Work blew up on me this week, so no organized races in December. I'll try to get a run in on Saturday, but it won't be the Reindeer Run.

I gave the Jingle Bell Run a pass this year because of concerns with rehabbing an injured foot. The Reindeer Run is still a "maybe," but I'll likely pass in favor of a less structured solo run that day. It's a Wonderful Run is a pass because I don't want to travel home in the dark on roads I'm not terribly familiar with.

I've been wanting to run the "It's a Wonderful Life 5k" in Seneca Falls. I see it's this Saturday, December 8, 2012 (4:40pm). I also see Fleet Feet Rochester has a bus chartered for 55 but don't know if it's full (bet it is). Alas, I've got to plan sooner. Not in the budget this week. The race is part of the festival this weekend, "The Real Bedford Falls Festival."

I also see there's a race on Saturday, 12/15/2012 benefitting The Strong Museum - Reindeer Run 5k and Kids Run.

And there's always GRTC's 6 race winter series of The Freezeroo! A few years back I won 3rd place or something for the series in my f/age group (mostly because I ran all the races). It's a fun series to keep you running in the winter. I'm feeling a little old for it....

Thanks! I've signed up to get emails from Active.com and Fleet Feet, so I'll hear about a lot of races that way now..

Hope your shins are feeling better soon!

I've run a lot of races. They all are walker-friendly. You can pay an entry fee instead of fund raising - I prefer the entry fee, though I can't always afford that. I'm just getting back into running but have run 3 races this year (placed 1st in F/50-60 but out of 3 of us!) Rochester Police Chase 5k.

There are MANY races locally and there are many resources to find them. Rochester Running Page has a calendar. Greater Rochester Track Club (which I have belonged to in the past). Fleet Feet Sports (NEW Greece store opened on Ridgeway near Long Pond recently). Active.com. All have a list of races. I think Rochester Running Page is the best.

I'm just getting over a shin splint but expect to be back running this week. Joined the Y recently and I did my first Spinning class ever this morning. It was a workout but after class I mentioned something about the fact that I've been a runner for a long time and she said, "Ya, I could tell." emoticon Sauna & whirlpool are a godsend. emoticon I don't run races as often as I used to because it gets expensive.

I ran Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday so far this week, but I'm giving the Jingle Bell Run a pass. I can run Saturday morning early, and still make it to breakfast at 9 with my daughter.

I talked to the folks at Fleet Feet, and it turns out lots of people just pay the entry fee to run and don't ask other people for money. So this one is back on my list of possibles. Drop dead date for a decision would be next Tuesday, because running an organized 5K on Saturday would change the days I run from Sunday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Saturday to Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday.

I looked at the web site for the Jingle Bell Run again. It appears to be focused on getting pledges and collecting money from friends and family. I like to run, and I don't mind paying a larger entry fee to support a charity, but I don't like to do fundraising. So I'm leaning toward giving this one a pass.

Thanks for all the information!

I looked at my calendar again and saw that I have an appt. that morning (12/3) that I probably can't change, so I think I will have to skip it after all...

I believe there's a 5K (?) in December in Brighton, but I don't know anything more about it.

I'm thinking about the Jingle Bell Run and the Race with Grace. www.gandtathletics.info/racewithgrac
e/

The Race with Grace is on Thanksgiving Day, which makes scheduling easier for me; but it's a 10K, which is beyond the distance I'm currently running. If I sign up for that one, I'll have to walk part way.

The Jingle Bell Run would interfere with a standing breakfast date with my daughter. I'll likely make a decision on that one in the next week or two.

A co-worker who has run for years pointed me at the Greater Rochester Track Club and Yellow Jacket Racing sites for locating races:

www.yellowjacketracing.com/race-cale
nd

Races are fewer and further between in the cold weather, but I do want to keep running through the winter.

I don't know specifically how walker-friendly any of these are, as I am new to organized racing. I can tell you that when I ran the Race on the Ridge on November 11, there were a noticeable quantity of walkers still on the course after I'd cooled down and stretched. I think if you know you're going to walk, and you don't crowd to be ahead of people who will start out running, you should be okay.

The Chase Corporate Challenge (end of May each year, typically at RIT on a Thursday evening) is a 3.5 mile course that has around 10 thousand participants; I think more walk than run. But you get there by signing up through your employer as a team. If you don't have other people at work interested in doing that one, it won't be practical.

Is anyone else doing this 5K? I'm considering walking it. I've never done a 5K before, and I thought this would be a fun one! (It's at MCC's Brighton campus.)

(Also, does anyone know of local 5Ks that are walker-friendly?)
