When these sad events occur, Gwynn, it's not so surprising (disgusting, of course, but not surprising), as pedophiles seek out environments where children, at their most vulnerable, are known to be and in their care. Think of schools, churches, physicians (sadly), coaches, and the like. That's usually where you find these kind of stories.

that is amazing. there is a theater here in Minneapolis called The Children's Theater--attached to an art institute. A former teacher there left went to Mexico and now is back in California -- now being accused of abusing female students taht this tehater company and school.

I am currently reading "Three Women" by Lisa Taddeo, about female sexuality. The author followed three women over a period of eight years before putting her research into book form. One woman had a sexual relationship with her high school teacher when she was 17. He was just shy of 30. I am at the point where, five years after the fact, she finally brings charges against him. The part that is so telling are the people who come to his defense: One student in particular, so pretty, that she became Miss North Dakota in a beauty pageant. The point made was if he did not make overtures to a beautiful girl, why would he select Maggie who was not nearly as beautiful? To me, that was the most telling part: The idea that an older man groomed a very young, impressionable, girl is completely overlooked. So the bottom line is, they are still missing the whole point when these events occur.

My husband's company did actually do some sexual harrasment seminars in the 1980's and 1990's - when he first started in the industry, it was basically all male programmers. The only females working there were secretaries and that name was later changed to Administrative Assistants etc. He always felt uncomfortable because soft porn was blatantly displayed in various programmer's cubes, pin-ups, the whole nine years, and he had a church cultural background of porn and harassment not being kosher. Plus, some of it was male on male harassment (although the perpetrators and the victims were not openly gay - many were married men with wives and children....which, doesn't really mean anything, as we all know people who married as straight and eventually did come out as gay, or lesbian, depending on the specific spouse's new orientation.).

Anyhooooo so basically they shut all that down, laid off the perpetrators when conveniently able to under some other "reason" (so they didn't get sued for firing someone for being a sexual harasser, I guess??? not really sure why... or the typical perpetrators with all their porn were not really getting any work done because of sitting around with all their porn to distract them. I'm guessing a combination of all the above...)... so now, displaying "sexual harrassing" photos, posters with jokes/innuendos, making verbal innuendos to anyone - male on male, male to female, female to male, anyone to transgender, anything - they can be fired for it now.

Part of this was actually the result of ongoing discussions with one of my husband's co-workers who did go through a transgender process and was sort of "accidentally outed" before the person was ready to make an official request through HR. They did and pretty much right away all these seminars and such started being done... (for awhile, they had to designate a single bathroom as the room for the transgender, because the various straight ones were all going "not in MY restroom...!!" Things got settled down and a more peaceful environment started to pervade the atmosphere with all the trash removed from walls etc.

That specific person no longer works there, but in the meantime, hiring of women has gone up quite a bit. One of my husband's favorite bosses was a woman who was hired on in the late 1980's (she retired eventually.).

So workshops on sexual harassment DO happen... at least, in the company my husband works in. I'm not going to go so far as to say that there is no sexual harassment going on now, but it's not as overt as it was. And he says that now in the hiring process, they do a lot of team interviewing, and one of the "watch out for" is whether the interviewee seems to have that sort of disrespect of people of opposite sex or a harassment type of attitude, joking about body parts, whatever, anything that makes the employees doing the interviewing feel uncomfortable and could possibly signal a person who might make other employees feel like they were being harassed.

Now, now, ladies, shoulder pads were very big, pun unintended, in the 1980's. so EY is not so far behind the times. Big shoulder pads, big hair. Or was that just the receptionists?

As I recall, shoulder pads were thought of as a message of power.

"Ernst & Young hired an outside consultant, Marsha Clark (not that one), to teach promising women at EY how to grow their networks, negotiate and 'build stronger, high-performing teams,' according to the written presentation." -- Nay, how to be a good girl, make no waves and yet advance in the company.

"Sheesh" to all of it.

I found it quite ironic, especially after #METOO made headlines.

What I found particularly telling was that some women who reviewed the course found it to be outstanding. And I wonder what the motivation was for that kind of a review: To make sure that they are perceived as getting along in the workplace? To ensure a future promotion in that environment? I have no idea.

When I read the part about the shoulder pads, I thought that we were actually talking about the 1940s.

The bottom line seems to be we still have a long way to go yet.

Unbelievable. When I started reading this I thought it was from the 1960's. Looks nothing has changed.

Interesting article about a workplace seminar given to instruct women in the company how to appropriately dress and interact with men:
