Julia, I'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis. I hope you are feeling better by now - I've had friends go through chemo, and I know how rough it can be. It'll take a while for you to get back to normal. It will pass, it just takes some time.

I know quite a few people who have chemo brain. Patience, Julia, is a virtue, as the old, irritating saying goes.

Confessional:
I haven't made a big deal of my diagnosis... I guess it is, but I just zip up because I see so much cross track elsewhere on the InterWebs of what to do or not to do by people who have never had cancer but they knew someone whose sister's best friend's boyfriend's dad did such and such etc. And because I kinda knew I had it coming with my stubborness about getting my life in order, physically, mentally, spiritually. It's still not together, by any stretch of the imagination...

But I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2018, although they took their sweet time letting me know, passing the buck as to who was going to call me, from the biopsy date to the time my ob/gyn finally called me some 3 weeks later...

So I did three rounds of chemo and the third one my body just shut down and I could only have a little bit of water every once in awhile - basically did a three week fasting.... figured if G_d needed me sooner, that was okay, but He kept Moses alive some 40 plus days without food and water, according to the story, so I figured He still had the Formula for keeping folks alive even when Mankind says we keel over and die after 3 days without water.

Then of course in trying to make contact with the medical staff, we were horrified by the rudeness of the nurse or nurse's assistant who called me to demand why I hadn't bothered to show up for the next round of chemo, such yelling and shouting at him over the phone. So it's like, oh well, forget them, they don't need my business. Evidently they didn't, because there has been NO contact from any of the office staff, from the nurse, the nurse aides, the scheduler, none especially from the oncologist (who was laughing hysterically and creepily at my rapid weight loss the previous time I saw him, one week into the fast after the chemo, not the least bit of concern.). NoBody from that office. I guess, good riddance???

So I've been doing alternative treatments and gradually shifting my diet to include much more vegetables and fruits (which doesn't explain why I'm eating some cereal right now, but I had some veggies earlier for breakfast.). Planning to research some different Cancer Treatment centers to find someone that's a bit more open minded about combining complementary and/or adjutant therapies...

As for $39.99 - I kinda thought Mark was yanking my chain, but this whole cancer deal has messed with my brain. I am in a "fog" more often than not... I was thinking I can't believe he got suckered into paying that much to subscribe to SparkPeople just to listen to me ranting and raving... hah.

I, too, didn't know about chemo or even about the diagnosis, Julia. It's a lousy experience and I"m glad you sound as though you're doing well -- feisty as ever.

I will not pay $39.95 for Spark people. I just remembered -- one time my husband and I went to a garage sale where everything was free after 4 pm. we went right at 4 pm -- hte couple who were having the sale were moving out of state. I got a $80 menorah made in Israel for free.

Julia remains a rank rookie w.r.t my sense of humor. Laurie, Gail (Eco), Nu, Phebe and others have me figured out. ($39.99 a month indeed...).

and Chemo???!? So glad that seems behind you!

Whaaaat? I don't pay $39.99 a month for SparkPeople! I better not! I paid the $20 or $19.95 or whatever it was for the no-ad version. That's been pretty good for me!!

As for other stupendous bargains... I got a really cool "carpet bag" style piece of luggage at TJ Maxx some 25-30 years ago, before I got married... It's made by Capezio (sp? the ones who usually make Ballet toe shoes and such for the dance industry), nice suede leather handles and trims... was well over $100+ back then in 1990's, and I think I got it for like $15 bucks?? I kept feeling like I was shoplifting!!! But they didn't bat an eye! I would have bought more if they had them in stock. Could've sold them for $100 each from all the drooling complements I have received on mine since then.

Lots of times at the end of the month, I can get food for a penny or more because the stores are not supposed to sell food after the sell by date... but they have it still in stock... so that's happened a LOT... Not all stores do that. Some just pull the food and donate it to charity or throw it out, depending on the local regulations. But the one here... well maybe it's one of those "uh oh, we're busted, if you turn a blind eye, we'll sell it to ya for a penny, SUCH A DEAL!"

Just this past fall, after I lost so much weight fasting from the chemo, I was at a Goodwill and found this really cool green and blue silk scarf, had no idea what I was gonna wear with it, other than with my various dark blue shirts. It was marked .99 but it was on a Wednesday and I was with my mom and she gets Senior discount, so I think I got it for like 40 cents?? as it was 50% off so .49 and then my mom's senior discount... anyway it was cheap. Got home and finally found the "how could I have missed it" sewn in label - it was a HALSTED (sp?? ) designer scarf. My girlfriend was soooo impressed. And I did find a green twinset from Land's End 100% cotton during that same shopping trip, perfectly matched the scarf. It had the short sleeve knit shirt and then the matching long sleeve cardigan. I wish it had been the cashmere that they sell...haha. but anyway yea, it was on 1/2 price Wednesday and then my mom's senior discount. Still like less than $5 bucks for the two?? I can't remember how much it was. Or maybe I paid $5 for my total purchases - that outfit, another scarf pink, a red knit 3/4 sleeve sweater with a boatneck styling, a scarf that matched it, and a pair of booties in my size (which rarely I find because everyone and their aunt wears the same sizes...).??

If I'm lucky and I find out when the next Haddasseh spring sale is (before Passover), I usually get some stupendous deals then... but they switch it up all the time and since I don't attend their congregation, I'm at the mercy of the happenstance advertising that I might or might not see. I really need to see if they have a Facebook page where I can be on their list permanently. They've allegedly collected email from me in years past so I can be notified in the next year, but then I guess they lose the list???

Sooo yea, it's pretty cool to find those serendipitous bargains!!

I once bought tall candles and they were marked $.40 - forty cents each. The cashier rang them up as $.04 each. I told her no, they were FORTY cents each, not FOUR cents. (This was before all the coding and automation.) She told me she could read just fine, thank you. So yes, I ended up paying $.04 for each candle. I wasn't going to cause a fight about it.

1 cent. Don't know how anyone can top that.

I got a V-neck button down sweatshirt for 50Ę at a flea market many years ago and I still wear it.

No price ring-up like your bargain, Phebe, but I seem to recall getting something to wear for 50 cents.

I have received 'gifts' a few times with online and old-school phone/mail order purchases. The people packing my order inadvertently put in something not on the list.

Sparkpeople membership. Still only $39.99/month. Well worth it for the likes of you.

I went browsing at Nordstrom's Rack yesterday, and found a top I had been looking for all summer. Lovely little boho styled top by Free People, in cotton and rayon, perfect for travel. But couldn't find it in WA state, and didn't want to order it not knowing how it might look on me.

But I found it in Nordy's Rack.

Tried it on, looked cute despite being a bubble top, figured I could just remove the elastic inside the waist.

Took it out to the cashier, who rang it up. It was marked half price, but it rang up as $.01. Seriously, ONE CENT!!! I said WHAT????? She swiped the tag again and said yes, it's one cent. I asked how can that happen? She said it happens occasionally, some items are marked to be transferred elsewhere but get overlooked, and so the system reads them as just one cent.

So I handed her a penny. No tax, LOL!!!

So, any other amazing and surprising bargains that you've found???

(As my mother would have said, at that price how could you go wrong?
