HICKOK-HENLEY, Sorry to not have responded to your lovely post talking about Houndahoula Henley! I will try to reply as soon as I can. Things are still pretty hectic here in NorCal.

LAURETTA, glad to hear from you on this thread, too! Do I spy a Norwegian Elkhound in your photos?!?!? One of my very favorite breeds. I have had several. I'll have to see if I can scare up a few pics of them. Soon as I can!

For now, I want to share some pics that I recently sent to our area's Animal Disaster Group rescue team, who has been out rescuing animals from the large wildfires nearby:

The very evening that this young dog was rescued by heroic NVADG volunteers, we brought her home to help care for her, and have since adopted her! We named her EMBER. I saw this beautiful, heart-touching photo of her rescue in an IFAW/NVADG post on Facebook, and I just want to tell you the “rest of the story”.

A week after the Camp Fire wildfire had swept through the Magalia/Concow area in November 2018, NVADG brought this young Border Collie that they rescued from that area to the VCA Veterinary Center in Chico. The owners of this dog were ID’d, but they had just lost their home to the fire and were in no position to care for this badly injured dog, so they surrendered her and begged the folks at VCA to help save her. A veterinarian who knew that we had fostered several dogs for the NCBCRA (Northern California Border Collie Rescue and Adoption) called us – in tears! – and asked if we could help to save this young dog!

After NVADG rescued her, NCBCRA (Northern California Border Collie Rescue and Adoption) stepped up as the next rescue agency helping this young dog. We went to VCA (Valley Oak Veterinary Center, Chico) to pick her up. She had big bandages on her paws and was definitely traumatized. Along with other medications and treatments, we gave her a rawhide chew and this was a wonderful “pacifier” for her! Chewing on a rawhide definitely soothed her!

As her burns healed, she started looking to our other Border Collie (Liam, another NCBCRA rescue), for cues about how to behave. Although Liam is several years older than Ember, he has been an absolute champ about playing and tussling with her, and guiding her to become part of the pack. He has also taught her some bad manners (Liam’s nickname is “Sir Barksalot”) but, all things considered, he has been a wonderful “big brother” to Ember.

Ember is now twice the weight that she was when rescued, and also has grown her singed fur out to have a luxurious, full rough coat and beautiful banner tail. She is very affectionate and has earned the nickname “Sass Box” because of her playful spirit.

Many, many thanks and blessings to all of the folks at NVADG/IFAW, VCA Valley Oak Veterinary Clinic, and Northern California Border Collie Rescue and Adoption who have helped to save this little girl’s life!

I'll be back! So nice to read your posts and see your delightful pics!!!

I used to have my own pet sitting etc. business too for 10 yrs. I had so much fun. My last client, who became a friend, moved 2 years ago. After that I closed my book of adventures. I didn't board though. I'm glad you decided to go into the business. I hope you can get back to normal. The virus has put a dent into everyone's living, and earnings. Putting out flyers is a great idea. Fingers crossed!

Living in So. Calif our trees don't start to change colors until next month. Years ago my Daughter and I took a trip to Calgary in the Fall. What a beautiful drive. How was your visit with your Son?

p.s. I love the GR

I'm with you. If I re-build a home I would take every precaution. Fire resistant plants, the works.
Fingers crossed for your family member. It has been a bad year for the west. I have read where So. Calif. is going to be dry this winter. Bummer. But No. Calif. will get more rain then last year. Good news for you. My Hubby and I couldn't sleep last night so we decided to sit out in our backyard around midnight. We actually saw a few stars. Due to the smoke, we haven't seen stars for a while. Then today we could smell smoke again. The Bobcat fire is burning near Juniper Hills, which is about 18 miles from us. Our home is safe, but just goes to show how fast fires can burn. The fire started in the San Gabriel area (Monrovia) and that is 56 mi. from here. I feel so bad for the wild life. Onward to a nicer subject. My dander gets going with the fires near me, as they were not started by lightening.

Bloodhounds are fun. Very different from all of the other breeds we have had. Most of them mixed breeds. Guess I will start with Henley. Henley was actually a Bloodahoula Hound. That is 3/4 Bloodhound, and 1/4 Catahoula Hound. That breed (not recognized yet) should be about 10-20 pds lighter then a Bloodhound, and not as tall or bulky. They aren't supposed to drool. Well, Henley broke all of the rules. He was just as tall as Cherokee. In Henley's prime he weighed 105 .Dropped down to 99 pds. in his senior years. He drooled big time lol.
He was the cutest puppy.

He loved plants. He would stand with his head in one of our rose bushes, Sunflowers, and just stand there with his head in the middle of the plant. Here he is with our Garlic Plant. You would think that would stink, but he didn't mind.

He hated our pool while Sarge, and Alice loved to swim. I so miss the other dogs we had, but sadly they just don't live a long time like we do. Tomorrow I will tell you a bit about Cherokee Rose.

Yeah, I live near the NorCal town of Paradise that was destroyed by the Camp Fire in late 2018. We didn't have to evacuate, but some relatives' homes burned and they lived with us until just a couple of months ago. Hopefully, the first house they just built won't burn down... they really did not learn the lesson about building with fire safety and defensible space precautions... I and other family members really tried to talk to them about this, but they were set in thinking that the Camp Fire was a "once in a century" event. Sigh.

Here we are again with the newest record-breaking California wildfire! And not just here but there in SoCal, as you are at least somewhat experiencing, and also into Oregon and Washington! Sigh, again.
Thanks for the emoticon ! They are much appreciated! I have been feeling very stressed out and anxious.

I love your tale about how your bloodhound turned out to have allergies and sensitivities! Certainly not the best candidate for rescue work, lol! There's something very companionable about bloodhounds that I like. Is there some special bit of affection that they really like? Ear massages? Jowl rubs? Inquiring minds want to know!

Do you live in Colorado? No Calif? I can't remember if you mentioned.
Last night smoke started drifting our way again. Still here. The sky looks horrible, doesn't it? Better to keep our pups safe, then sorry. That is so funny about the skeleton. Former med student? lol. Glad it wasn't human bones anyway. No, we didn't train out dogs. I thought about training the first Bloodhound mix we had. We bought him from the same gal we bought our Bloodhounds from. I have RA and I wasn't sure my feet would hold up for searching, so I decided to pass on the idea. Good decision, as Henley ended up with outdoor allergies, and food allergies. So he wouldn't have been a good candidate for that type of job. Stay safe, and keep well. emoticon

And now we once again have wildfires exploding and making the Camp Fire look like... well, a campfire. The air quality is very hazardous, so we are not walking the dogs. They don't seem to mind much, and seem to like being in the rooms that have the best air purifiers and air filters keeping the air reasonably clean. I'm working on making some face masks for the dogs, maybe not for short walks, but if we have to evacuate I'm sure we will have to drive through some extremely smoky, hazardous conditions and I would like to protect them, too.

A kind of entertaining story in a macabre way, rescue crews at the nearest fire found a human skeleton in a burned shed and thought it was a fire fatality. Turned out it was an anatomical skeleton - like they have in medical schools - doh! (Don't know what it was doing in somebody's backwoods shed, but maybe that's another story!)

I have always had huge appreciation for dogs trained in various kinds of search and rescue work! Do your floppy-eared pups have any special training aside from being very good listeners?

"Sass Box" is beautiful. Love that name lol. Poor baby at the beginning. I'm so glad she pulled through. That fire was awful. The gal we got our Bloodhounds from does search & rescue. She went up there with one of her dogs looking for human bones. Luckily, they found none. Most dogs can bounce back big time. Ember has a strong will. emoticon

Ah yes, HICKOK-HALEY, it would be nice to have a doctor in the pack! Hahaha! I loved reading your brief recount of the BCs that you have exercised/puppy sat and loved!

Hopefully, our new team member LAURETTA will also share some sweet memories of pups that she has known!

Ember came to us as a rescue from the Camp Fire wildfire, here in California, in late 2018. She was only a few months old, pretty feral, burned on her paws and body and very traumatized. She was super shy and squirrely and a total super freak. But, from the start, she would snuggle up tight to me on the bed at night and, yes, give me ear inspections. She has grown to be a very sweet girl, has earned the nickname “Sass Box” and walks around with this adorable smile that kind of reminds me of Jack Nicholson…

I love Border Collies. I exercised/pet sat for two for 10 yrs. Sadly both dogs have passed, so I no longer see them, but I have a lot of special memories. Especially with Huck. I loved him as much as I love my own dogs.

If Ember gets her degree for ear, nose & throat, she can keep you in style.

Lauretta, it's so delightful that you have your grand-kids helping out with the dog-walking! They look happy, and they're getting a really great experience doing this.

Hickok-Haley, I can't believe that I missed seeing the pics of your pack! I would love to sit down on the porch step an have a long conversation with those big, floppy-eared characters. And Emma looks like a real love! I can believe she would heal a broken heart! I have had a couple of dogs who performed that little miracle for me. My newest Border Collie pup, Ember, aspires to be a nurse and will administer a thousand hot puppy kisses to any scratch or cut that she finds on my arms or legs. However, her true aspiration is to be an ear, nose and throat doctor, as she loves to perform invasive inspections of people's ears, etc. It's pretty hilarious.

That's so sad. Especially at 8 years. We have had to say goodbye to 4 dogs in the last 4 years. The last dog Munchie 2 months ago. They were all somewhat close in age. It's hard. Just take a day at a time, and remember the good times.

Oh my goodness. We have a diabetic dog. When I was going to give him his insulin injection, this morning, he moved abruptly and I accidentally stuck the needle into my hand and injected myself. (I'm not diabetic, myself.)

I started feeling shaky, and quickly ate some fruit and some honey to get glucose into my system. That helped. However, I have been restricting carbohydrates and am in moderate ketosis, so this sudden influx of sugar has my body all in an uproar. My brain is trying to have a monster headache. Bleah!

When I did an online search on "accidentally injected dog insulin," I at least was comforted to find out that I'm not the only one who has done this! There is a woman who has a business helping people who have pets with health problems. Here clients with diabetic dogs were reporting accidental jabs often enough that she routinely includes information about what to do about accidental needle jabs and injections to any client who has to administer a shot to a pet!

We have a cat that my hubby rescued form a parking lot. Someone had left her in the parking lot and she was not even winged yet. I have had her for almost 2 years. She loves to go out and run the yard but she loves to set on my chest. But my Onyx is so jealous of her and chases her when I take Onyx out to the bathroom. So does anyone have a tip to get my girls to get a long better?

Hi there @TLARNOLD1974
If you still need advice regarding your "7 month old high drive walker" that pulls you along instead of walking nicely, I'd be happy to offer some suggestions. Think I'll start a new thread so we don't hijack the daily chat thread.

I had pt today and found out that my core is very week. That is what is causing my problem with my hip. So I need to do a lot of strength training on my core. I also need to keep up my walking because it will help as well. Hope you all are having a good day.

Dose any one have any tips on training your dog to walk with you and not drag you along. I have always had dogs that are easy going but my Onyx is very hyper and wants to go, go, go. I'm hoping when I get her fixed that will help some. She is about 7 months old.

It's been so bitterly cold here that my poor dog keeps getting short walks and then I rush off to the gym to run on the treadmill.

But now it's warming up just enough that we've ventured outside for a run. She loves it.

I took Sadie for a walk on a busy trail today for socializing. She did pretty good.

Sadie is doing well. Her overbite is going to need a Specialist, but I new it was bad when I picked her up!

The walk sounds fun.

Sadie was spayed today. She had the cone off within a couple of minutes when we got home. We changed to the Tee method.

She looks good in pink!

I just signed up for WALK WOOF WAG, an annual 5K walking event, dogs welcome. It's put on by our local Humane Society shelter, and is such a cool event. There is even a group of college students who walk some of the shelter dogs in the event. The walk will take place this weekend.

I especially love this year's poster, because my god-dog-son Miles has just that lovably goofy one ear up and one ear down look.

There have been a few days lately that are just getting a little warmer and the dog wants to quit or slows down, but then yesterday was perfect--just cold enough that she was ready to go out again after we had already done 8.5 miles.

Living in the high desert we walk our dogs either early morning, or evening.

In any sort of warmer weather, I have to walk the Spaniels early. They are fine with rain or snow, but anything near 70 & it's no go. So *early*.

I've had 3 Bassets who have all seemed to be part lizard so heat is fine. :-)

I'm in awe of being able to do that distance though! emoticon

It is fun! Although rest days like today when we just do a short walk are nice, too,

Yesterday was 8 miles. I only took the dog for half the run and it was sunny and just a little too hot for her. It was the first time she's ever trailed behind me on a run. I'll have to be more careful when we go later in the day.

We ran along city streets and a running trail today--about 2/3 on the streets and 1/3 on the trail. Felt good today. The dog is a huge fan.

I like walking in our hills, but on windy days that can't happen, so either walk around the block, or at a store.

The dog was sad that we only did a 10 minute walk this morning--but we'll make up for it tomorrow.

How is everyone doing? Do you have a particular route you like to take when you walk your dogs or do you change it up? I tend to do the same few routes, but it's nice to change it up.
