You do not need a license but insurance is a good idea. If someone had a reaction to your product... it's better to be safe! You must follow cosmological guidelines and label using scientific names and in order of greatest to least quantities or risk the fact you could be found in violation and fined.

I saw someplace that to sell soap...like at bazaars...you must have a license and insurance.
Do you think those people really go to that expense to sell a few bars of soap??

I grew some peppermint and now want to see if I can make some peppermint soap for my
grandson.

Ok you can see my soap in my profile pic. I also posted in my photos on sparkpage
a pic of the two bars I cut. I am ashamed of them, but maybe I will get better.
Now, I did use lard by Armor so maybe that why it is white instead of the normal yellow color.

Purrballs, thank you for responding.
While my soap was as pretty and white as Ivory soap, it cut sorta like Ivory...not
a pretty smoothe cut...sort of broken.
Maybe I need to let it harden more.
I am trying again this afternoon, hopefully.
I took a picture of the loaf and of two slices. ugh.
I will post them later for you to see.

I did work outside and it may have been too windy??

Gamma? Give it time. It may yellow with age. Most people would die for a white bar and add to try to keep it white. It's not the color that's important. It's what it does for your skin.

I just made my first batch of soap ever...3 ingredients. Simple.
All the videos on youtube show this soap yellow. Mine is white. Wondering what happened
to mine and did I do something wrong.
Please do not let this team get inactive...I just started soaping...lol

I've been doing whipped soap lately.

But, then, I've done everything for so long, nothing is new.

Anybody sell any soap on Etsy? I'm flirting with the idea once I get a cutter for my loaves. I can't cut straight no matter what I do and I suppose uniformity would be better if you are going to sell something publicly.

I used a melt and pour glycerin for the pouf soaps.

Just got my lotion bar kit from Bramble Berry. Comes with the scratch recipe and she sent a ton of extra stuff to make like 4 batches and for experimenting. Couldn't resist the earth tone sample kit of micas and I'm loving them to death. Can't wait to make up the bars on Monday.

Do you make your own glycerin soap or do you use melt and pour for the embedded poofs?

What's up everybody, quiet bunch. Gearing up for the guinness soap tomorrow. Can't wait. Did a couple of shower poofs embedded in colored glycerin soap today. Fun to use in the shower as the poof slowly emerges with each use.

So, do you stir in the sea salt right before the pour? Do you put the sea salt in straight in the rock salt size, or grind it a little finer?

got my third batch on the rack, Earl Grey this time. Got some guinness flattening out so I can try that out Monday.

Gal, I make all of my stuff cold process. To the point that I put mine in the refridgerator as soon as I've poured. I don't like the gel stage....I like the smoothness and creaminess of mine without gelling. Alot of folks insulate their molds and so forth.....I don't like that. But that's what is so cool....we're all different! My salt bars are the ones I use for facial soap and if I know it's something I want to be harder.

So far I haven't experimented with oils much, just the liquids. But I love the way the darjeeling soap looks. Batches 1 and 2 are still curing so I haven't gotten to use them yet. I figure I'll experiment with the liquids for a bit then move on to experimenting with oils, then colors, then exfoliants. I'm a process knitter and crocheter and I'm thinking I'm going to be a process soaper too. Explore one element at a time and study it.

And don't hold fast to the 48 hrs you've read about. I've had soap if I didn't unmold it the next morning I was not going to get it out or cut it! Try it first and see how easy it is.

YAY! :) Make sure to line it with freezer paper or plastic wrap. If you don't wood will eventually get eaten by lye. My fav mold is made of plastic. You can use PVC pipe, plastic boxes, I've even heard of some pals using drainpipe from a house! If it's a pipe you need to spray it heavy with pam or other nonstick spray or line it with say quilters template or other plastic pliable sheets then you need to rig up a pushing device to get it out. I loved the plastic ones I had where I did 10 lbs at a time that had dividers for the bars. (slab mold) Had to sell it when I closed my soap shop. :(

Generally speaking..... I don't! If I wanted to about 20 years ago I got some paper test strips. Dampen the soap then rub the strip over. If you've formulated your lye mix correctly and superfatted there is leftover fats that were not saponified so there is no need to worry over what the PH is.

I work at a pet store and we have drops that you can mix with a sample of water to test the PH I'm wondering if it will work for soap.

They mean any olive oil. NO question is silly!

What my research and my own experience have shown me is that the lower the grade of oliveo oil the better the soap is on my skin. As a result I try to only use Olive Pomace oil. This is the last pressing of the fruit and it keeps all the "impurities" in there. Well, the things in the fruit which help the skin ARE the impurities! This means the nutrients, vitamins, etc......still in Pomace! It's also the cheapest!

I have a silly beginner (haven't started yet) question.

When a recipe for soap says olive oil, are they talking like out of the kitchen cabinet olive oil, or should you get a specific olive oil. Is there a cosmetic grade olive oil. I want to be sure of these things while I'm gathering supplies for my first plain base batch.

Good advice....I thought since I knew so little that I would buy the kit. It was suppose to come with a book with recipes in it too. I will do some research online and I have a fabulous library nearby.

Thanks so much for the offer of help! I really appreciate it! I will let you know what happens!!

Have a fabulous weekend!!

My advice? just buy the stuff and make it! If you don't want to spend the money on a book you can get one from the library. Soap is easy to make. you need some stainless steel equipment or plastic, fats, and lye. There are places to buy lye on the internet. I sell it also locally, but there are tons of places. If you want my basic recipe it would be 70% palm oil, 20% coconut oil, and 10% castor oil. www.soaperschoice.com is the cheapest place to get oils. You can use grocery store oils even if you want to....crisco makes a nice soap! www.soapcalc.net/calc/SoapCalcwp.asp is a good place to do your computing. You need to know how many pounds or ounces of oils you want to make and it will tell you how much water and lye you need to use. I always alter it to use only 25% instead of the standard 38% of water to oils it will tell you because I don't want to wait for the water to evaporate out but you need to know that it could cause trace to accelerate. If you want me to walk you through it sometime on the phone email me! Wouldn't be the first time!

I ordered a soapmaking kit from a website I found while searching last week. I was so excited. It looked like a great deal ... everything included I needed at a great price. WOO HOO right? NOT!

Based on the info received on the website, I should have received the kit by now. So I decided to call. All the numbers have been disconnected. When I emailed ... no responses. I called the Chamber of Commerce in the town this place is located and to my surprise the office said I was the 3rd call this week! The are operating without a license. So things means NO perfect KIT.

Back to the drawing board. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hope y'all have a good fourth of July. We closed the biz and I've been busy trying to rebuild our home that got flooded last year.

It's all good - hubby came home in time to get to the grocery store before it closed, so I now have vanilla! lol

I didn't realize until after we came back, though, that I didn't have any food colouring for Easter eggs. I ended up making do with 1) onion skins for yellow, 2) the liquid from pickled beets for purple, and 3) a berry tea I have that I thought would make pink, but it ended up a royal purple. All in pastels, of course. I was tired and it looked like it was going to take a while, so I let them sit in the bowls overnight (the water also contained a fair amount of vinegar). I had forgotten my high-school chemistry and that acid eats egg shell! lol It all turned out OK, but the eggs are just lightly tinted because the surface layer that got tinted the most came away as a scum when I rinsed them.

This is typical me - I try to ad-lib, and something strange and unusual always happens! lol

Anyways, Happy Easter, everyone!!! emoticon

You can always leave the vanilla out.....it enhances chocolate flavor is all. The other thing is you could use something other than vanilla....almond in chocolate is excellent! My family will only allow me to make banana bread when nanners go around here. They refuse to believe me that banana cookies are just as good!

I'm baking today.

Made 2 loaves of pumpkin bread and a crumb cake. I also made ground beef and cabbage for dinner tonight.

I'm looking for a good chocolate cake recipe that doesn't need vanilla, as I just ran out. I also have a TON of bananas that need to be used before they go bad!

So, I got a few things on the go! lol

I haven't bought laundry soap in YEARS!

Just use scrap or make it with close to zero superfat. Shred a bunch...layer an inch or so in a standard bucket or about 3-4 inches in a 5 gallon bucket. Cover with hot water and let sit a day or two. I use my stick blender and then let it sit another day...it gets like snot or gel. I use a cup for a washer.

A creative new use for lye!

Ok now that I have your attention this is really disgusting. We bought the worlds dirtiest restaurant. There was literally inches of guck on the floor under the range. It took me two days to scrape and then clean 22 floor tiles. Pics on sparkpage.

Then I got to a rough area of raw concrete where it's been made flat because of the dirt that is in there. I tried mopping...nothing. Scraping it out with a putty knife is tedious and LONG. So I got this bright idea...it's grease and dirt right? Out comes the lye...I mix it with water and pour it on...scrub lightly with a brush and mop up after it's reached trace which was FAST. I had to do it 3-4 more times but it's CLEAN! wooohooooo

Actually it took me a few seconds to realize when it was reaching that thick pudding stage that it was really trace...then it was like ohmigawsh.....get a wet mop quick!!!!

Thanks for helping Tara! I can also get soap on a stick with just a spoon say when I'm making pine tar soap. If it's really ugly you can always rebatch it or cut in weird shapes and sell it as BUS (butt ugly soap) or samples as you did. There's a different topic for each one of my recipes I've posted so far under general team discussion.

See I learned something new today.

I had some batch really fast one time and I dumped it into a mold and thumped the mold on a hard surface and it smoothed it up.

Had another batch too fast and it wsa non-repairable, so I chopped it into small squares and used them for samples.

Purrballs do you have a page with your recipes, I would love to know about soap on a stick.

At one time I crocheted soap holders and sold them with my soap at shows. They also came in handy for camping and showers. The soap just slip right in and you could use the entire thing to bathe with and then hang it up to dry.

I need some Bay Rum essential oil, does anyone have any recommendations?

Making lotion is so easy why buy a base? Mine is thick thick thick and sometimes hard to get down to the nozzle to get it out. Body butters are da bomb though when it's severe dry problems. I have one listed here under general discussion...check it out!

If you really have to use a base you can always add stearic acid to thicken it but you would need to use a preservative again because the heating action destroys them.

Hey All,

I am just wondering if there is anyone who know how to make a sugar scrub.

I have only know about the really really oily sugar scrubs until i received a very creamy whipped one for christmas.

I am having a hard time finding ones like these in stores, and even if i did, i find that it can get expensive to maintain my bath products. hehe

i am really interested in making it, so if there is anyone who know, i would appreciate any help.

thanks

I'm wondering if it was a cream actually or was it body butter? What I make is a whipped shea body butter and add in a few things. It took my hub's feet from cracked to soft in a week and the doc did NOT believe they were the same feet.

That is a great post about soap making! Thanks for the information and the links.
I bought a product at a craft fair years ago called Heal All cream. I kept the woman's business card in case I wanted to buy more but I never could get a hold of her again. I've found some people that make a similar product but none as good. Do you know of some recipes that I could try to replicate this?

Let me tell you it was an outdoor show. It rained twice on Saturday and Sunday was totally rained out. I didn't even make booth price back. Oh well, live and learn. I have my favorite show coming up in November. It is a small local rennaisance faire.

Thought I'd better let y'all know I'm still alive. Ron's foot has not gotten any better. He took off last week and then got worse. He has a blood condition that will go active once in awhile. An antibody in him goes active, and thinks his red and white blood cells don't belong and kicks them out. This went active. As a result of the foot or the foot as a result of it we aren't certain. End result is that the big guy is in the hospital again for who knows how long. I won't be around for awhile until he's home and settled again. If you need to get ahold of me then you'll need to send me sparkmail because I won't be checking the boards. If anyone is interested it is called idiopathic thrombocytopenia, and he has the added problem of neutropenia on top of it. They don't know what causes it, they can't eradicate it but can only treat it when it's active. It hasn't been active in 2 years this time, but he has lowered the imuran that kind of controls it. I say kind of because it won't always. Needless to say he's back up on imuran...he worries because that can create leukemia. If it's not one thing it's another I swear!

WOW!!! What a fish- is one that big good to eat or do you mount it on the wall? I don't know much about fishing. My mother loved to fish at their pond when she was alive. That was her stress releaser but I guess I took after my dad who didn't have the patience to fish.
I bet your husband was thrilled
Tell him congrats.

Hi Diane, it's nice to have you back in the group. Now we're up to 4 - YAY!
Hope everyone's had a good week. It's been long but good. Am changing jobs next week so will probably be a little stressed but hopefully all will go well.
Some of my bath and body products are starting to sell at the new flea market that just opened up in town so am hoping it will take off and keep me busy.
Have a good weekend everyone.

Best thing to do in my opinion is to go to www.soapcalc.com/calc/soapcalc.asp and play with the oils there to see what qualities each has.

I never make a bar of soap without this calculator. I print it with my recipe and write on it how it turned out, if the water should be cut a little more. If the scent was what I expected, etc. That way when I make that recipe again I will know what to do because I sure will NOT remember. The brain is like a sieve.:o)

Ok here we go:

We have a recipe that uses 33.6 oz of Palm Oil, 9.6 oz of Coconut Oil and 4.8 oz of Castor Oil.
That is a total of 48 oz. But to use the calculator we need %. So divide 33.6 by 48 and you have 70% of palm, divide 9.6 by 48 and you have 20% and divide 4.8 oz by 48 and you have 10%. If you don’t like to use the calculator put your oz of oil in the calculator that you find at www.thesage.com and it will figure the % for you.

1. Under Total Oil Weight click on ounces and type in 48.

2. To the right you will find WATER AS % OF OILS: The default is 38% of the Total Oil Weight. (38% x 48=18.24 oz water) Most of us like to discount water to cut down on the curing time. ( evaporation of excess water in bar of soap). On this recipe the maximum discount would be 22%...any more and you will get a pop-up window warning you not to do that as it is dangerous. For a high content of olive oil I use 25%. Most of my soap recipes are at 27%.

Super Fat/Discount %. I like 5% super fatting but if you want more, highlight and change from 6 to 8%. 9% and 10% will give a softer bar of soap. Exception: When making a 90% coconut oil, 10% castor oil bar of soap I do a 15% super-fat. This will give a hard bar of soap.

3. In the list of oils click on Palm. Go to the right to OIL/FAT, click + and Palm will appear in the window...type in 70. Click on Coconut, go to the Oil/Fat list, click + and Coconut will appear….type in 20. Click on Castor Oil, click + and type in 10. Go to the bottom and click COMPUTE RECIPE. The figures in these two windows will be 48 (total number of oz of oil ) and 100 ( 100%----you will get a pop-up window if you do not have 100%....it will tell you to add or subtract a certain amount to get 100%)

4. FRAGRANCE RATIO: Click empty window and type in .5, .75 or 1 and click COMPUTE RECIPE again. This will give you the amount you will need to add to this recipe. I'm going to use 1 and the amount is 3 oz.

5. Your recipe is under ounces. Always make sure you scale is set for the one you want to use.

Water 16.32
Lye 6.786
Palm 33.6
Coconut 9.6
Castor Oil 4.8

If you want to use grams they are in the next column.

6. Soap Qualities: There are two columns. The one on the left is the individual oils. Click on Castor Oil and Hardness

is 0, Cleansing 0, Condition 98, Fluffy 90, Stable 0, Iodine 86. Click on any oil to see its individual properties.

The right hand column is for the recipe. This recipe is:

Hardness: 51
Cleansing: 14 For a gentle cleansing, 10 to 15 is a good norm. Can this be higher? Yes it can. The cooks choice.
Conditioning: 46 If you want more moisturizing, add butters or oils that will raise this figure without getting the iodine over 69.
Fluffy: 23 and Stable: 37 When these two numbers are this high you will have loads of lather.

Iodine: 48 With this figure so low you don't have to worry about the bar going rancid. I keep this figure under 70.

INS: 163 the magic number is 160. Do all my soaps fall on this number? No, my Acne bar's INS is 242, my most moisturizing bar is 138. I checked my recipes and they run from 152-242. And like I have said before I really don't worry about this a lot. But when you are learning at what each oil will do, try to get that magic number. But don't let it ruin your day or dampen your desire to make soap.

If you want to see what changes when you get the magic number, change palm to 75%, coconut to 17% and castor oil to 8%., click on compute recipe. Now you have the magic number.

FATTY ACIDS: Have you ever thought about making a bar of soap that had all the fatty acids in it?

This list is not complete as far as listing all the oils under the different fatty acids. If you want to know what fatty acids are in a specific oil, just click on the oil in the oil/butter list and they will appear in the left hand column under fatty acids.

Lauric: The only one I watch is the Lauric. This is found at a high amount in Babassu, Palm Kernel and Coconut Oil. It is related to hardness, cleansing and fluffy. Lauric Acid is what is anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. This bar has 10. The highest you can have with coconut oil is 48. I have found that it even starts clearing up problem complexions at 10.

Linoleic: This is found at a high amounts in Sunflower (70), Safflower (75), and Evening Primrose Oil (80). It is related to conditioning
Linolenic: This is not found in all oils. Canola (9), Evening Primrose (9), Soybean (8) It is related to conditioning.
Myristic: It is found at a high amount in Babassu, Coconut and Palm Kernel Oil. It is related to cleansing and fluffy.
Oleic: It is found in all oils but in different amounts, the highest is in Sweet Almond (71), Apricot Kernel (66), Hazelnut (75), and Olive (72). It is related to conditioning.
Palmitic: Cocoa Butter (28), Lard (28), Milk Fat/Butter (28), Palm Oil (44), and Beef Tallow (28). It is related to hardness and stable lather.
Ricinoleic: Castor Oil (90). It is related to fluffy lather.
Stearic: Stearic acid (99), Kokum Butter (56), Illipe (45), Sal (44), Mango Oil and Butter (42), Shea (40), and Cocoa Butter (33). This relates to hardness and stable lather.

The numbers that I look for:

Olive is the only oil that does not stick to the rules. Olive oil does things that it shouldn't be able to do. We all know that you can make a beautiful bar of soap with 100% olive and it will get hard, it will clean and it doesn’t go rancid.

Hardness: 50 and up ( 100% olive will be hardness of 15 so you would discount the water to as low as 22% to get a hard bar)
Cleansing: 13 - 15 for my bath soap, 46 for mechanic soap (100% castile will have 0%)
Moisturizing: at least 45 and up from there
Fluffy: I really would like this to be in the 20s but with the recipe I use now it is 17 or 18 (100% olive will be 0%)
Stable: I like this one to be in the 30s. ( 100% olive will be 15%)
Iodine: 67 is the highest I will let a recipe go and so far it hasn’t gone rancid. ( 100% olive will be 82%)

INS : This was in the book Essentially Soap, written by Dr. Robert S. McDaniel. 160 being the magic number for soap. Can you make soap that has a higher number? Sure you can. Will it be a good soap? If it pleases the cook, that is all that matters. I have soap that the INS is 242.

Don’t let the INS ruin your joy of soap making.

Trudy

I'm open to any information about soapmaking-I know absolutely nothing about it. the one for the face you mentioned sounds interesting. I also am interested in a lotion for excema. The husband of my flea market lady has it and was looking for something that would help.
I need to touch base with you too about the extra salts you have (If you still have extra). I got busy with our fridge going out and quitting my job and got side tracked.

Soap in general or the scrubby one? To put sand or make salt bars you need a pretty heavy trace before adding the "scrub" or it will sink which can be a nice effect all on it's own. Salt bars are great for facial bars. Contrary to what you'd think they are actually moisturizing. Think of a salt shaker....in summer it clumps because it pulls water out of the air to itself. So if you have a fine layer of salt on your skin it does the same thing! I add about 3/4 salt of what I had oils...so if I use a pound of oils then .75 pound is what I'd have of salt. Let me know what all you want to know on soaping.

Good morning, how do you make your soap? I've thought about trying it but haven't got the courage up yet. I ordered from the company you recommended. I really like their products. I'm starting to get a little more interest in my products so I'm hoping that will keep up. The newest little shop that I put my products in is having a grand opening celebration this weekend so I'm hopeful. Let me know more about what you make when you have time

How's it going? I'm going to be making lotion tomorrow and hopefully a new soap soon. I found the finest grain sand I've ever seen at a newer sandbar in the river. I brought a bunch back to make some mechanic/gardening soap!
