount of greens I was buying. When I dated him- he did not cook but I cooked him more comfort type foods.(he also drank a bit too much)
He died a few years back.
Anyhow- still learning to cook...replacing cheese eventually with tofu / etc.. cauli

On and off...a small detour into Nourishing Traditions and all that "traditional foods" which I did get some good things from such as soaking grains for digestibility
- I did get back to veg cooking and then vegan and taught myself- oil free cooking and spices etc.

The horrors of dairy and the way of I feel after having it make me always give that up before the flesh- I know most go the other way around

I have made a desem (which almost became like a pet). emoticon Started it when the kids were little as part of our home schooling. wikipedia.org/wiki/Desem And also sourdough. Sprouted things. Made and make vegan cheese. Faux "meats" - which really I don't like to call them that - when made at home and from good ingredients can be a good addition to healthy eating.

btw- have made seitan from flour- yikes that takes patience- ..I had book where you strain the flour to get to the gluten that I ..as Brother Ron Pickarski. amazon.com/Friendly-Foods-Ron-Picars
ki
/dp/0898153778
teaches but yikes his methods wer eso complicated. I di dhave his cookbook but donated it after getting as much as I could ..now just buy the flour
I like making plant milk yogurts. I have made soymilk- I have not had success in tofu making -yet! I have made yuba- quite good. Okara is good too- product of the soymilk making
Anyhow- self taught. I own many cookbooks!!!

I'm glad I helped in any way!
oh and btw- I have combined 2 mayo recipes-
The aquafaba one and Susan Voisin's one that she makes with canned artichoke hearts.
-came out quite good!..and went online and I see ther is a mashed potato with Hellman's mayo- so will sub out Hellmans and put in the mayo I made- will let you know!!!

I do have a long list of people I have not met in real life that are my teachers.

Thank you, White!

Em, bravo on the walk, the swim and the salad! If you didn't learn healthy cooking at home, when did you learn it? I'm asking because it seems to be second-nature for you. I've learned quite a few "secrets" from your posts.

REJ emoticon me too- about eating this way my whole life- of course as a kid I ate nothing like this. Mom used to use lots of cream of mushroom soup. I did not have broccoli until I wen to college!

Had a nice chunk of free time so I walked 2 miles to pool. Swam laps for about 25 minutes- the hot tub was open!!! 10 minutes of that and walked back home. The 2 miles take me about 33 minutes each way. I usually bike or drive but it is nice to walk over with my backpack

Eating aHUGE salad now!

Happy weekend all!
So grateful to have this team and all this beautiful food.

"slow and steady and pass the greens please!" - Love it!

That was an interesting article about miso. I've always wondered about blood-pressure and the salt in miso.

I had a very encouraging appointment with my doctor yesterday. She lowered my blood pressure medication by half again, to only 10 mg. She remarked "It's extremely rare to take a person off so many medications: heart medication, diabetes medication, and most blood pressure medication. Bravo!"

I wish I could go back and live my life as a nutritarian from the beginning, but I can't. I am very grateful though that even if I greatly abused my body in the past, we are created in such a way that the body WANTS to heal itself and if we give it the proper nutrition, it mostly does just that!

REJ- so very very true!

The side effects of this way of eating are good health and then a side effect of that is your proper weight- healthy weight and it may take time. I am going for slow and steady and pass the greens please!

Also- do not pass the salt. I have been doing much better with that. Although miso is pricey- I am using it in hummus and sometimes my soups- I use the white one mostly.
Good study on miso -

I hope the weather holds- I am going to walk to the pool and swim and then walk back ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC531

I love reading all your posts and picking up useful suggestions and recommendations. I don't lose weight very fast anymore, so I seldom get on the scale. This isn't necessarily about losing weight, it's about living the healthiest lifestyle possible. I must admit though that I was quite pleased to see that I've lost another 2 lbs over the last 2-3 months. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and I'm looking forward to seeing more results of my nutritarian eating.

Recently, when I had a cold, I made ginger tea (slice of fresh ginger) and a little honey. I like it well enough that that is my go-to tea now.

In the blue zones book, they mentioned that the Greek island people made tea with wild herbs (likely oregano, thyme) and that their blood pressure was very low. The scientists surmised that the tea had some properties that mimicked blood pressure medicine. A savory tea like this might not need sugar.

-and about the coffee. I get organic beans. Grind them fresh and he still likes the cream and sugar. So it is not that either. I am having some black right now BUT with all the advice from our healthy Docs- from Fuhrman to Klaperr.. Greger etc.. I always feel like I need to also eliminate at some point.
Peppermint tea? or-

Thank you!
- the kids are worried about his smoking and not doing anything physical. The kids all do all kinds of things- hiking..swim etc.
But as for the food- he does eat super healthy and prefers that -except has bad habits in addition to it. So- for ex. there is a wine tasting on Thursday at a liquor store and they serve pepperoni /salami/meatballs and cheeses and he eats tons of that. It is like he has a great routine- loves all my food and then has these meals for entertainment.

Another ex- steel cut oats and fruit and home made pumpkin seed milk + flaxseed and a small kale and fruit smoothie for breakfast but has his coffee with half and half and 3 teaspoons of sugar.

Thank you for the luck. I really think..and I have seen it in the past that when I am running my races and at a good weight it gets him going. He gets competitive. I think that is key- and is a good motivator for me. I have been "active" but..not really giving it my best
I find Lucious Smith in Gamechangers to be very motivational. Because of his age- and also how he goes about just being plant based and working out so hard.

This house hunting due to low inventory has been a strain!
-along with some other stuff.
Got my white board out and am creating a schedule to stick to

LetsgoPlay: You mentioned your kids are worried about your husband. That can work to your advantage. My kids are health conscious and my husband used to pooh pooh my reminders that having white bread slathered with butter for every meal was not so healthy. They got him to cut back by saying, How about, Dad, if you enjoyed your bread with one meal a day? How about if, when you eat pasta, you don't also have bread?

Fast forward four years. DH loves my homemade whole wheat sourdough bread (and products), but only one meal a day, and does not even use butter or margarine anymore. Does not miss it even!

It took our kids mentioning it to him to make the change.

Good luck!

White-green- good idea about the soup. The commentors are just jealous perhaps?

Mrs.Livingwell- I understand after all someone might judge me just for the fact I do the cooking. I learned how to cook from ex-boyfriends so I certainly know guys can cook!! lol- a little off tangent there.
Another good thing is my DH has never cared what people think about him- so that is helpful. Sometimes annoying to other people but bottom line is I just want him t be healthy. I think he is despite the smoking because of the food!
-and for me I just get sick of being away from goal. Got down to 143 and now back up. BUT this plan works when you stick to it. I am eating whole food plant based- but more of the limited than i should.
Sticking to it. Going for it. One step at a time- as you said!! emoticon
oh- and btw White-green - thank you for the sharing food thread! emoticon emoticon

What a great story about your husband, MrsLivingWell!
My husband too will eat whatever I serve and likes most of it. We agreed to not have cheese / dairy in the house but he does miss the cheese. He may go back to buying and eating it, I hope not. He does eat a lot of stuff beside the food that I prepare for him; bread, butter, spreads, at work he'll accept cake and sweets. I am glad that I can serve him lots of vegetables and I will also place fresh fruit in front of him and nuts sometimes, and if I do he'll eat it, and I think he's now getting more fruit in on his own initiative, too.
I just started giving him a thermos of hot vegetable soup to take to work and so far he seems to have enjoyed having the soup for lunch at work - he was a bit worried about comments he got about it.

LetsgoPlay, I've been where you are with my spouse. For a year, I made two meals three times a day (no judging, please, he works long days and then comes home and works on our farm). Over time, he started eating my meal and then, as his tastebuds changed, started eating this way even when I wasn't with him. He orders vegetables or vegetable soup when i"m not with him. His coworkers kid him relentlessly, but he is the healthiest of the bunch!

Now, when we travel, he complains about finding healthy food to eat!

I found the recipes from Brand New Vegan to be the best to introduce him to this way of eating.

Step by step.... Good luck!

I'm going to have a regular Eat to Live day today- we have leftovers.
I am going to do 5-7 days of a mono diet starting tomorrow.
Sweet potatoes for breakfast.
Mary McDougall has a plan for that- Ray Cronise too. Penn Jillette has done it. Andrew Spud Taylor. Krocks in the Kitchen on Youtube did it before going whole food plant based. What it does for me is help with my salt addiction..although the McDougall's are not against salt but Dr. Greger and Dr. Fuhrman say to avoid it and I know my BP goes down when I don't use salt. Miso does seem to be ok

Now- if you listen to the Krock's or Penn they will say it is crazy and not for everyone. But it helped me get back on track before so I will do. Not for 14 days. 5-7 is good enough

I got my 7 hours- such a big difference. !!
Yes- my DH does not work out...and..so..
Yes- he will eat anything I give him.. although a few years back when I did a keto experiment he did ask if I was trying to kill him emoticon I said no- he does not have life insurance emoticon
-so having said that the is grateful for the food I give him but he will have coffee all day and add sugar and cream/ milk and if he has the opportunity to eat pizza/ meat/etc.. he will.
-and he went back to smoking.

Our kids worry.

I actually started the keto thing thinking if he could just have the meat and veggies he could be healthy and as I saw him add sugar to the coffee ..well that idea went out the window and besides I like being vegan!
-so back to he will eat what I cook..I know some that will cook unhealthy options for husband because he said he wants that and will not eat..I dunno kale sald for ex..or/ anyhow - and I am sorry but if you are doing the cooking then I think you should make the choices. And to be honest? I think you are using that as an excuse to continue with unhealthy foods

I need to take care of me. Thank you- for saying I can inspire here. I hope to inspire him.
I need to do this for me!

yes REJ! I am determined emoticon
and btw- MRS.LIVINGWELL-you inpsire me to keep batch cooking and cook healthy foods! emoticon

I'm sorry to read that you're having sleeping problems, Em. Plus a partner who's not exactly on the same health wavelength as you are doesn't make things any easier. But I see that you've formulated a good plan, and if your determination in the past is any indication, you'll succeed AND motivate the rest of us while you're at it.

No matter how slow you go, you are STILL lapping everybody on the couch.

I've been giving some more thought to this and
here goes
Priority -sleep!!!- my needed 7.5 hours. I'm going to go caffeine 70% free too-buy decaf beans- and add 1/3 cafeeine- so 1/3 caf-2/3 decaf!

Bring back my exercise.
I considered doing a mini diet- potato..it has worked before but I think instead I will stick to Eat to Live guidelines as I am cooking for 2 and I think that is best. I might change my mind- if I do it will be 7 days max. It does simplify things. Not sure...

If not-
Porridge +f laxseed+ small side smoothie/ fruit with
-or a bean burrito for breakfast/ bean soup
-or veggies for breakfast
Lunch- Big salad + soup + cooked veg
Supper- pretty much the same

ok!

REJ- good way of putting it. I have been a bit off too.
I think the root of my problems is lack of sleep. I am one of those who suffer because of my partner. He caught a cold- he also recently picked up smoking-again after quitting countless times during our 28 year marriage..he smoked sefveral years before that. I am very sleep deprived right now- due to nights of bad sleep + just off a healthy track . So- I an going to see what i can do about taking care of that. Priority. emoticon
Good job on throwing the garbage in the can emoticon

I made an unwise "junk food sweets" purchase at the grocery store this week. Surprise, surprise... when I got home, I ended up eating sweets. So, I just threw the rest of them into the garbage can. Better in the garbage can than in me. I was disappointed in myself because I've been doing so well at "winning my battles at the grocery store". Next time I'll spend my money on nutritarian food for myself, rather than feeding the garbage can!

It is a busy time. But I batch cooked potatoes, sweet potatoes and curried vegetables to have this week. And I had premade bags of cooked pintos. Today, I hope to make a big bowl of nutrient dense salad. Tomorrow morning, I'll make some miso soup (including some greens I found in the garden, along with carrots, garlic, tofu, miso and mushrooms).

My brother and his wife are really into all kinds of great food- goji berries in a kale salad for ex- so I suspect there will be plenty of food- but I hope to add some things that are nutritarian.

This is my brother's second marriage- she is from Japan. They are good at hosting- so I am lucky as I can just be and there will be plenty. Yes they will have they have the turkey but they put great thought into it too- meaning it is usually from wholefoods and although can still be problematic as far as health-is a bit better..not antibiotics. I once was invited to my sister- actually his twin's and it is so opposite. I decided to be a good guest and eat. It was a very stressful year and in her way she was being generous. I gained about 5 pounds because of salt. It was all just factory type stuff- hardly any veggies.. I think there were peas.

To be honest though I know each meal is given in love. So to me that is what is most important. It is only one day
Our kids are all over the place -we might see one daughter and her BF - not sure yet
& we may decide to cook together over the weekend- my west coast baby can't so we will have to skype.

While there will be other dishes at Thanksgiving that are not so healthy, I know I can at least make the following in a healthy way: mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberries, green beans, salad. Others make dishes with a lot of cheese, oil, cream , etc..

I'll be practicing on new pumpkin pie recipes. I'm the only one who likes this, so it might as well suit my diet!

I enjoyed reading everyone's motivational posts. It looks like you have a good plan for a win-win Thanksgiving, Em. Win on the social side AND as a nutritarian. emoticon

I'm planning to use Hello Nutritarian's three-dot monitoring system in November in order to visually track my adherence to nutritarian eating. It's so easy to have "little" cheats and then wonder why things aren't working as well as when I was more compliant. I'm hoping that a VISUAL of this month's choices will me provide me with useful info.

hellonutritarian.com/how-to-
cheat-on-y

What do you do with the little packets of salad dressing that come in salad mixes? Chef AJ says we should just throw them away. I find it hard to throw them away because it seems wasteful, and I feel bad when I eat them because they sure aren't nutritarian. I know the oily dressing has "ruined" my healthy salad. It's so stupid! And yet it's a problem for me. Any suggestions?

Hard to get myself going today. I'll do some yoga at home, but want to venture out for water aerobics today (new pool for me).

Drinking a lot of ginger tea (really just ginger in hot water) with honey to help my sinuses that are having a terrible allergy time.

You are so inspirational in so many ways. I plan to interval run today. Also, one need look no further than nursing homes to see that we must do what we can, wherever we are in the journey to eat better and move more. If you don't get off the couch, someday, you will not be ABLE to get off the couch. Muscles don't grow on trees.

and- 4 or so years - ago I worked at nursing home and could see all the suffering connected to diets.
I had picked up a book written by Nathan Pritikin- being 18 the plan and ideas seemed restrictive but I did experiment.
I was continuing running- had ran track and cross country in high school. I remember going out on long runs during those college years 18- 23 ish and after eating a meat based diet having a headache- exertion type headache but not having that when following a more vegetable based diet. These were just my own little experiments and at that time seemed really weird..but I am glad I found that Pritikin book. I have lived my life disease free and I think learning and leaning that way have helped!

I agree with the beets- seems to really help. I'm not at their level but I do know in 2017 when I was training for marathon that being on a whole food plant based plan helped tremendously- esp the recovery phase.

Best way to live and every so often I slip and have food as entertainment it often tastes greasy and very salty. I am by no means perfect BUT I do need to stick to this as Dr. Fuhrman's ideal weight for me is still pretty far- I am not actually using it- a bit too low For women, his formula allows 95 pounds for the first five feet of height plus four pounds for every inch thereafter.
That would be 115. I will stick to 123.4 or so- good for me but as I said not there-
The why- is I go off. Holidays/ social things - and I need to figure out what to do with tha tesp as the Holidays are coming.

Having a smoothie before say going to my brother's house is not a good idea. I will just have too many calories. But bringing a good dish will help+ he and his wife are really into healthy food yet they also both love to make people happy...so yep stuffing etc. They are omni.
Anyway- we are going there this year. I will skip the drinks- lol that will surprise him (sparkling water is good)
but it will be for the best and I will sample small bites of things and the main food will be a veg dish= I will figure it out

I need to do the 6 week challenge 100% ..or possibly 100 with Thanks giving being a little off just for the one meal. I will go look at the calendar and also look at hellonutritarian.com/ I find her inspirational.

I'm not exactly off the rails BUT I want to get to goal!!!! emoticon
-hey I did not realize this was going to be so long!

As I mentioned on the McDougall Plans team, we just finished watching the Gamechangers and it was very inspirational. So many specific examples of how strength and recovery were affected by changing their diet. Professional athletes look for every advantage and it was interesting seeing how they did it.

Congratulations on your run, Em! emoticon
And I'm glad you will have motivation to keep improving during the coming year too.

Too bad about the house, but good that you could back out of it. I hope that you will find something that is more suitable and that you will like just as much!

I haven't seen Game Changers. I had Netflix for a while, but I cancelled it because so many of the better films just aren't available here in Canada. Our choice of films is VERY limited compared to what's available in the USA. MOST of the films I wanted to see were unavailable. The limited selection made it not worth the subscription price.

aw! MRSLIVINGWELL I am not up to tha level (yet) but really proud of my friend. He has really improved his health. He does not live in my area- or state but being able to compete is good. I keep looking for a running club but have not had success finding (yet) lol

I hope to find a house before I run out of money with the inspections! But it does save in long run. We were going to have it abated but the levels are so high and I am not quite sure about source

so- I keep thinking i am going to cook some more complex thing but I have been keeping it simple as it is just my DH and I. So for ex I cooked up some black lentils in broth and that was just fine. No need to turn them into anything

Letsgoplay: Awesome on the running. It's like talking to someone from the "Gamechangers" documentary. Now on netflix, that is...

It's good to have a running partner who spurs you on. That is the benefit of being in a running club, I've heard. They don't make one with older, slow runners like me, though....

Great that you could back out of that house. You don't want to mess with mold!

oh and -
My racing buddy is hooked now so we will compete again next year. Gives me a why to do -
-hill training as that bridge was steep!
-get to racing weight which is my goal weight!!!!
-get faster. Without too much training I was 10 minute and about 25 seconds per mile. I would love to be somewhere between 7-8 minutes. Hope to maintain that in my 60's

So- that really helps. He is thankful which really makes me happy and his wife is too. She is super nice. It is win win for us all.

I am taking a couple of hermit- off days.

I backed out of the house. The mold is bad enough but add to that some systems issues and it is just not the right house. I will keep looking.

“Delaying a meal brings about symptoms most people call "hunger." These symptoms include abdominal cramping, weakness, and feeling ill-the same as during drug withdrawal. This is not hunger. Our dietary habits, especially eating animal-protein-rich foods three times a day, are so stressful to the detoxification system in our liver and kidneys that we start to get withdrawal, or detoxification, symptoms the minute we aren't busy processing such food. Real hunger is not that uncomfortable.”

REJ- and you mentioned the other key which is eat only when you are hungry. The food is sooo good sometimes I need to slow down. Chew and I find that helps too.

I'm losing- a bit more slowly but going in the right direction. And I feel really good. Sleep is fantastic.

I'm hoping to find a pair of sweats at a second hand store for race. It will be cold and maybe windy so at start you can abandon the clothes and they donate them.
I will also pick up some groceries today.

Piano is coming along!!

Gotta go cook some beets first... emoticon emoticon I think th tais a turnip emoticon but

Mrs. Livingwell: I agree. I've found that to be one of the secrets of success. Focusing on making sure that I fill up on nutritional, life-promoting greens and other veggies, berries, fruits, nuts, mushrooms... getting my g-bombs daily. My focus is on what I need and want to eat, not on what I can't have. And as you said, when I've eaten all that, there's not much room for anything else. Of course, it's still possible to eat calorie-dense foods (oil, junk foods, pastries) when someone isn't hungry. But as a nutritarian, I'm rarely inclined to do so. Dr. Fuhrman tells us not to eat when we're not hungry.

No matter how slow you go, you are STILL lapping everybody on the couch.

Letsgoplay: Let me add to that that each healthy change you make, however small adds to the total!

I read a good tip about encouraging others: Just add a vegetable or two to your plate. Before finding McDougal and ETL, I found that eating the recommended number of fruit and vegetables each day ALONE meant that I didn't have room for worse stuff!

It's not about perfect, it's about effort. Jillian Michaels

I feel healthier just READING your posts, Em. emoticon I usually pick up simple ideas for good meals. You've been at this a lot longer than I have and sometimes, I think I make things too complicated. (still learning)

And it looks like you did well on your run! Your friend is in for a challenge. emoticon
