When I lived in Maine, I had lost control on an icy, snowy road and ended up doing a 180 spin. Luckily there wasn't any traffic. I learned that the brakes should be used sparingly. Instead, down shift or lift your foot off the gas and allow the snow to slow you down. Allow plenty of distance to slow down before reaching the stop.

All that and we're just as smart and productive. There's really no reason for tall people to exist at all but as a group, short people are very kind to those less fortunate souls."

I've been doing a lot of winter driving lately, and find I'm better just slowing down, and even downshifting in really bad conditions. Don't be afraid to drive in a way that you feel safe and secure, and don't worry about other drivers if you can. Glad you made it home safe, and you've gotten some great advice about reducing your anxiety the next time!

I too find deep breathing to be very helpful. What you do is inhale allowing your lower abdomen to expand. As you exhale, your abdomen will contract think of a part of your body relaxing. Inhale, exhale tell your scalp to relax, inhale, exhale and tell your neck to relax. Your shoulders, back, chest etc. to relax. I call it a twenty minute meditation.

I understand. WE have had more snow in the first months of this year than in the three years we've been here. According to the Germans it's the most snow they've had in the last 30 years.
I understand the anxiety driving in snow and slush. Now add to that some of the freeways (autobahn) here have no speed limit and idiots that will try any speed.

I'm glad you made it safely. Remember, there is only supposed to be less than a month of winter (that's what keeps me going!)

Glad you got home ok. It sounds like two things were going on -- your thoughts (maybe, how dangerous it is to drive in snow, maybe picturing what would happen if you skid, worrying about an accident?) and your physical reaction (tensing back muscles, fingers tightening on the steering wheel, shallow breathing?) To attack anxiety in the future, try addressing either aspect: Thoughts -- remind yourself you are a good driver, that an accident is unlikely, picture yourself arriving home safe. Physical: take a deep breath (not to many or you might get *too* relaxed [smile], shrug your shoulders and move your spine around to release muscle tension.
Congratulations on driving safely home, and best wishes to you in the future!

I have found that deep breathing while driving stressed really helps me calm down and keeps me focused.

I'm glad you got home safely!

I had such a horrible drive last night. It was snowing and slushy and dark! The whole ride home (15 mins) I was super anxious and just worried I was going to lose control of the car. When I finally got home I broke down a little and just cried. My body was full of anxiety and I just couldn't keep it in. I tried to do my PM Yoga and was so stiff and sore in my back. I'm glad I did the routine, but man, could I feel the difference after going through that!

Really, the weather wasn't that bad, it's just been a long time since I drove in the snow...like 10 years!!!

Just wanted to share.
