That is what I was thinking about last night. I don't have so much trouble getting up if I have a hand to push myself up with, but I'm afraid of going down suddenly. If I do that suddenly and get hurt, then I won't be able to get up either. But I know I can do the squats and lunges even after my eye surgery next week, so I am going to start in on them. I think I can even do the wall pushups (can't do regular no matter what).

Thanks for all your ideas.

No, you have to get UP. That is going to be the difficult part, not getting down! So now that I'm thinking better, do squats, wall squats, and lunges. All of these exercises are described here on SP.
You need to strengthen your quads, AND your butt muscles to lift yourself up.

Would have to have a prop by where I end up. It is walking down the aisle (road) to the tomb, then falling to our knees when the angel says "Why seek ye the living among the dead?" I might not get one of those parts anyway, though. There were 6 people read for the 3 parts. Though I do think the three of us did a little better than the other three, just because we could be heard better. But I don't know all that much.

Today I was going up and down the stairs doing some laundry and carrying some upstairs. When I was doing the stairs I was lifting my knees really high. I don't know how much that will do, but I thought maybe something. I think it is going downstairs that would help more since I have to have the weight on while I bend my knees going down (if that makes any sense, which I don't think I do now).

I've got bad knees myself. Genuflecting at church is a real struggle. Now I have to grab the pew in order to get up. I'm afraid I don't know of any 'graceful" way to get up -- except to ask for help. Would it be acceptable within the context of the play to ask the person adjacent to you for a helping hand? Or is there a prop you can use (like... can you be on your knees right next to a chair or something?)?

That sounds fun. I can't get to zumba right now, but maybe I can do something at home.

Do you know of anything that will help an older lady get up and down from the floor easier? I am in a play in the crowd that drops to their knees, then has to get up rather gracefully, I hope. Well, the drop doesn't have to be graceful, just not hurt. And if I get the part I ended up reading for the other night I will have to do it twice. So I am trying to think of a way to get to where I can do that.

emoticon I'm blushing! But I thank you, Fancy!

You get better, Fancy, simply by not giving up! Here is a tip for YOU: get yourself one of those belly-dancer hip wraps -- the one with all the jingly "coins" sewn on.... They cost about $15. Now I know you'll feel silly at first, so just wear it one or two times at home first just to get mentally comfortable with it. Then get yourself to Zumba and pull out your hip wrap and tie it on.
Pretend to be cool and confident. When the music starts, have some fun and shake your hips a little bit "bigger" just to hear the coins jingle. Enjoy it and have fun with it! Bet you start a trend in your class! I wear mine to the Zumba class I attend and now about 5 other ladies are wearing theirs too and we all grin at each other and wave and shake our booties with abandon! I find it lots more fun to wear it while working out AND the urge to hear those coins jingle ends up giving me a better workout!

Your best encouragement is going to come from within, Fancy. IMO, dieting leads to weight loss and exercise leads to better health. And what SP says (and I agree!) is the BEST exercise is the one that you'll actually DO! So don't worry about doing an exercise better/harder. Mastery of FORM is the most important part -- not bigger/faster/harder movements! Encourage yourself by figuring out what motivates you to attend Zumba class as opposed to any other class and concentrate on the parts in the class that offer you satisfaction! Challenge yourself to improve (set your own standards to measure improvement) where it makes YOU feel good. A LOT of improvement in many areas will follow just by you figuring that out -- and of course following through!
For example, I challenge myself to keep my arms up longer and longer -- particularly my injured left arm. Not minding what the instructor is doing, I twirl my wrists and wiggle my arms HOPEfully gracefully and dance my heart out as best I can follow her with my feet. But my arms stay UP as long as possible! My goal is to strengthen as many muscles as I can to compensate for the injury.
Carol, who has breast cancer and is undergoing radiation and chemo-therapy, challenges herself just to walk the perimeter of the exercise area when she tires instead of merely going to the side and sitting. You can work from your limitations or you can work from your strengths.... just figure out how to measure it and then push yourself to do a little bit more. And it always helps to figure out how to make it fun.

Koshie, we need someone like you in SE Denver. I guess the one zumba instructor is encouraging like you, but she has too many in the class to see where there are ones who need more help. I need more encouragement but in a way that I can get better, but not in a way that just tells me I'm not doing something hard enough.

I was looking at all the ideas that you gave to Jet and they look pretty interesting. You sound like a great person.

Ah, oops! I am such a cheerleader! Sorry if I've come on too strong. I lead an aerobics class at my church; I guess I get accustomed to urging everyone to do their best. I'm "the baby" of the group at age 58. And yes, we have ladies older than you out on the floor, doing what they can do. On top of that Carol is battling breast cancer and radiation/chemotherapy -- I'm SO proud of her just for showing up for every class! She's not as energetic, but she's full of fight and vim and vinegar! Marge had two knee replacements and was slowly "losing it" until I started picking on her by name to push herself to do whatever she could do to her Maximum. The rest of the class was unhappy with me for picking on her until they witnessed Marge thanking me for caring enough to pay extra attention to her.
So, JET, I know you don't HAVE to be a couch potato. And I know it is HARD to begin. I also know that if you can get your heartrate up, you'll feel worn out and discouraged. But if you plow through that, you'll move better and feel better. And the best way I can think of to encourage you is to suggest that you do something active that is FUN. And ONE way to make something fun when you are limited is to challenge yourself to get better at something you KNOW you can do. Heck, my Mom is 79 and she challenges herself to get down on the floor and then get up. She started at ONE. Now she does it 15 times a day. And is pushing for 20. It's a simple thing, but it gives her strength, balance, and confidence. And pride in herself.
Go and grab yourself some!

Hi KOSHIE1; Wow! You have given me some good ideas for sure. I am such a couch potato, but I don't want to be one forever. At 74 yrs old, it does get old. So I will try some of the ideas you suggested and see how it goes. Thanks. emoticon

my mailbox is a mile away.... downhill. Which isn't bad until I turn around and have to walk back! And I can face that even... until I get to my driveway which is very steep -- and when I get to the top, I STILL have to climb up a full flight of stairs just to get to the front door!

Not very "user-friendly"!

I know you won't want to walk to the mailbox in the snow; but you certainly can do it when the ground is dry! And you are going to think I'm nuts, but have you considered TOYS? You know, balls, frisbees, a hula hoop... even a pogo stick!

A beach ball is small enough and light enough to use in a mobile home. Set it on the floor and do toe taps, alternating feet. Try to do them rapidly. OR just one foot at a time as fast as you can for 30 seconds. Pick up the ball and weave it through your legs in a figure-8 pattern. One way, then reverse. Work it up to your waist and around and around. Reverse. Hold it our in front of you with both hands, flat-palmed, and squeeze! Now do it overhead! And you can always bounce the ball -- just add a little knee bounce (tiny squats) while you do it. Or put the ball behind you and do a wall squat. or put the ball between your knees and do a wall squat. These are not the MOST fun things you can do, but to keep it interesting for yourself, challenge yourself to get better by keeping count: like "how many times can I..." or "how long before I drop it?" I couldn't even do a single bounce when I first got my pogo-stick; I was very proud of myself when I reached 100 bounces! Turns our 100 bounces is a lot of work! Fun work, but work just the same!

I really don't have a clue as to how physically capable you are; these things are just starters -- a way to get you up and moving. It's sorts like.... once you've got your shoes on and are out the door, well, it is easy after that to KEEP moving. Being active feels good physically and helps keep your body sound -- as you know. The trick is 3-fold: figuring out something fun to do or what you HAVE to do; and figuring out how to make it "count" as exercise; and getting started. Personally, if it's fun, it's a lot easier to get started!

And what's to keep you from cutting the rug? If you've a favorite tune. challenge yourself to choreograph it, meeting and challenging your own physical abilities! That's fun!

So are you moving yet? It only takes a commitment! A SMALL one to be sure to get started... 10 minutes. And it doesn't even have to be in one block; you can break it up! The point is only to make a commitment to yourself and START! Start doing SOMEthing good for yourself every day!

well... you could start by fidgeting! Really. Wiggle and tap. Drum your fingers. And when that gets boring, go put on some walking shoes. Take 'em off. Put 'em on again. That's called toe touches. Now go get the mail. Hey, it's a start! ...just... bring back a single piece of mail. Now go get another one. Just ONE! Repeat until mailbox is empty. That's called strolling, and it too is a start!
Now you're tired. So sit. Just sit in a nice firm chair and deal with one piece of mail. Now sit up straight and lift one knee. Lift it 15 times. Now lift the other one. 15 times. Deal with another piece of mail. Attempt to lift both knees together (at the same time). I say attempt 'cuz you might not be able to do it -- but that is okay -- just attempt it 15 TIMES. Deal with another piece of mail. Stand up. Sit down. Stand up. Walk to the potty. Sit. Stand. Walk back to your chair and sit and deal with another piece of mail. Stand up and sit down. Repeat 3 more times. When the mail is all done, check out exercises on SparkPeople!

I live in Boulder; I exercise in Arvada (Zumba and aerobics); and I'd love to have a buddy with whom to be physically active. I'd say "exercise", but I'm thinking about something more fun. Like hiking. Or snowshoeing. Or dancing. Or hooping. I'd play ball if I had better knees! I'm a 58 yo, formerly athletic (again -- my knees!) female, and I'm just not ready to be a couch potato! Well, I make exception for a game of Scrabble!
