Thanks! I'll have to give it some more thought, I guess. I'll mainly need the greenhouse in the early spring and late fall, so thought the east/west oriented would be better so the south facing roof and wall could capture the winter sun (I'm in WA state), but the neighbor has some big, really big!, Doug Fir trees in her yard which shade part of my yard in the winter anyway. A door on the west side is the best for me for access and aesthetics, so that works great, and you're right about the winter storms, the door should be tight enough if I build it right. If I put the greenhouse oriented north/south, the door would have to go on the north or south side, it's a kit that I've got my eye on, so the door has to go on either end and neither north or south are aesthetic or well accessible, so I was looking at a smaller or more square greenhouse if I needed to go north/south......sigh.....I'll keep working on it, I've got until January/February to decide! Thanks again!

The long sides of a greenhouse should be oriented north and south, which will usually mean that the door will be on either the east or west side. Its best to set the door on the side that gives you the best access for what you will be doing. Make it handy for you. Moving soil and plants in and out can be heavy work so don't make it any harder on yourself than you have to. The door should be fitted well enough that the direction in the winter should not make a big difference in heating.
Venting on the greenhouse should help prevent over heating, the vents that open automatically are really great.
A friend of mine grows hops on the south side of her greenhouse during the summer which shades it and helps keep it cooler. She then sells the hops to beer brewers in the fall.

I am planning for my greenhouse next year and have staked out the area, but I am wondering which direction the door should face, north or south, or opposite the direction that storms flow? I think for the best operation I should put the door on the north wall so I can open it to cooler air in the summer, but that would put it facing the back fence, whereas for aesthetics it would look best on the west side, but the west wall faces the incoming winter weather where I live!

Just curious to know anyone's thoughts or which direction their greenhouse doors face. Thanks!
