Working out a train trip Jefferson City, MO to Vancouver, BC. A belated 25th anniversary trip. We were very cash-strapped 3 years ago, and it's going to be really special. First train trip ever for Paul. The credit card charges are being paid as we go. So passports and tix this month, any clothes or other pre-trip expenses just before we go, and the hotel/meals in October.

I want to go on a backpacking trip. Havasu Falls, Bright Angel, something in the Grand Canyon. September 2020.
And that means gear. I'm budgeting for new boots to use and break in well this year, and my sleeping bag is a joke.
I'm taking on a couple more clients, and I'm dedicating that income to the trek.

As I. lose weight I am more able to do more for myself . . . which means less money spent for help. Giving up most processed foods helps lower grocery bill. I use spinach in or with many dishes but have yet to compare price of fresh vs canned or frozen. My favorite breakfast is a poached egg in butter over spinach (I do the paleo plan).

I spend money on kindle books. I collect them faster than I can read them sometimes. I shop mostly on Amazon because Walmart is 1.5 hours away and I have no wheels to get there.

NASFKAB,
Iím agreeing with your posts.
Homemade snacks (well, Iím trying not to snack at all) versus store-bought, combine trips when driving, selecting the better place for charity.

When a friend keeps asking for $ and finding it hard to say "no"--but also knowing they don't know how to spend their $ wisely. A $20 here and there adds up-and especially when it's a few times a week sometimes. Have done the "say no" alot of times-but it just keeps happening.

Momma48,
Bananas are for nice cream.
I discovered a stash of instant curried lentil soup, so it went to one office. I get tea for free there, so tea and soup will be perfect.
Iím taking hummus and peppers into the other office tomorrow for dinner.

Grapes are good for errands.

We enjoy snacking on frozen grapes or banana slices. Put a certain amount in a sandwich-size ziplock bag, pop the bags in the freezer and they're ready to grab when we are hungry for something a bit sweet. Can also use them when making smoothies---they work really well.

I find keeping some snacks in the freezer & serving that after heating costs much less. Its so much healthier too.

Rereading your comment you were probably referring to how you buy things you might be better off without?

Heck yeah - I cannot possibly maintain my weight without eating all the junk food I eat starting with breakfast lol that's sarcasm of course because like most junk food junkies I should give it up for a multitude of reasons. Good luck and bless us when we try to do better.

I think there is a relationship between my spending excesses & my eating excesses. My spending problems are similar to eating junk food.

I struggle going anywhere with the hubby or the granddaughter. They are much more of free spenders than I am.

God grant me the serenity to change the things I can, to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Where do you struggle with expenses?

For me, itís fuel for my work commute, and a habit of fast food on long workdays.
Iím being mindful of how I drive, allowing extra time to go a bit more slowly, and packing food.

And following the gas prices. I work in an area where gas is less expensive than by my home, so I try to hold out and get gas there. I also donít let my tank dip much less than half.
My ex had a mantra: gas in the tank is money in the bank.
Not quite, but he was right in keeping tanks full meant smaller hits for gas, and since money isnít consistent when you work for yourself, it helps to have smaller if more frequent expenses.

My goal for this year is to stop the leaking expenses.
