Sweet: Caramel rice cakes are always a good treat. But every night, I do indulge with a Hershey's miniature. I have to have something sweet after dinner.

Salty: usually some kind of pretzel treat or light popcorn with a seasoning mixture.

Both: I created a pseudo trail mix of Honey Nut Cheerios, roasted peanuts, and dried cranberries. You have to be careful on that one though and make sure you measure portion sizes. Although it is a healthy snack, the fat and calories will start to add up!

BUT, I will say that if I deprive myself of the things I want, it will just come back to bite me later. So now I "Don't deprive, portion size!" (Wow, I just thought of that, will be using it from now on :)

I arrange a sliced Granny Smith apple on a plate, drizzle with lite carmel syrup, then top with 1 TBSP crushed nuts - getting salty and sweet combined with fiber and nutrients

Creamy/crunchy- 1 Laughing Cow Light cheese wedge (french onion) with a few low-fat Triscuits or wheat thins

Sweet- I don't get cravings for sweets/desserts very often, so when I do get one, I allow myself to have one or two Hershey's kisses or a small dip of ice cream or the like, so that I don't feel deprived.

Salty--I have just found those Special K crackers, which are less than 100 calories for 17 crackers.

Sweet--I'm addicted to Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. Trying to limit my addition to one every couple of days, since they are a bit higher in calories at 180 each.

Sweet: Gala apple; small piece of dark chocolate; herbal tea; black tea with Splenda; sugar-free Jello or pudding cups. (Mostly when I start to crave sweets, it just means I'm hungry and need to eat something with some complex carbs and fiber to get my blood sugar back up. I don't crave sweets if I've eaten recently -- weird but true.)

Salty: Dry-roasted edamame; fresh steamed edamame; 94% fat free microwave popcorn; a few nuts (almonds, pistachios, walnuts); dill pickles

Creamy: Fage 0% yogurt (you would not believe how amazingly rich and creamy this stuff tastes) with some Splenda and fruit or vanilla extract mixed in; Laughing Cow Light cheese

A chip called Veggie Sticks from Meijers. You can eat quite a few of them for only about 150 calories. They taste like potato chips so they satisfy that crispy and salty craving.

for sweet, crunchy, I eat mini apple cinnamon rice cakes.

Salty, I love the Laughing cow light cheese wedges (3 different flavors).

Also love diet hot chocolate for a chocolate fix. Or many dark chocolate bars.

Sweet- a really high quality, really rich dark chocolate with almonds. Just one piece is all you need. Instead of a whole crappy candy bar.

Salty- I love crunch. Trader Joe's has the flat pretzel crisps that taste like bialys! Just a few crispy, salty, tasty are enough.

100 calorie ice cream sandwhiches or similar are a great treat that I can work into my calorie range

I keep some minitures on a high shelf. They are out of sight and out of the way so I think it thru, but at 50 calories a piece I can have one or two without killing the budget when I really need it.

Carmel rice cakes with peanut butter on them taste decadent but a fairly healthy snack choice.

Vermont Cheddar cheese sticks have a great rich taste that provides some good protein.

I also found a chocolate spice decaf tea that is great and helps get thru end of the day cravings.

I get out a pretty dessert bowl and mix in it 1 TB natural peanut butter, 1 TB unsweetened cocoa with just a tad of sweetener or honey, and about 2 TB water. Stir carefully till smooth and lick my heart out! Sometimes I will add 1/4 c oatmeal.

I haven't really given up anything but have just reduced my portions. That said I really prefer the low fat ice creams and stick to low fat mayo when I use it which is seldom, would rather have mustard on a sandwich and I have low fat sour cream when I use it.
I have never liked butter on my popcorn so I get either the 100 calorie microwave bags or pop on the stove in a small amount of oil.

I've tried and liked several low fat, low cal ice cream treats at Walmart. Skinny Cow, Blue Bunny, etc. I particularly like the vanilla ice cream in a waffle cone with caramel on top. At this moment, I can't think of the brand name.

To be honest, lately I have been just having what I want... that sounds really bad but its not i promise! I haven't been craving my usual sugar rush as much and so when I do, I've given in and had a very small amount.

For example this afternoon I fancied a sweet and I gave myself 1 yes 1!!!! toffee! A while back I would have had to eat the entire pack!!!! I would literally have finished the pack and then felt sick! Today I had my 1 toffee and felt satisfied! Go me!

In terms of what do I keep around the house, it must be fruit- cantaloupe melon, grapes (frozen), plums and pears!

Trader Joes makes these 1 oz servings of dry roasted almonds. They're a bit more spendy than bulk, but great to throw in your purse for when you need a quick snack. I also eat baby carrots with TJ's hummus, peanut butter on some high fiber bread and apples. I'm not a big sweet eater.

The perfect challenge for me today. When I sat down at the computer I was craving my pre-sparkpeople breakfast of a McDonald's Mcgriddle and hashbrowns. I even went online to look at the nutritional info to see if I could sneak it into my calorie count today. Luckily I saw this challenge and it encouraged me to replace it with something better. It think I will have a poached egg on whole wheat toast and a cup of fruit. emoticon

I have substituted weight watches ice cream bars for ice cream - and they are good. I eat fruit instead of candy. I do eat the 100 calorie packs, it is easy to eat just one and - for me - it is a quick fix me up for whatever craving I am having. Get mini bags of M&M's and make the little bags last 2 or 3 days.

I'm proud of the decision I just made for breakfast-- I had some dinner leftovers that were calling to me (Julia Child's Beof Bourginon), but I knew I wanted to each something healthier. Instead, I made a bowl of oatmeal, poured in half a cup of frozen blueberries and just a couple of chocolate chips. The chocolate chips sweetened it and made it feel decadent but they melted so much in the oatmeal that I only needed a few to make it sweet. Yum!

-Bell peppers (when they're really crispy) are a favourite snack. Generally, any crunchy vegetable.
-"Finn Crisp" (a sourdouch crunchy ryebread) with (low-fat) cheese spread.
-Fruit, especially nectarines for some reason.
-Apple butter (which does not contain any butter!) in a small cup. Possibly with some milk on it.

Also, we have a stash of (quality) candy in the fridge. It's placed so that I cannot see it and thus imagin it's not there. However, we'll have a little bit of candy with the evening tea. It keeps me from feeling deprived when eating healthy.

A few of my favorite substitutions for "sweets" are black tea with a little milk and splenda (PG Tips from Cost Plus), one calorie meringues from Trader Joe's, Dark chocolate crisps (trader joe's).

A few other snack foods that get me by include: fruit, Gerber Graduates garden veggie puffs (sounds weird but tastes great), broccoli slaw with ginger dressing, cucumbers with fresh lemon juice and pepper, cucumber sandwiches with Sarah lee delightful ww bread and philadelphia fat free cream cheese.

My new favorite is popping a hanful of kernals of popcorn in a brown paper bag in the microwave. I shred a little bit of aged cheddar cheese over the top and then wash it down with a Mexican Coke.

I am trying to limit the amount of processed foods and HFCS. The Mexican coke is made with sugar instead of HFCS. I work this snack into my calorie range on the week days and then I get a treat without deprivation.

Challenge 10/20/09: emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Happy Tuesday to you!

When you have a craving for those "WATCH OUT" foods, what do you grab as a healthy alternative? You know the ones I mean. It is the end of a long day, and you are craving chocolate. You are sitting at your desk at 4:00pm and are craving something salty and crunchy. What foods have you substituted for the "not so healthy" version?

Your challenge today is to share what healthy snack foods you have incorporated into your lifestyle. These could be: chocolate, salty, creamy, etc.

Feel free to name the manufacturer and where you find these items (i.e. grocery store chain, restaurant, etc.)

We all get stuck in a rut at times by eating the same old items. Trying new foods keeps us going, and it is FUN!

Have a THAT SOUNDS DELICIOUS Tuesday!
