Had a tough day yesterday--cravings were everywhere. Finally has a couple of squares of dark chocolate in the evening. I think it was partially because it was day 12 (inspired by the McDougall plan) and I wanted to celebrate how much better I'm feeling. Today's another day.

On the ETL You can eat fruit as much as you want...but I have peeled and cut kiwis and freeze them and then put in my smoothies

On the six weeks plan you can't have dairy as far as the yogurt goes. You might be able to have plant yogurt just watch out for the sugar.

I have a 6% rule and kiwis are 12% net carbs, so I don't eat them, but ...

Do you eat yogurt on ETL? Buy some unflavoured yogurt, I like Greek yogurt myself, than mash and blend in the kiwis to make kiwi yogurt.

Wed JUNE 18th: 144

House is restocked and grand daughter visit over.
I did nothing but rest yesterday.
Our temps and humidity are too high for at least 48 hours now.
Inside safety.

Question about a big KIWI purchase: emoticon
I forgot the box was in the pantry.
Moved to the fridge now, they are extremely ripe.
At what point do I toss them instead of eat any?
And how many a day are too much to consume so rapidly?

Just joined and I love this team. It is so active and supportive. And I truly believe that a plant focused diet is the key to health and haven't found a lot of other teams like this on Sparkpeople. I'm very excited. I see that you guys share a lot of posts on healthy eating and just wanted to share one of my favorite blogs.

http://www.mindbodygreen.com/

They share a lot of plant based recipes and research and articles about helping people get healthier.

Thanks! We got a late start up here in the north, but seeing some flowers on the snow peas and getting excited! I had to replant some of the green beans, 'cause someone else in the garden was getting excited too. Must remember to overplant next year - now that we are eating more, and "donating" some to the wildlife.

I was wandering the same thing about green beans and peas...well French beans (I'm guessing these are green beans) has about 13 grams and one cup of boiled peas has 9 grams of protein.

So maybe you can use them for one cup of beans.

Bearbrook, I think they'd count more as a vegetable. I have some sugar snap peas ready to harvest in my little garden! They're so good raw.

I have planted a ton of green beans and snow peas in the garden. Just wondering if they count as a bean in Dr. F's cup-of-beans-a-day recommendation? Can't wait until they are ready!

Sat JUNE 7th: 144.0

Thanks for the support, I have been doing better. I love the reminder to roast everything.. in quantities for several days, and how worth it it is. My mother roasts veggies all the time and yet I shy away from doing it.

My OT has only 2 sessions left for the 10 that medicare covers and I have another lumbar puncture Tuesday before consulting with the neurologist AND rheumatologist together. (my request the second doc hears directly from the first better than from me)

Dog is barking for attention so I better dress and take advantage of this morning's weather.

I get tomato sauce that is salt free, there's and some salsa that have less salt...pace has some that are lower and I can't remember that other.

There are canned beans and veggies that salt free, and low sodium broths and soups.

Have you seen vegetarian chilli and baked beans wow wee the the sodium was VERY high.

I even bought a bag of frozen peas that had lots of salt,I couldn't believe it.

We've been reading labels for sodium these days. Wow! What an eye-opener! For example, checking out the salsas, so much salt!!! I'll start making my own EVERYTHING! You'd think there'd be a salsa or tomato sauce that proudly proclaims "low salt".

Has anyone found any low-salt everyday products like that you could recommend?

GREAT share!

I love it and I am in the kitchen less these days, but then again I love raw fruits and veggies, smoothies too. Salads are so darn easy. I actually look forward to a day using the steamer, rice cooker or the crock pot. My gosh ETL and so many other vegan plans are so very easy. But what is easier still; is NOT going to the doctor!

We were talking to a friend of ours about E2L and he's very interested, but the kind of guy who looks for excuses not to do it. He said that he read a review of E2L on WebMD and it said that it wouldn't cost any more BUT you'd spend more time prepping your food. --sigh-- Whole foods will take a little extra prep, I said, It's not processed food ready to microwave.

I told him that the trick is to prep enough for a few days. For example, I have the day off so I got up early and did this:

Roasted a pound of chopped mushrooms

Roasted 3 pounds of onions

Roasted zucchini, tomatoes, garlic and herbs

Roasted 2 bags of frozen spinach

Washed blueberries

Cut up 2 small pineapples

Washed 3 heads romaine

Cooked a big pot of chickpeas

Chopped red peppers, grated carrots in food processor

Roasted 4 heads of garlic

Washed and cut cauliflower for a new recipe I'm making tonight

All this took me about 2 hours, and I used no salt or oil. I roasted the vegs on parchment paper, so there's really no cleanup. I left everything rather plain so I can season it differently every time so we don't get tired of it. I love roasting because there's no work, you just put it in the oven and set the timer! Nothing burns or blackens (hopefully!) because the veggies release their juices and it's essentially like steaming.
My dream is to teach this way of prepping in advance. If I had to get out the chopping boards and pots and pans every time if wanted to eat, I'm not sure I would eat so healthily. It's not hard, but so many people are intimidated by cooking.

By the way---about the frozen spinach; if you take that hard frozen lump of spinach, just put it on a baking pan lined with parchment and let it roast away in a hot oven until it's all thawed out and cooked you don't have all that moisture to squeeze out when it's done! I've ruined so many towels and wasted so many paper towels doing that!

Fast food places are the worst! Sounds harsh, but there it is! If I'm really desperate I'll go to Subway for a salad. My favorite quickie places to go are places like Chipotle, Qdoba's, or Moe's. I think they all serve brown rice now (I ask for a 1/2 portion), and Moe's even has tofu. I pass on the free chips. I'm certain it's high in sodium, but if you're out in the world and hungry you have to make some allowances.

Remember that 2 pounds that I gained while I was away last week---it's gone! Only took 4 days and Nobody's more surprised than me.

oh on the bread, he says to use a pita to make a sandwich, I try to avoid bread cause it seems like alot of calories for what you get and its not to filling. I would rather have a sweet potato or something like that.

The chilli has animal produces in it so if your following the six weeks plan then your couldn't have. I get a side salad and a baked potato (I know carbs) cause then I can have something cooked. But you could also get two side salads instead

but boy you are right fast food is very hard to eat there if your trying to eat healthy

I'm always looking to expand my culinary horizon. Fast food places are either off my list, or have few selection s that I'm willing to eat.

I'm low carb not ETL. So I choose not to eat bread, like hamburger buns, or French fries. How do those two things rate on the ETL plan?

Recently I found that the chilli at Wendy's is 7% net carbs, my rule for myself is 6% or less, so this is only a slight stretch. So Wendy's chilli, a garden salad and a diet soft drink, how do those rate on ETL?

I love that Dr. Fuhrman advises having "at least" 4 servings of fruit a day. AT LEAST! Ha! I can do that. I had a monstrous salad for lunch and that satisfied my hunger---I had a big pile of Spring mix with cucumbers, onion, grated carrots and red pepper, 1/4 avocado, and topped that with 2 black bean/sweet potato patties and fresh salsa. It was heavenly!

I think for dinner tonight I'm just going to have a big plate of watermelon. emoticon

Thanks, Pattie! I had a great birthday---51 is looking good so far!

Today I've been feeling just hungry---ever have days like that? I work in a natural foods store and In the past I would've gotten some vegan junk from the bulk bins, some organic chocolate covered whatever, but today at work I just kept eating fruit: grapes, 2 bananas, and a little apple. Much better choices!

emoticon Queen-Eydie! Your food sounds fantastic, would you like to cook for me? emoticon

I made a big batch of Cajun quinoa, bean and veggie stew, cut up a bunch of fruit and cleaned bags of kale and spinach for smoothies and salads, and chopped some veggies to have ready.

QUEEN-EYDIE,
Happy birthday!

I come from a low carbohydrate background, not exactly ETL, however I find an overlap with Fuhrman's equation:

HEALTH = NUTRITION/CALORIES

High carb things tend to have lots of calories for very few nutrients. I've found that the way I gain a lot of body weight for eating very few calories is when I eat more carbs than is on my plan. To save you from high blood sugar your body stores away excess carbs as glycogen in your muscles and liver. That stuff is essentially carbs packaged with water. That ratio of water to carbs is about 3 to 1, so you immediately can pack on lots of water, and also quickly loose that too.

If you eat yet more carbs your glycogen stores are full and it starts to get stored as body fat to use in the winter.

Did some cooking so I could have some food ready to eat for the next few days. Does anyone else do that? I've done it for years--I can't imagine staying on track without having a few things ready to go when I need food NOW!

I made a huge pan of vegetable-chickpea-tofu scramble (very heavy on the vegetables), cut up some stuff for salads, washed lots of greens, and made a double batch of black bean-sweet potato burgers from the E2L cookbook.

What's everyone else making? emoticon

Back home from the beach and sure enough, came back with almost 2 extra pounds, but am firmly back on track---not that I was ever off really, except for a bit of extra snacking, the olive oil at the Lebanese restaurant (too much! I don't even like it anymore), and walking for miles on the boardwalk and on the beach. That always happens to me when I walk for hours, the next day I invariably gain a few pounds!

So I'm always learning, always tweaking things. Next trip I'll know what to order at the Lebanese place, or get all my meals from the little vegan juice bar, or the food bar at Whole Foods. We always stay at the hotel with a kitchen, and I noticed this time that I didn't take much food with me, or buy much while I was there. I brought several kinds of organic fruits and bought some raw food treats.

I'm excited to say that my husband is really into E2L with me. So cool!

Yesterday we did really well with our food, until we went out for an early dinner and even then it wasn't bad, but it was probably the most oil I've ingested in a while. We went to a great Middle Eastern place with lots of vegan choices. I had a felafel-crusted tofu "steak" served with chickpeas and a wonderful spinach dish, and Garry had a portobello-tofu-spinach wrap that had all the G-BOMBS except berries! It was all delicious, just had the feeling that it was more oil than I wanted.

We arrived at the beach and it's a beautiful day! My birthday is Sunday and my husband wanted to give me an early birthday gift as we were leaving home this morning and it was "Eat To Live" on CD, so we listened to that quite a while on the 6 hour drive and reminisced about some of the crazy things we've done over the years in the name of health. That was fun!

Hi!
Had a great morning walking or wogging. I actually did a few more sprints today and longer counts than yesterday.
Meal plan is as usual and I love it. Fresh and vegan. I have been doing what they call a Raw Til 4. I have cooked starches with a green salad in the evening. Of course I add some favorite items once and awhile. Like a 100% whole grains a few times a week.

The week end is suppose to be hot and busy, and I need to do some baking to share at a pot luck we are invited to, with a huge salad. I do believe it will be bar-b-cue and fresh crawfish before the season ends. I will indulge in corn and potatoes. But no meat for me, I just feel to good to blow it. I would not give this great feeling and progress up for any food item that harms me.

Well I hope all of you are doing well and enjoying this wonderful week.

Walk through your journey with a loving open heart and as well mind. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Laugh, if at nothing else yourself.

Tomorrow my husband and I are going to the beach for just a couple of days. We're determined to stay on program while we're away. I think we have a good plan. I'm taking lots of fruit with us: strawberries and blueberries, grapes, bananas and apples, it's all washed and ready to eat. And I've made a nut butter wrap that's fat with romaine, carrots, and sprouts. I'm also off sugar and want to stay strong with that too. I want to have a couple of treats while we're away, and am interested in seeing what we'll choose. Maybe our idea of what a treat is will have to change---maybe some wildly expensive nut butter, some exotic fruit or vegetable, it'll be fun! Once again, I have to say, I'm so grateful to have a partner who's doing this with me.

I'll check in and let you know how it's going! emoticon

Sun MAY 18th: 145.0

Thanks for starting this thread. It will keep me connected to my focus challenge desire. Because I was doing so great throughout my illness, I feel confused to find myself so far off course. Vegetables and portion control and calories all faded from my consciousness. Here I can work myself back into focus gently.... The low dose daily progesterone may be responsible for my drift away from living on point, but I still have to do my part.

Fresh berries being also back in season will help greatly. I long for the melons and fruits and greens. With connection to you, I can do this. At least my walking during springtime is very good. Once it warms I have that challenge to work around; but for now, a full return of fruits and veggies is what I yearn to put back into balance.

I love you all,
Dale the p tiger

Good idea to start a chat thread... Right now I'm thinking about what vegetables to have for lunch. I have some tomatoes, endives, cucumber.... trying to come up with what would make that a bit more interesting as a salad.
What are YOU having for lunch?
