I wish I had a Nu-step at home! It's a cross trainer recumbent bike. Here's a link to their website

I really need to become more committed to my exercise at home. I did order some resistance bands and ankle weights so I'm planning on using them.

PT had me sweating last night! I love that the exercises he's giving me are ones that I can do at home. I'm going to get some therapy/resistance bands and ankle weights. I'm also doing calf stretches and using the Nu-Step recumbent bike (which makes my knees feel soooo weird when I'm pedaling because of the scrunch scrunch of the bone on bone.)

I found a few of these exercises on here:

Standing Abduction

Calf Stretch

A variation of this one - keep one foot planted on the step and bring the other foot up and then down for a set of 5 steps. Repeat with other leg

Seated leg extensions - doing this one without the resistance band right now www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercis

Two PT sessions down! Have my home exercises to do and he has me doing some different ones at the clinic. Some of which I can do here at home too. So I think I'll be doing those too....it was tough on the NuStep machine because of the grinding feeling of the knees but I kept with it for the 6 minutes he had me on there. I go back again Monday and Thursday next week.
And then for 2 more weeks after that.

Thanks for the encouragement and suggestions! I greatly appreciate them! I will continue to move as much as I can because not only do I want an easy surgery and recovery, I really want to go into it all weighing much less than I do now. I have to lose 180# before the surgery can be scheduled. It's going to be a while but I will get there!.

I've had both of my knees replaced. The first one was bone on bone and hurt so bad. It's extremely important to do the exercises before and after. The hospital I had surgery at has a floor just for knee and hip replacement patients. They had a board hanging on the wall with all of the patients names for that week and for every so many feet we walked we moved forward on the board, it was kind of a competition, it also showed after walking so many steps which landmark in the city we had reached. We did group PT twice a day. We cheered each other on and it turned out to be fun. We were also allowed to have a "coach" which is a family member that goes to PT and walks the halls with you. I think all of the encouragment and support I got was a huge help to my recovery. I recommend pushing yourself, if you are to do 10 repititions of something try and do 12 and walk, walk, walk. It's so worth it in the end. It's a long process but you'll be glad you had it done.

Sonia is right...do the exercises prescribed by a physical therapist for those who just had a knee replacement done. I didn't do any exercises before, or much after, and as a result, my knees aren't functioning much better than before the operations, though the pain is somewhat diminished.

Netter - I really wish I had lost a lot more weight before I had my knee replacement. I lost 20 but quit smoking for recovery reasons and became a couch potato (because after therapy, you have nothing else in you) after surgery. I have gained all of it back. Now I feel like I am restarting but I wouldn't change the quitting smoking at all and one day the knee surgery will be worth all of it.

The exercises really do a lot more than you would think and use those muscles. Doing them a year ahead of time will make a HUGE difference in your recovery process.

Dusty - do you have some videos/DVD's of chair dancing that you like?

MermaidLife and Wildrainbowpie - I use those videos too!

Randy - can you redo the link for your exercises? It didn't work.....

I had my appointment with PT yesterday so I have some strengthening exercises to do each day now to help get the muscles around the knees back in shape. My right knee is achy but I will get through! I want to walk, stand, sit and get back up with ease! The process won't be complete until the knee surgery - which is at least a year away - but I can darn sure get into the best shape possible to aid in a faster recovery - and allow for some more mobility until then.

I am just coming out of an arthritis flare up of my knees and spent nearly all the summer on crutches. My weight also gives me back pain so I have to sit to do most things (like putting away groceries or cleaning down low).

I use Spark.tv for now. I do the chair videos already posted here that Coach Nicole does and also there are some yoga in a chair ones by another trainer I use. I just search for videos that are 6-12 minutes long and for equipment I choose "chair".

I will note that sometimes the cardio ones I will have to modify because I won't be able to lift a knee or turn it a certain way. It seems silly working out in a chair, but it really does the job!

On SparkPeople.tv, there are some really great videos from Coach Nicole...

12-Minute Core

9-Minute Arms

20-Minute Resistance Bands

I have these all added to my favorites. Just ordered some resistance bands, but even without the equipment, they're good moves. A couple of these (the arms, for sure) require dumbbells, but a couple cans of soup will work, too!

It's next to impossible for me to do anything, certain movements, especially if
repetitive cause me issues. If I reach for something I can pull vertebrae out of
place or pull a muscle. I have learned to sit on the edge of a chair to clean the
bottom shelf of the refrigerator, (my back is super bad) and this seems to take
the stress off. I can only stand a short time ( a minute or two if that.) Somebody
came to the door yesterday and I felt like I looked like a nervous rabbit, such
pacing while they talked but I thought I was going to fall.....

But, I am so thankful I can "walk" to the bathroom, and "walk" to the kitchen and
do dishes if I lean on the sink to hold me up. I am so thankful I can sit, even if
it is leaning some, rather than lay in bed, I am so thankful I can see what goes
on around me, and hear the laughter of children and and the singing of birds.

I am so very thankful for all of you who brighten my day, who share your woes
and help me to see I am not the only one who is in this shape. I love seeing how
each of you encourage someone else, I love rejoicing with each of you who loses
a pound or two, or be sad with those who struggle and their weight goes up and
down (like me.) I try so hard not to give advice, yet I do, because I think, what if,
what if just this time this is what this person needs, what "if" my stupid advice
gives them a leg up, what if this could be the key that will help them to lose the
weight? So I give the advice.....

Okay, said too much already,....but....I love you guys. emoticon

Netter-

Having just had the knee replacement in April: My advice to you is to follow the exercises for knee surgery patients (pre-operative). Here is a printable example:

http://www.orthoassociates.com/_pdfs/kel
ly_280preop_knee.pdf

I'm telling you while it doesn't seem like much, you really will feel it the next day and the more you do them now when you have surgery, the easier it will be! Some of these I am sure the Physical Therapist will give you also.

For cardio - I know you can't walk much, but a stationary bike (I just use one of those $30 sit in your chair type) will help with cardio AND your knees. Pull it in closer to you as your knees loosen up when doing it.

I have a Gentle Tai Chi DVD that I really like that can be done sitting down. It doesn't seem like a ton of exercise, but I can always feel it the next day, so must be using some muscles I don't usually.

My knees are crappy, too, so I usually try to do some water walking at the gym. When I go in the deep end of the pool & just "float", where all the pressure is off my knees...it's heavenly!

I had a Dr's appointment today, so am feeling extra motivated to try to move my body more. She always wants to talk about WL surgery, but knows I'll shut her down! I know too many people who haven't made the necessary changes & gain weight back after the surgery.

Hope the PT is helpful for you. Please share any knee-strengthening exercises you learn.

I'm thinking that some of you, like me, have some mobility issues when it comes to exercising. Right now, I can't stand for any length of time because my knees won't cooperate. (Need both knees replaced but can't have the surgery until I lose the weight).

I can walk a little bit but not for very long. I've been doing some upper body exercises but need some additional sources. I'll be starting physical therapy next week for a few weeks to help strengthen my knees and surrounding area.

Do you have some favorite exercises that don't include standing or anything that stresses the knee? Have you found a standing exercise but modified it for sitting? what are some of your choices? I'm still looking through the videos here and searching the internet but thought I ask you too!
