Hi there.
My name is Siegrid, I am new to this team. Hubby and I have an 11 year old registered quarter horse mare that we bought 3 years ago. We don't compete anymore. We did before the kids were born over 30 years ago. Barrel racing and such. These days we just want to enjoy ourselves.

Hi everyone! My name's Lisa and I just joined this team. I've been searching around the site for someone (or a group of someones) who share my love and addiction for horses! Between myself and my daughter (she's 10) we own 4 quarter horses. One is a mare and 3 geldings. We compete in barrel racing and really enjoy the time spent together throughout the year. We travel some, so getting to experience that with my daughter is awesome! I've been tracking with sparkpeople off and on for a year now and I LOVE it! Riding is so much more enjoyable for me, without the extra weight, so I can't wait to get a few more pounds off before the spring races start!

I started leasing an ex-racehorse (TB) last spring and he is the most amazing thing in my life right now. I like showjumping and we did our first couple shows together in the summer pulling a couple of thirds. He has crazy moments, but isn't that just personality? and when we have a good day it's amazing! heh. Would love to go every day but just isn't in my budget at the moment. and agree with donnamaxx, horses are definitely my stress relief. When I'm at the barn it's like everything else vanishes.

Hi everyone. I am new to this team and just wanted to introduce myself. I am a married mother of 3 grown children and have 7 grandchildren. I also have 6 dogs, 2 cats and 2 horses. I work as a nurse midwife and don't have nearly as much time with my babies - 2 or 4 legged as I would like. My horses are my stress relief. After a long day, or a difficult birth, I walk out to the field with brush in hand and tell them all about my day. They never judge or complain and they listen so intently. After I'm done we all feel better!

I have an 18-year-old Arabian gelding. He is predominantly Polish breeding. We do trail riding and I ride him Western.

I have Tennessee Walkers. I"ve ridden everything from sheltin ponies to Belgians! I love my TWH. You can definantly ride them western. That's what we ride in. I've ridden in English and western. I've showed them in English and western. I prefer western. It is a lot different riding gated versus non-gated. And there are gaited horses that neck rein. The biggest thing to get used to or learn is HOW to ride a gaited horse. I really can't explain it too you though..lol. I'm one of those people who can show you better than tell you..lol

I have ridden quarter /stock type horses all my life, and am seriously considering buying a gaited horse for trail riding.... any advice or suggestions on what to look for? Is there a big learning curve? I'd still be riding in a western saddle and would love to find a gaited horse that neck reins.

Hi, Dot, Joanna and everyone else - I haven't been on in ages! I thought I would post here because I just bought a new horse last week. She ("Colette') is an 8 y.o. Appendix Quarter horse (3/4 QH, 1/4 TB). Bay and beautiful! I will post some pics.

The lovely pinto horse we were leasing for the last year, Pi, will be going home Dec. 1. We had fun with him, but he came up lame after we did our first ever horse trial in June - don't be too impressed, it was Baby Beginner Novice, so jumps were 18-24", but our first time being out on cross-country! I was terrified, lol! We did great, and got first in our division! When he came up lame, had the vet out after a bit, and he was showing signs of navicular syndrome, according to the heel blocking he did. Gave him quite a bit of time off, new high-heeled bar shoes, isoxsuprine meds, and brought him back to work. He is fully sound now for a few months, but we have not jumped him again due to concern with aggravating that leg, and that's why he's going back; he really loves to jump, flat work is not his thing, and it's expensive to keep a horse with shoes and special care like that. His owner is excited to have him back, and will take great care of him.

Dot - it sounds like you are probably in recovery - my prayers to you. I will have surgery on Dec. 5 for my wrist that I broke in July (not on Pi, who was lame, but on one of my trainer's horses who kept bucking after fences).

Hi ya'll! Just joined the team. My name is Jennifer. I'm a wife and mother of two children. We have 4 horses. Tennessee Walkers. I don't think there is any breed of horse that I don't like! LOL I've been around them every since I can remember. My children have been around them since they were born. My husband on the other hand....hadn't so much as touched one until he met me. So he's still learning about them. He's ridden with me a couple times. Still trying to get him "into" horses.

Hello All,

I am so sorry for being MIA. I have had a lot going on. Going to doctor's and having tests. Everything has come out ok so far.

I haven't been feeling very well. Nothing serious just some stomach upset and hurting body. Which isn't anything new really.

Montysmamma, I am so sorry that you haven't been able to be with your horses. I know how hard that must be. Do you get to go home during the year at all? You are lucky that you have family that is keeping them for you. I hope that you will be able to get back and be with them soon. I will pray for you that everything works out so that you can go see them.

On the 18th I have to go and have a procedure done, first on the left side where they kill the 4 nerves at the base of my spine, with laser. They can only do one side at a time. So then on the 27th I will have the right side done. I was also told that for the first 2 to 3 weeks after, the pain could be a lot worse than it is now. I don't know how that is going to work out. It is pretty bad as it is now. I will have to wait and see how it is going to be. They probably will need to give me more pain medicine too.

I will make sure that I keep you all up to date with my progress.

We have been getting rain since yesterday. It is suppose to let up for a while. The wind is suppose to be picking up really bad. Maybe up to 50 mph gusts or higher. We could also lose the power too. I hope that that doesn't happen because our generator isn't fixed yet. We have plenty of lights, and we also have a gas cook stove too. We would need the generator for the refrigerator mostly.

Hope that everyone weather is better than here, Hope that everyone can stay warm and dry.

Hope everyone can enjoy their day.

Hello All,

Joanna, you sure do have a lot. Are all the ones that you listed, yours? Are the 2 Quater horses, Morgans? I believe that they usually are.

You are such a very special person. You are doing something that is very important. I really do envy you for you being able to do that. I love horses a lot but never have I been able to have one. When I was a child I was brought to some farm and was able to ride on the horses. It was so much fun. They are such a wonderful animal. They come in so many different breeds.

I hope that they all can find a really good home where they will be loved and taken really good care of.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. So that you will be able to help out those horses that have been abused or just left to die, Thank you for doing what you do. You are such a wonderful person.

Hope everyone can enjoy their day.

Best wishes to all!

Ahhh lets see, 2 Appys, 9 Arabians, 3 Quarter Horses, 1 Paint Stallion and 2 paints and a Painted Pony, 2 National Show Horses (half Saddlebred half Arab), and 2 brand Warmbloods. Now...should I also include all the rest I have on the farm as they are mine for the time being since I am a rescue. Nawwwww I will just say we are a very mixed breed farm. Oh I forgot my little Halflinger.

Hello All,

Saddlebred, I am very happy that you have a rescue Saddlebred. I am very happy to hear that you love her a lot. It is good that she challenges you too. I hope that you are ok riding her. How long have you had her? Are you training her in anything specific?

I am sorry for not being on this team more often. I know that I am one of the Team Leader's for this team. I don't want anyone to think that I am not available for them when they need help with something.

If for any reason anyone needs help on this team, please send me an email to my personal email. It is "imagingpro@fairpoint.net" I will be more than happy to give you any help that you need, if I can.

Hope that everyone can enjoy their day.

I don't have any horses now (dang it!!) but I had an arabian Mare and foal when I was a teenager. They were soooo gorgeous, and so full of character. I love arabs, but that is all I was around when I was young, I would love to get to know some saddlebreds, TB's and warmbloods. I am hoping to lose enough weight to be able to take lessons again soon.

I am so moved by all of the generous horse rescuers! If I had a barn and a field I would rescue too, unfortunately I live in town and boarding is way to expensive.

You all sound like wonderful horse people, and I am so glad I found this group.

Hello All,

I think that the Arabian horses are really beautiful too. I am happy that she was able to change your mind about the breed. I am very happy for you that you fell in love with her right off.

I am always looking for horses when we are driving around. I just love them so much and they are such beautiful animals. I really wish that my life would of turned out better than it has. I would of gotten me a horse when I was old enough. I would of bought a place that had a lot of acreage and a barn. I wouldn't care if the house was a fixer upper either. I would of been so happy for the rest of my life. Unfortunately it is too late for that to happen. I am still looking for a house with acreage and at least some sort of outer building. I would maybe be able to become a foster mom/rescue shelter for animals. I know that sounds like just a dream, but if there is any way that I can do that I will. Only time will tell.

Hope everyone can enjoy their day.

Best wishes to all!

I own a beautiful dark bay Arabian mare. Her name is Sheba and is just a .sweet horse. When I got her, I was looking for a paint or quarter horse. I never even wanted an Arabian because I had heard so many negative things about the breed.. I fell in love with her instantly and we bonded instantly.

Happy Trails

Hello All,

Congtulations on the success story. I am so happy that things finally worked out for you and him. He sounds like a wonderful horse and hope that he is perfect when you decide to get on him.

I unfortunately do not own any horses, but I love them so much. Things just never worked out so that I could buy one. Now it is too late. With all my health issues I wouldn't be able to do a lot of things with him/her. Sometimes I think that I could still get one but not ride it, but that wouldn't be fair to the horse. I would give it a really good home and it would get so spoiled. I guess it just isn't meant to be.

Hope that everything works out ok with you and him. Best wishes.

Hope everyone can enjoy their day.

Best wishes to all!

Hi!
My fur-baby is a 17h Standardbred, he is 5 1/2 yrs old and not started yet.

I purchased him at an auction when he was about 6 months old along with his 1/2 sister (they were identical!) We named them Dakota and Kahlua. We couldn't get near Dakota - he would always hide behind Kahlua.

Dakota got pneumonia about a month after I bought him. I think that's when our bonding started - I would sit down with him in his stall to feed him his grain and meds, making sure he got it all. I would sit there and gently rub his head, his ears, and he was too sick to move away from me.

About a year later, he fractured his hawk -- stall rest for 5 months! that was brutal. I went to the barn every day to wrap his leg with an electromagnetic boot. The vet finally gave him a clean bill of health and he was allowed in the round pen for an hour a day, working our way up to going out with the others after a couple of months. That day was AMAZING!

Because of the vet bills, I had to give up Kahlua - the owner where we were boarding bought her. She has a good home, she drives and rides!

And 3 years ago, I finally made my dream come true - I bought a house in the country, 4 acres, fenced off 3, built a lean-to and brought Dakota home! a month later, we adopted a 15 year-old mare (QH) who was looking for a new home. She's now my daughter's horse, and Dakota's "girlfriend" :)

Gone are the days of "catch me if you can". He's like my very large dog. He follows me everywhere! he is SO curious! and is afraid of very little. I cannot imagine life without him. I trust him completely and I know that when I sit on him for the first time, he will be perfect!

I know people who have horses, who wouldn't think twice of selling them for a better horse. To me, there is nothing better than my horse!

Hi everyone - thrilled to have found this thread/forum. I do not own horses at this time - but am 3rd generation in my family that has earned a living from the horse industry. I have had the most dealings with American Saddlebreds, Morgan, Shetland, Hackney, Arabian, Half Arabians and National Show Horses. Also really involved over the years in 4-H as a member, leader and 4-H mom. Mostly involved in english (Hunt seat/flat, 4-H, saddleseat, fine harness and roadster. Always looking for friends - especially from the horsey set!

Welcome, Jerome and Angel! It is interesting that you both have such a kind and emotional connection with horses, take it slow. It's wonderful that those neglected horses have found such wonderful humans to help them along. I'm sure the payback is high.

Hi

I have been a member of sparkpeople for some time but have only recently revisited my passion for horses! I have recently rescued a Clydesdale (Yes Thats correct!) and (yup that too) a Quarter horse!

Both need retraining quite a bit -Sydney (quarter horse) is an ex broodmare with a stubborn streak (alpha horse) and Seren, who has had little human interaction and doesnt appear to have been trained to the bit.....

In just three months we have made ground work with both horses, and this has encouraged me somewhat in my journey to lose weight... Isnt Confidence amazing?? Also being around the horses seems to give me a sense of peace and calmness that I am not able to gain anywhere else......

I RESCUED A 3 YR OLD PASO FINO GELDING, HE IS WHITE WITH A BLACK MANE AND TAIL, ( MY HUBBY MAY BE MY MAIN SQUEEZE, BUT HIS GUYS IS MY LITTLE LOVE!!!) :) HE WAS ABUSED WHEN HE WAS YOUNG, AND THEN PUT OUT TO PASTURE WITH LITTLE OR NO CONTACT WITH ANYTHING ON TWO LEGS FOR THREE YEARS, THE STABLE I GOT HIM FROM WORKED HIM A BIT, BUT I THINK IT WAS BY FORCE, BECAUSE IT TOOK ME THREE WEEKS JUST TO GET A HALTER ON HIM!!! BUT NOW, HE IS SUCH A LITTLE LOVER, AND LOVES TO CUDDLE UP CLOSE AND PRESS HIS HEAD INTO ME AS I RUB HIM!! I HAVE HAD A HAVE TRAINED AND RIDDEN ALL MY LIFE-HORSES AND RIDERS, BUT IT HAS BEEN AWHILE. IT WILL BE SLOW GOING WITH HIM AND I AM COMPLETELY HAPPY ABOUT THAT BECAUSE HE NEEDS THAT- PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING AND SINCE HE WAS BASICALLY WILD WHEN I GOT HIM, NOW THAT I CAN LUNGE HIM AND LEAD HIM IS AMAZING- I HAVE ALSO RESCUED 2 BUNNIES AND 5 KITTIES, AND LOVE ANIMALS DEARLY- I WILL DEF RESCUE ANOTHER HORSE AS SOON AS HE GETS SADDLE TRAINED- BUT WE ARE IN NO RUSH- SOMETIMES WE JUST STAND THERE TOGETHER AND HUG EACH OTHER- AND IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FEELING IN THE WORLD!!! Thanks, Jennie, I appreciate your words of support and comfort. I gave Trigger a bath yesterday, with the help of my sister. We think he might have a tooth issue, because he seemed pretty sensitive on his left side of his cheek. I am going to call the vet to check his teeth this week.

Lindy, I am so sorry for the loss of your grandchild and your daughter's baby girl. How devastating. I pray that you will make it through this. God will give you strength, I trust.

I am glad that you have Trigger to focus on, although I'm sure you're somewhat distracted, understandably. Great time of year to start working with him though.

Trigger is my new APHA Palomino gelding. I bought him on March 1, and he turned 4 on March 3. March has been a month of extreme highs and lows. I thought it was starting out to be the best month of the year for me, when I got him. But I was wrong. On March 10, my darling daughter lost her baby girl....stillborn...she was due to be born on March 25, so only two weeks away from her due date. We were devastated. My husband pulled me away for a 5 day surprise trip to California for my birthday..he had been planning it for months, and he had even upped it a couple weeks because the baby was due on the 25th, and I was NOT going to leave town then. I think that 5 day respite was the only real bright spot of the month, though Trigger is close. When I got Trigger, he was at least 150 pounds underweight...the girl who owned him before had told me that she kept him that way because he got too aggressive otherwise. My sis and I immediately set to getting him to gain weight. He has now gained about 75 pounds, I think, and he is looking great. Sure enough, he is getting sassy...but we think it is because he is 4, finally has enough energy...and needs to be started all over again. We are using natural horsemanship with leadership and respect. However, we are not through with the grief process on losing a much awaited grandchild. And we had another loss to our family yesterday, a loving aunt who died on my birthday. We are holding onto Jesus for strength. I am going out to the barn each day now to spend time with Trigger, but I am not feeling particularly successful at the moment.

Hi, I'm new to this team! My husband and I run a boarding stable. We have three horse of our own--a 19 year old bay Quarter Horse gelding, a 3 year old strawberry roan Mustang gelding, and my husband has a 23 year old bay Oldenburg gelding. The Mustang is my baby! I'm training him with natural horsemanship techniques, and the big goal is to eventually ride him bareback and bridleless! He's a good boy... very safe for a 3 yo!

Thank you so much. Yes that is great news about duke and i have some as well. My walker was sick with a touch of colic two weeks ago. But three days ago he made a full recovery. It made me realize how important he is to me. He was to be my husbands ride while mine is the paso but after the scare i know he is truly mine as well. Hes the type of horse you cant help but adore. Very gentle unless your another horse named chance! He loves to bully him and its comical. He has such a split personality.

My horse, Duke, is a paint. He stepped on a nail December 5th and we called the vet right away. On December 14th, they told us the abscess had developed in the soft tissue and we should put him down. His chance of living, even with surgery was only 50%.

We had the surgery done on his hoof to allow the infection to drain out of his body instead of running through it. This has been a nightmare, but here it is Feb 14th and Duke is still with us. He still has a way to go, but has been off all medication for over two weeks and is walking 30 minutes per day. Quite an improvement. His playful personality is back and I am just so hopeful that this is going to work. emoticon

Love reading about all the different horses!

We've got 9 total, most of them are Quarter Horses. But I do have a BS Paint, Polish Arab, and an Arab cross with something gaited.

Hi, My name is Debi and I'm new to this group. I hope it's an active one as I need a lot of motivation!! I've owned horses all of my life. Now I have a QH mare and two mini's. I'm looking for a great trail horse. My goal is to ride in the Michigan Shore-to-Shore fall ride from Mackinac City to Oscoda. A 10 day ride at approx 25 miles per day. It's a huge goal and I want to be as fit as possible to give me and my horse the opportunity for success. I look forward to chatting with all of you!

New member here, I am Jan and I own a mixed herd of horses. I have four rescue horses: one Arabian, one Paint, one Appaloosa and one Quarter Horse. I also have a Quarter Horse mare and her foal which is a Quarter Horse/Paint cross. Currently have a Thoroughbred boarder, too!

Hi...I am Cynthia..My ponies are Welsh/Morgan crosses, bay...one red bay, one gold bay..Bright has a beautifull, symetrical star which narrows down his arab type face, Captain has a slightly asymetrical stripe running down his longer, straighter noble profile. They are full brothers. My Shetland and Mini are gelding and filly..both red bays..solid. They are my reason for getting up in the morning.
