Hello. I hope all is well with everyone! I'm doing good. The other day I hopped on the scale and I've lost 12 pounds! I'm very happy about that! I try to eat better and I get plenty of exercise most days. WOO HOO!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Yes, laptop (Lenovo) is for my new job. Going OK now, except for an issue with my Lotus Notes ID that is not allowing me access to some key databases. Hopefully that is resolved later today or tomorrow.

Helping parent(s) clean out their house is not a whole lot of fun. DW and I went to AZ last fall to help my dad, and it wasn't too much fun. Some of that stuff has moved to our home, plus my brother sent more stuff after my dad passed, and other than getting it out of boxes and into plastic bins, not much has been done. You would have thought that I'd have made a dent during my "retirement", but it didn't. The next 30-45 days are going to be busy, so probably not much is going to happen on that project until October.

GETTO140, glad to hear the Surface is working for you. Doesn't matter what the reviews say, as long as you like it, that is a good thing.

Things quiet on the running circuit, but that will change next month with a 5K in Colorado on 9/12 (first race in the state I grew up in), and an 8K at the end of September in the home town of our most popular brewery, Dogfish Head. Very popular race -- sign up lasts like 10 minutes before the race is full -- so this will fun to be with such a large race crowd.

Well, back to work...hope everyone else is doing well!

LOL. That's great, PLMITCH! Is that your laptop for your new job? How's the new job going?
Congratulations about your daughter, too.

I bought a Microsoft Surface for my business to take with me when I meet new clients, keep my calendar, and have with me at all times. It's a cross between a tablet and a laptop...I love it! I saw some bad reviews for it, but most were great reviews. It's perfect and has a keyboard.

I've lost some weight which makes me very happy. I feel great.

I'm still helping my parents clean out their house. They are 2nd on the list to move into a retirement community. The house (cottage) will be much smaller than their house, so they need to get moving. My mom is doing excellent, but my dad seems to be procrastinating. He has so many papers; I'm sure many of them can be tossed. He loves to graph and chart everything! LOL (he's an engineer).

Hope you're all doing well!

Put this one under the category of "you can't make this stuff up". IBM laptop arrived via UPS shortly before 1:00PM yesterday. I'm excited! Get it out of the box, set it up in my living room to see what's all on there, and the hard drive goes south!! Tried all the tricks I could to get it to work, but no luck. Thankfully got in touch with Lenovo support, laptop is under warranty, so a new hard drive is on the way (expected to be here sometime today). My next issue is getting it imaged, as I don't have any other access to the IBM Network to get the image utility, short of driving to West Chester PA or Philly to obtain a copy at an IBM office. Hoping a copy can be sent electronically (the IBM vendor person I am working with is talking to her deskside contact in RTP for assistance).

Like I said, you can't make this stuff up!

Got my final offer from ICS yesterday morning, so papers have all been signed and looks like my start date will be 07/27/2015. And in an interesting parallel development, my youngest daughter accepted a new job with Tech Impact (not-for-profit company that provides hardware, software, and services to not-for-profit companies!) and starts on...yep, 07/27/2015!

The latest: I was beginning to wonder if anything job-wise was going to turn up soon, then it all changed at 3:00PM yesterday. Got a call from a VP at ICS, one of IBM's biggest contractors, and it seems the resume I sent them back in late April had made its way to a former 2nd line manager, and while my timing was off then, it wasn't yesterday. She had a contract slot to fill, had wanted me for it when the slot opened, and so I got the call. And after a few more calls, it was all set and I am tentatively going back to IBM as a contractor on 7/27! Maybe sooner if the background checks and drug screening gets done sooner. Submitted the background check yesterday, got the drug screening paperwork today, and will head to Labcorp tomorrow.

Just can't make this stuff up...

The job search goes on. Lots of jobs out there, just not getting past the initial application stage. Most of May and the first part of June was wiped out due to dealing with my dad -- not that it was a bad thing, but it was a priority. This week it was fun with Comcast. I expect this will be a slower week with the 4th of July holiday coming up.Any suggestions or leads most appreciated!

What I do have some control over is running! Last Thursday was such a great day to run (upper 60's) after a stretch of hot running days! I have a 5K race this coming Saturday (7/4) and a 10K race on 7/18.

Hope everyone is doing OK!

We are headed to Maine today to open our cabin for the Summer Season then home again on Monday and to PA next weekend for our nieces wedding. Life has been very busy lately and looks like ti will stay that well into Fall. Our new grandbaby is due the end of June and I am very excited to meet her. I'm flying to Seattle after she is born and staying a couple of weeks then going back in November with my Mom to meet her great granddaughter.
Hope the job search is going well.

Hello! I'm behind here. Sorry you didn't get that job, PLMITCH, but something will turn up. I hope you had a great retirement dinner. I got the knife set for my retirement gift...my old one was OLD and not that good any more.

May has been great for pet sitters! People are getting away and hiring me! Today I started 5 days with two new clients. Both dogs are so sweet! My husband and I are taking some time off next weekend to celebrate our 23rd anniversary on May 29. We decided to take some day trips....one to Syracuse to the Destiny U.S.A. mall and then eat at a friend of ours restaurant (he is from our area and moved there a few years ago). Another day we are going to go to Cooperstown...not to the Baseball Hall of Fame...but just to walk around the great town. Neither of us are baseball fans.

It's been a wonderful spring so far!

Enjoy your retirement dinner . . . .it is a milestone in your life no matter how you got there.

Good luck in the job search.

We are enjoying some fabulous almost Summer like weather and I have been keeping very busy in the gardens and doing other yard work.

Today is going to be the wrap up day for my IBM retirement activities:

- Deposit severance check
- Receive retirement gift (decided on a telescope)
- Retirement dinner tonight (we are dining at our favorite restaurant in Rehoboth Beach -- Victoria's)

Nothing new on the job search front. Lots of applications, some quality networking, etc.

And yes, I have been busy!

More to follow in the coming days...

Well here I am on day 1 of my "retirement". This feels weird! Hopefully it won't last long!

I am going to take a day off from the job search and do some serious office cleaning! I'll get back to it on Monday.

Sorry for not posting sooner. Very hectic since Sunday! Thankfully we are out in OK seeing our best friends and getting ready to do some sightseeing!

The interview went well, but I did get a call on Tuesday from the Deloitte recruiter indicating that they had gone with another candidate that the interview team felt had a better skill set for what they were looking for, but it was good to go through the interview process, and will be much better set for the next one.

The good news is that I have my next phone interview next Tuesday with a recruiter from Capgemini! I'll keep you all posted on how this new opportunity progresses. I also have a lead on another job that I am going to apply for today. Oh, and I got an e-mail Monday from an IBM manager who wants to talk to me about a PM position I applied for internally. I responded to make sure he knew I am out the door on 4/30, so hopefully that will cause him to move a bit faster (or maybe he'll run away!).

Thanks for all the good vibes!

I hope your interview went well today!

I've been very busy and I love it! The weather has been beautiful.

I've been helping my parents start to clean out their house over the last few months. Saturday, we're having a garage sale to try to get rid of some of the items. Then some of it will go to our church for a rummage sale we're having next week. In the next month or so, they are also going to have an estate sale to really down size so they can move into a nice retirement development located here. It's been a lot of work and fun to go through things. It's really hard for them (and sometimes me) to let things go. There just isn't room in the place they want to move to and I don't have room for it, either. I'd love some of the things, but just can't take them.

Have a nice night everyone!

To say I am nervous for my interview on Monday is an understatement! I'm sure this will build as the day gets closer!

I was hoping the Right Management "IView" app would help, but I've attempted to record my responses a number of times and I come across sounding like a chipmunk, and an edgy one at that! It's not playing back at the right speed, so I may try one more time using my IBM laptop and see if I have any better luck. If not, I'll just have to prepare the old fashion way!!

My interview starts at 9:30AM, and there are four people lined up for me to meet with (four different interviews, not a panel). I am driving over the night before, which is a good thing for my wife, as I am pretty certain I will not sleep well Sunday night.

Time to go to the Y and work off some of this nervous energy!!

Sorry Donna, forgot to post an update, which is OK since a few things happened. Anyway, initial phone interview went well, had a 2nd phone interview on Thursday with an attorney for the group I'd be working in. That went well. He is a former IBMer (his last position was in Microelectronics).

I had not heard anything by yesterday (Friday) afternoon, so I sent a note to the recruiter, and she very quickly responded back to tell me I had advanced to the in person interview stage!! The date is April 20 in McLean, VA, about a 2.5 hour drive for me. Tentative time is 1:30PM, so it'll be an easy daytime drive, assuming of course no traffic issues in the DC area, which is a BAD assumption! I'll be leaving way ahead of time!

Right Management has some really great interviewing resources. I had already signed up for an interviewing webinar (and a negotiating one as well) for Wednesday. They also have what they call "IView", which is where you use a webcam and record a mock interview session. Will definitely take advantage of that! It is going to be a whirlwind week coming up. Nervous, excited, etc.!

I'll make sure to follow-up here after the 4/20 interview, although I may post some of my prep activities as well.

Good karma, great vibes, fingers crossed, and even a prayer or two all welcome and appreciated!

I have my first interview -- a phone interview -- this afternoon. It is with Deloitte, and for a position I am VERY interested in! It is a very good match vs my skillset, so I am pretty excited! It is with a Deloitte recruiter, so my goal is to impress her enough so that I get a face to face interview. The job location is in Philadelphia, but my guess is that I'll be on the road the majority of the time, but that is a question I will bring up.

I'll post a follow-up tomorrow with how I think it went.

Congratulations on getting your IBM PM Certification! That's not easy! Maybe there is some hot project going on some place that will scoop you up before the 30th. If not..like you said...go with your head held high. If nothing else, IBM has taught me a lot about business, doing things the right way, having integrity and treating the customer with the utmost respect (among many other things). I absolutely don't miss that place at all, though! lol Good luck with all your races.

Donna, my husband is in Savannah and coming home today. He went with his bagpipe band to march in the St. Patrick's Day parade. He had a blast! I wasn't able to go this time, but maybe in a few years when they go back I'll be able to go.

The weather here has been up and down. One day it's in the 50's, the next in the 20's and snowing again. But!! I'll take it compared to the below 0 weather we had most of February!

We are making a stop in Deleware on the way home next week . . . .a geocaching thing we have been working on for the past few years. Tonight and tomorrow we are in Tybee Island Georgia and then we are headed to Pawley's Island South Carolina as we start to work our way North . . . .this vacation has been just what the doctor ordered. Feeling much better than when we left home and I can deal with the rest of winter when we get back.

Good Luck on the job hunt . . . I'm sure you will find the perfect match for you.

The temps here in Delaware have been better this week, although the weather folks are indicating we may get another round of below average temps the 2nd half of the month.

At "halftime" of my three month RA purgatory (I'm not sure what else to call it). Making some headway on resume, etc. I'm going to concentrate on contracts management type of positions, although I may have to consider PM positions as well. Ironically, I submitted my PM recert package at the end of last month and just got word today that it has gotten all the necessary approvals, so I am certified for life IBM PM! Sadly, that life may well likely end on 04/30! Oh well, if I go, I will go with my head held high!

A little over a week before I run in my first half marathon. I'm pretty much set. Stuck nicely to my training plan, etc. On Monday when I am up in Wilmington, I am going to drive the course so that I know ahead of time where the hills are so that I can plan accordingly. I've heard they are around miles 6 through 9, but it will be good to see the landmarks ahead of time.

I have races coming up in April (5K) and May (10K). There will be my club 10K in July that I'll run for sure, but nothing else planned just yet. If the employment gods bless me with a new job soon enough, I'd like to sign up for a half marathon in Tucson in December, which I'll tie to seeing my dad and celebrating his 84th birthday.

OK, that's all for now. Hope all of you are doing well....

We took the dog to the Vet and he ran her blood work and said she was ok. He thought she had some sort of flu type bug or trauma from the groomers because it all started after we took her to the groomers to get ready for vacation. Anyway he gave her a dog version of Advil and she is essentially back to normal and we are in Georgia. Yesterday it was 73 and sunny . . . .just what I needed. We took our dog and our daughters dog to the park and hiked around the trails so I got my 10,000 steps in for the 1st time in weeks. Today is suppose to be cloudy and maybe a shower but the temps are still warm . Got to go get breakfast before they close and get this day going.

I'm sorry that your dog isn't feeling so well. What did the vet say?

It's supposed to warm up a bit this week...I'm looking forward to the break and hope it continues. Maybe Vermont will warm up, too?

Last week we had a stray female cat spayed at a local spay/neuter clinic. She has been in the neighborhood for years....making babies....and more babies. Over the years, we and some of our neighbors have captured many of the kittens and found good homes for them (including keeping some ourselves...lol). We could never catch mom...she would never go in traps and no one wanted to just pick her up......until last weekend! Somehow she got in one of our neighbor's basements and they were able to put her in a crate. Since the husband is very allergic to cats, we have been housing her in our house. If all does well, we will be able to put her back out next Saturday. The vet says she is very healthy. I feel bad putting her back out there, but she's been living "wild" for at least 8 or 9 years if not longer.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

We were suppose to be leaving today for a 3 week vacation in Georgia and maybe Florida but our 16 year old dog hasn't been feeling well and we are worried about getting out on the road with her and having something happen to her . . . so today we have an appointment at the vet and we'll see. We may have to cancel the vacation all together and that would be a bummer because I too am sick of this winter. It has been much colder than recent years and the wind chill on top of that . . . well let's just say brrrrrr.

That sounds like a very interesting path, PLMITCH. Resume writing has changed quite a bit from what I remembered it to be. Interviewing is another thing I would probably need help with. I did go a few interviews for a part time jobs last year (I didn't get the jobs). Looking back, I didn't answer some questions well at all. I was caught a bit off guard by some questions really. But...it's really not what I wanted to do. I was thinking it would be nice to have a regular pay check coming in for the slow times....but then again...I'm not sure I could manage an 8-hour day if scheduled and then go take care of clients' pets. Also I might be available if a regular client needed me at the last minute. I chose wisely!

I've had enough of this winter! I like snow, but now I'm ready for spring to show up! It's been too cold! This weekend is our area's big St. Patrick's Day Parade and celebrations. I won't see my husband too much; he'll be marching in the parade and doing other events with the bagpipe band. I am pet sitting for people who are going to the parade so I won't be able to go (I wouldn't anyway...it's going to be COLD!). I may meet up with them later on Saturday night after I'm done with my jobs....will have to see.

emoticon Have a great weekend!

I am glad it is all starting to come together for both of you . . . .there really is life after IBM.
The cold weather has really put a damper on our winter in VT this year and we have pretty much decided to head out to Arizona next winter so we can have some fun. I like winter but this year the wind and below zero temps have kept us indoors more than we like.
We are headed to Georgia and the coast in 2 weeks but they aren't all that warm right now either . . . . has to be better than here though.
Hope everyone has a nice weekend. I'll be busy knitting up a storm for the new grandbaby.

The Right Management office for this area is in Wilmington, DE -- about an hour away, so I've gone in for the "Getting Started" and one "Staying on Track" session. Found both very helpful and energizing. Did the resume webinar earlier this week, and as you might imagine, I need to do some revamping.

My biggest struggle is deciding what I want to do (or as Iike to say -- what do I want to do when I grow up?). Of course I can do IT PM work, but that does not excite me at all. Contracts work -- maybe. But in the search to find something I can truly be passionate about, I've stumbled upon the idea of combining program management with something tied to my healthy living, because THAT is something I am passionate about!

I did find a job posting that I may use as a template for my research. Fiserv has an opening in the Atlanta area for a "Wellness Program Manager", and that may get me moving in the right direction. Can't move to the Atlanta area (we need to stay in DE for the foreseeable future due to my inlaws being in their 80's and living nearby - my wife is the only surviving child, so we have to be here), but may do some networking on the job to determine if I am on the right track. I'm going to run this by my career coach as well.

CONGRATS on the CPPS designation! That is so key to be certified in "stuff' these days!

Well, I am sure I'll have more to write about in the coming weeks as I try to narrow my search.

Donna, Judy was my career coach, too. I enjoyed talking to her, too. Very nice.

Yesterday I found out that I passed my Pet Sitters certification through Pet Sitters International. I got a 93 on the extremely long test....I don't remember doing that good on a test ever! lol. So I'm a CPPS! Certified Professional Pet Sitter! emoticon emoticon

Now...if I can just get serious about my fitness and health!! I still can't find my spark and it's gotten worse since I retired. I thought for sure it would be easier with all this time I have...but it hasn't!! UGH!! I did lose 12 pounds when I was really busy with pet sitting...February has been extremely slow. Things are picking up in March a bit. A few months are completely booked. I guess I should be taking advantage of these quiet days and DO SOMETHING!!

My career coach was from Right Management also a woman named Judy from North Carolina . . . I really liked talking to her. I did a bunch of their webinars. Even though I was pretty sure I wanted to retire I wanted to explore the options out there. I also took advantage of the retraining money they gave me to take some university courses in gardening and landscaping . . .a nice hobby for me in retirement as it turns out.
I chose retirement because my DH is 12 years older than I am and if I kept working until I was 62 or 65 he would be 74 or 77 and we might not be able to do all of the things we wanted to do. I am happy with my choice and we live modestly so I don't have to work but if we needed I could go back to doing something to supplement our income.
I am sure you will find what is right for you either in Big Blue or outside. Thinking of you as you go though this transitioning time.

Is the career coach from Right Management? I took full advantage of that which is what lead me to start my pet sitting business. They were GREAT (in my opinion). There are great webinars available. They helped me with my resume (yes..I still need one), my bio, LinkedIn and generally helped me to "find" myself. By doing the initial exercises, it was very clear to me where my interests were (I always knew it would be animals...just didn't know exactly what. There's no money in rescuing animals for most people..lol). I also found the unemployment office to be another exrtremely great resource. They also have many classes available to help people find jobs or what ever their next career my be. Once I declared I was starting a business, though, I was no longer eligible for unemployment. Not sure how it is in your State. And...there IS life outside of IBM. I'm sure you'll find what is right for you!

I really liked my career coach even though I wasn't really interested in a new career. I certainly was out of touch on the resume front. I had to submit resumes and look for jobs for 6 months before I could retire as I only had 29.5 years when I was RA'd but I had a bridge to retirement.

Good luck in your interview. Keep us up to date on what's happening for you.

GETTO140 and DONNA_VT, I've posted for about 20 internal positions, 6 already declined. I do have an internal interview tomorrow, plus doing some networking internally. I'll be going to the career counseling firm that IBM has retained for us RA'ers next week. Actually pretty excited as I'll be assigned a career coach and they'll help me get my resume up to date as well as make sure the "right" words are in my LinkedIn account.

I've pretty much gotten over the initial shock of the RA, and feeling pretty good about what the future holds for me!

Well, the RA "bug" finally found me! Lots of details to still be sorted out. If there is any good news, it's that my last day is 04/30/2015 due to the account I work on. That is of course assuming I don't find another position internally. More to follow....

Happy New Year to each of you. We are currently in Pittsburgh visiting DH side of the family.
We will be heading back to Vermont this weekend or Monday and then my work begins. My 1st grandbaby is due June 25th so I really have motivation to get fit and healthy. I plan to be half way to my goal weight before the baby is due. I posted some goals for the year.

That is great that your pet-sitting business is taking off. I'm not surprised -- we've tried to reach out to a local pet-sitter and she has yet to return our calls, which either means she is REAL busy or just does not run her business well! In any case, with a 12.5 year old greyhound puppy in our house, we'd much prefer having a trusted person to take care of our puppies vs taking them to the kennel. We have a vacation lined up for next March, so we need to get searching again, though we may be able to get my youngest daughter to house / pet sit for our March vacation.

I've been on the American Express account now for almost two months. Business has been very quiet until the last few weeks, so I've had a chance to make a serious dent in my education plans, first time that has happened in a LONG time. Very interesting account...

Had a FANTASTIC 10K race last Saturday in Newark, DE -- ran a PR of 58:12! It had been awhile since I set any new PR's, so makes me feel good that the training for this race paid off! One more race this year -- a 5K at Rehoboth Beach, DE on 12/31. Hoping to close out the year with a 5K PR! Training begins today!

emoticon

Fairly quiet Thanksgiving dinner coming up -- just my FIL/MIL and youngest daughter. My oldest daughter and new DIL are both working on Thursday (both are nurses!). Some great NFL games on Thursday!

Happy Thanksgiving fellow IBMers!

Hello, everyone. I hope you're all doing well. I'm doing very well and LOVE my new pet sitting business. This week is the best one yet....I have 3 clients in one week and 2 of them are brand new to me. I've been getting about 3 new clients per month since August (but my goal is to add 4 new clients per month). I just love it.

What is everyone doing for Thanksgiving? Besides taking care of some dogs, we are going to my mother-in-law's for dinner where some of my husband's family and my parents will be. It's usually a lot of fun.

I've also been helping my parents clean out their house a bit...putting things on craigslist for them to try to sell, too. It's been a lot of work and we haven't really even gotten to the big things yet.

Well...I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and can take some time off from work to relax and enjoy your family and friends. emoticon

I'm still here. Summer is our crazy time . . . we go back and forth to Maine. This year we ended up spending about 8 weeks there from Jun until last week. It was nice but crazy. As far as weight loss I have gained over the Summer about 5 lbs. not terrible but not in the right direction either. DH has gone to P'Burgh for 2 weeks to help his sister do some things and a little bonding time with his family so I am trying to focus on getting back on track. I have no excuses right now.
Still loving retirement. . . . time has flown by . . . official retirement is 5 years next week. We spend a lot of time geocaching and seeing the USA it has been amazing and there are still so many more places we want to go see. I check one off and we add more so the list has gotten any shorter but if something were to happen to either of us tomorrow we can say that we have done what w wanted to do and not put it off. My parents retired and did nothing because my mom always said they didn't have the money which wasn't true but she had the depression era mentality. . . .then my dad got to crippled from arthritis that they couldn't go anywhere and she was angry that they never got to do anything before he died. I said that wasn't going to be us and it isn't. Sorry to go on and on.
I am glad to see the few of us still here and enjoying our lives. Keep on!

Hello!

Way to go on keeping at your goal weight! That's fantastic!!

Glad your dad is adjusting. It must be difficult to move around at that age...it would even be difficult for me I think! My parents are looking into a retirement place here in our area. I kind of hope they like it and move. Their house is too much for them to handle....the yard is huge, there are too many stairs, and they just don't need all that room any more.

My pet sitting business is doing pretty good! I've been busy enough to get a routine going, but not so busy that I can't breath. I'm really enjoying it and have met some very nice people and pets. The name of my business is Jan's K9 and Kat Sitting, LLC. It became official on Aug. 8, and I have 10 clients already. I'm in the process now of becoming a certified pet sitter through Pet Sitters International (want to take full advantage of the education money IBM gave me).

Have I told you we adopted a chinese crested in May? She is a rescue from a deployment I went on in West Virginia...a hoarding/breeding situation. I've tried uploading pictures of her, but I guess they are too large for SP to handle. We still have our greyhound, Darla. They get along fantastic!!

Good luck on your races! I've lost a little weight since leaving IBM. I think mostly because I don't eat as much; I'm busy! I don't sit all day, either. I generally feel great!

Don't work too hard! Is anyone else here?

Haven't posted here in over a month -- my apologies! I've completed my work in STG and am now full time here in SO on the American Express account. Working on getting my Level 1 QA accreditation (I had it when I was previously in SO), and have my first proposal assigned to me. Should be a fun month!

We did get to see my dad last month. He is doing well and adjusting to life at the retirement community he is living at. We spent some quality time at his house going through papers, pictures, etc, and brought back a small suitcase full plus shipped a box of pictures still in their frames. My dad does not want to spend money to replace the carpets and have the walls repainted though -- and they both badly need to be done! Between the realtor and myself, we'll keep pushing.

Last Monday was the 3 year anniversary of my LapBand surgery. I'm still at my goal weight which speaks volumes to the success I have had.

And I am still on track to running a distance race each month. I have a 5K coming up on 1025, then need to sign up for a November and December race. Pretty certain I'll do a December race on 12/31 like I did last year, and there was a very challenging 5K I ran in the weekend before Thanksgiving which I may sign up for unless I find a 10K to do. BTW, these words would have never been typed 3 years ago...

emoticon

I hope all the active and retired IBMers are doing well. Drop by and let us know how you are doing...

This is my last full week in STG...actually only 4 more days then on Friday 8/15 I start my transition back to SO and the AMEX account. Very excited and already seeing a big difference (positive) on information from my new manager. Understand there is a whole "onboarding" process, so expect a slow ramp up over the next 30 days starting on 8/15.

My wife and I had plans to be heading to Arizona this morning to see my dad, but her aunt passed away last Thursday (cancer), and the viewing is on Sunday and funeral on Monday, so our Arizona plans were pushed to September.

Finishing up lunch then out to mow. Have a great Saturday fellow IBMers!

Mitch, I wish I lived closer to you, too. I'd love to sit for your hounds. I have 5 clients already and technically I'm not really official yet. I still have work to do...finish my business plan (which is tough for me)..I want to be an LLC. August is almost filled with jobs already! Now I know what they mean when they say if you love what you do it isn't work.

Donna, sounds good for your daughter. I can see that it is much in demand. Apparently 3 pet sitters in my area have stopped doing it...2 "retired" from it and 1 moved to Florida. That is good for me! Some friends of mine recently moved to Redmond area. Her husband got a great job at Microsoft after leaving Lockhead Martin. That is a very generous company.

It's been so hot and humid here. I don't care for that type of weather at all!

My garden is fantastic this year. I tried to upload a few pictures here, but I guess they are too large for SP to handle. We built raised beds this spring and it's the best garden I've ever had!

Have I mentioned that I don't miss work at all? emoticon

Oh how exciting for both of you!
Mitch I am glad you have found something more satisfying at IBM it is hard to work when you aren't happy with what you are doing. I loved what I was doing but as wanted to spend more time with my DH who was already retired. IBM made the decision for me 5 years ago and I haven't been unhappy about it. We are both really enjoying the retirement life and we are both healthy enough to do what we want to do so that is good.
My daughter has a degree in Equine Management but for the last few years has been a pet sitter. She recently got a certification in dog training so she does both and has her own business which is good because she has moved 4 times in the last 4 years. She just has to re-establish a customer base each time and she has plenty of references from the past places she has lived. Her DH is in the Coast Guard. Right now they are in the Seattle area and she is also teaching horseback riding for the Rec Dept in the city of Redmond to the children of Microsoft employees. e used to have a pet sitter but she died and now we just take our dog with us everywhere. She is 15+ and I wouldn't dare leave her with anyone.
Got to go get started on my inside chores since it is raining today.

Too bad you do not live closer to Delaware -- we'd love to find a pet sitter vs taking our greys to the kennel. Don't get me wrong - the kennel treats them well, but we know they'd be so much happier here at home when we go out of town.

There is one pet sitter in our area who we've reached out to a few times via their web site and they have never called back. Frustrating!

Anyway, best of luck to you in your new venture. I'm sure you will do well!!

emoticon Congratulations!! It's always better to do what you enjoy!

After doing some soul searching and trying to decide what I really want to do next, I've decided to become a pet sitter for dogs and cats only. I do it for free for some people...why not get paid for it! I'm working on my business plan now and have started working with my local SCORE. I actually have 2 clients already in July. I'm so excited about this!! I have many more animal-related certifications than I do anything else. I definitely don't want to do what I did at IBM again, IBM has provided me with some really good business skills that I can use for just about anything. emoticon

Some exciting IBM news for me - I've accepted a new position over in GTS as a Contract Management Advisor! My official transfer date is 08/15/2014, so it'll give me a chance to make sure all the loose ends here in STG are tied up. This has not been a bad job, but more administrative work than I truly cared for. My new job will be 100% contracts + direct customer interaction.

Nothing too exciting for me at the moment. Did run in my first 10K last Saturday, but other that it is pretty much work, exercise, yard work, eat, and sleep. The past two days I've hosted calls with India and the ASEAN countries so started my work day at 03:30! Thankfully I am done with those and will be able to get a more normal night's sleep tonight!

We are going to New Orleans at the end of the month. It is a seminar my wife is attending on behalf of her company, so I'm coming along for the ride! Plan to work my normal schedule from the hotel but we'll take advantage of being there and check out the night life! First time going to New Orleans for either of us!

Well, back to work...take care all!

It is going to be a crazy weekend at our house my niece and her DH are coming for Maryland because she is running the Vermont City Marathon in Burlington, my sister and BIL are coming to watch her and my daughter is coming today from Georgia to attend the funeral of one of her best friends. . . a 28 yr old mother of two children who died Tuesday night of skin cancer which went to her brain. So we have joy and sorrow in the same house at the same time should be interesting.
Next week we are headed to Maine to open the cabin for Summer . . . .let the Summer begin! It sure has been a long winter.

Hello everyone! I hope you're all doing great! I'm really enjoying not working, but am looking for a job. I've had one interview so far...we'll see what happens.

A few weeks ago I got a bad report from the Doctor...my cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose were all up and in sketchy ranges. I've been given 2 months to reduce these numbers...I'm working on it. I've stepped up my daily walks and am eating better. Had to cut down on the carbs..I was out of control really! I think all the stress of everything in the last year did a number on me and working from home (although great) kept me too close to food all the time.

Since I've been gone from IBM I've been able to go on one animal rescue deployment, built 4 raised garden beds (I've been wanting to do that for several years and just didn't have time), took my parents on a little trip for a couple of days, and have done quite a bit to clean out the house. My mom hurt her back shortly after I "retired" so I was helping them out...she still isn't back to normal but doing better.

I hope you all have a good day! Keep the stock prices up! emoticon

We just got back Friday from being on a road trip for 30 days to the west coast . . .retirement isn't bad at all. I miss some of the people but not the job stress that was all around the last few years. It is hard to believe that I have been out of there for 5 years this year. Time flies by.
Vacation was very good but I gained 3 lbs despite the walking and trying to be conscious of what I was eating. Today, I am back on track .. . . water, exercise, healthy eating and of course tracking . . . I'll get those pounds gone in short order.
Glad to see there are still a few of us around.
Have a great rest of the weekend.

Hello. I must say, it feels good not to have to work at the moment. I had my "retirement" dinner last night with my manager, husband, parents and 5 other close work friends. It was wonderful! We had a lot of laughs and talked about the good old days from when I first started working there. We used to have so much fun at work, but still worked hard. Monday morning I will return all my equipment and badge and that will be it! Still kind of hard to believe really. It's been my way of life for 32 years!

Yesterday I saw there was a full-time receptionist position available at my vet's office..what the heck..I sent my resume. I'll still need to work and what a better type of place than to be surrounded by animals who are being helped. If I don't get the job it's really OK. I don't mind having some time off for a while.

In a few weeks, I'll be going out on an animal response with one of the teams I'm on. I can't say where it is or what I'll be doing (it's a criminal case) but I'm looking forward to helping.

Have a happy weekend!

Thank you! Yes, I plan to stay on the team. I will keep you posted on the deployments that I can discuss publicly.

Ya..I have a Toshiba for work. Took some getting used to at first because the keyboard is a little odd....so odd that I purchased my own and used that most of the time. All in all, though, I like it. It's very said that "we" don't make products much any more.....scarey too if you ask me..but that's all I'll say! Have a great day!! At least it's not bitter cold! We were able to go for a nice walk with the doggies yesterday. So good to get them out like that!

Accepted! I hope you do stay on this team since it is geared to past and present IBM'ers. Would love to hear about your animal deployments (especially if greyhound are involved!).

I just got my new laptop yesterday -- it is a Toshiba. It dawned on me as I was opening the box that this is the first time in AGES -- like over 30 years -- that my primary workstation is not an IBM or Lenovo product! Pretty amazing run...

Thank you! I'm kind of looking forward to having some time off..and also possibly going on some animal-related deployments. I've had to turn 4 down because of work!! :). Really..I'm fine with this for me, but others are not. I'm much more fortunate than some of my co-workers are who were RA'd. I do feel bad for the ones left behind...no one knows one of my jobs and it's not going away...whoever gets it won't have much time with me. No one has been named yet as my replacement(s). Thanks for taking over the team! I'm switching to you now.

Well..I got RA'd today. My last day is March 31. I'm mentally ready to go and am really not sad. I'm more worried about the financial stuff, but not so much that I'm losing sleep over it. I'm not sure how many were let go from our site, but I heard it was hit hard. I enjoyed most of my time with IBM, but now it's time to move on and do something else. Someone will need to take over the team...PLMITCH, would you be interested? If so I'll transfer it over to you.

Of course nothing is ever confirmed when it comes to RA's, but there was a lot of reports on a Raleigh NC TV web site that stated that RA's took place in India on 2/19 and supposedly going to happen in the US on 2/26. We shall see...

It was nice here this weekend as well...in the 60's yesterday, so even though Sunday has become my "rest" day, I did get outside and got a nice 50 minute power walk in. 5K race coming up on 3/15 (my birthday! what a way to celebrate!).

Hello, team! PLMITCH, I hope the possible layoffs don't effect you..haven't heard anything in my area except what the local paper reports.

Been back to doing Taebo 3 times a week and strength exercises 2 times a week for the last 4 weeks. On the weekends, I walk dogs at a local shelter...that's a workout!! Most don't walk nice on leashes and are strong! I also do other things that give me a decent work out. Sunday is still my day off but I do walk. The weather was beautiful over the weekend so we got several good walks in. Back to cold weather this week, though.

Have a good day, all!

I opted to get the FitBit, since I had been using my iPhone for tracking. FitBit arrived last Friday, and I am THRILLED with how it is working already. Today when I run at the Y, I'll use just my FitBit and not use my iPhone for tracking for the first time.

The layoffs make me nervous, especially since I am in STG and we had a LOUSY 2013! On top of that, the x86 hardware line is being sold to Lenovo, so that adds to the layer of uncertainty. I am NOT ready to retire, and of course don't want to be "tapped" to go either. Only a part of my work involved x86 services so I'd be surprised if I was a part of the x86 sale.

Just shaping up to be an "interesting" 2014!

Just got done setting up my wellness page. I decided to get the rebate for tracking fitness this time since I just got the SPARK activity tracker. I don't really need two gadgets even though it was tempting.

It's so cold here. I'd much rather have SNOW!

I see more layoffs to come (I saw it in USA Today and our local paper today). I hope all those who still want to work are untouched and those who are ready to go get picked. In my location, the majority are eligible for retirement. I think many are just waiting to get picked sad to say. Years ago no one ever wanted to leave.

Took the first two days of the new year off (plus New Year's Day) so a nice 5 day weekend after working over the holidays. It was strangely quiet though, which worries me...

We got 7.5 inches of snow here on the Delmarva -- a little higher than had been predicted. Sun is out but it is VERY windy, 16F but a wind chill of -3F! May venture to the Y later on, assuming the roads are clear (there are a few spots near open fields where the snow will drift over the road on windy days).

TGIF fellow IBM'ers!

Happy New Year everyone! Make it count! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Lately I've been using Walk Away the Pounds by Leslie Sansome. I tripped over the vacuum cleaner on Christmas day and fell directly on my ribs. Nothing broken I'm pretty sure, but I have been hurting because of it. I lost my breath for a few moments. I'm doing much better, but the walking exercises are about all I can do right now. Seems like I fall a lot any more!! My husband said I should not do any cleaning on Christmas day ever again! I can live with that!!!! emoticon

Enjoy your time off, PLMITCH! Work has been crazy busy!!! I'm taking some time off Friday and the week after Christmas and am really looking forward to it!! Congratulations on your 10-year anniversary and enjoy Jamaica.

We had some snow here over the weekend. I love it! Maybe 10 inches. We weren't able to make it to a Christmas party, though. It was the worse during the time we would have gone.

I may have an opportunity to go to NYC on Dec 27 to do something for American Humane Association. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but looks like an opportunity to branch out a bit so I signed up!

Have a great day, everyone!

My last full work week is this this week for 2013! WooHoo! After this week, no worse than a 4 day work week, and a few 3's, and one where DW and I will be in Jamaica celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and renewing our vows! In fact, that ceremony is 4 weeks from today!

Work has been crazy, so the shorter work weeks will be welcome.

That's GREAT! You must be soooo proud of yourself!! I've been pretty bad at this as far as huddling, blogging (not much of a blogger anyway) and just sparking in general. But I just bought the SPARK gadget and am hoping to recharge myself!!

On a good note, I had a physical by my cardiologist on Wednesday and got a spectacular report! I don't have to see him again until next September! I'm very happy about that! emoticon

I'm still here. I'm not as active on here like I used to be and it shows, too! Honestly, I am tired of tracking, but that's what really works. Eying my portions doesn't work for me. In addition since I've started working full time from home it's too easy to access food. With work so busy, I would think I could avoid it, but it seems to make it worse. Well...enough of my whining!! Glad to see we are still a team!

Hi Joell, and any other IBMers still around. I'm trying to re-start and get motivated (and get my bonus!). I just took my measurements and it's a bummer to see all are higher than when I recorded them 3 years ago.
But, since hubby and I have slacked off our evening walks, and I've stopped focusing on portion control, that's what happens!

CRAZY busy week last week, and another busy week coming up! FIL is having surgery this Thursday so my DW will be with him most of the day. I'm taking Friday off and plan to see him then. He has what appears to be a benign growth in his lower intestines so they have to remove it plus quite a bit of the intestines. He turns 83 in September, so any major surgery is risky but this is very necessary.

Today was VERY busy! No rest for the weary!

Hi, thanks for asking - I've been riding quite a bit, and actually just starting to feel some "aches" again in that area which I now recognize as a precursor to the real sciatica nerve pain. Taking a bit of ibuprofen and as I'm traveling for a few days, no riding, so maybe that will help. Not thrilled about this turn of events.

One of the Dads at our barn had prostate cancer last year. Apparently this type of cancer is very slow-growing, that's why it's not so urgent to treat it. In addition, he needed to lose some weight prior to the surgery, so that gave him some time to do that. Not sure if your Dad has to do anything like that, or if it's just normal scheduling.

Hope all is well with folks!

Hello, everyone. Work is very busy so not much time to post here lately. Things are going pretty good. My dad is doing OK, but doesn't see his first Dr. until May! Ugh! I guess that means it's not that serious???? I don't know. I've asked why so late and he said that is why. I always thought it is best to get going. I confirmed this with my mother and she also said that is why.

I've been feeling good lately..yea! I just couldn't get on the spark bandwagon, though, after that last afib attack. So I am trying to let sparkpeople plan my meals for me for this week to see how it goes. It's actually been fun and has energized me...and I'm doing good with it. I don't have to think about what each meal will be and I was able to print the grocery list right from here, too. Easy! I may try it next week, too.

Jennie, how are you feeling? Still no pain? I hope that is the case.

Have a nice day!

I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad! I believe that prostate cancer is highly curable, but it's too bad he has to go through that, esp. at that age. My prayers for him.

Wow, you must be a saint to go through your husband learning bagpipe, lol! It does sound like the festivities will be fun. Has he gotten his kilt yet?!

Good news, went to PT yesterday, and I was really in virtually no pain for the past 3-4 days (still taking ibuprofen). He did a few tests (leg lifting, etc.) and still no pain. He says my abs are stronger than most people my age, which explains why I was able to rebound from this "so quickly." I had seen him in March after a fall from my horse in which I compressed a couple of vertebrae, and had been doing some ab-strengthening exercises, but had started slacking off by end of summer. I had started riding again mid-June, but it took quite a while to get comfortable again. He gave me just a couple of exercises, knee to chest stretch, and also to start doing the plank again. And he told me to go ahead and ride! So, I did last night, and no pain still this morning, so I'm quite relieved. I did take ibuprofen last night, but for the most part, he said I should stop that (I had finished the two weeks the doctor recommended to relieve the inflammation). I also did have quite some pain in the middle of the night in the outer part of both legs (calf area), which I believe stemmed from riding in some fairly stiff dressage boots but riding "hunt style," which has a shorter stirrup length. So, I think pressing my heel down against that boot aggravated that area of my leg. Twice during the night I had to massage deeply the side of each leg to get the pain to go away.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! I'm looking forward to more riding.

Good morning. How is everyone doing today? I'm good so far, but got some news from my parents last night that my father has prostate cancer...he's 80. He just found out and needs to review all of this options. The good news is that he's on top of it right away. Both of my parents are very good about that when it comes to health issues. He's an engineer and everything is logged and charted..LOL. I didn't get those genes as much...a little..but not like him.

This is going to be an exciting weekend for us. My husband has been learning to play the bagpipes for the last 3 years and last week he tried out for and made it into one of our local pipe bands. On Friday and Saturday, he will be marching with them for the first time on all of our local St. Patrick's Day events. There is a big "pre-parade" party tomorrow night that they play at (sadly I won't be going to that one) and there is a huge parade on Saturday. It's an annual thing that is done here in our community. This will only be the second time I've ever gone to this parade. My cousins from New Hampshire are coming for the weekend just for this (and to see us, too). After the parade, we are going to another event where the pipe band is the star of the show. I can only describe it as a wedding reception without the wedding...lol. There is food, open bar, DJ, the pipe band and irish dancers make an appearance. It's going to be a fun weekend. So today is my Friday and I'm also taking Monday off. emoticon

Hi, I did see the doctor last Wednesday. Definitely a nerve issue going on, one of the sciatic ones, but don't know exactly what's causing it. She said if pain continues, might have to do x-rays or MRI. However, she said 2 weeks of ibuprofen and no horseback riding or heavy lifting, and then I have an appt. with PT. It's been about a week, and the pain is lessening. Sometimes I get up from my desk to walk around and there is really not much notice at all. Hooray! I hope it keeps in this direction.

I got some interesting info from a friend on Facebook, who said there is a condition that is seen among horseback riders that mimics sciatica, but it's called something else, and responds to stretching exercises. I need to go look it up.

I am worried a bit about the riding, because definitely the sitting trot and canter are gaits where I am pushing my seat bones into the saddle and there is some jarring because I don't have the timing perfect and of course some horses are more comfortable than others. We'll just have to see how this goes.

Glad the afib is gone for now. Prayers for you on that one!

Jennie..you are right! Getting old sucks!! I felt absolutely wonderful right at 50, but after that it's not been so great! LOL. Did you go see the Dr? What did she/he say? That sounds very painful. You have had quite a bit of trauma to yourself. I used to ride a lot and falling off a horse was painful as a young person...I can't imagine falling now at my age! I have a friend with horses and she wants me to come riding some time. She has a wonderful, gentle horse who I've ridden before that she wants me to ride. For some reason I'm not as anxious to go as I used to be. I do enjoy riding, though.

So far, I haven't had any more afib attacks! emoticon I go to the Dr. next month, but I'm not sure what he'll do or say. Maybe see how my meds are working..he did change the dosage so probably wants to see how that is working.

I hope you all have a great day!

Aagh - this morning it took me over 30 minutes to be able to walk around almost normally. Horrible pain trying to stand up and walk, or even stand up tall. There is definitely a sciatica thing going on. I made an appt. to see the doctor later this afternoon. I now realize that for several months I have been somewhat stiff and sore in that left hip area and thigh, but until it started zapping all the way down to my foot yesterday morning, I didn't recognize it as such. I did have a fall off my horse in March, and got 1 new compression fracture in my spine (upper/thoracic and mid/lumbar), and 1 older one was slightly worse (as noted from a previous x-ray) and a 3rd hadn't changed since a car accident in 2001. So, I think all this is adding up to now pressure on that sciatic nerve. I did read up about it this morning, and it appears that a lot of sciatic pain can go away in about 6 weeks with some treatments including ice, then heat and also exercise. Acupuncture and chiropractic may help, so I will think about those if it's indicated. I've had success with acupuncture years ago for migraines and allergies, but I haven't really cared for chiropractic adjustments. I have ostopenia (precursor to osteoporosis) and worry about a chiro doing more damage than good!

Getting old sucks!
