Drove all day with D12 on Tuesday to get S24 for the holiday. Left D15 with a friend so she could go to chemistry/finance co-op. We will attempt school on Monday and D15 and I will definitely make it to chorus Monday evening.

How are each of you handling Thanksgiving Week. Do you take days off school?
We take off Wednesday through Friday. Might take of the following Monday this year, too, because the children we babysit have it off and we might make it a party day. :)

My girls are both semi sick so the day is progressing slowly. Think we will keep taking it semi easy this afternoon and look for winter items in the storage bins after the chemistry and finance work is done for tomorrow's co-op classes.

Has anyone heard that high school drop outs are being listed as homeschoolers? This way the public schools don't show a number of dropouts?

I recently heard about this from a homeschool dad and then I realized HSLDA posted an article about this very topic.

Sometimes we have to take the good with the bad!

We are truly starting back to school full time the week of August 26th. University Community Chorus starts that evening and chemistry co-op class starts the following day. Working today to figure out what subjects we want to take.

Seems like D15 doesn't get to choose an electives this year since personal finance is offered at co-op...

Bible Psalms Book III/Proverbs
Elective Personal Finance
English World Lit II
Fine Arts Chorus… and possibly trumpet
Foreign Language Latin II
History World History II
Math Algebra II
Physical Fitness ParkRun
Science Chemistry w Lab
Extra curricular is musical theatre 3 plays spaced throughout academic year

D12 has room for an elective and fine arts selection…

Bible Evidence of Grace
Elective ?
English Grammar/Spelling/World Literature/Writing
Fine Arts ?
Foreign Language Latin/Greek Vocabulary
History World History
Math Pre Algebra I
Physical Fitness ParkRun
Science General Science w Lab
Extra curricular is musical theatre 3 plays spaced throughout academic year

Looks like not much is needed in the way of books to order...a few vocabulary workbooks and a pre algebra one. The personal finance workbook is part of the co-op fee.

We won't start school until September. However, the kids we babysit start this month and it irritates me because I have to get them on the school bus on the days I have them. I HATE following public school schedule. But it's that, or don't babysit...and we enjoy the time with those kids and the income helps. Sigh.

School unofficially starts up today with first read through cast meeting for Frozen Jr. D15 has been double casted as Sven meaning she will do 2:4 shows as Sven and the other two as part of the ensemble. D12 will be in the ensemble all four shows. They are so excited!

Hey!!!!!
Have you all discovered the website called 'Seterra', yet!
Oh my GOODNESS, it's going to be amazingly helpful to my home-schooling!
It has online interactive geography games. I discovered it Saturday night, and have learned 70 % more than I've ever known before, already.

I've done the States, African countries, Middle Eastern countries, South America/ Latin America, and now am learning Canada. Got them MEMORIZED.
Woo hoo!

I think you all might enjoy, and benefit from, this VERY SIMPLE tool to connect with other home-schooling mothers.
You will need to create a name to log in, but it is free. It comes with a daily question about how you're struggling or feeling, or how you do things, or how you feel about such and such.

(My screen name is simply 'Susan', if you get on there and wonder if I've posted. But I don't know if there are any other 'Susan's '. )

I tried the link! I was so frustrated at first because I couldn't figure out how to get the drill to accept the answer I gave and go on to the next problem...until I realized that all I had to do was ANSWER THE PROBLEM CORRECTLY lol to get the drill to automatically advance.

Remember not to lose your focus! What is it that you want your kids to know solidly?
Is there anything you wish them to know before Thanksgiving?
Maybe you can get all the Pilgrim dates down, and the geography! Do your kids know the continents and oceans yet? Better check in on your older kids just to make sure!

Does anyone have any good recommendations for books to read on the Thanksgiving topic?

Cool!
I'm brushing up on MY Math skills on CTC online math! Funny that you said it.

I get so used to thinking about what a bad education I had and don't really feel too informed, that I forget that 'it's not over, til it's over!' and that I can CONTINUE my education as high as I dang well please!

Earlier this year, one of my sisters said a word that I had never heard before and she repeated it. I still didn't know what she was talking about. She looked at me really strange and somehow I figured out it was a higher math term.
Funny, because SHE took college prep, and I did not, so she couldn't figure out why I wouldn't know it. It was an awkward moment for me, admittedly.

We are using CTC Math this year, an online subscription. Last week we signed up and I let the kids fiddle with the site to get used to it.
Today I got the weekly report on what they each did. It was really cool.

Wow, it's been a while since anyone has written here!

I'll take a turn!
Our home-school doesn't officially start until the day after Labor Day.
I just ordered some new curriculum, making a change from what we've used for years. I needed something DIFFERENT!
I ordered the family subscription (1 year) for CTC Math...online teaching. I think it's going to be nice.
Then I ordered Writing Strands, Easy Grammar, Apples (spelling exercises for middle school students. We also bought the Constitutional Literacy DVD set by Michael Farris (Home-School Legal Defense Association)...and some other minor things.

We got our computer re-vamped, updated and it's working SPLENDIDLY! I remember those early years of computers, boy....they clogged up so fast, and our programs never lasted long. lol. Hopefully, we are past that stage?
Hubby also ordered me a 'new' computer to use in my Genealogy/Photo/Craft room to help me with Mom's stuff I 'inherited'.
I spent all day yesterday rearranging two rooms in the back apartment. I put the computer in the furthest room where I can shut the door off from company.
But then my WI-FI couldn't reach it, which I didn't really need, but Hubby solved the problem for me.
Oh yeah! We also got a newer version of Mavis Beacon's typing tutorial. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

ohhhh no, I KNEW what they were implying, lol. oy.

School is going to be getting easier over the next years, since all my students are readers and can be more independent. We WILL have Little Ones among us, which we must work around, since I babysit 3 kids and a 4th is due in November. Hope it goes smoothly, because I'm not turning down watching a newborn! lol :)
Babysitting is really good for my youngest girls who didn't get experience caring for younger siblings.
Plus the extra money is super helpful.

And of course, NOWWWWW, I'm starting to get the hang of this home-schooling thing...finding some good curriculum ideas and being able to AFFORD them.

Just 10 more school days for me and I'm 'outta here!'.

Not quite, my graduating student won't be done until the end of summer probably, but he's going to be working mostly independently.

Received my ds's engineering program book yesterday. I think I have just his art (elective) curriculum left. He's doing math and reading over the summer break. (and starting an egg selling business) emoticon ..

Thank you for the info on the spelling. I'm going to look into the one you suggested. I was researching All About Spelling to see if it would help him.

A few of my kids have trouble with spelling also.
My son, has problems with pronunciation and that slowed spelling down.
This year I got the Apples program for struggling middle schoolers. Really LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. and can't wait to get it for the younger kids.

I would recommend going VERY SLOWLY with ONE spelling rule...maybe even a month!
I always panic to get things finished for the year and then realize they didn't retain what I rushed them through. It's hard to teach the way you FEEL IS NEEDED when you have outside pressures making demands about how long to teach etc.

So anyway, Take the o-u-g-h group. That thing has SIX SOUNDS!
I made up a sentence that uses each of those sounds to help us remember them all.

"I bought no new stuff about coughs."

(let me know if YOU have one that also works)

Anyway, have them write out the letter group 3x each day, and maybe even that sample sentence.
Then I like to give the kids an old worn out copy of a favorite book and let them circle things in them (like nouns, verbs, etc.). I would have them circle every o-u-g-h word they can find and then tell you its sound.

We can do this with all the spelling groups. I'm done rushing to meet someone else's deadline. Go slow, but go deep. Get it ingrained.

I had a friend in high school who loved to read but she had horrible spelling. She had two girls and one of them had the same issues she did.

My ds seems to have something similar going on. What I don't understand is how he can spell a challenging word and miss a supposedly simple word. =/

D13 and I were amazed (utterly) that D11 when asked to say the short vowel sounds still stumbled today. I guess you could say she's a lopsided fifth grader. She can read at a high school level but struggles with word analysis. This keeps her learning in spelling at a snail's pace at best. I try to not make a big deal over it but my brain just can't comprehend her way of thinking. I wish I could know. Feel like I've tried every angle. She has a great memory so it's not that.

We are gearing up for our annual homeschool expo on April 7th. Coming up with a topic is usually the biggest hurdle.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

We did a beach day on Labor Day. Yesterday we spent a lot of time on math. I'm hoping it doesn't constantly soak up our time. Any suggestions? The girls like to get done with a lesson rather than stopping in the middle of it but I was thinking we could stop at sections if too much time is ticking away. I feel we really need to hit more subjects daily.

We actually use Teaching Textbooks. I discovered it last year and it has been wonderful. It is self grading. It is a little expensive but many people in my homeschool group sell theirs at a decent price. I set me up as a student too so I go through what they do. I really need a refresher course on upper math so I like this.

CAPMom - it is hard when we go through tough times. I like homeschooling because we can speed up at times and slow down at others.

I suppose tomorrow will be all things Eclipse. emoticon emoticon

Blessings,

ETERNALMINDED — Tell me more about math on the computer? On Fridays we do math on KahnAcademy to change things up a bit.

C-A-PMOM — I've dropped 21 pounds this year and have managed to keep it that way. Both of my daughters enjoy youth opera theatre.

Today I'm trying to put all the wonderful activities/opportunities our community offers into a planner so that time is set aside to actually do them (or at least some of them). I think I will look for everything we could possibly do and then we'll each pick what we want to do the most and make them happen.

We are doing well I have lost 35 lbs since March and i am feeling a lot better I am working very hard to make this a great school year. We are very active in church and my older 2 boys are in the civil air patrol and all my boys are in the theatre.

My two older girls are all finished up with their summer college jobs and will be at home visiting with us for another full week. We will then resume full school days. I have two girls at home, 10 and 13. Looking forward to this last year before my oldest at home hits full high-school mode.

Hi y'all!
How is the end of your homeschooling year going? Or is it the end, do you homeschool year round!? We do, just the basics to keep their minds going and keep them from watching TV and playing games all day.

We're moving! We were given 90 days, so big sigh of relief there, plenty of time to find that just almost perfect home, we are buying this time (didn't want to buy the one we are in). So excited! But that means lots of cleaning and decluttering!!

Finally going to buy Math U See this week! I'm so excited! Can't wait! Now to buy the botany books I wanted... I have a long list of books I want to get!! But then what HS Mom doesn't, LOL

What is your must have book for school, your favorite curriculum or planner? I need ideas for this next year, especially in grammar! We are working on writing this summer. The girls are reading books and writing book reports on each chapter, so a chapter a day... ODD has already read the first 5 chapters. She didn't want to read the book, and then she got so caught up in it she just kept reading!! I love that my girls love to read!!

I have been exercising since mid-December and am finding that my girls are spending more time outside than ever before and often want to come with me. I never know what the day will bring. Some days I walk alone. On other days one or both of them walk with me. Sometimes they ride bikes or scooters and accompany me that way. One day we were a biking, scootering, and walking caravan. Now even some of their neighborhood friends will ask if we are going to take a walk. It's really become a habit.

As for new foods, I'm trying to cook and bake new things each week. Last week I made a lower fat pumpkin pie and a healthier version of scones. No one even scowled. As soon as I go to the store this week, I'm going to try a spinach lentil soup that a fellow Love to Cook team member suggested on her blog. I've never had lentils before, but I love spinach in soups. I guess you could say I'm changing my family, one recipe at a time.

I'm excited to say that since I started eating healthier a couple months ago, I noticed that the kids are starting to make healthier choices on their own and have been more willing to try some of the new recipes I am making. Yippee!

ETERNALMINDED - Thanks, I was wondering about the journals, I was thinking of getting them, and will get them for sure now!!

KOHLRABIGIRL - Snow can be so motivating! It snowed here once this year and the kids were so focused on getting work done so they could go out and play. We took a half day and the next day off, because snow doesn't last long here in GA!

Lots of changes, small ones, going on here in our homeschool, not just the curriculum. We've finally decided that ODD needs tutoring, so DH is going to check into that. Though honestly if we get the Math U See (we finally decided with DD's help that we are going to) I don't think she'll need it. I'm going to move her to sitting right beside me except for classes when she can't, like spelling, and be her study buddy. She needs the extra help, she's never done the type of work our new curriculum is asking her to do, so she's not doing well, even though to me it is obvious stuff so I'm scratching my head. But, must remember this is new to her!

Hello!

We started late today, but the snow on the ground is motivating the girls to keep at it. They so desire to be out in it. We will do a half day and call it quits. The snow is calling us!

Eternalminded- Is his appointment tomorrow? This happened once along time ago to my oldest daughter when we ate an Asian dish. It continued for about six weeks never to return again, at least not yet. I assume it was a seasoning. We never had her tested. Constant itching is never fun. Hopefully it will end soon.

This is Day 16 of these hives - actually today they have not appeared although it still is covered head to toe from previous. I hope to get in here later today and chat!

Oh - I love Apologia science. We have used it for a long time. I would highly advise the journals. I know some people just read and do the experiments without the journal but for me the journal completes it. My 14 year old son is doing the high school Biology right now. We also do their Bible series.

ETERNALMINDED, so sorry to hear about your youngest! Hope you discover what it is quickly!

I have a question: What do you guys think of Apologia science? I think that is what I want to do, I read the reviews and it seems good, but I wanted to ask if any of you guys have done it or know of it?

I've not been on SP much as I've been sick, and homeschool has been the bare minimum, I'm hoping this will go away soon so we can get back to our regularly scheduled program, LOL. I've been checking out the Library, and I think we are going to try to become active in it. I like the programs I've read about, the libraries are not too far from us, well, one of them is, but we just won't go to that one.

How do you find events in your area? My oldest is considered a 'tween' and I need to get her in activities soon, we want to wait till she turns 11 to do so, but I'm thinking we may early, she only has one friend that we see a lot of and have play dates with, and they have been butting heads a lot here recently. Need to find her some new friends. But she does not make friends easily (wonder where she got that from...).

This has been a crazy past two weeks! I hope to get back in here soon. My youngest has had a severe reaction to something and has had whelps (hives) all over his body since the 25th of last month! Ugh! We have an apt next Friday to have him tested for allergies. The apt can not get here soon enough!
KOHLRABIGIRL - thank you for your comments on my page. I have not left the group - just been crazy busy!
Welcome to the team!

Hello!

It's been a trying week for us. It is tech week for the girls, but the performances are tonight—dress rehearsal, tomorrow night, and Sunday afternoon. Sanity should return after the weekend.

Ali- I think my post was confusing to you, It was a response to crouchingflea not from crouchingflea. I'm new at posting and am figuring I need to start my posts to all and direct responses to individuals. Where were my manners? Sorry about that.
I guess you could say I'm an emotional eater, too. I also eat when I'm bored or doing tasks like grading papers. I find that I am doing much better since I have been consistently tracking what I eat. I can no longer eat a bag full of marshmallows or potato chips. Who wants to admit to that on their permanent record?
I did homeschool the older three all the way through and have that goal for the two at home. By the way, a week ago or so I posted to the team wall: Hello! I'm over 50 and have 5 children: 1 in grad school, 2 in college, and two at home (12 and 9). All were homeschooled from day one.

Decided that the toys must be out of site, in the other room. Started out where youngest DD's bear could be seen on the arm of the couch and now it is not as much of a fight to get the toys into the other room. She still wants to carry her lovey all over the place, but during school is not as much of a battle now. I'm hoping she will grow out of it soon.

We started out in PS, my youngest went to a christian pre-k, but oldest went to K-1st in PS. It changed her. My sweet loving girl turned attitude and sullen. Then the bullying started. And she has ADHD, so the meds started. She was so young! So we decided enough was enough and DH finally gave in and agreed to try homeschooling and stop the meds. There are days when I wish I had more time to myself, but I figure there will come a day when I will wish I didn't have so much time to myself! I love truly getting to know my girls

I'm also an emotional eater. I have anxiety and that is a trigger to eat. I'm trying a paint by number to see if that calms me. I also am learning to sew, but can only do that at night when the school stuff is cleared away. I crochet, but have not been in the mood since I started teaching a crochet class at co-op.

Morning All,

How is everyone doing this week? We are staying warm. We live in GA so our weather is like a roller coaster up and down.

Anyone else an emotional eater? I am and I have been gaining. Today i am working to get everything under control.

Karri - what did you decide?

Crouchingflea - you are right, homeschooling has helped us teach to the different learning styles. Did you homeschool all the way through?

Have a great day.
Blessings,

CROUCHINGFLEA — The beauty of homeschooling is you choose what is right for you, your child, and your family. What is right for us, may not be what is right for you.

I would be distracted by toys on the table, so that is not an option in our home. It has been no toys at the table for each of my children since transitioning from the highchair. At one time this was an issue for my youngest daughter. If there was an extra chair, she was allowed to place her "child" on it. If not, she could place it on the bookshelf and still see it. She decided on her own just to visit with it on breaks, and now only once in a while.

My son, now in grad school, was and still is a twiddler. Having something in his hands helps him to think through things. This was allowed as long as the object being twiddled stayed under the table where I wasn't distracted by it. As parents we chose the path not to medicate him for his repetitive movements. I stayed sane, the learning environment was positive, and his individuality wasn't squashed.

Morning,

It's nice to see some posting here.

I have 2 children and my baby is a senior and dual enrolled so I just help where I can. I miss teaching them, but it's roots and wings.

I wish I had an answer to your question but mine just loved having their dog with them and since the dog has a mind of her own you never knew if she would hang with them or not.

Enjoy every minute, every season has its blessings,

Blessings,

Morning all!

Rough start to the day, youngest DD (about to turn 9) is having a hard time with not having her bear with her all the time. I think it is time to start having him sit where she can see him, but not constantly clinging to him. She's very upset about it but finally relented. Anyone else have this kind of problem? Is she too old for a lovey, or am I expecting too much? I feel like she should be able to go through the day without having the bear in her lap all day. It's in the living room on the arm of the couch where she can see it.

We just started a new math, social studies and penmanship. I even got the girls excited about it to. They like that the math is easy right now (it's all review, we are starting at the beginning of the book). Penmanship they do not like, I haven't made them write much til now, so we are starting out slow with it and doing it in little bits throughout the day.

Lots going on, so I better go get to it! Hope you have a fantastic day!

Morning,

Happy 2017 to everyone! This team seems to be dying out. I hope you all have a great start to 2017. I will check in and see if anyone is here periodically.

Shakkerattleroll - homeschooling is what you make of it. God will equip you if this is the ministry He has called you to. The virtual schools get different reviews, most true homeschoolers are not a fan as it puts you in a box. Homeschoolers tend to march to the beat of their own drum, we believe there are teachable moments everywhere. You can learn to do a research project by researching "your passions" if that is chocolate it can be on chocolate. Government can be learned through joining Teenpact and spending a week at the capital. History can be learned during the Olympics and taking that season to do a unit study. I am sure you get the point. We also may take a family day on Wednesday because grandma comes to town and school on Saturday. You follow the public school schedule with the virtual school and if that is what you know it will work out great for you. I hope this helps.

Hey if any one is reading this today, please pray for my daughter. My daughter is being tested today in many ways. Please pray for the Lords peace no matter what.

Blessings,
Ali emoticon

Good morning to each of you dear people--I have a question and I do not know where to quite ask so thought this might be a good place. My son is wanting to be homeschooled. I am not experienced enough to actually do it (I can't do Algebra and Geometry, etc) So I was thinking about doing a virtual school one that is accredited in my state so he can get his diploma has anyone done a virtual school and if so which did you use and how did you like it?? Please help us as we make this choice Oh by the way he is a sophomore. Thank you

Cheryl

Ali - hope your Thanksgiving was good. I am probably going to withdraw from this team for lack of activity. emoticon You are coming to a close on your HS journey - which is awesome! I still have a ways to go! It seems though you are the only one really active. If I had time I would start a team but I am director of my HS support group so I really do not have a lot of time.
Blessings,
Julie

Morning,

Hope you all have had a great week. How is your school year going?

Julie, it is good to see you on here. Yes, I have noticed the same thing, none of the homeschool teams seem to be active. Actually none of the teams I am on seem to be very active. I guess it is a season. I really miss some of the people. I am at the end of my journey so the last few years have been very busy, How are you doing?

Blessings,

I am here, Ali, and wish it were active too. Every homeschool team on here seems to be inactive and just there. It would be so nice to see regular activity. I hope you are well!

Morning,

Where is everyone? I miss the homeschool teams. I am at the end of my journey and so many of these teams seemed to be almost dead.

I would be happy to check in here for accountability. How often would you like to do that? Welcome to the team.

Ugh CRAVINGS! I'm pretty sure that should be a cuss word. lol
I've had some cravings recently...usually at That Time of Month, where I just. do. not. want. to. stop. eating!
I think the TRACKER is the best accountability. You can eat some sweets, but keep it within your range.
Also, when I began the Fiber Challenge in July, I noticed I did not have ANY sweet cravings the entire time. Wow!!!! if you knew me...... lol

We need to discipline ourselves and just not go overboard.
At first, I bought a bag of mini candybars and allowed myself 1 per day. That worked great. Eventually, the cravings lessened, and like I said, on the fiber challenge they were non existent.
One tip I shared last Autumn was this.
Put your treats in front of you (in your spot, where ever you usually are in the house). Mark them with the words, "Award or Just bored?"
If you've done a really good job controlling yourself through out the day-award yourself without guilt!
If you feel like you're just in a snacky mood and bored...hold off for an hour, maybe more. Drink some water. Try to distract yourself. See how long you can last. Then if you still 'need' it, go for it. But at least you showed yourself that you can put it off longer than you think.

Be blessed on your journey!
And btw, THANKS for home schooling!

~Susan

Hi everyone. I wanted to introduce myself - My name is Angie and I have been on spark people since January. I lost 40 pounds between Jan to May but fell off the wagon for the whole summer with family and vacations - and gained 6 pounds back. We are back to our school routine and I am ready to get focused on weight loss and exercise again. Soooo ....I was wondering, what do you do to keep motivated? I totally gave in to all my cravings for the last 3 months and I am at a loss on how to keep from doing that again. Do you have accountability buddies? If so, how does that work? I would love to check in with someone daily or every few days but is that feasible?

Hello! Happy 4th of July!
Remember to teach your kids that Freedom is NEVER Free and to appreciate what we have in the country. ANDDDD to work toward KEEPING our freedoms.

Also remember that FITNESS is never FREE, either. Gotta work for it!
Have a great July! I'm enjoying my weeks off as much as possible by incorporating swimming several times a week.

Morning,

I hope you all are staying warn. We had snow Friday evening and Saturday morning. Nothing stuck enough for it to amount to anything. Luckily it warmed up enough we did not have a lot of black ice either. The only issue this caused for us was Friday night, my dd and I had a surprise Birthday Party emoticon for my ds. My ds 18th birthday is today! The weather cause a few people not to be able to attend.

The party was great. We had a good turn out, around 25 teens give or take a few. My ds was surprised! I felt like that was an accomplishment in itself. I am exhausted. I planned on resting yesterday, but my dh schedule got changed due to weather Friday and he did not get home until yesterday. We, then had family from out of town surprise us yesterday. It was great fun, but I need some rest.

I did get some things done last week, not as much as I would have liked. The 1st few days of the week I could just focus on what needed to be done, the meetings and stuff took over. The one thing about that was I have realized it is time to get rid of many things on my plate.

Have a blessed day,
Ali emoticon

Morning,

Happy Saturday everyone. It is so good to be home. I am still adjusting to be back and a new routine. We were gone for 2 weeks. We had a schedule during that time from the clinic so now we are getting back to our schedule.

Welcome Adrienne! My ds is 17 and he will soon be 18. He has suffered for 5 years. This clinic was such a blessing for him.

How is everyone doing at getting back into the swing of things? My ds is a senior this year so we are so very busy. I am trying to enjoy every moment.

Hope you all have a blessed Sunday!

Blessings,

Welcome back! I just joined in November, so I haven't met you yet. My name is Adrienne and I'm in Indiana.

I'm glad that your son is able to see doctors and get treatment. What a blessing! How old is he?

Happy 2016!

Well it's been a while for me. I love the encouragements and the post. How is everyone? It's been sometime since anyone posted. Everyone is probably back in the groove now.

We are at a clinic in Wichita. My ds if you all remember has Lymes and RMSF, we are seeing doctors here. This is such a blessing for us. We have been here since January 3rd.

I just have not posted in a while and wanted to stop in. I have missed everyone.

Blessings,

I ordered Singapore Math books which came over break, and I also purchased another book about communication projects. I spent some time last night, preparing for today's lessons and I felt so excited this morning. I feel like I really have a handle on this whole homeschooling thing now, since I just started in November. My son (11) also said that he's glad he's homeschooled because I'm more helpful with assignments than "normal teachers". It made me feel good!
