I only watched a couple of minutes of it today. I had heard about it, just never watched it. I just couldn't believe it. I just don't understand how the kids and/or the parents could let things get that bad. I am way overweight now, but in high school I wasn't really overweight, probably a little, but I just don't understand how a 17yr old girl can be over 500lbs, what the heck was going on.

I do get mad though, because my daughter is considered overweight, according to the charts. The doctor is not concerned, and here's why. She is 3 1/2 years old and 40lbs. She gains 1-2, maybe 3 lbs a year. So, for her age, she is overweight, but she is also 39 inches, which puts her height quite a bit taller. If she was 4 1/2 her height and weight would be just find, so the fact that my kid is really tall for her age and well porpotate is ok. And actually she is only in the 80%, but if you are over 75% you are considered overweight. My kid doesn't eat meat, tons of fruit and veggies, and loves her chicken nuggets, but she is also running around like a crazy person for most of the time that she is awake. She makes people tired just watching her. So, standards they have made of kids should be reajusted, but allowing your teenager to become that overweight is the child and parents fault.

I guess I'm the odd one out here. I watched the first episode of the show on demand, but have no intention of watching any of the others. To me, it felt very exploitative and faintly mocking of the challenges the kids face. What's next, a show about 15 YO kids suffering from bulimia?

As far as adult 'fat camps', I wouldn't go. can see why such a camp would be appealing to some folks, in part because it is a less threatening, non-judgemental environment, but for me personally it seems like a waste of money. I know how I should eat, even though I don't always do so and my ego is tough enough that I feel comfortable doing aerobics at the local rec center and swimming at the local beach. No need to be surrounded by 300 lbs+ people like myself to make it work. *shrug* To each his/her own...

Both my parents had addictions, My father an alcoholic my mother a compulsive eater and spender guess which one I took after? I would of killed to have been an alcoholic. I do believe that the compulsive personality is inherited and I feel that some parents do not know what a compulsive personality is or how to handle it. Thank God there are places like OA, AA, GA, NA, where we all can get help but unfortinatly we do not find these places till me are adults.

I really don't know how I feel about more PE in schools. On one hand, yes, it's excellent to make physical fitness a priority, but on the other hand, I wouldn't wish my personal experiences with PE classes on my worst enemy! I agree that an actual nutrition course could be extremely beneficial. I find that the more I learn about nutrition itself, the biology of it, the better I do and the better choices I make. More recess is great for little kids, but when I was in high school, I would have loved like an "independent study" type class. You can take these courses online now through a lot of community colleges. A lot of it is on the honor system, but most have an end-of-course in-person challenge, such as a timed race. I'd like to use that type of personalized course for "high risk" kids like me. If you had thrown me in a PE course in high school, no exaggeration, I probably would have killed myself. I had a bad enough time with self-esteem issues. Being made fun of in PE wouldn't have helped one single bit.

Also, I think when you start throwing around blame and charging parents with child abuse or child neglect, you start down a very slippery slope. How fat is criminally fat? And who has a right to tell you what to feed your child? Do you fine Mom or throw Mom in jail when her kid is 100 pounds overweight? 50? 30? Why not nip in the bud early and punish them for being 10 pounds overweight, send a strong message. And then what does that kid do? You want to throw him in foster care? Create more instability for that child? Please. Instead of focusing on who to blame or punish, let's get more creative about solutions. The local crusades to fix school lunch systems are a great way to start! More non-competitive (non-UIL) sports would be a great idea, too. And more education!

You can watch the BBC story of Georgia Davis if you search for "Too Fat for 15" on Youtube. It's quite inspiring.

I have to agree with her about whose fault it is. It's not really anyone's. It just happens. Food starts out as an invisible addiction, and parents try to do something when they see their child has become too big, but by then the bad food habits are ingrained. They try their best to fix things, but they usually fail because they don't really know how to deal with the problem.

I understand that not all families can afford the healthiest food. BUT! Portion CONTROL IS VERY IMPORTANT. You can really eat anything and loose weight as long as you follow the portion guild lines

Yes I like the show. I really feel for those kids I can see myself in them.

I think that teaching the kids about nutrition is a good way to make a difference in their lives. For a lot of people know what is good for you and what is bad for you but if you actually show them that eating a slice of pizza could equal a whole lot more healthy food calories wise makes a big impact. Gym class are a good and bad thing. The good is that participating helps you with your health. The bad is that it could make you feel worse about yourself because when your overweight as a kid and your not able to do what the rest of your class can do makes you feel horrible.

Parents are just one of many factors in their child obesity. The parents might not know that they are doing anything wrong. I also know that healthy food is more expensive than the food that is bad for you, so they just might not be able to give them the food that they need.

i really like this show.. it really hits home because i was an overweight teenager and it breaks my heart to see these kids go through it. But i am so proud of them for trying to make the changes they need to to become healthy.

I saw the commercials and really want to see that. I'm going to look for it On Demand.

Now, as far as school lunches go - I've worked in the school cafeteria for a high school in IN and we has strict guidelines for the lunch lines - they were very much in line with x amount of calories, sodium, fiber, etc per meal and we absolutely had to follow those guidelines. There were 7 different lines to choose from (international cuisine, home cooking, pasta, salad bar, sub bar, etc. but you do still have some a la carte choices (pretzels, chips, pop tarts) so that was the down side (but they did rid of all fried foods, candy bars and other junk stuff). But, I gotta say, I've seen a lot of home packed lunches for high schoolers and for elementary kids and many times they are full of junk food. I really make it a point to pack healthy food for lunch - but the trick is to pack something that doesn't spoil!

My son's school had a whole program on teaching kids about being active and about nutrition - so I think schools are working on these areas (and doing so with budget cuts). But we need to be responsible to teach them at home as well.

Okay, that's my 2 cents - not worth much emoticon .

Sparkles just remember this is a forever lifestyle change. Sometimes we have a number we reach then forget we need to maintain it and it starts to creep back, it is up to us to remember this is a forever change, we can have somethings once and while but not daily. I hear keeping the weight off is just as hard to take it off.

I have been big all my life and my mother was big and she had problems and heart problem and other health problems. My father who never weighted over 150 had great health. I am over 300 lbs and I am wider than I am tall just had a physical with the doctor and he was very pleased with all my numbers I inherited my mothers size but my fathers health.I am almost 58 years old I wish I would of inherited my fathers blue eyes and his metabolism. I do believe I do have this fat gene I can loose weight and fast but I wind up back at the same size. I have done it 3 times and I don't want to give up so I keep trying .

Oh! I agree about the schools and with the kids today getting so hyper with the sugar. The less sugar the child takes in sugar, they will be easier to teach. Maybe they will not need some of the drugs to settle them down. it just hurts me so bad to see such overweight kids.

I have watched the show and it breaks my heart. My son is struggling with his weight because from the time he was 2 he was on steroids to control severe asthma and the Dr's told me it was deal with a weight issue or the breathing. I chose the weight and even though my son is as active as his friends he is obese. I monitor everything in our house and even have him workout with me sometimes but I still wonder if I made the right decision when he was 2.

I have to say that I do have to place some of the blame on the parents, but they need education as well as to how to deal with it. I know many obese children have obese parents as well - how can you teach your kid to do right if you don't know what right is for yourself?

That being said, I think there has been a really great positive push as far as healthy lunches are concerned. I remember ordering chicken nuggets or a double chocolate chip muffin FOR LUNCH in high school. I visited my kids at school one day last year (I did a blog about it) and found that they've switched to a whole wheat bread, they're offering veggies instead of tator tots and french fries, and they're giving kids no option but to eat right (unless they pack their lunches). Of course, this is an elementary school...not sure what the high schools are doing.

I have learned that our county has taken all soda machines out of the schools! They get a few points from me for that!!

I agree with teaching kids the importance of understanding how their body's work as far as nutrition and PE when combined together how they will benefit, plus if they feel good about themselves you haveone the emotional side of things so you are building a wellrounded child to hopefully keep them from the obesity pitfall!

I felt so bad for the young girl to weighs over 500 lbs. I hope this works for her because if she keeps on the path she is on, she will weigh in the 1000's by the time she is an adult and yes I do blame the parents. I am 57 years old and I was over 300 lbs when I was a teenager and I am still the same and I am having a hard time with my weight. I just broke my computer chair I grew out of it I got so wide I busted the arms and if it would of given out on me I would of never of gotten up off the floor A friend of mine got be a wider one. Do you know how that makes me feel when he said, this has a wider seat for you. I felt so ashamed. I try so hard to control my food and I am just having a hard time of it. BUT! I keep trying

It breaks my heart! I was obese most of my life, but not like these kids you mentioned. I was in the 200's in middle school. I do blame the parents. I don't think it's child abuse because some parents don't know better, and there is also a fat gene, so it's partially hereditary. I was adopted and my whole family is skinny. My mom took me to doctors and nutritionists and they all said the same thing: she'll grow into it. They never told her how to cook, or what to feed me - and my mom was a southern cook, so even the green beans had bacon in them!

I wish I had known then what I know now, but the same can be said for anything. A long time ago, I worked at Target and I checked out a little girl and her mother who were buying clothes. The girl looked at her mom and said she's too young to have to wear size 18's. I almost started crying.

I think PE should be coupled with nutrition class nowadays to teach kids not just how exercise is important, but how nutrition is important. When I was in PE, I hated it. I didn't want to be active because it didn't feel good, and I swear, I never even thought that if I worked out I'd lose weight. All I knew was that I didn't want to. If I knew and understood how it would help me, I would have at least tried.

YES! Their parents can be blamed 100%!

I keep seeing ads (photo not video) of one boy from the knees down and how his tennis shoes are turned to the outside because of his weight. Soooo sad!

I saw it a while back when it was just a one hour special and liked it but now I don't get the Style Network anymore for some reason. (I really miss seeing Ruby:) I keep forgetting to call the cable company.

Ann - I really agree with you! I grew up in California (like Leah) and we had all sorts of play and sport times. The government (Obama's wife and prior administrations) is spending so much time (and money) on education about nutrition. Why don't they put the effort and time in to more sports / phys ed?

I figure those who care about nutrition all ready know about it and those that don't, don't care. Waste of money.

Yes I'd go to Fat Camp. (If I could afford it that is:) But first I'd have to go to a Pre-Fat Camp just to get in shape! LOL!

Hey FairyAnne, I agree. I grew up in California and when I was a kid we had PE daily-kindergarten thru high school. Then when my kids were in school they had PE in elementary school everyday and then in high school they only had to have 4 semesters within the 4 years. My younger daughter was very athletic (still is) and she was on the swim team 3 out of 4 years. I really wish they would make it a requirement to have PE daily regardless of grade level. Recess was always my favorite part to the day.

I believe the parents are at fault for a lot of their children's obesity. Junk snacks are ok for a treat now and then but healthy snacks should be the norm. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Yes I have been watching it. Very sad, you can tell these kids are in a lot of pain, mental and physical.

I was born in England and went through the school system, and we had lots of physical stuff. PE, swim at the local pool. Teams for different sports. Netball, ruby, soccer etc. We also walked to school and home, no matter the weather! We had a 20 min break in the am and we were kicked out of the building into the play ground. Lunch break was about hour and half. Older grades could walk home for lunch, if they had permission. Other than that we had lunch and then back out in the playground. Another break in the pm. 20 mins. back out in the playground. We had teacher monitors for the breaks and then a teacher and a special lady that came in for the lunch breaks.

My kids grew up in Canada and they had the same day except the kids were not allowed to walk home for lunch!

I know that it is our duty to raise our kids but I think that education on nutrition, how to be respectful of money and learning to save. How to balance a check book and do a budget ARE necessities of life! (Sorry I have a passion in this area. emoticon )
AND a huge failing grade for the school lunches!

Thank you, I will now get off my soap box......sorry !! LOL

Watching salt intake also trying not to buy foods that have high fructose corn syrup, sugar, rice syrup, corn syrup, fructose, sucrose etc. in the first three ingredients.

No foods that have more than 3 ingredients that I can not pronounce.

If an item has more than 10 ingredients I put it on the Do Not Buy List as it is too processed.

There are fat camps for adults but they cost 1500-2000+ for a week go figure, most of us can't afford that and insurance doesn't even cover it. I will recomment TOPS (take off pounds sensibly clubs) www.tops.org they do annual retreats that are cheaper 300 plus airfare to get closest one to you...

I think it is sad that we have such obesity issues for kids... We need to keep PE in schools--gradeschool through high school and also re do school lunches. Tater tots, Pizza and fries are not a food group.

Woo I want to watch that. Hmmm. Maybe i can get it on demand.

On a personal note, I have a 4 year old and she is already obese for her age. I am to blame for it. And I know it. She is the second reason that I am doing this (first is me). I have taught her in her 4 young years how to eat, how not to get up and move! But the changes are already starting to take change. As i reach for veggies, or fruit for a snack so is she. And I change my portion size so does she. She is imitating me and now i'm paying attention to that.

I love camp I'd go!!

It's a new show on Style Network and it's documents the lives of 4 obese teenagers at a "fat camp". Has anyone seen it? One girl is 17 and started at 510 pounds. Her family thought she was just 425 (as if that makes it better). There's also a 13 year old boy who started at 366 pounds. My heart goes out to those kids. I wonder how much their parents can be blamed for their levels of obesity.

Anyway, I wish there was a fat camp for adults... I'd go, would you?

Doing what I have to do so that I can do what I want to do!
