Joyce, I believe that you recently retired. That can cause a temporary depression because it changes our entire life & daily routine. It's a big adjustment to make but you will succeed.

The holidays also contribute to depression for many, many people but we're past them now.

emoticon First FULL week of 2018...
Christmas is past, New Years is past, Epiphany is over....no more party foods!

It is time to get real with 2018 emoticon

But I haven't found a word for 2018 yet...."Find fun in the surprises" "Surprised by Joy"
"Rejoice" yes, rejoice might do, that could help counteract the recent depression.

I started this last year. I have already chosen my word to focus on for 2018. It is Accountability. I will hold myself accountable for doing what I need to do to reach my goals.

Haven't started yet....How helpful is a "Word" for the year? How do you use it?

Have any of you made goals for 2018? Word for 2018? Planned any outings for 2018... outings as in hiking, trailblazing, races, etc .. things to become a more healthier version of you?

I am working on a document with goals and ways to reach those goals for each. (Mini goals)

I came up with my yearly Word for 2018. My Word is RENEW.

I'm fine tuning them this week. What about y'all?

Hi, my name is Jan and I am new to the team. I've been off Spark for about a year, but it's time to get back, get involved, and get healthy. Looking forward to getting some fellow Missourians from around the state. I'm in Lee Summit, which is just outside Kansas City.

Spent 8:00 am to 4:30 pm in a continuing ed class, so I'm tired. Had under 800 steps when I got home. Went on the Wii & did Walk It Out for 30 minutes & now have 3,916 steps. Was going a little slow because I am tired. Good night all.

It's been a weird time for a while. The thyroid condition has been causing some hair loss & the doctor sent me to a dermatologist. We tried several things that I didn't feel were really helping & she gave me a prescription to try which my doctor was monitoring with monthly bloodwork. He did the first one before I started taking the prescription. After a month, he took another one & told me that my sodium levels were down & to let the dermatologist know to see what she wanted to do. She wanted me to continue the meds, so my doctor took another blood test a month later & said the sodium levels were too low. I asked him if some of the symptoms I had been having were caused by that & he said yes, stop taking the med immediately. I contacted the dermatologist to let he know that I was stopping the med & she suggested another one we could try. It was pretty expensive & I declined.

Problem over, right? No, not quite. After stopping the med, I gained about 1 pound every day. By day 10 I was ready to call the doctor because I had gained 12 pounds. I decided to call him the next day. The next morning I was down 1 pound so I put off contactinng him. The weight has continued to drop but not as fast as it went up. So far, only 5 pounds gone of the 12 that was added. Needless to say, I'm not real thrilled by that.

The good news is that I am back to feeling normal (whatever normal is) & have more energy. I'm back to exercisiing every day & ready to get back to de-cluttering & cleaning. I am starting the 30 Day Decluttering Challenge today. Bring it on!

An additional message from Spark Guy -

Hello SparkPeople!

I’m writing to tell you some background and goals for our new Community Goal Feed!

This is an exciting new feature that will motivate you to take one small step to reach your goals in a fun and simple way. With your support, we hope to make this one of the most positive sources of social support in the world.

As part of this launch, we are challenging our members to reach 1 million posts to the Community Feed. I will be posting to the feed just about every day and hope you will join me to both reach your goals and help us reach 1 million posts together!

There are 3 types of posts you can make to the Community Goal Feed:
1) Text post sharing anything you’d like to say
2) Photo with any text you’d like to add
3) Completed goals posted directly to the feed (and include optional comment and/or photo). Goals can be selected from the 4 main areas of: Nutrition, Fitness, Motivation, and Other Goals. The feed will then display the type of goal you selected plus your optional comment. The goal selection process will be easy to understand once you start to make a post.

We’re very excited about having this type of community feed for the first time at SparkPeople building on our longtime supportive community. But I’m especially excited about being able to post Goals directly to the feed. I’ll share more about the reasons for this below.

As quick background, I originally started SparkPeople after putting together a personal improvement program that helped me conquer social anxiety. This program integrated the best of health and fitness with the best of goal-setting, leadership, motivation, and behavioral psychology. A co-worker used the same program and eventually lost 50 pounds and told me I changed her life. She went on to motivate a group of other people who said, “Pat, if you can do it, we can do it!” This was the original “spark” that led to SparkPeople – which then led to reaching our mission to “spark” millions of people to reach their goals using health and fitness as a springboard to success in all areas of life.

We believe this Community Goal Feed is one of the best uses we’ve ever had for this underlying program that integrates these areas in a way that makes it fun to reach goals – both because of the social support and the wide range of goals we’ll all be encouraged to track and share.

Another piece of background is that we have always had 4 main types of features on our site/app:
1) Tracking tools like nutrition and fitness tracker
2) Expert articles and videos from our team
3) A supportive community made up of people motivating each other
4) SparkPoints gamification as a way to make it fun to reach one small goal at a time.

For the first time ever with this community feed, we are integrating all 4 types of features into one main feature! We call this integration of goals into a community feed “socially-enabled goal tracking.” We think this will make the SparkPeople feed unlike any other type of feed and will make it valuable for our members to participate in this feed even if you already use other social feeds like Facebook. We will continue building out this feature including adding goal reports for goals posted to the feed plus several other ideas.

The Community Goal Feed can become a central place for all of us to “hang out” for this type of accountability to each other and to both motivate other people and be motivated by others – and have fun together. I plan to post to the feed several times per day as a way to keep me motivated and accountable to reach my goals. You can think of posting and commenting to the feed as a simple challenge that could change your life!

We hope to build a community spirit where we comment on each other’s posts for support and motivation. We’ve always seen in our community that even the smallest comments can make a big impact on someone. You don’t have to be an expert to motivate someone else. Every person has an ability to motivate other people. Even “liking” posts is a great way to show your support to other members. Once you start doing this, you might find that it’s addictive to spark other people to reach their goals by being a Healthy Leader and this positivity will translate to your own life.

If you are interested in updates on the feed, just follow my blog and I’ll send out periodic announcements.

We want to make this the most motivational and useful tools around for reaching goals in a fun environment.

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you posting to the SparkPeople Community Goal Feed!

Here is a quick screenshot showing how the feed will look:

Here is a notice from Coach Jen about a new change that will appear on our home pages. You will have to copy & paste the link to go to the preview page.

Hi everyone!

I wanted to give you a heads up about a new feature we'll be launching in the next day or two. We're very excited to introduce our Community Goal Feed, a place to post updates and photos, share your goal progress and tell others a little more about yourself! This feed will be found on your Start page (on the full site) or homescreen (through the app). Here's a link to what the Start page will look like:

view_mar2017.pdf

We think this feed will make it even easier for people to share and get the support they need to reach all of their healthy living goals. We're hoping you all can play a key role in being active in the feed, both by your own posting and commenting/liking others posts. know you'll likely have some questions about how it's all going to work, but we'll be posting a blog about all of the details as soon as the feature launches. We just wanted you to be aware that it's coming.

Thanks so much for your support!

Coach Jen

Just wondering if anyone else here is doing a 40 Days 40 Items challenge for Lent? I am not Catholic & have never done the giving up something for lent thing, but when I heard about this I decided to do it. You put one item a day to get rid of in a bag & at the end of 40 days, drop it off wherever it goes. I have a bag for shoes to go to the Shoeman, a bag for items to go to Goodwill & a bag for items to go to the dumpster. Every little bit helps.

Here is a link for information about the Shoeman Project just in case you have shoes to get rid of.

Tired, but it is a good tired. I've been CLEANING. I'm determined to have the living room & hopefully, the bedroom cleaned completely before the new windows are installed. The fun part, is I don't know exactly when that will be. He is going to do it when the weather permits & he has a free day so I will have one day notice. The furniture in the living room is moved around & the wood floor is clean & shiny on one side of the room. Going to try to finish the other side of the room tomorrow, but I don't have the energy I used to have so it may take two more days. At least right now he can move the sofa & end tables from in front og the windows without getting attacked by dust bunnies.

I'm sure glad that today is ending th old year & not starting the new year. I went to Walmart to pick up a few things & to pick up two online orders. Just before I got out of the car, I discovered that I had lost my list somewhere. OK, I'd just have to do my best to remember what was on it. Then the rubber band that was holding my hair back broke & I only had one clip with me. I put what I could into the clip & the rest had to just stay loose. Except that the wind was blowing - hard - from my back. Could I really go into Walmart like this? Than I thought of some of the people I'd seem in there & in I went. There frozen chicken breasts were $3.00 higher than Aldis which was on the other side of the plaza. Did I really want to go into Aldis looking like this? No, but I also didn't want to have to make another trip for the chicken. I ran in, got my chicken & got in the checkout landm hoping I wouldn't see anyone I know. God smiled on me & I didn't see anyone I knew. Or maybe He was laughing at me?

Iknow there are some genealogy enthusiasts here....I've just discovered a fun thing!

I am working two sites: Find A Grave and Family Search.org
2 months ago visited a small rural cemetery where Uncle Floyd is buried...got picture of his headstone and then snapped about 10 random headstones just ??

So yesterday made a Memorial for Uncle Floyd and then checked out the other photos and 8 of them were useable...as in no Memorials or memorial with no photo.
Then I found a feature on Find A Grave where there are photo requests and more than a dozen requests are for the small cemetery in my town....So next warm weather I'll be walking the cemetery with my camera for my exercise!

My 5.5 miles of walking Thursday was in a theme park "Silver Dollar City" Branson MO.
Fitbit gave me 26 flights of stairs as I rode three roller coasters. Also walked the cave which was an honest 13 flights of stairs.
Delightful day.

Know your Dad greatly appreciates you. Safe travels. Planned to retire to Bolivar in December, but plans change. Decided to stay here and work a couple of days a week, same job. So guess that is called semi-retirement!

Work is a little slow today. Have things to do but nothing urgent. Weather is pretty with a sprinkle now & then.

Enjoy your day.

Just had a bone density test yesterday and the Vitamin D3 that the doctor put me on last year seems to be helping. I also take a generic form of Fosamax once per week for the bones. Hope you find something that works for you, Joyce.

My Doctor (new one) Drew blood for evaluation of Vit D
I have 2 indicators...losing bone mass and depression.
Vit D level should be between 30 and 100 and my result was 22

Expecting a prescription for Vit D and good results!

Well, the doctor didn't do the surgery on my foot today. He wants to try a couple of other things first. Seems the problem isn't on the outside of the foot, but the shape of the bones inside my foot. When he said that, I remembered that my mother had the same thing & they went in through the top of her foot & cut small wedges out of the tops of the bones to make them straighter instead of so curved. He did modify the insoles to take pressure off that part of the foot & sent me for x-rays. I will see him again in 3 months. Now that he modified the insoles, it is much more comfortable to walk.

Thank you Joyce for your commitment. Those things benefit others so much, but we also receive benefits from doing them.

Went to a great meeting yesterday, so I didn't do much at home. The group makes jewelry & sells it to help finance a house for rescues human trafficking victims in the St. Louis area. I like making jewelry & I like helping those that need help, so this is a win-win situation for me.

My Fitbit showed 4.0 miles 10,000 steps all taken inside my hospital on the 4th... emoticon .which was a good thing. When I stepped out into the parking lot at 11pm I could hardly breath!

Between the humidity of 95% emoticon and the chemical residue of all the fireworks.. emoticon emoticon .there was BAD air pollution.

Hi, Missourians! As part of my SparkPeople goals, I have started a project to document my life adventure. http://happytrailshiking.com/index.htm
I have started with Missouri State Parks because my husband and I love hiking there. If you are so inclined, please check it out!

I regularly take a variety of classes on Coursera from different universities around the country. Actually they offer classes from universities around the world. A great variety of topics.

I also am studying genetic genealogy, increasing my understanding of DNA & how to use it in genealogy research.

It appears you did not die on the trail because you have been able to use your computer.
Yep...did that once...had a child with me too emoticon (Bad memory)

We are at the end of "Brain Awareness" month including Alzheimer Awareness...so how have you challenged your brain this month? perhaps with learning something new?

I signed up for a class at work and was on the waiting list...18 hours notice to show up today!
I am learning more computer stuff "OneNote" on Google it is "OneDrive" Skype and...something else. There will be lots of print outs to take home (support for the old brain)

I've been known to do lots of things that weren't considered to be best choices. Today I added another one. For some unknown reason, I decided to go to Powder Valley & walk the trails. That was not a wise decision for a combination of (1) heat in the 90s (2) steep hills (3) asthma. At one point I kind of accepted the fact that I was going to die right there on the trail & some poor, unsuspecting hiker was going to come along & find me.

OK, no more doctor's appointments until the end of July. I couldn't believe it Wednesday when I called for an appointment with a dermatologist & they had one open for that day if I could be there in 1-1/2 hours or the next open appointment was the middle of July. I got there in 1-1/2 hours. I need to get something done about my hair coming out. Thank goodness, it's not big chunks at a time, but still.

My doctor took all the labs on Monday to rule out thyroid, etc. & they came back good. He thinks it is stress, but referred me to the dermatologist. I sure hope she can help.

He also referred me to a podiatrist & told me that it will involve minor foot surgery. Ha! Minor to him, but I'm the one they will be cutting on. I knew for a long time that I needed to go, but put off mentioning it until Monday. Now that I'm exercising so much, I have to get my foot fixed.

Good news is, now I can get back to de-cluttering & cleaning on a regular basis. Surprised to discover that I'm really excited about that.

Getting really to leave for a noon panel discussion on Human Trafficking & Youth in Care. Foster kids are easy prey for the traffickers because they're so desparate for someone to love them. So sad.

I did that last year. My main problem aside from the entire process, was that I hate Gatorade. But obviously I survived. Hope you get/got great results.

Had a colonoscopy ... no more 'GoLightly'. !!
They have a much better prep now: gatorade and miralax. Much easier on the system as I did not have to spend 2 hours in the bathroom afraid to leave. But it got the job done.

After today I can only work in my room in the morning, because there will be another teacher using it in the afternoons through the fourteenth... we have to be out of our rooms by the 17th!!!!

I posted the questions for yesterday & today because I apparently forgot yesterday. I was in a hurry to meet a friend for breakfast & so I didn't follow my regular routine. That's OK, I had a great time playing catch-up with her & now I've played catch-up with all of you.

I'm really tired tonight, but it's the good kind of tired. The kind that happens when you accomplish something. I have two pantries - one has grocery products & the other has cleaning supplies, medical supplies, etc. For a long time I've wanted to switch them, but just kept putting it off because I knew how much work it would be & what a mess it would make while I was doing it. Yesterday I took all of the cleaning supplies, etc. out of the one pantry & started recovering the shelves. Today I finished covering the shelves & moved all the food products. That one is finished & looks good. The other one is now empty & ready for me to clean & then put all the "stuff" on the shelves. That's my project for tomorrow. I'll be glad when both of them are finished. I like it better already.m Got lots of steps in too, going back & forth moving the stuff.

U'm not really sure how sewing room got connected to junk room, but that does seem to be the rule.

Nice indeed!
I spent 2 hours clearing in my sewing room...why is sewing room synonymous with 'junk room'?

Yesterday I stopped by Big Lots to pick up a couple of things. They had someone standing at the door handing out coupons for 20% off of everything yesterday only. Nice!

No, it's so much fun that I think I'll keep it. You can turn the mirror image off & on. Actually, I was having so much fun with it that I didn't realize how many calories I was burning & I really did work up a sweat.
