I guess I'm the opposite. My period was irregular after having babies (partially from breastfeeding for several years between the 3 kids) but in the past few years, I've missed periods for 3-5 months a couple times and now my last real period was in April but I had a light day of spotting in October. My doctor did blood work and said I was perimenopausal at 39. I'll be 42 next month and would be happy to never have it again. Oddly enough, the spotting or full period seems to come on when I miss my regular 3 mile run 1-3 times per week. Even running only once a week seems to keep it at bay. I really can't believe it's that sensitive to running, but tracking exercise and period it really looks that way.

I had an ablation when i was 28. That did the trick for me blood flow wise.

I had a partial hysterectomy when i was 46. I still relish it, too MyRun4TheRoses..... let's see... a 20 something yr marriage, 2 10 lbs babies, & i was a 'virgin'???

I had surgery in Sept for adenomyosis & they removed a fibroid plus the built-up tissue, etc along the uterine lining. My first period after that was a lot better -- no knife-stabbing pain. But the 2nd and third months had most of the pain again. Now I have an appointment scheduled with a different doctor to have my hormone levels checked. (my idea & a suggestion from a friend who did that for mental health reasons)

'sigh'

I had all those symptoms too. I started a plant based diet a few months ago for my blood pressure (it worked, down below 118 now!!)

and it seemed to help with some of the symptioms too! weird. HOWEVER, this past month my period was NINE days long. NINE!!!!

What in the holy heck??

That time of the month should be hitting anytime today, at the earliest. I have been a bottomless pit with food. BUT I've exercised 60 minutes a day for the last 4 days! Yay me! :)

I just joined this group (I'll be 41 on June 24th) and this topic caught my eye!!!! I have what I call "death cramps' for 48 hours as soon as my period starts. I am almost bed-ridden. They've gotten worse as the years go by. The blood flow isn't super heavy like it used to be, though. And yes, the cravings are soooo hardcore as I've gotten older -- and it's like (they day before and day of) I'm a human garbage disposal; I can't really get full !!! It's so crazy.

Thanks for sharing all of your posts, girls!!!

I had a hysterectomy almost 5 years ago (I'm currently 46) and it was the BEST think I ever had done. So I no longer have to go thru that anymore. To this day I still relish in the feeling.

I am heavily involoved in the embassy of hope. Link below.

Your doctor can give you a simple blood test to tell you where you are in that 'journey'. If your beyond having children, I'm surprised they did not discuss options of NOT having periods at all.

Meds available for PMDD include birth control pills (you've probably seen YAZ commercials) which my dr wants to avoid b/c of the hormones (my sister died of breast cancer) or antidepressents (which I am avoiding b/c they tend to decrease libido and cause weight gain and I'm already struggling with both!). So, my dr suggested either wellbuterin (which I'd already tried with bad sad effects) or lamictal (which is relatively new for PMDD). I started 25mg of lamictal and we will stop at 50 or 100mg depending on how things are going. It is an anti-seizure medication that was found to be a mood stabilizer, so it is now used for bipolar and more recently the PMDD. I go to a major teaching hospital though so someone else may not be willing to try it. For epilepsy and bipolar they go up to 400mg, so it's a really low dose for PMDD. Let me know how you're doing!

KAT, what's the med you started?? I would love some help with exactly what you described: the irritability, the sense of being overwhelmed for no reason at all, crying for no reason, etc....

Hi - I am in perimenopause and have PMDD. Quite the combo! I just started a med a week ago, and I sailed right through that week before my cycle. I used to never have even PMS, and PMDD is much worse. It was so nice not to feel anxious, overwhelmed or irritable! I hate those mood swings. I'm on a very low dose right now, but I can tell it is helping. I actually learned about PMDD from SP - so thank you SP!!!

An ablation is when they actually cauterize the uterine lining; it's an in-out procedure and in some women, it eradicates their monthlies totally; in others it reduces it quite a bit. But like I said, because I still have my ovaries, I am still producing hormones and man oh man, it's like my PMS is in overdrive!!! The procedure is for women who are done with having children; it hinders you getting pregnant. Anyway, if there is someone who has had this procedure, I sure would like your take on the whole hormonal thing!!

Hey Gals, just saw this thread. For awhile, I was having THE heaviest periods AND every 2 weeks. I was anemic and so fed up,to say the least. In April, I had a uterine ablation and have not had a period since! Yes, it is fantastic BUT the mood swings and pms symptons are now increased like you cannot believe. The week before what use to be my period, is just hell now. Honestly, I should hide for that week every month! Has anyone else had an ablation?? If so, how'd it work out for you???

I can really relate. Mine have been getting worse for a couple of years. They are usually so heavy. My iron was down to 8.2. I've been taking iron for a few months. They just keep getting worse, but this month was different, so I thought. It started very light for 2 days. I was so excited, thinking I was going to have a normal or light period. Well, it wasn't meant to be. Day 3 it kicked into high gear, and now it's been over a week, but the last 2 days have been lighter again.

I also have a terrible craving for chocolate a couple of days before until about half way through. I have not been successful keeping away from a little bit of candy.

Yes, I have heard that once you're period-free for a year that means you've hit menopause. Thinking about it - shouldn't it be called menostop? Your periods end, not stop and start up again. Or maybe "thankgodiamfinallydonewiththat."

CandiSF - I know it's really hard to kill off those sugar cravings. For me it's chocolate. I'll try to stave off the cravings with fruit, but I figure if they last more than 2 days then I'll give in. However I'll eat better choices. For example, I'll have a chocolate pudding or some chocolate cereal instead of a bag of Hershey kisses. At least I am not getting all the saturated fat that comes with chocolate candy and cake.

Hi
It's called: Peri-menopause, but what you said means the same thing.
emoticon
Check with your Doctor to be sure as we all experience it differently. But yeah, I TINK it is the beginning of you going through Menopause. I went through it since I was 38 and I am now 49 and at the ending of it all myself. THANK GOD!
emoticon
No, not neccesarily will it take you that long either, just in case from what I said, you are wondering.
emoticon
Go with how you feel too, because My Doctor says I am as of a year ago, just now, going through Menopause. NOPE! I am nearing the end and I & my DH know the difference. LOL
All's I still have mainly is the hot sweats. But that can be caused from spices and or foods I eat too.
You should ask a pharmascist about: Estrogen OTC tabs. See if they are right for you. Or even ask your Doctor. Mine kept saying, I was a good candidate for some prescription pill, but I never got any. I don't like taking Prescriptions anyway. I am a firm believer in Vitamins, so far.

I can tell when I'm going to start my period just by how I feel exercising. Usually a few days before I start, my normal routine (bike riding, becomes increasingly difficult. Then to top it off I have tend to go way overboard on the snacking because of the cravings for sweets and other high-calorie foods. Any suggestions?

I have been experiencing mild periomenopause symptoms for a few years now (mostly night sweats and the occasional hot flash). I sometimes need a day of recovery after my period ends. What's worse is that during my period I now also get several hot flashes a day and night sweats. This is on top of mush mind, body aches, fatigue, irritability, and a 1 to 2 day migraine.

This month I decided to see what eating clean would do. I cut way back on sodium, sugar, snacks, and anything that comes in a can or a box, and to drink more water. I had lots of fruit and veggies. I felt much better - no migraine this time, less body aches, less mush mind, and I actually didn't feel like zonking out all day long. I also started on black cohosh. I'll see how I do next month.

Last month it was light this month its heavy. I just ended it and I feel really tired. Sometimes I feel bad before and sometimes after and sometimes I just feel bad between the periods then the period comes and I feel okay. I guess this is menapause or premenapause. Anyone going through the same thing. Its unpredictable on how I will feel. But right now I fee like _rap and it after my period!
