emoticon I am trying to reply to the Resteraunt posts so if this ends up elsewhere please excuse me. I saw many great eating location suggestions but I didn't see(but might have missed! Lol ) my new favorite Arlington establishment, the Copperwood Tavern in Shirlington. My husband & I went there instead of the usual Carlyle for our anniversary in January. It was fabulous. Great food, great service. A tad bit pricey but that's normal for the area plus they serve from farm to table food so it's worth it! We are already planning to go back for brunch which I hear is great too. I know this topic is a bit old. But I just joined about 2 weeks ago so forgive me for being late!😃

I had seafood in parchment. Expensive. We'll, service. The waitress had been there about 30 years. The Birchmere entertainment was fun. Didn't realize they had food there. But it looked like stuff I'm allergic to, so I was happy I ate earlier.

Cafe Oggi. Very interesting service.healthy food choices. Seasoning kind of bland for my husband who had the daily apecial-sea bass, and daughter who had potatoes and pork. I had salmon and risotto. Good seasoning.

Went to Mark's Duckhouse. The folks were nice. They got us some really neat food. I tried several new things Id never seen before. I'm from the west coast so my fam always ordered certain things. This was a treat. I like jiu tsai-kind of a grass veggie.

the workplace ordered from Pie Tanza. I emailed them about gluten free options and they had salad already on the menu, but when I asked, they offered a gluten free penne pasta dish. Found out there were more gluten free friends at work in the process.

wow. Tyson's corners Panera bread was good the first two times. I had a Spinach Power. But this time, they had added more veggies-i'm allergic to them. ugh! I wanna go back to the original kind.

ate at olive garden and was disappointed with the service at both the Tyson's corners and the falls church locations. food was good. I was sad that the one at falls church cooked the risotto in peanut oil. I believe it was different than the oil at the other olive gardens, but i'm not sure. all I know is my throat started itching. luckily it doesn't go farther than that.

I just had dinner on Wednesday evening at Cote d'Or in Arlington / Fairfax. I have passed this place so many times and now I regret not stopping in. It's a French restaurant with wonderful appetizers, main dishes and desserts. I was with a group. The entrees are unique; several desserts I had never heard of before.

They have some specials during the week that can take the sting out of the cost. I think Early Birds run M-F from 5 to 6:30 and gets you 3 courses for $20.

The night I was there the special pricing was 2 entrees for the price of 1 as long as you also ordered an appetizer or dessert.

Parking is available at the nearby Econolodge (even if the signs suggest something else) if the tiny parking lot is full.

Pulcinella's in McLean has good Italian food -- not just pasta with sauce (although that is great as well), but lower calories veal and chicken plates with veggies.

Pretty reasonably priced as well.

In 1991 that still would have been Bull Feather's but it could have been on the corner (100 King) which has never remained one restaurant for very long in all the time it has been there. I grew up in Alexandria and 1991 would have been the college years...so I wasn't around much. So maybe I just missed that restaurant altogether

Bilbo Baggins and Il Porto are still there. The Fish Market is likely a much smaller place than you remember. Sadly Ecco closed many years ago and the building now houses a nice restaurant called Overwood, Portners lost a lease dispute with the building owners who wanted to put in a Book Binders (which sadly never lived up to the name and also closed) the space now houses a pretty good restaurant called Colombia Firehouse. Not sure about Fitzgeralds, could you mean Murphy's? If so, it is still there and thriving as you remember it.

Bob, may I suggest that you try out some independently owned restauants? That is a great list of chain restaurants (other than Coastal Flats) but surely there are some independently owned restaurants in the Tyson's area that are worth the trip on the beltway. Let me know when you find some. I have a friend who is always trying to meet half way between Alexandria and Centreville and need some ideas.

Come over to the Tysons area: Maggianos, Legal Seafood, Capital Grill, Wildfire, P.F. Changs, Cheesecake Factory, Brio, Gordon Biersch, Coastal Flats. In McLean try J. Gilberts, Kazan's, or Capri. In Vienna try Cafe Renaissance or Basins. Get an account on OpenTable. There are lots of great restaurants listed and you will earn points toward gift certificates for making reservations using it. Great app for cell phones as well.

I would offer another option to KATS0929's list, Artie's is part of the Great American Restaurants in Fairfax. Any of the restaurants in this group of restaurants offer delicious meals at relatively reasonable prices (meals start around $10 but if you order steak or the fresh fish of the day may approach $30). My husband and I had our wedding dinner at Artie's!

Their salads are great and even just looking at the menu to get ideas for your own salads at home is a great idea.

Sweetwater has three locations and all have in restaurant brewed microbrews.

The menu choices may be a little limited, but you can find healthier options - enjoy.

Old Town is great, though I have a couple places to add to the list (I love the restaurants you listed, SPARKACTRESS, they're all great...especially Charthouse :) )

Red Curry is great...went there for sushi last night and it was AMAZING. I also like the Greek Restaurant, Tavern Kretekou, and Cafe Salsa (they have a really yummy and healthy seafood salad). Hope you guys gets to try them out if you havent already emoticon

Ha ha, was thinking of what to write here and saw that most of my suggestions had already been suggested (BTW, whoever said Clyde's that place is so good my sister and her husband had their rehearsal dinner there!!!).

Old Town is my favorite place to go for food and you can usually find menus with lots of good stuff that's good for you! I think someone suggested the Chart House already (a little pricey, but fresh fish cooked deliciously...just stay away from the crab dip!). I love Chadwicks (hummus on the menu holla!), Fish Market (crab legs!!!), Jackson 20 (thought dangerously delicious sugary drinks) and Joe Theismann's (my family has gone to Joe's for so long my mom even got hit on by Joe back in the day!).

Anyways, all these places are super tasty and really do what they can to make you happy (I'll have veggies instead of fries).

Happy dining!

My husband and I hit upon a really good restaurant strategy this past weekend. I knew I should order the grilled swordfish club sandwich, but I really *wanted* a cheeseburger. So we ordered one of each and split them in half. Still a splurge, but the fish did cut the calorie total significantly.

Definitely Shirlington, as some of you mentioned (Aladin's, Busboys and Poets, even Guapos are all great choices as they all offer healthy, balanced meals)..I was surprised to find that Capitol Brewery had some GREAT options. I've gone twice recently and had the veggie burger with a side of fruit and the seared ahi tuna salad, both of which were very good. I will say that I asked for no dressing on the salad, but I had a few avocado slices on the side and didn't even need it :)

Also, if you're willing to go out to Tysons Corner or Fair Lakes, Sakura is great for sushi.

Lebanese Taverna also has a wide array of fresh, healthy foods, like grilled seafood and chicken, tabouleh, hummus, and all sorts of healthy appetizers and salads. They have 7 locations, though I would highly recommend the one in Arlington, in Pentagon Row.

Hope this helps!

My go-tos for a meal that won't blow the bank dietwise are Shiki Sushi in Ballston mall and Hard Times (Clarendon). You do have to be careful at Hard Times (stick to chili with beans and a piece of cornbread, skip the beer and apps, and you'll finish at around 650 calories. It's also a good choice at Nats Park.) Both restaurants are group friendly.

Has anyone eaten at Food Matters, off Duke St in Alexandria. They use fresh local produce when possible, and it's easy to find healthy meals. Last night, my husband had one of their "make your own salads" which are great and I had salmon cakes (not fried or greasy!) with a side of bok choy. I highly recommend it! They have a great wine selection too.

I love Clyde's. And they use fresh, seasonal food. Their tomato salad and crabcakes are great!

There are so many great restaurants in the area that my head swirled with suggestions!

I'll add my vote for the Carlyle Grand in Shirlington. Hand's down; it's my favorite restaurant in the DC Metro. For a lighter dish, I'd recommend the Hong Kong Style seabass (which you can also get at Coastal Flats in Tyson's). On the not so light side, the Filet and Crabcake special; though it really is just a special and they don't always have it available.

In moderation, these are some great ones:

* Ray's Hell Burger (between Rosslyn and Courthouse); simply amazing burgers.

* Cafe Assorti (across the street from Ray's); eastern European fare. If you're careful you can eat healthy-ish here but the display case of desserts always lures me in.

* Valentinos Pizza (Duke and Beauregard); some of the best slices of pizza I've ever had.

Some local favorites near my home:

* the Duke Kabob House (at Duke & Beauregard); you can eat fairly healthy if your mindful of what you eat and take it easy on the bread

* Illusions Thai cafe (on Beauregard); it's a bit of a dive and the bar can be loud but they have great panang, green curry chicken and chicken noodle soup (think pho).

If anyone is looking for a place near Courthouse, I recommend Minh's on Wilson (Vietnamese). Really, really good carmelized salmon as well as rice noodle dishes w/ grilled meats. I really like it and find it's a lighter option than Thai food.

Alladin's is definitely good, and there are tons of locations in the area (Springfield and Arlington as well as Shirlington). Broadway Maven, have you ever gone to Luna Grill and Diner? I went there today and though my egg-white omelet was runny, their food seemed to be pretty good. Alright home fries and great whole wheat toast, though I'm not sure what it says about a restaurant when they best thing they offer is their toast. If I go back, any menu suggestions? (I do want to go back to Bilbo Baggins. Next time Ill see about their Butternut Squash Soup).

I've gone to Bilbo Baggins many times. I've never had a problem with there food. My favorite order is their butternut squash soup and some kind of salad. Delicious, healthy and filling.

I'd also recommend Aladin's, Carlyle, Extra Virgin and Bussboys and Poets all in Shirlington. They all are delicious and have a plethora of healthy options. Depending on how fancy you want your food to be will determine where you go. Check them out!

Goodness! Word of warning on The Bilbo Baggins place. I went back a couple days ago for lunch, ordered the same thing I got the first time, and had to send it back and then throw out the second order because the smell coming off it was terrible. I think they used some rancid produce. Anyway, my suggestion, if you go there, don't go for lunch! Dinner however, was great. And I'm still waiting to try their Sunday brunch.

Oh man, SO glad you asked this! I went to this restaurant called the Bilbo Baggins Cafe and Restaurant last Thursday and it blew my taste-buds away! It was fabulous! I had the Baked Brie en Croute, Sam's Garden Pizza, and Lord of the Rings Cake (this was obviously before I was tracking my calories, though I suppose now I would order the same thing only eat less of it!) and it was one of the best meals I've ever eaten at a restaurant! http://www.bilbobaggins.net/ just copy and paste that to your address thingy, they have their menu online. The one bad point, they don't list the calories for their menu items. But to balance that out, note that at the bottom of every page of their menu they say something like "think globally, eat locally", or some other such healthy/environmental phrase. The service was fabulous, the food was heavenly, and they are near the water in Old Town Alexandria.

Has anyone tried Pizzaiolo on Fern in Alexandria? It just opened. I understand there are several locations. Has anyone tried any of them?

May I suggest Food Matters in Cameron Station. The chef likes to source food locally and everything is made fresh.

There are tons of restaurants in the area -- what are your criteria for picking restaurants and maybe I can give a recommendation or two

I'm looking for some good restaurants for my dinner group to try out. We've been together for a few years so many of the standards we've gone to. Any suggestions?
