Hi KOSHIE,

I lived in the foothills just west of Boulder and we had a bear that crossed our property on many days. I called the Dept of Wildlife for advice. And, it sounds like you have gotten some of the same advice that I did. Do not put out bird feeders of any kind. Trash also draws them to the property. You might try calling them for more advice.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU. I agree with your comment, you don't want it to become more comfortable. Do you know about bear spray? I have never used it. But, perhaps it would be helpful should the critter manage to break into your home??

I live on the side of the leading edge of the Front Range. Out the front windows we have a view of the plains. Out the back, the view is of a steep ascent of grass and firs. An unmaintained (and probably no longer on the map, but still legal right-of-way) actual hiking trail crosses the rear of our property.

I've had to hike halfway up the back "yard" THREE TIMES TODAY (so far) chasing off a juvenile bear. The first time today, I saw him on top of the 5-6 ft. tall stone wall that separates our patio from the rest of the "wild" property. That is 15 feet away from where I sit in the house at my computer! I wish I knew what was attracting it! No, I have no hummingbird feeders. I do have a compost heap that gets my kitchen waste -- but that kitchen waste sits for about 3 weeks putrifying in a small container on my kitchen counter before it gets thrown out. And what is on my patio is just potted plants.

It has run from my yelling and banging steel lid to pot each time, but I'm increasingly uncomfortable. As you probably know, this bear is displaying far too much comfort coming this close to my home, not to mention coming here THREE times today! I don't know what to do to discourage it more effectively. Any advice?

(I did NOT grow up with bears.)

UNfortunately, the time changed and the weather changed,so I did NOT get out to try any of the trails listed in the book. Maybe I will try again this spring?

Is there anyone else out there on the TEAM that can share your hiking trails with us?

Yes, please share what you learn with us!

I just got back from a family trip to Disney World. Next weekend is my final test for my Pilates Level 1 certification. I got word right before Thanksgiving that I will be hired as a full-time Pilates instructor at LifeTime Fitness (where I've been doing my certification).

LONG'S PEAK one of our 14ers!!!

ONE of the many DREAMS for my Bucket List of THINGS I WANT TO DO, WHAT ABOUT YOU???

I have heard the biggest challenge about hiking Long's Peak is getting up and down before a storm comes in. Lots of lightning.

Any interest in learning about Buffalo Bill? Golden will be hosting Buffalo Bill Days and parade end of month. With his museum and grave on Lookout Mountain the town celebrates Buffalo Bill!!

I've heard the Manitou Incline is quite a challenge. I haven't gotten up the courage to try it yet. Hopefully one day soon I'll do it. I LOVE hiking in Garden of the Gods, but it is rather touristy, so be prepared to run into people often. Red Rock Canyon is another great place to hike. My husband and I also really enjoyed a hike in Fox Run regional park. We hope to get out and explore some more hiking in the area. When we do one we really like, I'll let all of you on here know about it.

We have been doing short hikes lately in Rocky Mountain Park and nearby. Lily Lake is very pretty this time of year and good because I have to limit activity while my broken hand heals. (It gets very swollen if I do more than a couple hours of walking.) Last summer we did some hikes around Breckenridge too. I love the online interactive map of ALL of Colorado's trails that was launched last year. I refer to it often. http://cpw.state.co.us/cts

My 25 y/o nephew just hiked this "LOST CREEK LOOP" He hiked this trail last week beginning on Tuesday afternoon walking 15 miles the first day out, camping from dusk to dawn and then hiking another 15 miles on day 2, camping again and then on the third day hiked 8 miles until he reached the end. He said very few people and little wildlife.Beautiful scenery.

Although, I don't have personal experience with this trail, I think any information we can share with each other is beneficial. I also did a Google search on lost Creek Loop and found lots of good information and it appears there are some shorter trails available for those of us that may not have the time nor desire to be hiking for 3 days. emoticon

Any comments?? Anything would be great to help develop a good discussion group here. emoticon

This link provides segments of the trail suggested for first time travelers. Looks like a good place for us to start planning. Teams that could take on a Segment suggested here. Any thoughts?

I did not see anything about training, but I'd imagine training would be great if someone was planning to hike long portions (or all) of the trail.

Gee, it is great to see all the interest on the Colorado Trail. I would love to hike the entire trail some day. Did you happen to look at any of the training suggested before taking on the trail??

That is what gave me the idea to do it in small groups, where by we could break it up into what will hopefully be manageable hikes.Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. What do you think will be a doable hike?? We are heading into what could be a good weather season for hiking the trail??

I am getting excited. emoticon

Hi Team Colorado Mates,

My nephew just told me about the Colorado Trail. Has anyone taken on this bad boy? Sounds like a great hike and lots of beautiful scenery along the way. emoticon

www.coloradotrail.org/planning.html

This could be a pipe dream, but how much fun would it be to put together a Spark Team Party that would take on this Challenge and as a Team we could hike the tril groups of 2 - 4 of us taking on parts of the trail?

Anyone out there up for the Challenge?

Perhaps, I am a dreamer, but you got to have a dream, if your don't have a dream, HOW you gonna have a dream come true?

emoticon Not kidding. A funny thing about Colorado, Sun shinning in one corner and then rain or snow in another spot. My DH gets up very early, he was up at about 4;00am and said big flakes were coming down. I got up at about 6am , hoping to go for a walk, BUT we flakes were still coming down. Nothing stuck to the ground. But, it did stick to the roof tops.

Barr Lake sounds like a good road trip. I am hoping we will check it out this weekend. WE are taking our nephew out for his birthday on Saturday. So, it will need to be a Sunday trip. emoticon

Thanks for the suggestion.

Hey Colorado,
Woke this morning to a snow storm in Colorado. We are waiting for the sun to come out and play. Planning to take our day outside at 2:00pm. Getting excited for some real spring hiking soon. and, maybe some road trips before we know it. I love road trips.

Anyone have a fun suggestion for a road trip, from the Longmont area? Would love to hear any fun trips you have taken.?? emoticon emoticon

Hi, everyone!! I am new to this Team, as I recently moved here. I've been active on SP since August 2010. I'm an East Coaster who moved to sunny California (loved it!!). A couple years ago my older son moved to CO. I have three baby grandsons that are here, was flying back and forth every six weeks. Long story short, sold my house and moved here.
I see this Team is #20 on the Leaderboards. emoticon We gotta do something about that!! I am coming from a State Team where we ranked #1!!! LOL! I hope this Team does have some activity.
"See" you later!! emoticon

Wow, can't complain about the winter so far here in 2017. Temps along the front range have been very mild, yet the mountains got slammed with snow which is great. The low lands here along the front range are dry as a bone. Lots of fire warnings.

Celebrating 14 years here in Colorado and loving it!

Life has become richer since I resolved to embracing Winter and the beauty it hold.

The path was clear enough of ice today for a wonderful walk with a dear dog.

Now that the rain has stopped, I would love to do some day trips from Denver. Can anyone tell me their favorite trips or trails for beginner hiking? I will be mailing in my application for the Rocky Mountain Wanderers Volkssport Club this week.
Have a beautiful Sunday!

Have our members all survived the fire season thus far? Any property losses?

What are your July 4th celebration plans? Any creative replacement ideas for fireworks to share?

This year we are making the Mentos and diet soda pop fountains lol! In past years we have decorated the kids bikes with glow ropes and glow in the dark balloons...

Hi Fellow Colorado Folks!

I was part of this team a long time ago. I am getting back into Spark People as my weight has been on a roller coaster.

Hope that is ok that I am back.

Frustrated.

Hi there! Yes, I have traveled to Oahu and the big Island about 9 years ago. The big Island has the Volcano National Park, which I ended falling and injuring myself in a lava crack in the earth. A word of advice would be to wear jeans there, even if it is hot out. Cooled lava is like glass and cuts you up bad! I would recommend Oahu, simply because Maui is much more expensive with less going on. We went to a pig roast and luau with our hotel and watched surfers on the North Shore. Dole Pineapple has tours, which was fun, too. Have a great time!

Snowshoes enable you to almost walk on top of the snow...you (usually) don't sink at all.

It's a great workout. Use poles alternating in rhythm with your legs (right foot, left pole; left foot, right pole.) The poles propel you and you can burn, burn calories especially is you are headed up.

Try Grand County area (Winter Park, Granby, Grand Lake). Awesome trails & fewer people. Unbelievable scenery & friendly, down-to-earth locals. A great YMCA (Snow Mtn Ranch) with affordable rentals & long trails for X country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking! (no, I don't work there!)

Have any of you traveled to Hawaii? What are your favorite places and spaces there? Favorite touristy stuff, Favorite not-so-touristy stuff?

We are looking right now at visiting the Big Island, Kauai, and Oahu or Maui (just 3 total islands over approximately 10 to 12 days not including travel days...) end of May or early June!

The clamps dig into the snow, but not in a way that's hard to move. The snowshoes are pretty bulky, so you kinda do a stomping motion anyways. You have a lot of control, so it's pretty fun to go up and down hills!

That does sound like fun! Is it difficult to move your feet without digging into the snow, or is that the way it works?

Colorado winters aren't bad. We always complain about how windy it is more than anything else. It can be 10 inches of snow one day and a week later sunny and you are out and about without a coat.

I've always said that I would HATE to be a weatherman in Colorado! I have actually seen all 4 seasons in one day! Infact, I was in Monument about a week ago & it snowed dipping dots (I don't know what that is called, but they are the little hail balls), snowed, rained & was sunny...all with in 4 hours!
But, I still love it here more than anywhere else I can think of...the weather keeps life exciting! lol

The weather forecasters are hopeless around here!!! They said 30% of light snow showers on and off during the morning. Here it is 15:00hrs (3:00pm) It has been snowing since before daylight, it is STILL snowing and is likely to KEEP snowing until 17:00hrs (5:00pm) And I have already shoveled my driveway once today!!!!

I'm not to optimistic that we will get a lot of snow, we've gotten SO much wind! My mom always says that if we get a lot of wind, it blows the snow out! I trust that, since she has lived here for 70 years!(she also says that we get more snow for Easter, than Christmas! She's usually correct there!)

Freezing fog, ice pellets and frigid!!!

Stay safe out there.

I still laugh about a day in May, probably 24 years ago, when we literally had all 4 seasons in one day! I remember, because my oldest son was a baby & I rarely got out! My husband & I had plans to run errands & get things done, but the second we would try to leave it would start snowing, so my son & I would sit by the back window & wait for it to stop...it would stop, then start RAINING! Then, the sun would come out & it would warm up, but by the time we got ready to go...it would be snowing!!!! This went on ALL day! I don't remember if we ever got out or not... I just remember my ex getting really frustrated with me & my son! And my son & I getting REALLY frustrated with the weather! Now, I'd give all I have for that day back...just to sit & look out the window with my boy!
