Jeri, good thing you became such fast friends with the pool earlier this year! :D Sending you good wishes for a speedy recovery!

KBAUM, that trail run sounds like fun!

I had a day off from work yesterday - Larry and I went for a 5 mile sunrise walk, then spent a few hours taking care of paperwork at home and then spent all afternoon at the beach. It was HEAVEN!

8 miles this AM! It was 82 at 5:45AM! Gonna go up to 102 today with the heat index; so glad I got my exercise on early!

Good morning!!! I'm waiting for my knee to heal, so it was another swim day for me. This morning wasn't too fast, but it wasn't too slow, either. Just a nice 1,000 yards to start the day.

MBSHAZZER - I agree with you, I think those "rough runs" are great mental training. And once I think of it that way it almost gets easier!

10.5 miles on Saturday with the hubby, beautiful morning run. 5K on Sunday - Mommy vs. Daddy and Daughter. Yes, we are a competitive family! Getting ready to run the Continental Divide Trail Run this weekend. I probably haven't done enough hill training for this, but figure it will be a beautiful run regardless.

More core exercises this morning. My knee is less swollen. It still buckles when I try to walk without my brace. I'm wondering if I can put on my small brace and get on the bicycle. Oh well. I'll wait until my follow-up (the 25th).

KBAUM, I'm with you - I wanted to get my long run in last night but there was a lot of lightning... just not worth it.

Jeri, you will not become a fat blog,, but I can totally relate to your concerns! I think you can actually come back stronger because you will be forced to do exercises that you don't usually do.

13 miles this AM. It was really, really hard. I was exhausted when I got home last night and didn't have very much dinner - just an ear of corn and some green beans. Then I slept late this AM and didn't get on the road till 7am. Fortunately, I had a gel stuck in my water bottle left over from the marathon, but I was definitely HUNGRY. By the end, it was nearly 9am and the last stretch of my run has NO shade. It was a great mental training exercise and not too shabby on the pace, either - averaged 9:11.

I started out with a visit to my coach. He told me while I'm recovering from my knee injury to work my core like I've never worked it before. Isolated leg exercises, and strong upper body. Next week I get to start in the pool every day. I was so emotional this morning, crying and blubbering about turning into a fat blob and losing all my fitness. He assured me I wouldn't.

4 rainy miles for me. Funny how it wasn't raining when I left and unfortunately, I had to cut it short due to lightening getting a bit too close for comfort. But the rainbow in the distance sure made up for it!

Rich, hope your run went well

KBAUM - nice job for your daughter!! My dad was always a runner and when I was your daughter's age, I thought a 5k was some sort of an impossible task (probably due to my dad's huffing and puffing!!)

12 miles for me this AM. Hot and sweaty! And windy! IT band was mostly quiet.

Kbaum, good for you! Definitely brag-worthy accomplishment for your 12 yr old :-)

Yesterday I ran Hatfield-McCoy, and ended up with a fractured tibia and internal derangement of the right knee. The internal derangement is suspected acl tear. I have to wait until I see the ortho in order to get that checked out. They don't do MRIs in the ER. The ortho consult guy said his office would call with an appointment for me. Even though I didn't get to finish the full, I did manage to hobble across the half finish line in 3:28:36 (slowest half ever, but I guess my fastest half with a broken leg, so yeah, kinda a PR). I had about a bazillion people ask me if I needed a ride. No, I was going to get across a finish line on my own two feet. The last two miles took me an hour and 15 minutes. As it turns out, I have bone demineralization in my knee that wasn't there two years ago (osteoporosis), and that's what happened. AND... I got home yesterday after the race and the ER visit, and my husband dropped and broke my favorite coffee cup -- the one that has Lucy and her Vitameatavegamin commercial (the one for happy, peppy people. If you don't know it, google it. Funny show). I had to order a new one. And this morning, I found out that when I got a ride back to the finish line, the mat was super sensitive because I didn't go anywhere near it, and it picked up my time and had me finishing 2nd in my AG in 4:20:06. All I did was hobble down the sidewalk and sit in the spectator chairs! I e-mailed the race director's wife and told her to correct that. I'm sure the lady who actually took 2nd would like to know. Now I'm wearing a great big ugly knee brace, and I've got crutches. I can swim later this week, when I feel like hobbling down the hallway of the Y to get to the pool. I can only bike if I can wear my brace (not gonna happen). And I can't run. Boo hiss. I'm going to be one crabby person.

She woke up one morning and threw away all her excuses...

KBaumann, welcome! I see you picked a great one for your first marathon. Not that I've run it, but I'm certain that ANY marathon in Hawai'i must be AMAZING!!! Enjoy your training!

Striver, my folks have a rails to trails trail near where they live in AZ and it's the best! I love running there when I visit them.

Ail, didn't realize you were in Japan. You always travel to such neat places.

Woke up early this AM and thought I'd get some extra mileage in. Not to be.... we were feeling the outer bands of Tropical Storm Andrea this AM. Super windy with tornado warnings.

So, I used the Bowflex for about 30 minutes, then I groomed the cats and finally I braved the outdoors. HA! I did a 3 mile round trip in tropical storm force winds! Not very productive!

I am training for my first marathon!! Ive only been running for 2 years and really enjoy the training period. I'm headed into Week 4 and my first recovery week. I had a great tempo run today with the second mile being even faster than the first mile. I love having great runs like that. So 6 total miles today and looking forward to running the Helena's Governor's Cup with my 7 year old daughter on Saturday!

In the US today was "National Running Day". I went to a railroad bed that has been converted to a paved fitness trail in Vestal NY. It is only two miles long, but well maintained, pretty, with wide flat grass covered shoulders, and it has restrooms at each end. The weather was perfect and there were many different forms of locomotion going on. I parked at one end and ran to the other and back while Judith (DW) biked it a few times. I saw walkers, runners, young and old wheelchair users, skateboarders, cyclists, and kids on tricycles and in strollers. I did not see one example of bad etiquette, one piece of litter, or even an accidental instance of two people trying to use the same space. It was really quite amazing. Without any written instruction everyone stayed to the right. Strangers communicated directional intent and good will. Slower users seemed to drift out of the way of the more enthusiastic with only ESP to guide them.

A couple miles from home, I turned the car over to Judith and ran the rest of the way to get in a total of 10K for the day. The only negative was that I broke my June streak of both running and cycling every day. I'll start again tomorrow.

6 miles. Did speedwork for the first time in 6 months. Wow, am I out of shape. 2 mile warm up, then I did a few 800's with 400m recovery; then had to drop down to 400's with 400m recovery. 1 mile cool down.

90% humidity didn't help!

Jeri, I know you have history with the bike... so kudos to you for getting back on it!

Rich, sorry to hear, but it has happened to all of us at one time or another... sometimes it's better to pull the plug. I remember I once *tried* *running* a half marathon in hot humid conditions not long after giving blood. HA!

Had terrible insomnia on Sunday night so I took Monday as a rest day. Can't exercise on less than 5 hours of sleep.

I did get a solid 8 hours in last night and ran 6 miles this AM.

Larry is in Yosemite for 2 weeks and I am working full time AND managing our 20+ rental properties in his absence. 3 new tenants moved in over the weekend, one of our handymen got a "real" job and quit in the middle of a job he was doing for us, had a fridge die, an AC leak and cause extensive damage to floors and walls.... so yeah. I'm busy! :D Larry is a lucky man that I was home to handle all this stuff!

6 windy and RAINY miles this AM. The wind lately is incredible! I don't know what's going on!

Anyway, I will not be running tomorrow as I am taking Larry to the airport - he is spending 10 days in Yosemite. Very jealous!

I hit 135 miles in May! Ordinarily, I would be disappointed with that mileage, but given all of the stress and issues I have had this year, I am thrilled that I made it over 100 finally!!!

Rich, maybe it's good to have a real taper and rest that foot.
Sharon, windy running is better than no running! I'm glad you are feeling better.
I had great core workout and then ran 3 miles on treadmill.
