Can you ever get to Beaver Lake? I know that Kris has been going there when they have fun things to do. Maybe at some point we can all meet there.

Hi Kris,

We made plans to go into Auburn today since there wasn't an interest. My dad stopped smoking and is walking. So we're going in to walk with him and spend time with them for awhile. Yes, we'll get together at some point!

My husband and I are going to try zumba on our xbox since nobody sounds interested in walking with us at Shoppingtown. Haha We'll see how zumba on the xbox goes. May even walk on Sunday evening before they close if anyone is interested.

Oh my gosh, 845am? Hahaha My daughters last feeding is between 3 and 4am. rofl I may have to pass on that one until I can get her schedule to change. This motherhood thing isn't as easy as it looked. Hahah

Doug and I can do anything at 11am until maybe 1pm together and then on his days off anything from 11am until the evening. We've decided we'll feed her, change her and if it's a class, we'll try bringing her and putting her in her little monkey seat. She's usually quiet. If not, one of us will sit out and tend to her while the other plays. At least for the first one. We'll see how it goes.

Okay, I REALLY want to get something together with everyone. Do we want to try for this month or is it realistic for next month? If we can't get it together for a class this month is anyone up for a power walk in Shoppingtown Mall? They also have a few options for gym classes and some zumba and I even saw a bike class for training for "i think" marathons near the Dicks Sporting entrance. Would anyone be interested in walking the mall one night next weekend January the 21st or 22nd just to get things started and get to know one another??

**FREE POWER YOGA CLASS** Wednesday Jan 18th Pulse will offer a demo Power Yoga class from 6:45 to 7:45 pm with our very own Mercedes Didio!!! In this dynamic class Mercedes will concentrate on toning the entire body, enhance balance, improve flexibility and build core strength by combining traditional fitness training, focused breathing and strength building through Yoga. All this resulting in a Mind- Body workout that improves health, athletic performance and over all wellness. There are a limited supply of extra mats at the studio. We are however suggesting that you bring your own Yoga mat. HOPE TO SEE YOU!! Namaste:)

Just in case anyone is interested in exploring these various types of exercises. I usually attend these to get a feel for the class to see if it is something that I can stick to.

I would like to go to the Into class. I've been to the Zumba 101 classes at the Pulse before. I'm just starting on my journey to claim my life back. I was in a car accident in feb 2011 (t-boned by another driver) the day following the end of my nursing studies. I've been released medically for about 1 month with a restriction of a sit down job - so nursing is out for me now. Unfortunately the accident reaked hell with my body and I swear that I'm more worst off now than I was before the accident. I know that I have to take it slow, but I'm determined to get there. I will not let this accident take anymore of my life.
The Pulse is not far from my house and would give it another try.

BRSCLS I'm not quite sure where your located but can you share some open dates? Maybe we could work with dates. I too have to depend on my husband. I'm thinking maybe the first meet up I'll try bringing my cousin with me and my husband will watch our daughter.

I can do the 16th, 21st, 22nd, 26th or the 30th of January.

Lets throw some dates out there and get one in the books!

Edited to say I can't do Fridays. I can do a Thursday though which is one of the dates up top. Let me know if anything works! If a date works for everyone else and not for me, that's okay don't cater. I'll catch the bus at another stop so to speak.

JL there are a few of us that live around E. Syracuse., Corelady I'm not all that coordinated anymore either. You wouldn't be alone. It's all in fun and good health.

Maybe if there are more guys who will attend I'll have my cousin babysit and my husband will come along. He's already tried zumba on our xbox so is somewhat familiar with it.

Hi folks! Sorry it took me so long to chime in, but I can't get on SP at work (only cause the site won't work, not cause my boss is mean or anything). I would love, love to host a SP Zumba class! My class is a mix of "Zumba music" (Latin beats) and popular music. My routines offer different variations for high and low impact and they are pretty fun...if I do say so myself! Don't worry if it's your first time, Zumba is for everyone as you can modify the moves as you need. Frankly I don't care what steps you are doing as long as you are moving and having fun! (And hopefully not bumping into other people). :) So if you are interested please let us know so I can get the studio.

Of course if you want to come to regular Zumba classes, meet fun people, and get your butt kicked and enjoy it (yes I promise you'll love it) then check out Pulse Fitness Studio! The classes are fun and affordable! www.pulsecny.com

I have to say it would depend on the date and the weather and if I could get my hubby to drive me there I am such a paranoid driver since my accident. So I can't give a 100% committment.

okay, Megan is thinking a Friday night probably 6:30/7 down at Pulse Fitness & Zumba Studio (she helps out down there!) which is at 713 West Fayette St downtown (super easy on/off of 690 & 81).

HOWEVER.... she needs a commitment from atleast 8 people. I can commit for 2 provided I have enough time to request it off.

She is still looking into cost.

Hi--
I (Janet) would be very interested in getting together with other Syracuse Sparkers. I work all day during the week and I have an unpredictable occasional second job on weekends, so it's hard to plan sometimes. I live in Fayetteville and really love to walk, so walking at the canal for an hour or two sounds like fun to me. (After I lose more of this weight, I could probably step it up to a jog!)
I'd also be interested in the intro Zumba class, depending on where/when it is of course.

Okay, KRAZYKIKI (Megan) is willing to teach us a "intro" Zumba class. She's looking for a low-cost location. Weeknight work for everyone? I know Wednesdays work really great for me because I don't work my second job that night. Or do we want to do a weekend? May depend on where she finds.

Also, if we know how many people she'll have a better idea of how much room we need!

Hi everyone!

So here's an idea, I'm wondering if it would be feasible for everyone to get together 1 day a month for a class.

We could do:

a zumba class

yoga (though I do not believe in the philosophy I think it's a great way to stretch and learn breathing techniques to relax from stress)

Pilates class

Weight training class

Water aerobics class

Mall Walk

THEN in the spring maybe we could figure out the following:
Bike Riding

Kayaking

Hiking

speedwalking

Tennis

Maybe we can get a kickball team (syracuse has a league now)

Swimming

Walking for charity

A fun Camping time to get to know one another

And so goes it.

Some of course would require money for the class if you can do it, but this would be a fun way to get to know one another and encourage us to get fit. It may even help us figure out which type of exercise would fit our own personal needs.

I think to get everyone involved we should keep most classes simple (intro to) and if anyone would like to do a higher impact or more intense training then you can make plans to do so with a friend who's willing or by yourself.

This was just a thought. As I said, it's been hard for my husband and I to balance life as new parents but we can certainly find a sitter for a couple hours once a month. I know a very willing gramma and grampa an hour away who would LOVE to see their grandchild. ((wink, wink))

Lets not forget that in the summer we get together to make quilt blocks and put together a quilt for the New York State Fair which gets shown and then goes on to a child at a local children's hospital....Men are invited to attend (our husbands are usually there) and food is served. Maybe a dish to pass this year so Kris and her daughter don't get all the work. lol

Let me know what you think and maybe we can get something going. The issue is scheduling so I'm wondering how weekends work for everyone? If a weekday is needed the best times for my husband and I are 11am classes OR the days he gets off at the hospital either a Tues or Thursday depending on the week.

ive been on spark since 2008.... highest weight was 284 pounds.
lowest weight was 154, last july.
having a rough time currently, as kris knows.... my dog and fil passed away last july, within a week of one another. [both had cancer. my pup had to be put down.]
my s/o and i have to move from syracuse, where we both grew up, to virginia. his job is being relocated and finding something similar here is not an option at all. so, we are selling this house, trying to find another house down there. [incidentally, gorgeous house in bridgeport for sale!! almost an acre and backyard is already fenced in!!]
it seems relatively easy until you factor in the fact that virginia, near washington dc, isnt like here at all.... we're trying to find a house similar to this, with similar acreage, and that isnt an hour and a half away from his work. its like trying to find a needle in 4 million haystacks.
add to that his sister is fighting breast cancer--stage IV--and its progressing, unfortunately.
so, yeah.... stress.

so, im floundering. cant seem to keep calories down. cant seem to bump exercise up.
but, im here.... still trying.

i too wish the spark syracuse team was more active. where is yarell? ive been wondering for ages.

I have seen some really great ideas and goals in this thread, very impressive. I hope to use it to keep me going when that urge to give up comes along.

Last year I let myself go, and before I knew it I was not only the heaviest I've ever been but 16 pounds over the previous "heaviest I've ever been" weight.

The game changer was when I opened a door and it opened into my belly. Did I misjudge the door? Apparently I'm not used to how far my belly sticks out!!!

So not only am I changing what I eat and how, but I'm learning to cook using recipes.sparkpeople.com - sweet deal right? I lose weight and learn to cook.

I'll be unstoppable. buahahahahaha emoticon

Thank you so much for this as I have been so focused on the weight I've gained and how heavy I am with belly fat not to mention the way I look after the c-section. My hope for 2012 is that God would prune the sin and replace it with the "fruit of the spirit". That, like you is about a change in attitude. I look at my daughter and I don't want to leave her an orphan. In fact, before we try again for another child I REALLY need to get healthy and lose weight so I can handle the process since it's already high risk for me.

My self esteem is horrific right now and I feel as though I've been eaten by a monster. I won't go any further because it's self sabotage and not worth it. I'm going to commit to exercise daily and we're working on "getting clean". ((sniff, sniff) I'm praying that this year it REALLY Sticks. I have to want this bad enough to follow through. Stick a pic up of my husband, daughter and a scripture up to remind me that this is a vessel God has loaned me. I MUST take care of it.

Love to you all and looking forward to sharing with you.

I did better than normal over the holidays, but sure could've done a lot better. However, I'm not beating myself up over this, but instead pushing ahead to make 2012 the best year.

I suggest everyone make a list of their goals, so they are documented, and check on the status of them monthly. They don't even have to be weight/health related.

I'm all for getting together with other spark people, especially if its something active. I just recently quit another support group that I had been paying for, so will be using Spark a lot more now for support.

I had gastric bypass in 2007, and originally lost over 150 pounds. Over the last year I've gained weight, and need to stop the gain now. I am on the right path, but do need daily support, and to keep active.

Looking forward to more Spark support and meeting some of you.

Hi SYRACUSE!! I really live in OHIO but joined this thread a few years back b/c I spend all summer in upstate NY in the Adirondack Park. At that time I was going back and forth to Syracuse Airport fairly frequently. We don't do that so much anymore since my dh has retired and my kids have kids and can't get out here as much. BUT.... I still hope some day to connect with my Spark-Sisters in Syracuse.

I want to encourage you all to keep this thread alive and to do the work to get together. It doesn't have to be every other month even. A couple times a year would be great. Just to have that face to face is so cool...to really feel like you KNOW the people you are sharing your life with over the internet is so much better.

I have met up with a few folks from OH and Michigan over the years and I really appreciate those relationships just b/c I have MET them!

I, like many of you, have dieted on and off for too long. I'm older than most of you, it looks like, so I may have been at this longer....I was fairly slim all my life till the mid 40s. I also have cystic ovaries but my symptoms may not have been as severe. However at this point, I have the thinning hair, the hypothyroidism and menopause has been weird. After my m 40s hit, every time I'd lose weight, I'd gain it back more quickly and with an added 5 or 10 lbs. Well it doesn't take too many times to really put on a lot of weight! I just sort of gave up for a few years. Dieting did not seem to be the answer.

A few years ago, my dh was diagnosed with kidney cancer. The first round was Dec. of 2007. They removed his kidney and told us they had gotten it all and he would be fine. 6 months later in a routine follow-up, they discovered the cancer was everywhere....liver, lungs, spine, pelvis, ribs, brain. We were totally blindsided. Statistically, he had 3 to 6 months to live. There are almost no effective treatments for metastatic kidney cancer. We got 3 opinions from various experts and they all told us the same thing.

We did all we could medically speaking.....making use of God's gifts of doctors and medicine to the best of our knowledge and resources but our hope was always in God's plan for our lives. We didn't know if that meant healing or death...but our desire was to trust HIM. It sounds so good, but boy...it can really be hard. We didn't do it perfectly, that is for sure, but that was always our goal and still is.

We are fortunate to be a part of two different wonderful church families...one in OH and one in NY. We had many prayer warriors interceding for us as we walked through the journey. The last thing on my mind was my eating/exercise. BUT....as Dan got sicker and sicker, more and more responsibilities fell to me. Especially the physical things that I had turned over to him more and more as I got heavier and he retired. I realized that I could not keep going like this and take good care of him.

Fast forward to late summer 2009. Already he has lived past his predicted life span and things began to improve. He had lost 70 lbs. with the cancer and gotten down to 140. He is 6'5" so he looked like he was a concentration camp victim...really! He began to put weight on again very slowly. But much of that weight loss had been muscle and he couldn't support his spine which also had deteriorated from the cancer and had at least a couple of stress fractures. He was in miserable pain. From my nursing days, I knew that he needed strong muscles to support his spine and felt certain that while all the pain might not go away, that he could relieve SOME of it by strengthening his core. He began with physical therapy with a wonderful therapist. When he had improved some she cleared him to begin working with a trainer. (Jan. 2010)I went with him. My goal was to get stronger and to lose weight. His was to get stronger and to gain weight! We both were told to do the same things.

We began to "eat clean" (organic as much as possible, no sugar, no processing, only complex carbs and very lean, free range meat/chicken/eggs, almost no dairy, only extra virgin olive oil) Dan continued to improve and I slowly lost some weight.

Well then summer hit and we couldn't meet with our trainer. WE tried to do the programs on our own...but I have to tell you...it wasn't the same. On top of that, we had non-stop company at the lake and I fell into old bad habits of desserts and too much food. Organic stuff is almost impossible to get in the boonies. I ended up re-gaining half of what I'd lost (sound familiar?)

Well by Jan. of 2011, my net loss was only 10 lbs. Dan was still improving although our clean eating had slipped some (he was getting too much sugar which is BAD for cancer patients!) and I was determined to do SOMETHING to get this weight off.

A friend had gone to a doctor and gotten the HCG program and was having good success. Her dh is a bio-medical neo-natal researcher and felt what she was doing was safe, so I decided to do it. I have been through the program 2 1/2 times over the last year (I'm just about to begin the stabilization part of round 3) and now my net weight loss is over 75 lbs.

I have read all the warnings (they came out AFTER I got on this plan) and don't quite know what to think about that. I do know that I'd have preferred to do it more "naturally" but had found no way to make that work.

Of course the REAL challenge will be to KEEP it off long term. I have been working on my attitude and my thinking about that and am praying that I will be able to manage.

I HATE exercise fo the sake of exercising but LOVE being active so I'm trying to find things to do regularly that I enjoy. One is bike riding. I have found a group of women in my community who ride regularly. I also signed up with my dd for a long bike ride challenge to raise money for cancer research. In 2010 we formed a team in honor of dh and between our team, raised about $15,000 for The James Cancer Center at Ohio State University. The challenge is called "The Pelotonia" and is ridden in August. She rode 180 miles. I did the 46 miles leg. This year she is riding with her son on a tag-along and I don't know if I am doing it or not. I probably will. But that requires some training. It should be easier being 75 lbs. lighter!

I want to really encourage you young women to keep on with this and "get it" before you reach my age. When I think of all the time I lost being overweight and unhappy with myself...... Yes, there was a lot of stress in those years and I can blame it on that....but really...if I'd had my focus where it should have been, I would have been leaning on God for comfort and peace instead of food and my unhappiness with ME would not have been adding to my stress. That momentary release is a lie and only makes things worse.

SO....(wow...this is way longer than I planned!) do whatever it takes to keep your thread alive and vibrant and keep encouraging each other!! Maybe this is the year I'll get to Syracuse to meet each of you!! Jo

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. Prov. 3:5-6

Hi there! I was active in 2009 where I lost weight and got pregnant with my miracle baby. He sadly passed away and we were then focused to have another child. September we gave birth to our little baby bear Amelia and after a C-section because of her unwillingness to turn from breech I am now Okayed by Dr.'s to start back up.

Both my husband and I have gained a whole lot of weight. I'm concerned for our health and well-being and we're both having the toughest time getting back into the swing of things where overeating and junk food is concerned. Don't get me wrong we DO know how to eat healthy and have whole grains as well as fruits, veggies and a stocked meat freezer but since I was on bed rest for 9months we've gotten into the habit of eating out. We go to Panera and Mcdonalds. I started eating the grilled chicken sandwich and a water now when we go to mcD's but I'd like to get back to making everything from scratch again. It's just REALLY hard to balance a baby with reflux/gas/schedule issues around lack of energy and the need to oversleep.

I'd love to get to a local zumba class or something. Our problem (doug and I) is that we don't have someone to babysit for us all the time and while we'd love to take her and wear in in the baby carrier I think we'd get odd looks. Tomorrow we're going to try to get out and walk her in the stroller if it's nicer.

I don't know, should we walk around Shoppingtown Mall? I'd love to get together but am not quite sure how we'll juggle our infant daughter.

Hello to everyone!!

Proud follower of Jesus Christ. My Lord and Savior.

In the past we've tried a number of times to get the Sparkers together and it has never panned out. There were a few walks, mainly the Make a Wish Walk, where folks joined us, but that was it. Last summer I tried to do a walk along the Erie Canal & a kickball game but no one showed up. I'm willing to try it again if y'all want!!

I had been very active on SP as well, just not so much on the Syracuse boards (wasn't getting much involvement). But I'm more than willing to give it another shot!!!!

So, any suggestions on keeping the boards alive?????

I live pretty far out in the boonies - between Cazenovia and Hamilton - but I'd be willing to make the trek into Syracuse a time or two a month if we wanted to do something together - anything from a group walk/snowshoe - maybe Highland Forest or something (I can walk probably ten miles in three hours) to just getting together at someone's house to complain about weight loss and exercise and swap tips.

I'm pretty much open, and I'd love to meet some Sparkies in person.

Hi
I for one am very active with spark, I have been with spark for 2 years now. and yes I was kind of naughty at the Holidays time, and I am getting back on track, it takes time but you know I think half the battle is knowing there is a problem and the winning half is that we are wanting to do something about it. and I for sure do.. I refuse to go back to the 330 lbs girl I was I refuse to be depressed and hate my self my life is so much better today and I have spark to thank.
I will do anything to keep my goals check and stick with them. matter of fact I joined Triliusms Biggest Loser program today one I needed a change of pace from the Y in Fayetteville I am so excited cannot wait to go

so suggestions about this team, I wish we were as active as some of the other teams I belong to only because this is Syracuse, I love to bike, walk, run. and do 5ks and wish there was other sparker in this area that I can do it with.
so do have some suggestions but my main one is that we get this borard hopping
what do you say

Anita

Hi...My name is Kris and I lost my SPARK. I was doing really well until the stress of the holidays hit and then I just lost all motivation. No real good excuse.

But....I have a feeling that I'm not alone.

So......what do we do??? Do we need some more chatter? Some goals?? Some challenges??? Tell me what you think!!!!

Speak up Spark Syracuse!!!!
