That was very interesting--Take heart NM, it could be worse! Considering all the rurual areas of NM it's pretty darn good. Colorado's numbers are great!

Thanks for the map! emoticon

I found the map from the CDC that I was looking for. Notice all of Central-North NM has really good numbers. I also just found out that Santa Fe, NM (my hometown) is one of the top 10 most active cities in America. It's not all bad news!!

Yes, I believe the poverty level has a lot to do with it. The stores I mentioned don't offer the "specialized" lower sodium, lower fat, and lower sugar varieties because they know their clientele can't afford that extra 10 or 15 cents per can for low sodium diced tomatoes. And lets face it, processed foods save a lot of time when you are working 2 jobs to make ends meet.

I think it's interesting that the two metrics you posted had to do with distance to a grocery store. In a lot of ways, NM breaks down into 2 groups - the rural part of the state and the urban core. Go out to Harding or McKinley or Cibola or Union County - people have a pretty long haul to drive into town.

I don't think stores offering low-cal processed foods is the solution. How much of the issue really is the poverty and socio-economic level of the state. For many people, a dollar value meal is within their budget and time constraints.

I agree that one study doesn't show the whole picture. I would be interested in that article, the last report I saw showed that NM had one of the highest obesity rates as well. Interesting....

I saw a map here on sparkpeople that shows New Mexico has one of the highest activity rates in America, specifically central and northern New Mexico. I wish I could remember where I saw it. It also gave diabetes risk and NM is really low. Just goes to show you one study doesn't always show the whole picture.

Somehow this just doesn't suprise me at all. There are more fast food resturants in a 5 city block area here in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho is no better. Lucky for me I have Smith's and Albertson's close to me where I can get fresh fruits etc. I feel bad for low income families that can't afford good healthy food and McD's and other fast food places is cheaper to feed a family of 4. There was a documentary a while back on PBS about New Mexico and how people are finding fast food places are cheap to feed a low income family. That is pretty sad. It makes me wonder if these places and the FDA are in each other's pocket somehow.

Oh wow. I have to say I am a little shocked. I have moved around a lot in my life (military family), and when I first moved here 3 years ago, I thought that everybody here was so active. You would actually see people outside ALL THE TIME. And the grocery stores are also way better than in some other states I have lived in. I guess, it all depends on what people choose to buy and eat though!

Definitely something we need to work on changing! We have so many negative statistics in this state that we rank high in, like alcoholism, drug abuse, kids living in poverty, low income, teen pregnancy etc. Wouldn't it be great to turn it around and be one of the top 10 most healthy states to live in?

No your not missing threads, Silver. I don't get "out" much these days between having no internet at home and taking 6 classes this semester. I just decided after being pretty much sedentary for the last four months, to get back into the swing a little. I still won't be on a lot, but I will try to appear at least once every couple of weeks. :)

I saw this too. I never eat diet stuff though so I guess I have not noticed that it is not available.
I try not to eat packaged.processed foods. I see them as poisons.Same with artificial sugars.

Hi Julie :) Nice to see you, have not seen you around for a while. Maybe I am missing threads

I have to say that I am not surprised. The stores we have here in Cruces, with the exception of Albertson's, Toucan's, and Walmart, offer very little in the way of diet anything. No diet sodas, sugar free versions of puddings or baked goods, and low fat or low sodium versions of foods. I think this is appalling and we should complain to the management of these stores.

This article came out today and we are in the Top 10 states for the "Deadliest" and "Worst" eating habits in the country!!! Let's all use this information and all of our great energy from Spark and help Pay it Forward and help turn this around! This is definitely NOT a Top 10 list we want to be on!

10. New Mexico

Grocery Stores Per 1,000 Residents: 0.26 (23rd)
Amount Spent on Fast Food Per Capita: $737 (8th most)
Gallons of Soft Drinks Purchased Per Capita: 58 (12th least)
Pounds of Sweet Snacks Purchased Per Capita: 111 (13th least)

New Mexico's worst rankings occur in two metrics. It has the 44th-greatest percentage of households without a car that are more than 10 miles from a supermarket or grocery store and the 44th-greatest percentage of population that has low income and is more than 10 miles from a supermarket or grocery store, according to the United States Department of Ag1riculture. These metrics are significant because they suggest a lack of access to affordable and nutritious food. Residents may rely on fast food restaurants and convenience stores instead. New Mexico has the eighth-greatest amount of money spent on fast food per capita among all the states considered.
