Thanks for the info, but I think ABQ is a bit far for me at this time. Does sound like fun, though!

6.5 mile hike up Sandia Peak on Saturday, August 21st, if anyone else is interested!

Climb to Conqueror Cancer. It's ACS, so not specifically breast cancer, but all forms. The man and I are signed up to participate. Doesn't sound like it's too hard or a race, just something fun to do for a day while supporting a good cause.

Wish I had known....we just had a couple of 5K's here in Silver City last month. Phoenix and the surrounding areas have just tons of walks, runs, triathlons, etc. I did my first triathlon in Chandler...The Tri for the Cure in April. It was fantastic!

I'd love to do a short triathlon some day, but it's been about a decade since I've been on a bike - maybe I'll get one for Christmas this year, ha ha! I'm excited about doing the Komen 3-Day in Phoenix in November. My very first official event will probably be the 5K at the Whole Enchilada Fiesta in Las Cruces on September 25th. Please let me know if something else interesting is happening down south here before then!

Sounds like you have a lot going on LILPAT! I'm not anywhere close to a triathalon yet. I bought a bike last fall but didn't use it much because of the weather. It's been years. I'm planning on getting out on it more now but although I rode a bike a lot as a kid I am definitely a beginner again!! Good luck in all those events!

I am signing up for Ft. Bayard as well. I can GUARANTEE that I will NOT be running. I plan on doing the MILKMAN triathlon the first of June and the new sprint triathlon at ELEPHANT BUTTE in July....but first I will do the citizens race for the Tour of the Gila. I did the Tour of the Gila last year but the knees are still a little challenged this year.

I just recently started doing times events and I love doing them. I'm just starting to work at running but do participate even if I can only walk it. I did the 15 mile section of the Bataan Death March Memorial a month ago and it was awesome!!! I did the 10k in the Ellen Reavis Race for Autism in Albuquerque last weekend. My next event is a half marathon at Shiprock on May 1st. Even if I'm last I participate because it keeps me challenged and I love to see my times. I have never done this type of stuff before in my life and now at age 55 have just discovered feeling athletic. I was last at the autism event but that's okay because I finished. I got a first place medal because I was the only female in the 50-59 age group, which made me laugh. I was about halfway through the pack of finishers at Bataan. Looking at stats from the last 2 years Shiprock events I don't think I'll be last but will be probably somewhere in the bottom 3rd. But considering last July I could barely make it through Walmart I'm really proud of how far I've come. I would like to do at least one a month. And being in the southern part of the state, there are even fewer events. I have to travel to most of them. I am going to sign up for the Fort Bayard Run for the 5k this time, which I hope to be running most of because it's Memorial Day weekend. These types of things I've found work well for me to keep me challenged. I never in my life would have thought that I would be doing this!

I have found that a goal helps. My long term goal is to earn my 1 million meters rowed T-shirt. My short term is to row an average of 1500 meters per day. I am a little behind and need to catch up, as the 'season' ends on April 30. I don't compete well even w/ myself. Family members are good for some things, but not all.

As you can see by my age....swimming was not at the top of my list either. LOL (is now, I love it and it does not hurt my knees!)

I can relate. I am 47 and learned to swim this year. I had both knees rebuilt last year so running is walking, but I am a descent biker.

I don't do the walks/runs etc. I don't run and I don't really care for the crowds and the parking hassle associated w/ the more well known runs (e.g., the Zoo). However, the population of AZ is 6.5 million and the population of NM is 2 million. That may be why there aren't as many competitive races - fewer people spread out over a larger area!

I would love to take part in ABQ's event on the 25th but that is a Sunday and we observe the Sabbath--i.e., no shopping, no public-type activities. It's hard because so many things happen on Sundays now.

I will be doing the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on April 25th here in Albuquerque. Its a beautiful 5 mile walk. I have done it for the past 7 or 8 years.

I also plan on doing the Zoo run and another walk in May. That's just the beginning. And I usually do the Duke City Marathon 5k walk in October too. I love doing the walk - fun and usually for a good cause!

i agree...i'd like to do more activities, but our weather is not like AZ's...so I think we do pretty decent when the weather is nice. We have bike rides, the breast cancer walk, the run for the zoo, the duke city marathon, just ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I did the breast cancer walk last year and actually LOVED IT!! i hope to do it again this year!!

How many of you ever take part is things like a Breast Cancer walk, triathlon, duathlon benefiting cancer or some disease? I try to do one a month during the summer.
I get very frustrated with the state of New Mexico because they have so few competitions. I realize a lot of people are not competitive, but Arizona offers something every weekend.
