Has anyone ever tried brewers yeast in replacement of the protein and the flax? I ask because I am so tired of buying fiber supplements and protein supplements. I want one product that does both jobs and this seems to be a great way.

If I can see it, then I can achieve it.

I add flaxseed to all my smoothies! I love it and they recommend that you get 1-2 Tbsp. per day (not more or less). Make sure it's ground though, or your body won't digest it!

Enjoy :)

FABDELKA - yes, aloe vera has a very strong flavor. It's something you have to get used to.

Most of us have been conditioned not to like the flavor of things unless it's sweet or salty or rich in fat. I've been drinking so many greens now that my taste has changed. I enjoy the flavors. Just start using small amounts at first and slowly add more as you get used to it. Combining with sweet fruits helps too.

I prefer fresh when possible and generally use 'Lily of the Dessert' when I buy it (there was one from Trader Joe's that I really like but I don't get it often because there isn't one close by and I can't remember its name).

Greenspirit what aloe vera juice do you use? I was told the same thing and did it and that makes the smoothie DISGUSTING as in unbearable as in borderline vomit. So I'm wondering how do you make it manageable? Thanks in advance.

Green smoothies have plenty of protein and most greens have calcium too. To boost Calcium add aloe vera (juice or leaves) or sesame seeds (tahini does just as well).

And chia seeds are fantastic for well... pretty much everything - especially protein as they are a "complete" protein.

And right now you can get Organic chia seeds for only $6.97 lb!

Fot the last few days I have been making smoothies. I use a little soy milk, andrew lessman's secure mix (vanilla this week),strawberries, mangoes or blueberries and 1 tbl of greek yogurt and 1tbl of flax seed. Tasty & healthy!

Thanks for that info, King!!

I did try a shake this morning--DH picked up some FF Vanilla yogurt for me yesterday. So, I had the yogurt, a scoop protein pdr, 1/2 a banana, and strawberries. It was better than yesterday LOL!! I think I prefer the yogurt, but then there's the sugar issue *sigh* I will have to look closer at nutrition labels when I'm at the store next time...I had to rely on DH and he was in a hurry to make it to a Tball game LOL It did taste good and filled me up for the morning :)

Thanks again for the info!!

I think your okay if someone is asking a question about something. I think you cross a line when you are promoting something unsolicited. Otherwise we wouldn't have teams like Turbo Jam, Clean Eating, Kettle Balls, etc. that in and of themselves are promoting products or life styles. Anyhow, I won't report you, lol.

Thanks for the info.

DIZCASPER, We are all on a budget in this ecconomy. Here are some things I do to save on produce.

*I buy some things at Costco because they are cheaper there than at the grocery store. For me that is Pineapple, bananas, and sometimes oranges.

*My dh will stop by fruit stands and find better prices on fruits than even Costco at times. He also finds ripe fruit is marked down before it goes bad to move it out. He will buy the ripe fruit and bring it home and I will cut it up and freeze it imediately. If my bananas start to ripen to fast I will peel and freeze them.

* I, of course, look for what is on sale and buy that at the grocery store. Again, if need be I will freeze some.

Fruits that freeze well include pineapple chunks, pit fruits, and peeled bananas. I don't freeze oranges or other citruses.

Now, You can order here, and I saw where it said no advertisements on the add a link page. So I am not sure if I can do this or not, without getting into trouble? I have seen lots of links like this on my various groups, so I am going to post it. It I am not supposed to, would someone kindly and 'nicely' please let me know?

Thanks!

I wrote about Chia seeds in by Google blog.

Chia seeds are one of the richest plant sources of omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs), particularly alpha-linolenic acid. These small seeds have the unique feature of a shell that turns gelatinous when they get wet. The seeds are highly nutritious, medicinal, and have been used for centuries for their beneficial properties. Dieters find chia seeds to be beneficial as well, their high fiber content making them quite filling. One of the best features of chia seeds are that they are pretty tasteless, and can be added to most dishes without upsetting the flavor. Thus all colors of chia seeds are equally nutritious if they are grown under the same conditions. As more chia seeds are eaten, there's less room for fattening foods. Chia seeds are mild tasting and versatile – you can add them to just about any food you like, and they will hardly change the taste of the food but will add lots to your nutrition. I have never heard of Chia seeds. Do you mean like the Chia plants with funny hairdos? That is interesting. Do you know the nutritional values on these.

Do some green smoothies. Add kale, spinach, or any other type of greens to the smoothie. More nutritious. Then add apple, banana or other sweet fruit to make it delicious. I also love adding chia seeds to my smoothies.

Welcome and you have some great questions. To answer your first questions we have all kinds of people here on the team. Some don't like to use protien powders. Our recipes may reflect that. For other recipes you may want to look at our Recipe bookl; www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_i
nd
ividual.asp
. You can also get to it by clicking on the picture on our team page. I haven't added to it lately but could start up at it again if the interest is there. It died out after a while. I am also happy to help out with any recipes you want. If you have a specific smoothie or juice you want to make let me know and I'll do what I can for you.

You can add a scoop of protien powder to any smoothie. I feel like it makes them powdery. I stopped using protiem powder and went to tofu or sometimes nuts for protien. So keep in mind that there are other protiens out there good for your smoothies and you may want to cycle through some until you find the one you like the best. Just experiment with the amount of protien powder but no more than a scoop.

I'll jump ahead to flax seed. It is a grain that is high in fiber & Omega 3 oils. It doesn't digest well unless ground though. It is almost undectable in your smoothies and adds so many health benefits to it. You can also add it to just about any other food. WARNING!~ when starting out to use it do so sparingly and then build up as your body can take it. I didn't get diareah but I did sit on the toilet a lot the day that I took it for the first time. It cleans your intestines out very well. I recommend it but also recommend you build up to it.

You are starting well with your smoothie recipes. The big in my opinion is to be creative. Here are a few rules of thumb I use when making my smoothies.

*Use half fresh fruit and half frozen. That way you don't water it down with ice cubes.

*Put your softest fruit closest to the blade so that when you get to the frozen fruit, which you put furthest from the blade, it helps to get it through.

* Use sweet fruits in all smoothies to sweeten the not so sweet or sour fruits. (example of sweet fruits, pineapple, orange, banana, mango & many more) I generally have orange and banana in all of my smoothies for sweetness.

* I try to make my smoothies well balanced. Fruit and sometimes veggies in all, plus, flax seed for the grain, protien-I like silken soft tofu, Milk- not everyone can have milk though.

*I fill my blender up with everything and add the milk (liquid) last. I pour it over the other ingredients until it is about 1/2 to 3/4 full of milk. Then I blend until I can't here the chunks trying to make it through the blade.

I'm happy to help you with any other questions you have.

...and yes, a smoothie fills you up nicely without a lot of cals but with a lot of nutrients. You will feel a nice shot of energy from it.

Yes, you can add the protein powder and the flax seeds to your smoothie. You can also add flax oil, if you have that, rather than the seeds. Your preference.

Welcome, I am new here, too.

Hello!! I'm new here, and am new to the smoothie world. I wanted to start trying some smoothies with protein powder to up my protein, and use milk and yogurts for help in my calcium. I have problems with these 2 on a daily basis. When looking through the recipes, most aren't using the protein powder. Can I add a scoop to any smoothie? How can I make them taste better? This morning I just used what I had and did 1c milk, 1 scoop protein pdr, strawberries and raspberries. Not a lot of flavor for me :( What can I do differently? Also, what is flax seed for (I remember reading about it, but forgot LOL). Can I also add it to any smoothie?

Thanks for the help!! My smoothie did fill me up this morning with under 300 cals (which is about what I try to keep my breakfast at).
