Hi, Joanna and Dot - good to hear from you. I don't know about this forum, no one seems to update much at all lately. It's sad!

Pi's leg has mostly healed up, we are riding quite a bit. I got thru that sciatica thing, but I could feel it a bit yesterday and this morning, so I'm nervous about that. I am going to try and blame it on carrying a table at church Saturday evening, and not the riding.

I will be traveling Tues-Fri, so I won't be riding and maybe it will calm down. I'll try some of the ibuprofen again.

We've been trying all kinds of bits on Pi for when jumping. In dressage riding, he is pretty good with a jointed loose-ring snaffle, and of course the noseband (he loves to open his mouth). He is really muscling up in his neck and body, and starting to look quite good. Also, I got him a massage last week and that really helped him (at least for a few days, lol).

When jumping, he gets excited and wants to go, and it can be very difficult to "rein him in" (I guess that's where the expression comes from!). We finally went back to the original bit his owner was riding him in, a happy mouth snaffle but with elevator rings. Lots of leverage! Faye rode him in it Sunday and he was jumping around quite quietly, with good rhythm. I hope it stays that way. We'll have to use a pelham for shows, so will have to try that one of these days. Faye is not used to double reins, and it's been years for me, so I suppose we shouldn't wait too long.

Everyone, please check this thread and let us know what you're up to! Check in!

Hello All,

I am so sorry for not coming on in a long time. I was having a hard time typing after my thumb surgery. My thumb is getting better gradually. It will take a little time and I have to make sure that I don't try to over use it. If I do that it hurts really bad, so I have to be careful.

I too haven't been sleeping very well either. I have only been getting anywhere's from 3 to 4 hours a night. My doctor told me to take half of my sleeping pill after I wake up. That way it will help me to get back to sleep. If I wake up close to the beginning of daylight then I shouldn't take it because it would interfere with my daily awake hours. I tried it the first night, I woke up at 1:00 am so I took the half of the sleeping pill. laid back down and finely got to go back to sleep. Before I knew it I was awake again at 4 am. So I guess that didn't work very well. I will just have to keep trying to get as much sleep as I can.

Our temps today is only 22. It is going to get colder tonight. It is suppose to go down to 10 tonight. We are suppose to be getting some snow on Monday night into Tuesday. I am hoping that we don't get a lot. I am totally done with this snow. Our yard is just about bare and all the snow is going away. I want it to stay that way.

Hope everyone is doing ok. Hope that no one is sick.

Hope everyone can enjoy their day.

Best wishes to all!

I will keep you all in my Thoughts and Prayers

It’s been awhile since I have been on and active in the team chat. I have missed many of you. I would say all of you but there are new people and that would be me telling a fib…not knowing them at all. I am sure there is much to read up on and see how everyone is doing. I did put up a little blog with an update. Things are getting better and allowing me some time so I might be tempted to get back on at a regular basis.

I bought a horse yesterday! I am pretty excited. He is a palomino, and is considered a registered Paint, but my sis and I, after looking at his bloodlines, are going to try to get him double registered as a Quarterhorse, too. He has no white splotches on him.
He turns 4 tomorrow. The previous owners called him Trigger, probably in reference to the fact that he is a beautiful palomino, but his real name is Rock the Choc
I am going to start fresh with him using the Parelli method. My goal this week is to get him used to me, and to start to trust me, and to play with him! We are doing groundwork only for awhile.

The year 2013 is my year for tracking; tracking food, tracking movement, tracking feelings, tracking thoughts. I am a work in progress, I do not have to be perfect.

Hello All,

I hope that all the horses are doing ok. I hope that all their owners are too.

I am sorry for the long time of not posting. I just went back to the doctor yesterday. He says that it is looking good and that I only need two more weeks in the cast. After that I can start therapy. I have put up another blog explaining everything a lot more details. It is called Dot's Updates.

Hope all is well with you all. I say prayers everyday for all of you. I hope that you all are doing ok. I am still just typing with one hand, anfd that one hurts as well.

Hope everyone can enjoy their day

Best wishes to all!

Wanted to let you all know that I saw the PT guy yesterday, and I have been virtually pain-free from that sciatica for 3-4 days (was still taking the ibuprofen to complete the two weeks). He did a few tests/stretches, and no pain and indicating that my abs are strong, and no issues with hamstrings or glutes being tight. He said my abs are much stronger than most people my age, which explains why I rebounded so quickly. Yay! He attributed much of that to riding. I had been doing ab-strengthening for a few months since my fall last March, but had slacked off by end of summer. So, he recommended just a knee to chest stretch, and doing the plank once a day. And start riding! So I did last night, and still no pain this morning. Hallelujah!

How is everyone?

I wanted to let everyone know that I am going to back away from Sparkpeople for a while. I just have so much on my plate that I can’t seem to find the time to be on here as often as it is required. I wish I had another route to take but I need to eliminate a few things so that I can catch up and stay on top of a few others. I wish you all the best and for some of you I will miss dearly for I think I have found some really good friends along my journey. If I can find a balance or have time I will make my way back, until then have a wonderful life and may all your goals be met in 2013.

It’s all about having a good fun right. Anyway the newest thing in my life is that I just read my first novel in over 10 years……I don’t know why but how it all came about is that Nook Book stuff. I bought my sister a Nook Book for her Birthday last year….and while showing her how to set it up I opened my own account with Barns and Noble. Well the grandson that was an avid reader gave up his reading for a while also to I guess hand out with girls and his friends. I was quite set back with that but what can you do…you can’t force him to read when I myself had given it up years before. He also dropped his computer and the screen cracked so he was left with just his friends and his Games. He was just getting over the flu and with cold weather coming in….he is not all that apt to going out after a long day in the barn…..so his old habit of curling up with a book came back and he got into his collection to re-read a couple of them. He popped in a couple of weeks ago and asked me to buy him a new book….actually two of them…sequels to ones he had already. Being not in the best of moods I didn’t want to go out….he decided I could just get on line and buy his books from BN and he would read them on either my computer or my ipad. I have not bought him a NOOK or anything like that as of yet. Well I gave in and bought the two…nook books….and he opened up my ipad and read them…both with three days time. There is another book coming out which he talked me into buying but it will not be available until April….so while on there looking around I decided to pick up a few more nook books for him. I bought Beautiful Creatures and all the sequels that go with it giving him something to read while waiting on his book of choice. There out of nowhere popped another book that caught my eye FREE of charge…...since I just spent over 100.00 on books I was surprised I would find a free one that was not a bio or something of a waste of time. I read the PROLOG and decided to download it also.

After I finished working that night….I had a few minutes to cool down before trying to lie down so I decided to bring out that FREE book I found on B&N….. I opened it on my work IPAD since the boy had my play one….and I began to read. I read 3 pages and fell off to sleep thinking it was going to be boring. I did not pick it up again until yesterday when I took it with me on a outing to take my daughter to the doctors. While she was in the doctor’s office I decided to wait in the truck and open the ipad…. I began to read….and wow…it caught me on the very first page I opened…#4…. I sat there in the parking lot and read over 300 pages…while waiting on her. When she showed up I was kind of disappointed that she didn’t take longer….I was really into it. I did a check and realized I downloaded a book that had over 1000 pages…..OMG I said to myself “When am I going to get the time to read this”? I’ll tell you when…when I got home I sat right down on my sofa in the front room I never let anyone sit in and I opened that Ipad and did not close it until I was down…it took another five hours. I could not believe how long it took me and more so that I did it. I have not read like that in ages…and I missed it. I really missed it…so I think I am going to have to put some time back aside to get in some reading. I am not one to read while sitting there on a cycle trying to exercise….or at a table while everyone is around….I need quiet and solitude in order to read….because I do it at such a great speed I have to be able to comprehend it while I read it.

Anyway I just wanted to say I truly enjoyed it. Today it’s snowing heavily and a cold front came in from the west. Temps are dropping down to the single digits and with wind chill factors we are in for some cold weather….even the horses I see are all out standing there just watching no playing around at all.
I am back in physical therapy for the next few weeks…so my oldest daughter decided to help me along and she joined the wellness centers club where I do my physical therapy and that way she will be driving me and getting to work out while I am there too. She likes the warm water pool and the track they offer. I didn’t realize you could hold a membership without doing the physical therapy there at the hospital but you can. My son left and went back home…there goes my home cooking. I will miss him but it was time for him to go.

Let’s see if I can slip in here and pick up somewhere.

Jennie, things are what they are...we can't always get exactly what we ordered so I am just going with the flow right now, but I do seem to be getting back into the gust of things pretty quickly. Good to hear that you are doing better...PT will always help in the long run...I get tossed back into that more often than I would like to but in the end it seems to get me a step forward.

Have a great day...everyone

Joanna, you did fall off, but apparently crawled your way back on! It sounds like all the unusual activities are coming to a close, so I hope you can get back in the swing of things. I truly hope all members of your family are healing and able to help with everything shortly.

My sciatica issue is lessening in intensity - I will be a week on the ibuprofen and with taking it easy tomorrow. Then one more week and go to PT, so I hope it has really lessened so that I can do some exercises.

Hope everyone is staying warm. Dangerous wind chills here today and tomorrow, and storm coming in Thursday. We could use the snow but I know several areas around here have seen lots of accidents with the blowing snow and low visibility. Take are.

Oh my gosh I feel like I fell off the ends of the earth it’s been a while since I have been on. One thing after the other has come up keeping me either working or away. I have had no time for the computer or even to get into any emails. I opened the email and I had at least 12 to 14 days behind on Spark mails….and when you get so many in one day…well you can just imagine to mess and trying to catch up on everything would have been impossible so I ended up deleting all the older ones that were with articles and such. Just too much to read and try to reply to all the blogging etc.

That flu bug has hit just about everyone in the family and might be coming around for seconds. We had company in for the funeral which caused me to have to play host to. We had a couple of downfalls with the horses and this winter issues. Frozen water buckets, the crazy things are playing with the cords and taking them out of the wall and this allows their buckets to freeze. Trying to un-break the water or melt it has caused a few causalities also. Broken buckets cost up to 70 dollars each to replace. My daughter took a good fall a couple of weeks ago and in the end it caused her to go to the hospital and have minor surgery. She had broken bone that had to be removed. She spent 4 days in the hospital and then I had to help take care of her once she was home. So I had her come here to my house since I already had visitors from out of town here.

The hubby was down with the flu and in bed for three days straight…so we had to find a way to pick up his work slack…which is not easy in the winter. I had to fight with him to get him to the doctor and on meds. I ran my poor granddaughter ragged and now…of all things she is down with the flu and out of commission.

The funeral for my mother in law is over, the visitors went home on the 14th, my daughter went home today, my hubby is back in commission but not all up to par. I haven’t been working so I am behind at work and of course I am out of two pay checks…no work no pay. What can I expect? Well this is what I can expect….my daughter was not able to work so of course she had to borrow money from MOM. My sister gave me a call and ask me to loan her money….of course I did not say no. The hubby had no insurance and taking him to the doctor ran us a good chunk of change counting up the prescriptions she gave him. Without him cutting wood for the fireplaces……I had to turn up the heat…and its electric not gas so that hit me up…with a 1700.00 Electric bill for last month…..between the house and barn…we get hit up big time. I really need to get my head out of my butt and back on the ground working. Hehehe! It’s not all that bad, but two or three months like this could really put the hurt on us.

So please forgive me for not knowing what is going on or keeping up with you all here. I really enjoy when I get the chance to chat with one or more on here, but lately it has not been going my way. And burrrrrrr it’s cold outside tonight. But, I smell the wood coming from the lower fire and the house is nice and toasty warm right now. I hope you are all smiling from your valentine’s day that just passed and you were able to enjoy it.

Hello All,

Happy Valentines Day to you all.

I am doing a little better. Today the pain is better. I just hope that it stays that way.

I have put up a blog, titled "Dot's Hand Progress". If you have the time you can find out what is happening with me.

I am still typing with one hand so that is why I can not answer the posts for right now. I am hoping soon that I will be able to come back on full time.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Best wishes to everyone

Best wishes to all!

I will keep you all in my Thoughts and Prayers

Aagh - yesterday it took about 10 minutes, and then this morning it took me over 30 minutes to get out of bed and be able to walk around almost normally. Horrible pain trying to stand up and walk, or even stand up tall. There is definitely a sciatica thing going on. I made an appt. to see the doctor later this afternoon. I now realize that for several months I have been somewhat stiff and sore in that left hip area and thigh, but until it started zapping all the way down to my foot yesterday morning, I didn't recognize it as such. I did have that fall off my horse in March, and got 1 new compression fracture in my spine (upper/thoracic and mid/lumbar), and 1 older one was slightly worse (as noted from a previous x-ray) and a 3rd hadn't changed since a car accident in 2001. So, I think all this is adding up to now pressure on that sciatic nerve. I did read up about it this morning, and it appears that a lot of sciatic pain can go away in about 6 weeks with some treatments including ice, then heat and also exercise. Acupuncture and chiropractic may help, so I will think about those if it's indicated. I've had success with acupuncture years ago for migraines and allergies, but I haven't really cared for chiropractic adjustments. I have ostopenia (precursor to osteoporosis) and worry about a chiro doing more damage than good!

For a while when I was recuperating from the fall in March, I was being very careful about the jarring of sitting trot or canter, and I do wonder if that is having an impact as well. I definitely feel it differently than I used to. I really don't want to not ride!

Getting old sucks!

Thanks, Dot - I went to your blog to comment. Thanks for posting here!

We are trying to figure out the best bit for Pi. He has a tough mouth, and doesn't like to bend or truly get on contact (prefers leaning on it), so that is a lot of work for me, to really use my leg more than my hand, but I can keep working through it. It's tougher for my daughter, who doesn't have a lot of finesse or experience with this. But she is still enjoying riding him. Next one we will try is a Myler (think it's stage 2) with a small port. My trainer wonders if he doesn't like tongue pressure.

His wound is slowly healing.

I helped out at the barn Sunday morning as my daughter had to work and the other girl was sick. Cleaned many stalls, trudged to the manure pile through the icy driveway and turned out/brought in horses, helped feed, sweep, etc. 4 hours of exercise! I would ALMOST do this on a regular basis, but at age 59, I deserve to be able to sleep in when I want to!

Hello All,

I would just like to let everyone know that I have had my surgery on Friday and am home trying to get through the pain.

I have put up a blog titled, "Dot's Hand Surgery" to let you all know how things are going. I am only going to be able to type a little with just one hand available. I have to be careful with this one too because it also has the same problem and chances are that I am going to have the same surgery on it as well.

Best wishes to all.

Hope you all have a great day.

Best wishes to all!

Joanna, that's good news on your BP.

I am glad you made it through the funeral, and that your family really stepped up to help. Those services can really help with closure, I'm glad it appears that way with your husband. So, I hope a few days of rest now so that you can get back to your normal mode. I'm sure you have projects lined up between here and the first shows!

Pi is doing better - when I rode on Wednesday, I saw that the outer edges of his wound now appear to be nice, smooth, pink skin. So, the healing seems to be coming along, can't wait for it to fill in and then get hair!

Well I went to the Dr...yesterday morning...BP was 117/80 so they say very good. Back on my meds...trying to get through this ordeal...she said I has ear infections along with a nose infection so she put me on antibiotics. Prescribed an inhaler and had me buy mucus medication over the counter. I have to confess I do feel a little better today, but I barely made it through the funeral...I was so week it was hard to stand.

My daughter bless her heart....took up my place and played hostess for our side of the family during last couple of days. I was so sick yesterday after seeing the doctor I came home took a shower to leave for the funeral home and passed out on the bed. I did not make it for the family gathering or the first showing. Domenica was there and she stood by her father and mingled and met everyone that came in and offered condolences. I did manage to get dressed and make it to the second showing from 6 to 8 however I was still too weak to do too much. I did make it around for a while. The hubby belongs to bike club and over 75 of them showed up that evening....I had to say hi to the older ones that all knew me, and the hubby introduced me to a few of the younger members. I had them laughing a little here and there so I guess it went rather well. I managed to get around to the family that was still there, but I just could not stand up for long periods of time.

Today during the ceremony my husband broke down a few times so I had to get up and stand by him...whispering to him that he could do this...and keep my arm around his waist for him to make his speech, but he did it and it was truly a nice speech not written at all. It all came from the heart. Now that he has put her to rest I think he will be fine. She is gone but not forgotten.

Tonight I am feeling a little better...so I hope the medication the doctor gave me....will get me out of this slump I am in and back on track so I can get back to taking care of things around here. I want to thank all of you for the nice wishes you sent me and all the private notes...they were taken to heart with much gratitude. I hope you are all doing well and I promise to read everything over the next couple of days to catch up to speed.

God Bless
Joanna

Dot - tks for the information, it sounds like the surgery should go well, and give you some relief! You'll be in my prayers.

Joanna, I think the funeral services were either yesterday or today. I hope things are going okay and that you are feeling a bit better yourself, as well as your family who has had too many calamities lately! The only good thing about funerals is it does bring everyone together, so I hope you can enjoy that part.

I get to ride tonight. Pi is still healing, but it seems to me the proud flesh is growing on that wound even though it was stitched up tight at first. My trainer says that the wound heals from inside and so "pushes" all that stuff to the outside. If anyone has experience with proud flesh, let me know. I really would not like him to have such a visible scar. We are primarily keeping it moist with saline solution cleaning and aloe cream.

Hello All,

Hope everyone is doing ok.

At 7 am we are at 14. It was a nice day yesterday even though it only stayed in the 20's. The weatherman is still saying that we are going to be getting a big snow event on Friday. It sounds though that it might start in the afternoon, which would be ok providing that I go to the hospital in the morning. Thank you for the prayers, I really do appreciate them all.

I got some of my questions answered yesterday when I went and saw the surgeon. The bone that he is taking out is a real small bone that is in the meaty part of your lower thumb joint. You can't feel it. The tendon that he is going to use to fill the space is one that is already there. He won't have to make any more incisions. I will have a incision from the middle-bottom part of the inside of my hand going towards the meaty part of the thumb. It will be able an inch and a half to two inches long. I will be bandaged up for about 2 weeks and then I go and have a brace put on. I will have to wear it for 6 weeks. I will be able to move it around some, but not too much. As it heals better I can move it more. I have heard from about 2 people that have had this surgery done and have had great results. I will be happy to be pain free in that part.

Hope everyone stay's warm, safe, and healthy.

Best wishes to all!

Hello All,

I am so sorry to hear about your Mother-In-Law. It is really hard when you lose a parent. I can understand how your husband is feeling. It is good too that he is crying some. It isn't good to keep any of his feelings in. The presentation that you are putting together for a slideshow, sounds really nice. What a great idea. What better way to let everyone know how she was. I really hope that you will feel better so you can get to the funeral too. I know you have that awful cold that you need to get some antibiotics for soon. I will say some prayers that the whole family will be ok. I really hope that you feel better. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hope that everyone can enjoy their day.

Best wishes to all!

Joanna, I am so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. Your granddaughter - how empathetic! What a sweetheart, as you say. There are not many 12 year olds who could make the call that she did. It sounds like she has many good role models in her family.

You are so strong, can't believe you are going with the flu that you have. It's good that you will check with the dr. to see the best course of action with regards to attending the services. It sounds to me like you need 24-72 hours of rest, but doesn't appear that's likely, but just remember that it will catch up with you eventually. Better to take care of it as soon as you can, it's just inevitable. Your family is in my prayers, and particularly your husband and his siblings.

My mother in law just passed away...we are going through a hard time right now. For those of you that are interested you can visit her Book of Memories and offer condolences on the following link. She lived a long happy life up until the very end. http://www.keehnfuneralhome.com/book-of-me
mories/1483463/Goodall-Caroline/servic
e-details.php

You know it doesn't make sense, as sick as I am I still find strength when push comes to shove. I could barely breath without hacking up phylum yet I managed to sit up all night going through hundreds of photos (old family ones...of my mother in law and her family) ...scanning them first to my computer, then editing them, fixing them up and resizing them, to put them into a power point presentation for the funeral home on Tuesday and Wednesday. I have take her life and put it on screen now and hopefully will be there to see it through. If not my son said he can set up the equipment so it can be viewed on a big screen TV.

The Funeral Home listed her passing but forgot to put in any type of Obituary...just her date and name. I just sat with my husband as he was crying and tried all I could to get it started. It is a sharing process. I took a few of the photos I edited and added them to the site to show others they also can add their photos to share. I sat as edited my hubbys memorial as he wanted to light her a candle. He kept choking up trying to come up with something to say. It took a while I didn't want to put any words in his mouth for him. When I finished he called his sister...she began to cry...now she wants me to show her how to do it also....so she can add a few pictures. It's kind of click and edit, but if you are not computer savvy I guess it might not seem easy.

The hubby left to the airport to pick up one of his two brothers...that is coming in. The other will be here early in the morning. I fear it is going to be a busy week for me if I like it or not. My hubby is not really in shape to handle this on his own. He would like to think he can but it seems like he needs my support just to help him keep from crying all the time. We knew it was coming, but it is still hard.

Now for anything funny or good going on with me....nope not that the moment, so I guess I will call it a night and see if a hot shower will knock some of this congestion out of me. I have an appointment tomorrow at noon 100 miles away with the doctor that did the surgery on me...a checkup. I called on Saturday to get my coats out of storage since I don't have a dress coat here that is suitable for a funeral in winter. I will stop by and pick them up on my way back on Monday since I will be coming through that city to get back home. Black slacks and a black top will have to do I do not have a black dress for winter. I sent all the boys suits to the cleaners....to make sure they were clean. Will be able to pick them up on Tuesday which in now only the showing, but I have an early morning Dr. Apt that I have been waiting for. I can't miss that one because I need her to give me some meds for this flu. I am also going to ask her if she advises me not to attend....I don't want to make anyone sick but I have been down with it for a week now and you only carry it I hear for so long. I would hate to miss the whole funeral and layout but I cannot afford to spread this to anyone else. My grand-daughter and daughter will be right there with the hubby if I am not so he will have support that will not leave his side. I had my grandson come out and take one of the cars in storage and give it a good wipe down. It's a 1923 RR Springfield Silver Ghost that the hubby restored years ago. His mother loved to ride around in it...so we thought we would use it for her funeral. It's a personal thing with him. I was quite surprised that he would take it out during the winter months but I guess this is one of the better times to use it

Hello...just checking in. This is the first of three days off and I did a bit of Spring cleaning and intend on driving my mini, Lady tommorrow. All of them got a chance to stretch their legs good and get some sunshine. With the construction on the arena...part 3...I can't turn them out in the barnyard which cramps their style. There is string measured just so out there and one of the many would delight in removing it...if they didn't just tromple through...so we wait. There is a new cart being shipped from Florida so I moved the larger 4 wheeled carriage to the carport and will eventually put its custom cover on...after I get 5 layers of dirt off. A lady and her family are supposed to coming out to look at young ewes for a March purchase any time now so I am holding off feeding the flock so they can get a good look....However, I may go ahead and feed the ponies who are not so patient.
Joanna, hope you get over your ailment soon and condolances on your mother in law. Jennifer, hope Pi's legs are doing better and the weather co operates soon.
I am really looking forward to having the time to pay more attention to my ponies this long weekend...esp since I did the chores today.

Dot, she started showing horses at 4 and just turned 26 in September. I have a little granddaughter right behind her...that started in leadline at 18mo and just turned 12. Not quite the same natural ability at the first one but she tries her best and does quite well. Neither one of them can live without the horses.

I'll tell you when it rains it pours...I am sick as a dog....really and I can handle pain in a high tolerance dose. This is not painful just draining all my energy. My coughing has caused every upper muscle and bone I have in my chest to ache. I am trying not to cough and it just keeps coming. One side of my nose is running and I can't get it to stop so it is red and raw. The other side is stuffed with a sinus infection. My legs hurt to pick them up and put them down. On top of that my mother in law died early this morning. The hubby got a call that her body functions where shutting down and they should come if he wanted to be there at the last. So he went about 3 yesterday afternoon. She moved a bit but never woke up....finally went at 4:40 this morning. Now he is out with his older sister making funeral arrangements. He has 2 brothers coming in from California and Texas for the funeral. The hubby of course offered our house for the visit. All other family members are here in the state that I know of.

My daughter's birthday is tomorrow so I hate to have her come and clean on her BD, but she did offer to put in a few hours mid-day if I can't get the boys here to do everything right. Both my son and grandson are recovering from this flu and are not up to par, but hey they will have to step up and at least help me out inside today.....before the guest arrive tomorrow.

His sister who was the major care giver wants a one day layout and the funeral the next day. If that happens the funeral will be on Tuesday and I have a major Dr. APT at 10:am With this flu I can't miss it...I need to be put on antibiotics. I hate to have the hubby go to the funeral alone without me. My little granddaughter called me this morning speaking so quietly asking if I heard about grandma Goodall? I said yes she said I am so sorry for grandpa is he there by you...I said he is but sleeping. She said can you tell him I'm sorry. I said yes honey it's ok she was old and it was her time, she went on to say I know grandma but it still hurts a everyone if something happens to their mom. Grandpa is going to be really sad for a while so if he yells or gets mad...don't you ok. I said ok honey thank you for the advice. She said it's ok...I'll see you at the funeral home. We hung up!

Bless the children with sweethearts.

Joanna

Hello All,

Thank you Joanna for the well wishes and prayers.

It sounds like you have your hands full. The horses sound really good too. Your grand-daughter sounds very devoted to her horses. It sounds like she knows what she wants. How old is she, if you don't mind? It must be very fun to show horses and what you get back from it must be great.

Thank you all for the well wishes and prayers.

Our weather is so crazy. Today we are in the 50's with very, very high winds. They are blowing so bad that we might lose power. I am hoping not. Tonight we are going to start going back into the freezing numbers. I guess that we are going to be getting some snow too.

Best wishes to you all.

Hope everyone can enjoy their day.

Best wishes to all!

Jennie, that's wonderful I hope he does everything you desire. It's great when you have a horse capable of competition. We breed from time to time and as much as the horses turn out beautiful and can do so much they are not exactly what we are looking for. My grand-daughter loves Saddleseat...but doesn't like the Saddlebred competition...she shows Arabians...and that high stepping Arabian is always her horse of choice. We have had some very nice ones along he way but some have been touch and go. We have an awesome Pinto Mare National Show Horse....excels in the head set and the upright frame, but just doesn't have the lift...and we don't use enhancers if they don't show a natural ability. The horse is a beauty......but we had to drop her down to hunter/jumper on the flat. There are not many courses in Michigan that offer jumping for Arabians. Right now she is in the process of training a young warm blood we purchased as a 4 month old...now going on three. He is doing well over the jumps and this will be our first year trying out the Class A jumping division. We will start him at a couple of small shows just to see how he does, then move him up quickly so she can get into cross county eventing. She is so excited about him, but then we have a 17 hh three year old Arabian she is breaking....for Western of course...no lift in that knee but wonderful mover. Once they are shown a year or two we hand them down to my youngest grand-daughter that is coming up behind Alexandra. Not to mention she just went out and bought herself another huge half Arabian...to try to get ready for Saddleseat...or PARK classes.

We break the horses starting in dressage, but because it's not of an interest to us...we over ride it in what we call High School Dressage...we teach...the passage...side tracking, leg and shoulder yields, shoulders, haunches, and the basics...lots of bending and collecting then of course the tricks....but very soon go onto something else. All of our horses know how to presage...bow, and rear on command. Above that...we are deaf to dressage....its takes too long and the girls get to bored. I'm an old school trainer...and they keep coming out with new techniques all the time. I stick to my old ways...then turned them over to the younger girls to finish off...but now I have to rely on the girls to do it all. She's (Alexandra) is pretty good at it through.....she holds quite a few national championships...a couple of world ones...and she went to the Olympics in 2000 at the age of 13. So of course she no longer wants to listen to anything I have to say anyway. Right down to the feeding she keeps control of everything. The only time I get called in is when there is a sick horse, an accident, or one has to be put down. She hasn't mastered that part yet. Oh yeah and I am the fill in when she can't make it...I give lesson to her students from time to time.

Dot, you are so right...I am having my hands full right now but they are getting better and for some reason I think I am getting worse. My lungs are all congested today and I am coughing up flem . It's been raining here for two days...so me going in and out of the barn has not been great on me. I think we are all experiencing strange weather a little more each year...but then that is to be expected as we are hollowing the earth and its off its axle. How in the world can you keep up with 13 teams...no wonder you can't find time..I have 4 and it's a full time job if I want to do it right. Good luck on your surgery and I will look forward to reading your blogs for a while.

Cam, don't think that weather won't hit you...the coastal lines have been getting it pretty hard from one side of the country to the other...and snow in Vegas...that's what I call strange. But, glad you are still able to enjoy it and have the time to spend with you horses.

Talk to you all soon.

Wow...y'all are a busy bunch...just stopping in before running some errands and getting a tire fixed...windy and cool out this way. I cringe at the thought of ice and frozen buckets...et..I just fill up the troughs between cold spells...I wonder if my Shetland who hails from the frozen north messes with water troughs and buckets...sticks his legs in because of past history with frozen water...of course he does it when it is hot outside too.
I am so sorry for all the weather and catastrophe related mishaps...will need to pray harder for y'all...obviously.
Here is sending you all warm thoughts.

Hello All,

Right now we are experiencing rain as well. We had some snow the day before. Not much though. This weather is really strange this year. The months seem to be going by fast too.

Jeanne, I hope that you will be able to do ok. I am glad that the horses foot is doing better. Keep up the good work.

Joanna, what a time you have been having. I hope that things will start to quiet down for you soon. Hope that the hubby and boys feel better soon.

After a lot of thinking that for my surgery when I come back on I will just do some blogs because I have a lot of teams (13). It will be too hard for me too go to each team and post. I am hoping that you will all be able to find me so you can know my updates.

If anyone is interested in writing, there is a team called "Tips For Writing, Incredible Health & Weight Loss". It is a very good team and there is a lot of different topics all under one roof. So come and take a look.

Best wishes to you all.

Hope everyone can enjoy their day.

Joanna, I believe you are definitely getting your exercise in!

We absolutely have shows on our mind for 2013! That was a big part of deciding to lease him - so that my daughter could have a horse ready to be competitive in her last year as a junior. I hope that she will go to a few hunter/jumper shows and compete in Long Stirrup or Children's Hunter and Eq., and I hope to go to a couple of dressage shows, and do Training Level or even 1st Level. He is showing talent for leg yield, and if I can work to get him to hold a canter lead on a loop, then I should be able to do all the movements. It would be my first foray into 1st level, so that's exciting. So much of this dressage stuff is new to me and my poor old "hunter style" body, that there is very little muscle memory to help keep me erect, knees not clinching, hands in the proper places, etc., etc. Well, at least it keeps me active and learning.

The ice is still a problem here, I hope I don't kill myself walking out of work today. I thought it would have melted and wore some spiky heeled boots, and that was not very smart.

WOW, another long day. I just came in from helping to clean the barn tonight. Well truth be told..I came in about 8 - Just me and my grandson to clean all the stalls in the barn and night feed the horses. It took us longer than usual...first because none of the volunteers showed up to help out because of the weather...and with 28 stalls we have our hands full. The poor kid as sick as he was cleaned them all out everyone of them and I refilled them with fresh bedding and filled the waters. We both feed me...I did the grain and he put in the hay...then let them all back in. We were out there from a little after 3 until 8pm.

I put a slow pot roast on this morning to cook so that supper would be ready...so we ate...then just a few minutes ago I got a call from my daughter...the one that fell the other night. She called me asking me to bring her dog food she was out of it...and could not get up and get any. As the weather warmed up today...and the hubby plowed everything in sight getting out this evening was no problem. I ran some pot roast down to her and fed her dogs and cats.....I offered to pick up her kitchen a little but she said no. That was good for me...my lower back was killing me and still is. As much as I love working with the horses it was a little too much for me and I am so out of shape...but it didn't kill me so tomorrow is another day.

Jeannie, good to hear you are progressing and nothing is serious with PI. Can't wait to hear about all the bonding and progress you two will be doing over the never few months. Are you planning to show him anywhere?

Joanna, you never fail to deliver on the news! I am so sorry to hear about your husband, and glad that he is coherent and even plowing! Wow, I do hope he got the concussion potential checked out.

Please be careful (as you are) with all this ice and icky weather. Hope the grands are helping out.

Finally back on Pi this weekend. Cut the stitches off, but the abrasion is still quite tender, he sure took a lot of skin off. Keeping it moist, but not wrapped, but he does wear sports medicine boots to go out (to cover that area) and the bed sore boots at night (in case of lying down). He is sound, so back to work on getting us both in shape!

I went to a tax seminar for the new horse laws and what they pertain to Michigan and IRS. I didn't learn to much new but a few things. It was an all day affair on Saturday. My granddaughter Alexandra went with me...an 1:40 minute ride there 12:30 to 4:30 event which ran 50 minutes over...and the ride back.

Sunday I was still coping with a house full of sick men. All three of them have been down and about for about a week. I come home from the hospital just in time to try and handle all of them. The hubby was more sore and exhausted than anything else....he took two good falls this past week. First one he went down in the indoor arena....the stud horse (JJ) was in there using it as a run around......because we have several mares in heat. When he went to let him out the horse was so excited he took down one of the fences and a 6X6 post holding it up snapped in two. The hubby caught it...square on...we had no lights the wind storm took out the electrical. So while the horse ran around the area for a while my hubby laid there on the ground in pain and could not get up. I heard the horses going nuts with his neighs so I sent my son out to check out things. He found the hubby in the sand just lying there. My son got him in and he said he had been there a good hour or more just couldn't get up...hurt his foot. Took him to the dr.....it wasn't broken but bruised and swollen quite a bit. So he was out of commission for a while...which during that time he hobbled to go down the lower level stairs...he said his foot hurt him and he picked it up again without thinking to put the other one down and .....the silly man fell down the steps hit his head on the way down and he said he again he was in pain so he thought he would just sit there or lie there a minute so he said he put his hat under his head and somehow fell asleep...I said are you crazy...you could have had a concussion. He said he woke up when my granddaughter showed up and her dog came down licking him in the face. Both my son and grandson have viruses close to the flu....and are on antibiotics and inhalers. Leaving me trying to hold down the fort.

I had to make a run on my own to get food in the house because I heard that the storm might keep us in for a few days. I went in with no snow came out with the snow coming so heavy that I could only do 20 on the back roads..I did not want to end up in a ditch so I just took my time....but getting the food in...my son at least put it away for me while I went out to feed the horses and bed them down for the night. I had to shovel my way to the barn.

Today I had to cancel my Dr. appointment because we were just one sheet of ice. I could not do it on my own...and the main tractor to plow it...I am not use to running it so the hubby had to get up and get out there and here it is after 1 in the afternoon and he is still at it...trying just to clear up to a main road.

I did manage to get some of my own work done since I work late in the evenings...but that left me very little time to come on and chat....I want to stay on track but with the weather going the way it is and having to do my work and a lot of extra things...I figure I am getting enough exercise in so I am not trying to stay caught up with any of my what I call normal routines.

We did sell one of our horses over the last couple of weeks. A nice gelding Arabian.....and I found homes for two of our adoption horses so that was a good sign. Thinking I was going to get a chance to downsize just a bit. It's not going to happen....The granddaughter took the money from the sold horse and added to it and bought another half Arabian that needs to be trained. A young 3 year old....but I must say she (the granddaughter) has good sense when it came to buying she picked a nice large bone mare...that not only will be a nice show horse but if it comes to breeding she has excellent bloodlines. Plus she got her for a great price.

I guess I have to put my law degree at work again and do a little incorporating for her and her new venture. She wants me to sit down and put a 10 year plan together for her and incorporate her as a breeding, boarding, training facility on her own. She wants to put some money she has saved through the years into building a new business for herself. She ask use to give her 14 acres.....in her name and she will build a house and barn on it...for herself. I guess we will do that ...as long as when I put things together I can see she has the means to finish it. It will be here....close but separate from the existing facility. She thinks it will take her at least 2 years to build and get things going....and another three years to five years before she can actually make a profit. At least she is smart enough to realize it is not going to happen overnight.

Ok, there I have caught you all up on my goings and comings...for a bit. I think I will read some of the input on the teams and see how everyone else is getting along. To all of you that are sick...I wish you well and hope you feel better soon. To any engagements, birthdays, anniversaries, or other great moments of life I congratulates you and wish you the best.

Joanna

Hello All,

Jeanne, thank you so much for all the well wishes and prayers. You are right I am very happy that it isn't my foot and leg. I know that you think that I go through all these procedures without any mental problems. But I do sometimes get really depressed because it always seems like there is something else that is raising it's ugly head. I try to stay strong so that I can get through them, but it isn't easy. I am very thankful that I have Scott to help me and be there for me, in person. I know that I have been slack here but have thought of you all the time.

When I have the surgery in February I will just have to type with one hand no matter how long it takes me. Sometimes I have to do that now anyway's because of the pains that I have in my hands. I think I will be able to do ok for the most part. Only time will tell.

I am going to try really hard to come back on more often. I really do miss you all.

I hope that Pi's legs will get better soon. I know it must be a long process. I will pray that he does well.

Best wishes to you all.

Hope everyone enjoys their day.

Best wishes to all!

I will keep you all in my Thoughts and Prayers

Hi, everyone!

Dot - thank you for the update - I worry when I don't hear from you. I am sorry to hear about the surgeries, but I have to say, I am so glad it's not your foot! I'll bet you are, too! That will be quite a challenge only using one hand, you will become quite adept by the end of the six weeks, but I don't envy you. That's interesting about the ligaments, I wonder if they get them from cadavers? (Hate to be morbid, but maybe it's a possibility? Anyway, it's wonderful to know what medicine can do and that our bodies can still be useful after we have passed. My own Mom donated her body to the medical school.) I am glad that you are seeing better, too, and that those surgeries went well. You must have quite a strong ability to mentally prepare for those stressful situations (procedures) you are going through, maybe we could use some tips from you.

Joanna - thanks for the feedback on Pi's legs, I didn't think about the fact that he is big might have some impact, but it makes sense. The owner did give me bed sore boots, they are stretchy and with fleece inside, and cover the front of the fetlock from above it to below it, and hook with velcro and the back of the fetlock is open. They can be used with medications. They look like someone put boots on backwards! I looked at the reviews of the boots (I think from Dover catalog) and there was an owner of another large TB who said he would come in from the paddock all bloody - same issue. She loved these boots.

Currently, he is still wrapped with a bit of vet rap and a gauze pad to cover the wound, and I try to keep it moist for best healing. We put the bed sore boots on for overnight, when he is most likely to lie down and rub the sore areas. I am trying to figure out what to do to start turning him out again now that it is going to "warm up" ever so slightly. I could still use those same boots, I just hate to have them on all the time, as the owner said they will start to rub his hair off. Anyway, hopefully it's a temporary problem. When the ground softens up or it snows, won't be an issue. We still have no snow cover! Just sub-zero temps!

Let's hear from some people who are riding!

Hello All,

Sorry again for not coming on enough. I have not been feeling well and have also been trying to do things at home. We have a lot of stuff going on right now. I will definitely try to do my best to come on more regularly.

Jennie, I am glad that your horse is doing better. I hope that he stays healthy so you can get back to riding him and stuff. It never is a good time when something happens to your animals. Thank you for all the well wishes and prayers. They really do mean a lot to me.

Joanna, Sorry to hear about the bad power outage. I hope that it didn't last too long. Were you able to get all the horses water anyway's? Thank you so much for all the prayers and well wishes. I really do appreciate them a lot.

About 3 weeks ago I had to go to the eye doctors and have laser surgery done on my eye's. When I had my Cataract surgery about a year ago, I developed wrinkles in the support that holds the lens in place. The doctor called it fog, because it almost looked like your looking through fog all the time. He did one eye one week and then the other the following week. I have to go back to him today to make sure that everything is in place and looking like it should. I do see a lot better now too.

On February 8th I am having a surgery done on my left thumb. I have for many years now been getting Cortisone shots in both of them every 3 months. That's because you can't have them any closer together than 3 months. It is just going to be Day surgery. I have a small bone that is a little of to the side and has Arthritis in it too. The doctor is going to remove that bone and put some ligaments in it's place. I'm not sure where he is taking the ligament from yet. I won't be able to use it for 6 weeks. So I will have to type with one hand. I now have to go to a lot of appointments to get the clearances to have it done. Yesterday I got to go to my lung doctor and also got some blood work done too.

Our temps have been in the minus numbers but last night it got down to 14 below. Our Siberian Husky didn't even want to stay out for any length of time. We are now suppose to be starting to warm up til next week. We might even get into the low 40's. That would be nice for a change.

Hope everyone is doing the best they can, and I will pray for all those that need it.

Best wishes to you all.

Best wishes to all!

I will keep you all in my Thoughts and Prayers

Dot, it's great to see you back and hopefully feeling a little better.

Jennie, did your vet mention having him use leg wraps or splints if he is use to laying down a lot. Maybe being such a big boy he rolls his fetlock area a lot trying to get up and down. Just a suggestion after he heals.

LittleFillyFL, that sounds like a great idea keeping a log although I would not be able to join in at least until after the winter breaks here. Maybe a link on here where anyone of us could just go on whenever and log hours.

We had a big power outtage here for 4 and 1/2 days...a lot of frozen water buckets. I had to open the back fences and let all the outside horses into the back pasture where they could get down to the river to drink. The front barn horses we had problems with busting water buckets. Makes you think what people use to do before all the modern contraptions.

Seems like that could be a goal - did you check out the team's goals?

Dot - great to hear from you, and I hope you are getting through the cold and snow okay! My horse is recovering from his stitches, I hope we can turn him out and ride again soon.

Hello All,

Now that the holidays are behind me I am hoping that I will feel well enough to start coming back on. I have missed you all so much.

I am going to try and start all over so that I can catch up with what is going on with everyone. I hope that you all have been ok.

Hope that all the beautiful horses are doing well too. Those that have gotten any snow must really like it.

Best wishes to all.

Best wishes to all!

As Murphy's Law would have it, when you get a new horse, something goes wrong!

Had a great lesson Sat. morning, then Sat. evening I was called because Pi came in from the paddock with two bloody legs. Both front fetlocks had abrasions; the RF about the size of a quarter, with a slice up/in; the LF about the size of a dime, not as deep. Both had bled quite a bit. The vet came out, said the RF wasn't too deep, but he put 5 stitches in and he's on antibiotics. He will be inside resting for about a week. The next day I went to the paddock to try and figure out what had happened; we wondered if he had stumbled, or hurt himself lying down or getting up (the ground is pretty much frozen solid with recent VERY cold weather and sub-zero wind chills), because there really is no snow cover, but there is some ice around, and of course a lot of uneven footing from when it previously had been muddy and then froze, too. The vet pointed out that the injuries were pretty much on exactly the same line/plane, so he wondered if he had caught both legs against an object. I found several areas in the paddock with large splotches of blood, some blood trails from him wandering around, but nothing near the gate, the shelter, or the waterer. The fencing is all plastic rods and then electric tape. Has anyone had a similar experience, can a horse hurt themselves lying down or getting up against hard, uneven ground?

I did notice one other horse had similar areas on his front fetlocks where the hair was all matted in a circular pattern from him lying down, I suspect. I also recalled Pi's owner saying that he had developed bed sores on his front fetlocks from some nubby matting in his stall, and she had given me bed sore boots to put on him in the event I needed them. So I also wonder if he is thin-skinned in that regard, or extra abrasive in his movements.

Fortunately, he does not really seem lame, no tendon injuries, etc. Just needs to heal up.

Any thoughts, let me know. Thanks!

Jennie.

Cam - I like the treat idea! Maybe the spook will change to wanting to stop and check, lol!

I find when I get him really working and listening, as he did in a group lesson Wed. night (working on dressage things like riding corners correctly, turn on the forehand to leg yields), he settles in very nicely and isn't bothered. It's just getting to that point! He has a nice comfy sitting trot, but I think because he is still getting back in shape, he tends to want to stop and walk (I push him through it) as we slow down to approach corners, etc. He needs to use his hind end more.

Hoping Faye or I will ride tonight, then I have a private lesson in the morning.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

The American Driving Society keep track of milage and I have a friend that does that with a pedometer type device on her carriage...good way to motivate to ride or drive.
Jennie...the trip sounded so lovely...glad you got away for so much quality time...Pi will probably decide that the table is of no consequence as suddenly as he decided it was scary...might try letting him eat a treat off of it.
Joanna...how are you feeling after your surgery...you sound fiesty.
Hope all is well with everyone out there. January is going well for me and I am looking at my new cart for my big ponies being delivered by the end of the month.

Joanna, thanks to you and Cynthia and FW for keeping up on here. I was off work for 16 days, but with Christmas and then a vacation, I wasn't checking in.

Had a nice quiet Christmas at home with Russ and Faye, then on Dec. 30 I went to Maui for a week with my sister (Barb) and her 18 y.o. son (Ryland). We got to stay in a family member's condo in Kaanapali where I also spent my honeymoon, 10th and 20th anniversary. Hope to go again for our 30th next year, if my 90 y.o. Aunt still owns it! My sister's husband died not quite two years ago (lung cancer) and she wanted to spread some ashes in Maui, another of his favorite places. Despite crazy weather (wind and rain squalls), the day we picked turned out to be great on the part of the island (south of Lahaina) her brother-in-law (who lives in Napili) chose for the ceremony. It was also the same beach where her husband taught Ryland to surf when he was about 6 years old. 5 of us paddled out on surf boards or paddle boards, and my sister Barb and I took a kayak. It was a beautiful time, paddling out near sunset, calm waters, turtles swam by and the whales were out there, but we didn't see any that day. Had a nice time reflecting on Paul's memory, depositing some ashes, and then tossing flowers on top. I'll post a photo.

Previously, New Year's Day, the brother-in-law (works at the Ritz) got us free tickets for a whale watch on a small boat - about 10 of us on board with the Captain and his wife. We saw a mom and her baby quite a bit, and also two bulls "dueling" or playing. I'll post a couple of photos. Really magnificent time!

Then, her sister-in-law (who is a masseuse at the Ritz), got us free day spa passes, and gave my sister a massage there. What a gorgeous spa! I treated myself to the sauna, hot tub, shower and relaxation room and refresments. Then we went up to the bar and had a couple of drinks - lots of golfers/wives/families around and Jennifer Hudson was singing that night (no, we didn't have tickets to that!). It seemed like a hurricane outside - wind squalls and rain had caused the day's golf tournament (Day 1 of 4) to be cancelled - it was the PGA Tour's opening tournament for 2013. We had free tickets to that, too, courtesy of the condo's manager who was in charge of transportation. Then Saturday, wind/rain continued and caused them to cancel again. Now it was down to a 54-hole tournament (minimum to be official), and then Sunday morning, they delayed it a few hours again, due to higher winds (40+ mph) blowing the balls around! Off of tees and moving on the greens after stopping. They started and then stopped again, and by then we were at the airport and I haven't checked to see what happened!

Despite the crazy weather, we got to snorkel a couple of days, overcast mostly and windy, but still awesome. Played lots of Scrabble and Qwirkle, and had some great meals. Very relaxing!

Took the red eye home, then got a few hours sleep, then I rode Pi last night. He has definitely decided that the card table at C is scary, which is so annoying, because he is only "scared" when I am on him, and not so much when I lead him past it. He has settled in really well. Daytime temps this week are mostly about 31 or higher 30s, so should be able to ride a few times. :)

How is everyone else doing?

P.S. I made it through the holidays without putting on weight.

Is anyone going to join one of the horse associations ride logs? My daughter started one last year with the Quarter Horse Association and I am going to do one this year with the Paint Horse Association. Think it will help me with a number of my goals - just wanted to see if there are others out there that plan to do something similar.
