Wow! Lots of great information here! I never knew there were so many bike shops. Good to know!

Besides speeds (seven speed is the minimum), you need to consider what kinds of shocks & tires. Where you plan on biking at would give you info on that. Be aware, that can change. I have a "comfort" bike. It has thicker tires, seven speeds, but not Off-road shocks. I can do most surfaces but not an off road bike trail. Given the kind of places I have been able to travel to, I would never get a street bike with skinny tires.

You want to find a frame that is comfortable for you. Be aware that the price of the bike is not all the outlay you will have if this is your first bike. There is someway to transport-bike racks. Can get something from Walmart that will work. At some point, you will want to change. You should get lights for after dark or even just dusk. For me, a helmet, a bell & a mirror is a must. Helmets protect you. If you're riding one of the multiuse trails and are coming up on people walking, bells let them know you're there. Having a mirror to see behind me is a safety issue.

After that, there are the "would be nice" items. Bike racks and water bottle holders come under that category.

The Lakeland bike shop Slenderella61 mentioned is very good. If you're coming up South Florida from the Polk Parkway, it's on the right. There is a Swinn (?sp) sign. There is another shop before that on the left. They're nice but prices seem higher & they have less merchandise. Another good shop is in Winter Haven on Cyprus Garden Blvd. If you're coming from US17, they are on the left. They are in the same plaza as DQ.

If you get a bike and feel up to a 15-20 mile ride, I'm leading a bike ride for the Heartland Chapter of the Florida Trail Association this coming Saturday. If you're interested, email me at EileenV3@gmail.com.

Good luck & have fun on whatever you get.

I have a pedal-forward Drifter by Sun which is very easy on the knees. You can sit on the seat and touch the ground. I originally wanted a 4 speed because that is what I'd had before, but 7 speeds were more readily available. I had not trouble switching to 7 speed.

I paid about $500 about 5 years ago at Bike Barn near the corner of Memorial but on Florida Ave.

Mine was a great bike to start riding again after a 20+ year break. Now I wish I had a faster bike.

Okay have been needing a bike for my knee. I found two bikes I love, but I can not pick. The biggest difference is on is a 7-speed and the other is a normal bike. My mom said being in Polk County a 7-speed is better because of the hills. I am nervous about brakes. I flew over the handle bars of a 10-speed over 15yrs ago and well lets say 911 was called. Which is best for our county of rolling hills?
