When we were at the agility trials. Both of our dogs seemed to have the same problems. One was with contacts. and they are usually very strong at them. The other was, at the top of the ramp they would just stop and kind of look around like they were saying, "oh look, I can see this and I can see that." Which unfortunately add.ed to their times. We think it may have been because it was so windy that day.

Another thing that is funny is when one is performing the other will watch and start barking very loud like they are cheering the other on.

Shirley, that is funny. My Miss Chelsi likes to bark. A lot. But she doesn't do that. I sometimes think if we only had Miss Sam, Sam wouldn't bark as much as she does. Sam seems to bark mostly at Chelsi as if she is saying "shutty sister".

Char is my barking sheltie, no one had to teach her how to do that, and we are having a hard time gettiing her to stop. She just plain LIKES to bark, or as we say sometiimes, she likes to hear her voice.
Now when she wants to bark, if she is already laying down, she doesn't even lift her head, she just does a little "woof" and lays there. Do you think this means we are making progress with her. LOL

We've been combing/brushing Miss Sammie. She doesn't like it but we have to get that hair out. It's too hot for her. Last night, we concentrated on the butt area. It's incredible how much hair we got out of just that one area.

Next weekend we are going camping. The hubs is going to the campground a couple of days early because he as the vacation time to burn and I don't. I'll go on Friday. He will take the shelties with him and while he is there, he's going to try to teach Sammie to get in and out of the camper on her own. We usually lift them in and out. Sammie is so heavy that I don't want to lift her that much. My back can't take it. Miss Chelsi (10 yrs) can't do the steps. In fact, she can't come up the stairs in the house so we have to carry her. But we feel it's time Sammie learns and she's big enough to be able to do it.

I think my Sammie is afraid of the dark. When I let her out in the evening she won't move off the patio until I go out and walk in the yard with her. This will become a pain in the you know what come winter time. lol

This isn't really a Sheltie Story, but I thought you might enjoy it.

God and Dog

by Wendy Francisco

I look up and I see God

I look down and see my dog.

Simple spelling G-O-D

Same word backwards d-o-g.

They will stay with me all day

I’m the one who walks away.

But both of them just wait for me…

And dance at my return with glee.

Both love me no matter what

Divine God and canine mutt…

I take it hard each time I fail

But God forgives…dog wags his tail.

God thought up and made the dog

Dog reflects a part of God

I’ve seen love from both sides now

It’s everywhere…Amen…bow wow.

I look up and I see God

I look down and see my dog.

And in my human frailty

I can’t match their love for me.

Here's the latest cute thing our Char is doing.
We were sitting in the family room, watching Tv, all four of us. And then I noticed Char was gone, I called her, and she was hiding around the corner of the L.R. by the stereo. When I called she came running to me. Now that doesn't seem real special, does it, but we have noticed she sometimes goes to that spot, peeks around the corner, and barks once, when she barks I call her, and she comes running lickety, split.
It's like she is playing Hide and Seek with us, and she really loves to do it. My husband told me he had seen it earlier, and I didn't believe it, but she really is doing it.
She is leaving her little paw prints all over our heart.

Love it Shirley! My Sheltie only jumps onto our leather sofa and one end so the arm rest serves as a pillow. He seems likes the cool spots in the house. He has a lot of fur because he likes to be outside in our long cold Canadian winters. That and sticking his nose in the snow!

My sweet little Chardonnay was so funny last nite.
She jumped up in the recliner, which also rocks, and it seemed like she was saying, What is wrong with this chair. So here she is webble wobbling, trying to figure out the system.
Then she just layed down and enjoyed the ride.
Really funny to see.

Our sheltie gets a combo of lamb and rice along with chicken and rice. The company is called Nutram and is made in Canada. We've just started giving our sheltie
Glucosamine/Chondroitin a month ago after his xRays showed arthritis in his knees and feet. The vet told us what dosage to give him. He gets his when my DH takes his, LOL!

I haven't really talked to my vet about their food. My NIL (nephew in law) told me to look at the ingredients. He said if corn meal is listed in the first 5 ingredients, don't buy it. He learned this from his vet.

We were at the Boat & Sportshow yesterday and there was a booth there giving out free dog good samples so I took a couple. The food is locally made ( in Nebraska but I'm in Kansas City, so they still consider that local, go figure) and sold in Hy-Vee stores. The ingredients list is phenomenal. However, went I went to Hy-Vee today, I couldn't find it. It's supposed to be reasonably priced too.

It's called "Doc's Choice" and it was created by a vet.

I'm trying to find out what is the best food. So far, I'm hearing the all natural, health food ones. What do you think? Does your vet recommend IAMS? I'm not sure I'll always be able to make her food, so I need a back up. One site said Chuck Wagon was pretty good for a commercial food.

Hi all. I've been curing my Sheltie of Seizures. She had begun having seizures last summer, and really scaring me. Was tested for liver, heart, kidney problems and all ok. Then I read about the problems with dog foods and making your own dog food. I have been making her dog food, supplemented with vitamins, and she is having no seizures and is frisky as a puppy, coat shining. eyes bright. I'm sooooooo happy because I love her so much. A couple of days ago, we turned our two shelties out for a romp in the snow. Chardonnay didn't stay out too long, but Glacier wanted to be out longer. My DH went back to watching the news and forgot her. She started barking quietly (she has been debarked) so we did not hear her. Chardonnay went to the sliders and then ran into the family room where DH was and started barking, he then remembers that Glacier was still out, so he let her in. Chardonnay was just alerting us that someone needed to let her in.

Sue, I am hoping that your dog is better, I am praying for her. God loves us our little babies too, as he made them as well.

Thedragonfly ~ I've done that before too. We do have a fenced in backyard but I have forgotten the dogs usually because I got caught up watching a movie or something.

One time, I left one of my shelties outside and went to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night and noticed she wasn't in the bedroom. This prompted me to go look for her. Sure enough, there she was by the backdoor. That was a very long time ago and that sheltie has since passed away.

Okay, since we're confessing, I'm getting a bit older and more absent-minded. My girl stays right in the back yard when I let her out (none of our dogs ever needed a fence since being trained to their boundaries as puppies). But, now and then, I forget for a while that she is out, and she just waits patiently at the back door. My beautiful girl, age 9, is having seizures, had a nasty one this morning. We have a cabinet that we keep our piano rolls in, and yesterday Jiminy was prancing through the living room and all of sudden stopped, backed up and was staring at the cabinet. Then he slowly extended his nose and started sniffing, then growling at the door. I got up to see what he was looking at and he was growling at his reflection. He discovered the sliding door mirror in our office and I caught him in there yesterday checking himself out. It was like he was saying, Damn I'm good looking! Yeah, who's a stud!

I did the same thing with Jiminy the other night, except it was about 4 hours before I realized it.
Our dog Kinzee, likes to jump in the car and one day while removing groceries she had jumped in and I didn't see her. I closed up the car and went inside. a few hours later I am wondering where she is(she likes to crawl under thew bed and sleep so I had assumed that was where she was) and couldn't find here. So i am frantically looking, go outside and see her sitting in the drivers seat looking out the window just waiting. I felt so bad because it was a hot day that day. now I always do a head count before shutting the door.

NO You are not a bad sheltie Mom. You thought she was indoors, we all know, including Chelsi that you would never lock her outdoors on purpose. Our sweet little Shelties, are such forgiving little babies, and she loves you just as much as she ever did.

The good news, you have raised a very smart girl, and she knew to stay right there. We will not focus on what might have been, but on what is, and she is still very loved and very safe., and she always will be.

I'm a BAD sheltie mom.

DH and I went to Eureka Springs ARk for the weekend. Friday night I took the girls out for a tinkle just before bedtime. I did not have Chelsi (8 yo) on a leash because I know she'll stay with me and there weren't any people around. Sam was on a leash. Well as I want back to our room, I came in, shut the door, unleashed Sam and locked the door. What I didn't know was that Chelsi had not come in the room. So she slept outside all night. THANK GOD it wasn't freezing cold, rainy or there weren't any people around. She might have run off if there had been people around. I felt SO BAD. The next morning, hub got up to take the girls out and said "where's Chelsi". I jumped straight out of bed and looked for her even under the beds too. He opened the door and there she was.

OMG, I felt SO BAD. Hub got real mad at me as he should. What I did was awful and I still feel bad about it even tho I apologized profusely to Chelsi. Bless her heart, she knew our room and stayed close.

I had to come here and confess my sin, not that it makes me feel any better.

Funny story Gail. it seems like Jiminy always has something in his mouth. He is a very busy pup. We use a stop command as well as a "leave it" and he responds pretty well. We are teaching him down now, he does it ok but not quick enough. We are using the command "BOOM" we want an immediate down when it is said.
Shirley, one of our horses id named Gabrielle and e call her Gabby for short.
Funny about the praying, jiminy has just started this kind of part groan, bark, whine growl noise almost under his breath, like he's complaining to us, it's funny to hear.

Oh Gabrielle is such a pretty name. I wish we could afford a dog whisperer because I'd like to know if my shelties like their names.

Hahahaha I'd like to think she is praying too, maybe giving thanks to her wonderful new parents.

So Gail, Sammy wants to be an accountant. That is great that she is learning so quickly in response to the "stop" command.
I have been using "off" with Abby Rose when I want her to let go of something. I started that, when I discovered how well she loves to play fetch, she likes to bring things back, but then she wants to play tug of war, which I don't allow with her tendency to be dominant.
I was looking at the beginning of this thread when Rick was talking about his treadmill dog, and I had replied how shelties want to do everything we do
Now here's my cute story, when we pray before meals, Abby "talks" the whole time, not really a bark, but just talking. I'm hoping she is asking God to help her curb her barking. LOL
One thing I forgot to tell about her visit with the dog whisper was that she doesn't like her name. So I had mentioned that I always had thought of my next dog being called Gabrielle, and calling her Gabby (how appropriate). She said she liked that name, now I just have to remember to use it. I used it last night when she was being VERY vocal, and she responded to it last nite, when I said "stop" but she did not respond appropriately when I said Abby.

I often remember the story Rick told me about the horse and lots of patience and love. It keeps me inspired.
Have a great day everyone.

I've been training Sammie on the stop, sit, stay commands. She's doing pretty good.

Today, a grocery receipt had fallen to the floor. She picked it up and was walking around with it. Since I hadn't recorded it to Quicken yet, I still needed the receipt. I simple said stop and she dropped the receipt. But it was cute seeing her with this long piece of paper hanging out of her mouth.

She goes in on Monday to get spayed.

the other day my wife was walking on the treadmill. now Lilly our oldest Sheltie, She has to get on and walk before anyone else or she just stands there and barks at you. So She gets on and does her minute or two and she is happy. Then Leslee gets on and proceeds with her walk, along comes Jiminy! He is at the back of the treadmill trying to bite the tread as it goes around, suddenly he decides he wants to get up there with Leslee and gets his two front paws on the treadmill and his little legs are going as fast as they can while his back legs are stationary behind the treadmill. Now Leslee doesn't realize he's back there and I come walking around the corner and see him and busted up laughing! I could just see the expression on his face, something is not right here...???He couldn't figure out how to get his front feet off the treadmill. After I stopped laughing I picked him up. now he doesn't go near the treadmill.

I am glad to hear you enjoyed your camping trip.
I wanted one more before winter. (I always want one more) but DH winterized the 5 wheeler, and tied the tarp on. Do you think he is trying to tell me something?
My son=in=law and dau was just over, they offered to drive us to Fl, and then come back and come down to pick us up about 4 months later. Sounds good to me.

And Sam. You are so smart....Wow.

DH and I went camping this past weekend and I forgot to take the kennel for Sam to sleep in. However, she did real good. She slept all night and didn't potty in the camper but let us know when she was ready to go outside. We were so proud of her.

So last night, here at home, I put her in the kennel but didn't lock the door. Some time in the night she figured out she wasn't locked in but laid in the bedroom until it was time to get up.

Then earlier today, she stood at the back door and barked to be let out. I think it's official, she's potty trained.

Last vet visit for Sammie resulted in getting her very first dog tag.

I put it on her a couple of days later and every once in a while she'll try to get it in her mouth.

Shirley my dogs are the same way. Sam (4 mos) will just bark and bark and bark at Chelsi (8 yrs). Finally I have to intervene to make her stop.

Gail, sounds like you dog wants to be a bird dog.LOL

It is really funny for us to watch Glacier attempt to correct our juvenile delinquent. Abby is a alpha "wanna be", and is constantly trying to send that message to Glacier.

Glacier endures patiently but after a while, she gives her the lip, and sometimes a little nip, and if that doesn't work, she will literally sit on her, or put her front paws and head on top of her as she sits on the floor. She is sending her a strong message that she is the queen mother here, without actually hurting her.
I try to let the girls settle their own differences unless it should turn nasty.
Abby is quite a barker, and when Glacier hears that too much, she gives her "the look" and goes to another room.
They are lots of fun.

This evening, the hub and I were sitting out on the patio enjoying the chiminea (sp) when we notice something in Samantha's mouth. Then we realized it was a dead dove. I don't know where in the heck she found it but we had a dickens of a time chasing her down. She finally stopped and dropped it and when she did I charged her and made a loud noise so she'd run and I got the dead bird. Needless to say, neither of us were very anxious for any kisses from her. lol

At times like that, don't you wish you could read what is going on in their mind.

Wouldn't it be great to be the "Dog whisperer" or a dog communicator. That would be so neat!
